While this may be "no news" according to some posters, it may also mark the beginning of good things for the force.

Our people have a saying that the day a mad man realizes that he is mad, is the day his healing starts.

Once you know and admit your problem, you are on your way to finding a solution.

HealthIs It Bad To Eat Standing Up? by jagabanban(op): 8:31am On May 02, 2013
Does eating standing up give you indigestion?

It seems there’s less and less time to enjoy lunch nowadays. There’s no such thing as the phrase “lunch hour”, even in France, where the traditional three-course meal is being replaced with sandwiches and fast food. If you are in a rush and you grab something quick, there’s a tendency to think that you must at least sit down to eat it, even if that means sitting on the bus while you go to your next appointment. Otherwise surely you’ll get indigestion.

But is this true? When you look at the causes of indigestion or functional dyspepsia, as it’s called in the medical literature, eating standing up doesn’t feature on the list. When likely causes such as stomach ulcers and gastritis have been ruled out, the management of dyspepsia can include changes to lifestyle, but this means eating a healthy diet, giving up smoking and reducing alcohol and coffee consumption. It doesn’t mean sitting down when you eat.

In fact doctors even recommend the opposite, if the pain is caused by acid reflux, when acid from the stomach comes back up into the oesophagus. This is where gravity can help; remaining upright during and after eating can keep the acid down in the stomach where it belongs. For the same reason, patients with reflux are advised to tip the head of their bed up, so that they sleep on a slant.

But there could be another problem with standing up to eat. When we’re standing up we do things faster, hence the brief craze amongst “trendy” companies for installing bar-height tables for standing meetings after a study found that sitting meetings lasted 34% longer. So perhaps the risk of standing to eat is the temptation to gobble your food down - the speed of eating leading to indigestion, rather than the position.

There are very few studies comparing fast and slow eaters, partly because it wouldn’t be easy to randomise people into eating at a particular speed and then to enforce that at every meal. A study from 1994 did include questions about eating speed in a survey of dietary habits. They found the speed at which you believed you ate had no relationship with the frequency of indigestion. Research conducted in 2010 found the same, but these two studies rely on our ability both to judge our eating speed accurately, and to report it honestly.

This problem was overcome in a South Korean study, which timed how long a group of cadets training at the Armed Forces Nursing Academy actually took to finish their meals. With their regimented life where they all woke, ate and exercised at the same time, they were the ideal group of people to study. The one difference in their daily routines was the speed at which they chose to eat. But yet again, if you examine the study in detail, speed of eating seemed to have little effect on indigestion.

So how about the real masters of fast eating, the competitive speed-eaters? An American known as Furious Pete eats quickly for a living and holds four Guinness World Records, the most recent of which involved devouring a twelve inch pizza in 41.31 seconds. Another record holder, this time from Japan, Takeru Kobayashi, can eat fifty-eight Bratwurst sausages in ten minutes. Surely that’s fast enough to give anyone indigestion, but apparently not. Professor Marc Levine, a radiologist at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania x-rayed the stomach of a speed-eating champion after eating 36 hot dogs in ten minutes. The participant was happy to continue after eating 36, but the decision was made to terminate the study for his own safety. He didn’t have indigestion, while the unlucky man who’d volunteered to act as a control, felt sick after seven hot dogs and had to stop. The x-ray showed that the speed-eater had trained his stomach to expand to such an extent that he no longer felt full when he’d eaten.

And this brings us to what could be the problem with eating fast – it’s not indigestion, but the disruption of the usual mechanism that makes you feel full. But even here the evidence is inconsistent. Some studies found that eating fast leaves you feeling hungrier, causing you to eat more. Other studies have shown the opposite.

So next time you don’t have time to sit down for lunch, then don’t feel too bad if you think you are wolfing down your meal too fast. As long as it doesn’t make you feel ill at the time, there doesn’t seem to be any harm in it.

Nairaland General'raining Money': If Na You, You Go Return Am? by jagabanban(op): 9:22pm On Apr 25, 2013
Police are urging people from a small town in Belgium to return tens of thousands of euros in cash that were thrown out of a speeding car by thieves attempting to make a getaway.

The incident occurred in the Flemish town of Zedelgem after the thieves stole a safe from a nearby house.

The thieves threw the safe out the car to distract police officers. It broke open and passers-by grabbed 50-, 100- and 200-euro notes that were scattered.

The thieves are still on the run.

One man said he had picked up two rolls of 5,000 euros each only to have a police officer grab it back, reports the BBC's Matthew Price.

Another said it was as if it was "raining money".

The local prosecutor says it was "self service" as passers-by filled their pockets with the scattered cash.

While some have returned the money, a considerable sum is yet to be recovered.

Anyone keeping the cash could face up to two years in jail, officials say.

So, who are these ladies? Anyone know?

I totally agree with you that "every writer has his or her own distinctive character and way of presenting himself." However, that should not be a reason to tell every critic of a writing to "Write ur own". Just as we all can be doctors or lawyers or engineers, so also, we all can be writers. Don't forget the writer is not writing for himself but for others to read, be entertained, learn a few lessons and also critic.

What I wrote, earlier, about the writing was my take on how I felt before, during and after reading it. The intention was not to hurt or demoralize the writer but to express my opinion of the work. I apologize if it's caused any heartache for the writer. I also did not expect the response he gave. His response took me aback and made me wonder if he appreciates the concept of feedback. Feedback would either be negative, positive or both. The essence is for you to take the feedback and apply it by improving on the work. For me, I was put off after reading the first few lines hence my feedback.

Iya Olori (Seller of Shea butter), as she was fondly called by everyone, was the tallest woman I knew as a four year old. She was like a giant amongst other women including some of the men residing the family house. She was tall, slim and had tribal marks. Of all the grandmothers residing in the family house, Iya Olori was the prettiest. The other women in the family house were either short and fat or short and thin. She had a distinct figure. She was simply unique amongst them. This probably explains why the men of the house almost fought to marry her when her first husband died.

In addition to her beauty, Iya Olori was also business-minded. She was a popular merchant in the area, trading in Shea butter. Shea butter is a slightly yellowish fat extracted from the nut of the shea tree. These days, it is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer, salve or lotion. In those days, in addition to the cosmetics use, shea butter was used in food preparation. Several times, I witnessed Iya Olori adding shea butter to her meal. I never liked the taste of shea butter in foods. She stopped adding it to my meal the day she saw me puking after a meal, in which she had added shea butter. She did not make the shea butter herself but knows people who do. She acts mostly as the middleman (or should I say middle-woman) between the producers and the suppliers who come from Lagos, Ibadan and Akure to procure the good.

I cannot recall how and when I started living with her but I was told she took over my nurturing from when I was two and half years old. Although I called her my grandmother, she was actually my grand aunt. I did not know this fact until much later. Iya Olori did not have any child of her own. She was not barren. The sad truth is that all the children she had died at infanthood. In order to relieve her loneliness, my actual grandmother placed my mother under her care to assist her. Although, this did not remove the reproach of childlessness completely, it helped alleviate some of the burden in her heart.

Good day literary enthusiast. This serial is a documentation of my life (childhood and early adulthood). Its a presentation of events that have happened to me, and have transformed me. This writing has not employed sensationalism in the very least. Please critic my writing. Its a passion that I'm just beginning to exploit.

“What is life that you are mindful of it…?” These words have, unconsciously, been my watchword in life. The first time I saw these words was on an ajegboro (specially fabricated vehicle for transporting goods, mostly farm produce, from the rural to the urban areas in the south-western part of Nigeria) while on my way to see a paternal uncle who had a message for me from my father.

The words meant very little to me then. However, over the years, it has turned out to be my mantra when faced with difficult situations or challenges that seem insurmountable. I just step back, look around, take a deep breadth and then ask myself, “What is life that you are mindful of it…?”

My childhood and upbringing was neither spectacular nor extra-ordinary in every sense of the words. But, I had my share of childhood memories – experiences that I would forever cherish, and some of these have contributed in making me the man that I am today.

The memories I am recounting in this writing happened mostly during my formative years. A few before I started primary school, some in my primary and secondary school days and others as a student in the higher institution, the prestigious Oba Awon University (OAU). Suffice to say that I would particularly cherish the memories pre and post primary school as these were spent with my maternal grandmother (or so I thought).
