Dating And Meet-up ZoneUgly Prostitute Reported To Police by jagabanban(op): 1:40pm On Jun 14, 2013
A man has been warned after he dialled 999 to complain about a prostitute's looks after meeting her.

West Midlands Police said they were contacted by the caller who said he "wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act".

The force said the call was received at about 19:30 BST on Tuesday complaining that the woman was not as attractive as she had claimed.

Officers have now sent the man a letter warning him about wasting police time.

West Midlands Police said the man had claimed he met the woman in a hotel car park.

"The caller claimed that the woman had made out she was better looking than she actually was and he wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act," a spokesperson for the force said.

"When he raised this issue with the woman concerned, she allegedly took his car keys, ran away from the car and threw them back at him, prompting him to call police."
'It was unbelievable'

During the call, the man can be heard to say: "I've arranged a meeting with her, but beforehand I've asked her for an honest description, otherwise when I get there I'm not going to use her services.

"Basically she has misdescribed herself, misrepresented herself totally.

"She was angry because she obviously thinks I owe her a living or something."

Sgt Jerome Moran, based at Solihull police station, called the man back to offer some advice.

He said: "It was unbelievable - he genuinely believed he had done nothing wrong and that the woman should have been investigated by police for misrepresentation.

"I told him that she'd not committed any offences and that it was his actions, in soliciting for sex, that were in fact illegal."

Despite the man refusing to give his details, police were able to identify him and have sent him a letter warning him about his actions.

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 gives consumers legal rights, stipulating goods which are sold must be of satisfactory quality, be fit for purpose and must match the seller's description.

ComputersPassword In A Pill And Electronic Tattoo by jagabanban(op): 9:04pm On May 31, 2013
Always forgetting your password? Tech company Motorola is working on some rather unusual solutions!

They've unveiled an electronic 'tattoo' that sticks to your skin. It has a circuit so gadgets can identify you.

Another experimental idea is a password pill you swallow - that transmits a signal to devices outside the body.

The pill doesn't need batteries because it's powered by stomach acid - but Motorola bosses say it won't be on sale any time soon.

So you'll have to keep remembering those passwords for now!

CultureHow Was Your Night? Why Do You Want To Know? by jagabanban(op): 5:32pm On May 14, 2013
I have been trying to place my hands on how some form of greetings came about.

One of such is "How was your night? To me, its like an invasion of my privacy. Why do you want to know how my night was? When people ask me how my night was, I just reply okay because you certainly do not expect me to go into any details

If I was being intimate with my wife, would I tell you? If I was having a sweet dream or nightmare, would I tell you as well?

I think this form of greeting has no meaning. Just my opinion anyway, others' views are welcomed.

Whoever tells you any PFA is the best should also state the index or indices they are using.

If its based on Number of registered clients and total funds under management (FUM), then Stanbic is the leader.

However, there are other salient points that you need to consider. The topmost being that this is a Retirement Savings Account. You would not have access to the funds in this account until you are 50 (if working in private sector) or 60/ 35 years of service (if working in Public sector).

You need to speak to current Retirees in any of these PFAs and inquire about their experience including customer service, promptness of payment of pension etc.

To me, this is what really counts.
Christianity EtcMan Writes All 788,000 Words Of The King James Bible By Hand by jagabanban(op): 6:28pm On May 13, 2013
For four centuries English-speaking people have learned about Christianity by reading the King James Bible.

The English translation introduced phrases still well-used today such as 'no peace for the wicked' (Isaiah 57:21), 'the blind leading the blind' (Matthew 15:13) and 'God forbid' (Romans 13:1).

One retiree from New York state in the US has spent four years writing the entire Bible - all 788,000 words - out by hand on 2,400 pages of watercolour paper.

Phillip Patterson, 63, finished the final verses this weekend before reading from his finished manuscript at his church in the village of Philmont.

Mr Patterson explained to the BBC's Matt Danzico why he undertook the monkish pursuit, despite saying he does not consider himself particularly religious.

HealthClench Your Fist To Get A Grip On Memory by jagabanban(op): 6:16pm On May 13, 2013
To most, a clenched fist indicates anger. But a new study suggests that clenching your fist can help form memories and recall them later.

Research conducted by Ruth Propper and colleagues from Montclair State University focused on four groups of people who were asked to first memorize a list of 72 words and then later recall it.

People in one group clenched a right fist for about 90 seconds before memorizing the list and then did the same when asked to remember the words. People in a second group clenched a left hand before memorizing and recollecting.

Two other groups clenched one hand prior to memorizing (either the left or right hand) and then opposite hand prior to recollecting. A control group did not clench a fist at all.

The group that clenched their right fist when memorizing the list and then clenched the left when recollecting did the best.

“The findings suggest that some simple body movements — by temporarily changing the way the brain functions — can improve memory,” Propper said in a press release.

So the next time you see someone clenching his fist, he might not be picking a fight with you, but trying to remember who you are.

The study was published in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

SportsWayne Rooney Asks To Leave Manchester United Again by jagabanban(op): 7:57am On May 09, 2013
By Ben Smith BBC Sport

Manchester United insist Wayne Rooney is not for sale after it emerged the striker asked to leave Old Trafford for the second time in three years.

The 27-year-old ex-Everton forward told United boss Sir Alex Ferguson two weeks ago he felt the time was right to move after nine years at the club.

A spokesman for United would only say: "Wayne Rooney is not for sale."

The news emerged on the day Ferguson announced he would be retiring as manager at the end of the season.

And Rooney is set to be re-united with his former Everton manager David Moyes, who could be announced as Ferguson's successor on Thursday.

Then aged 18, Rooney left Moyes and his hometown club Everton in August 2004 in a £27m deal. He has since scored 197 goals in 402 appearances for United, winning five league titles, two League Cups and a Champions League.

This season the England striker has scored 16 in 37 appearances, with 12 of those goals coming in the league as United won their 20th title.

However there has been speculation in the second half of the season that Rooney may leave, especially after he was dropped to the bench in favour of Danny Welbeck for the Champions League second-round tie against Real Madrid.

Days later Ferguson promised Rooney would stay at the club, saying: "He'll be here next year. You can have my word on that." Ferguson later said Rooney would be given a new deal.

But speculation has persisted and now it has emerged that the forward has asked to leave the club for a second time.

The first occasion came in October 2010 when Rooney pulled out of contract talks after saying he had not received "any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad".

Ferguson said at the time he was "dumbfounded" by Rooney's desire to leave, but 48 hours later he signed a new five-year deal. Manchester United went on to win the title that season, and Rooney later said staying at the club was the best decision of his career.

Moyes and Rooney have had their own differences. In 2008, Moyes accepted substantial libel damages over claims made in Rooney's book about their relationship at Everton.

Since then, however, the pair have been reconciled. In September 2012, Rooney wrote on Twitter: "Everton are playing brilliantly. David Moyes has done some job over the last 10 years."

On this occasion Rooney has not submitted a formal transfer request, but it is understood he asked verbally to leave.

Sports10 Things Not Everybody Knows About Sir Alex Ferguson by jagabanban(op): 7:25am On May 09, 2013
By Tom de Castella BBC News Magazine

1. Once ran a pub. Ferguson has worked outside football, starting out as an apprentice toolmaker and shop steward in Glasgow and much later running a pub that he renamed Fergie's with a downstairs bar named the Elbow Room in memory of his physical style as a player.

2. Intrigued by JFK. Gordon Brown sent him numerous CDs about the assassination of JFK. Ferguson bonded with Brown over a shared interest in US politics. "Gordon sent me 35 CDs on it, which was brilliant of him," he told Manchester radio station Key 103 in 2007. Ferguson is fascinated with JFK. He said he kept JFK's autopsy report by his bed. He also has a copy of the Warren Report signed by [the former US president] Gerald Ford.

3. Gave the young Kenny Dalglish lifts. When Ferguson was at Rangers he gave lifts to a young Kenny Dalglish who was hoping to be signed. "Fergie used to give us a lift into town. He had such a big car," Dalglish told the Guardian. When Dalglish was picked up by city rivals Celtic he was forced to play centre back and mark Ferguson in a reserve team game.

4. Told Alastair Campbell to get a masseur for Tony Blair. Ferguson was a big Labour donor and advised Tony Blair on leadership. The idea of getting a masseur for the election "battle bus" may have been a step too far, he later admitted. Better advice was when he said: "So long as you can keep all your key people in the same room at the same time, you'll be fine."

5. Not the longest serving manager. Ferguson was manager of Manchester United for 26-and-a-half years. The longest serving league manager in Europe was Guy Roux, who occupied the hotseat at French team Auxerre for 44 years, finally stepping down in 2005. Ferguson isn't even the longest serving Scottish manager. Willie Maley was Celtic manager from 1897-1940, clocking up 43 years.

6. Used to jump over walls as a boy. He grew up in a poor area of Glasgow where there wasn't much to do apart from play football, fight and jump over walls, known as dykes. "The dangerous ones had names - the king, the queen, the suicide, the diamond, the spiky," Ferguson once said. "You'd go to different areas of Govan to challenge each other into jumping dykes because it was very dangerous. But you do that when you're a kid because you've got no fear."

7. "Fergie time" is 79 seconds. "Fergie time" is the widely held belief by supporters of other team, that if Man Utd are losing after 90 minutes, the referee will extend injury time long enough for them to equalise or win. Last year, the BBC analysed Fergie time. It found that Man Utd were not unique in being given extra injury time when they were losing, although it appeared they got more than other teams. Games went on 79 seconds longer when Manchester United were losing than winning. Man Utd's towering achievement - securing the treble with victory in the 1999 European Champions League - was achieved in Fergie time, when they reversed a Bayern Munich lead, by scoring two goals after the 90th minute.

8. Alex or Alec? Many people in football refer to him as Sir Alec, assuming that his Scottish background will mean his name is pronounced in that way. But Scotland is strangely split on the Alex/Alec question, with people slipping between the two, often without noticing. BBC Sportsound presenter Richard Gordon said he had found himself using both forms. He said that former Ferguson colleague Willie Miller often calls him Alec when talking on the radio and ex-Scotland manager Craig Brown is prone to using the informal Alec, quickly followed by the more respectable Sir Alex. Carole Hough, professor of onomastics, says she can think of no particular reason why people would choose one or the other, except that Alec is slightly shorter. She said both names were popular in Scotland and England, with Alec perhaps having more currency north of the border.

9. The "hairdryer treatment" and "squeaky bum time". Ferguson was responsible for two memorable coinages. Players speak in awestruck tones of what it is like to be on the receiving end of Sir Alex's temper. The "hairdryer" - for its sound and heat - became the chosen phrase. Players talk of the moment a switch is flicked in Fergie's head, he presses his face close to the you and emits a terrifying torrent of abuse. Former United winger Lee Sharpe - famed for his extracurricular activities - has been credited with inventing the term. David Beckham said: "The fear of getting the hairdryer was the reason why we all played so well. He was a manager you wanted to do well for." Ferguson also put his finger on the agony of watching a tense sporting moment. It is thought he first used "squeaky bum time" in March 2003 as his Manchester United team clawed back the lead from rivals Arsenal in a tense finale. It has become part of the football argot, especially at the climax of a season. It first entered the Collins English dictionary in 2005 with the definition "the tense final stages of a league competition, especially from the point of view of the leaders". Wikipedia notes the act of "squirming or moving forward and back in one's seat while watching an exciting sporting event".

10. Home is called Fairfields. Ferguson lives in a mansion in Wilmslow, Cheshire. It is called Fairfields after the shipyard where his father worked.

EducationThe World's Most Sleep-starved Students by jagabanban(op): 11:01am On May 08, 2013
Sleep deprivation is a significant hidden factor in lowering the achievement of school pupils, according to researchers carrying out international education tests.

It is a particular problem in more affluent countries, with sleep experts linking it to the use of mobile phones and computers in bedrooms late at night.

Sleep deprivation is such a serious disruption that lessons have to be pitched at a lower level to accommodate sleep-starved learners, the study found.

The international comparison, carried out by Boston College, found the United States to have the highest number of sleep-deprived students, with 73% of 9 and 10-year-olds and 80% of 13 and 14-year-olds identified by their teachers as being adversely affected.

Check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22209818 for more details on the study.

In literacy tests there were 76% of 9 and 10-year-olds lacking sleep.

This was much higher than the international average of 47% of primary pupils needing more sleep and 57% among the secondary age group.

PhonesUS Military Approves Android Phones For Soldiers by jagabanban(op): 7:51am On May 07, 2013
Samsung phones running a secure version of Android have been approved for use by the US Department of Defense.

The approval is the start of a process that will see many different types of mobile devices used by US soldiers.

Approval for other Android devices as well as Apple phones and tablets is expected in late May.

Before now, ailing phone maker Blackberry was the only firm whose products were approved for use by US service personnel.

Fast growth

The approval of Samsung phones was the first step of a strategy that would let soldiers use many different types of devices, both smartphones and tablets, during their tours of duty, said DoD spokesman Lt Col Damien Pickart.

The approval would not necessarily result in orders for gadgets, he said, but meant different groups within the DoD could now buy the devices most appropriate to their needs.

The US DoD has about 600,000 smartphone users, said Col Pickart, about 470,000 of whom were using Blackberry handsets. The remainder was split between people using both Google Android and Apple phones in a series of trials to assess whether the devices could be used securely.

According to one report on Federal News Radio, the approval of other handset makers is part of a US DoD plan to more than double the number of secure mobile devices used by its armed forces by 2014. Alongside this will be built a secure system to manage all these devices and their associated app stores. Commercial bids to provide this are currently being assessed.

Blackberry handsets dominate within the US military because, before now, it was the only make to meet the Department's stringent security demands.

Samsung phones were among the first to win approval because of work done on a hardened version of the Android operating system called Knox that also met those security requirements. Gadgets that run Apple's iOS 6 operating system as well as other Android phones are currently undergoing testing by the Defense Information Systems Agency and are expected to be approved by the end of the month.

At the same time Samsung won approval, Blackberry 10 smartphones and Playbook tablets were also ruled safe to use on military networks.

CelebritiesLauryn Hill Jailed For Tax Evasion by jagabanban(op): 7:44am On May 07, 2013
Singer Lauryn Hill has been sentenced in the US state of New Jersey to three months in jail for tax evasion.

The Grammy-winning singer, 37, also faces three months of home confinement, after pleading guilty last year.

Hill failed to pay taxes on about $1.8m (£1.2m) of earnings between 2005-07.

In a statement to the judge, Hill said she had intended to pay the taxes but could not after withdrawing from public life and ending her music career to raise her children.

Hill has six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of Bob Marley.

"I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them," Hill said in court. "I had an economic system imposed on me."

Hill started her career with Grammy-award winning hip-hop group Fugees alongside Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel.

She released her acclaimed solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, in 1998. It won five Grammy awards and sold more than 19 million copies worldwide.
