Politics / Fuel Subsidy Removal: Does It Makes Sence More In 2016 Than 2012? by jakiedudu(m): 11:43am On May 13, 2016
I observed that supporters of APC govt always give this flimsy excuse that GEJ govt could not be trusted with subsidy removal to justify their non-support for GEJ's govt on removal of subsidy in 2012. That he could not be trusted. Is that a good excuse Does it make economic sence to support corruption because you feel GEJ govt is corrupt Certainly not. Phrases like, ''his govt was corrupt'', ''he could not be trusted'' has become a favorite defence mechanism for APC supporters on why they protest subsidy removal in 2012. Oby Ezekwesily even made a lowly remark that ''She was glad she and her house hold didn't gave free money to govt in the name of subsidy removal in 2012''. Her own justification as to why she didn't support subsidy removal in 2012. What makes the above even more baffling is that Oby, as a former world bank executive should known better the economic benefits of subsidy removal, yet allowed her sence of judgement to be clouded by personal politics. For someone with basic economic knowledge who worked with a reputable organization like the world bank, one would expect that she should have known better that fuel subsidy was an economic parasite that should have been removed since 2012. But out of whatever beef had with GEJ's govt, she allowed sentiments to cloud her jugements.
It is share hypocrisy that individuals who always berate GEJ govt over fuel subsidy corruption supported subsidy in 2012. Fuel subsidy had actually been the catalyst that fuel sharp corrupt practices in the oil sector since the 1970s. It is difficult and almost impossible to root it out, considering the complexities and nature as number one money spenner for the country. That has been was the situation. Same thing facing the country today. So why support corruption (fuel subsidy) only to support it now because it is not GEJ govt It doesn't makes sence!

For starters, conditions for subsidy removal were actually RIPE in 2012. Then oil price was over $100 per barel, there was no shortage of foreign exchange, inflation was at a single digit, and currency exchange was about N160-175 to the dollar. At that time the worsed price senario for pms in post subsidy removal was around N160 per litre. It was quite high then, but given a chance, fuel prices would have since dropped owing to competition.
The benefits then were huge. Private sector players would have build refineries, because it would be much more cheaper to refine products locally than import. More strategic fuel depots would have been build round to country for quick supply as oil companies seek to maximize their profits. More jobs would have been created. More foreign exchange would have been saved. Transport fares and food prices would have come down considerably. Had it been Nigerians suppoted fuel subsidy removal in 2012, we would never had experince any fuel shortage from 2014 to date.

Unfortunately for some, politics got in the way of economic reason. We allowed sentiments to cloud our minds on why subsidy need to be removed. Some politicians even sponsored protest all over the country to resist subsidy removal. One politician even attacked GEJ saying subsidy is the only thing Nigerians enjoy, and GEJ wants to take it away from them. Funy enough the same politician today is in full support of removal of subsidy. So what has changed Obviously nothing has changed. Was fuel subsidy removal not a means to attack corruption and fuel availability then as it is now Was fuel subsidy removal not a remedy for privately build refineries then and now Was fuel subsidy not depleting govt income (higher crude prices = higher subsidy payment) then as it is now Its still the same.
Subsidy proved too unsustainable. It was an economic parasite. It encourages sharp practices and hinders free economic competition. No investor any where in the world would invest in a sector where prices of comodities are fixed by govt led alone build refineries (one of the major reasons why GEJ administration made attampts to remove fuel subsidy).

Unfortunately for us, conditions are even more precarious today. With inflation sky rocketing at two digits and rising food prices every where, it would be a lot more harder for Nigerians to endure subsidy removal than it would have been in 2012. Nigerians purchasing power has dropped considerably over the last few months owing to rising cost of living. Certainly conditions are for more worse today. To make matters worse, there's no garuantee that the N145 per litre price is even realistic. With marketers sourcing for dollars in black market at N320, fuel price per litre may end up selling higher than N145.
So the conditions are going to be much tougher than in 2012.
Though fuel subsidy is the way to go to allow for more open participation from individuals and organizations, the idea that fuel subsidy could not be supported in 2012 because of corruption lacks economic objectivity and is highly ridiculous.

It was supposed to be a lovely day today 24th december 2015, but it was not. Scammers and robbers are on the loose.
My little sis rose up early today and went to the market to buy some items in preparation for christmas celebration tomorrow. After buying the goods, she boarded keke on her way home. At the time she came on board, one person was sitting behind. As they were going, another passenger was picked along the way. Just at the junction closed to my house, the driver pretended that his keke just developed fault and that he need to stop and repair it.
So he stopped by the junction. As they all came down, one of the passengers started preaching to my sis telling her all sorts of things that he is a prayer man and all that. He even said he was on his way to the hospital (gave a hospital name that does not exist) to pray for a sick woman. Dont know how he did it, but he made my sister walked with him leaving her belongings and the other passenger behind with the driver as he pretends to fix his keke. The prayer man then told my sis to walk by herself a distance further so that she could recite the Lords prayer in her mind. He even asked her to give him her phone to hold for her so as to avoid distraction. Like jass my little sis gave him her phone in the believe that he will hold it for her till she finish prayers. She started walking by herself leaving the prayer man behind reciting the lords prayer. As she went further to the point where she's supposed to reach and came back, the prayer man was gone.
Confusion, she came to the place where the keke was packed while it was being fixed, the keke was no longer there. They all left with all her belongings, her phone, purse, the items she just bought everything was gone. It was at that point she realized that she had been robbed.
Pls ladies and gentle men, be careful with passengers you meet on transport. Some of them are nothing but criminals and scammers searching for potential victims to robe. Dont entertain them, dont even allow them preach to you. Infact anybody that tries preaching to you by force give him a dirty slap. Never tolerate those who go about posing as preachers to strangers. No matter how sincere they look don't gave them a second of your time. They are con men.
This incident happended this evening!

Russia has the Base to produce most of what it consumes ; if not all.
All they had to do is reduce or restrict imports and look inwards.
Honestly speaking, the Nigerian non-economy built on the foundation on corruption need to be dismantled first and rebuilt.
In a country with this much poverty, can anyone explain why prices rival those of more advanced and richer countries?
I support the restrictions are in order.
Look inwards
Nigeria's economy was, is, and has always been based on oil. It's no rocket science that the economy will be thrown off balance with fall in oil price, hence the need to move away from oil. But can the country divest her economy from oil with the present economic structure were the federal govt is the biggest player? Definately not.

Activities and policies of CBN are always tied to the fiscal policies of the executive arm of govt. If fiscal policy of the executive is not forth coming, the CBN device ways to bridge the gap. The current policies of CBN is a direct consequence of fall in oil price and lack of fiscal policy direction by the executive.

Marketers stop importation over subsidy fears
By Adewale Sanyaolu

DESPITE receiving N413 billion in subsidy claims, petroleum marketers may have suspended fresh importation of petroleum products, Daily Sun learnt yesterday.

The development, according to some importers, who pleaded not to be named, may have been responsible for the unabated fuel scarcity nation-wide.

Indeed, some marketers told Daily Sun yesterday that the scarcity could linger till February 2016. Specifically, they said the alleged plan by the Federal Government to remove subsidy on petrol next year and commence full deregulation by January 1, is already causing ripples among marketers.

The marketers, who claimed to be in full support of the deregulation of the downstream sector, lamented that the secrecy surrounding its implementation and take-off date is already causing uncertainty within the sector. “Marketers are not against deregulation. But deregulation must be planned for. It must not be a hasty decision. We are entities that invest a lot in importation of petroleum products. If a decision that is to affect us must be taken, then, we must be taken into consideration. For now, uncertainty pervades the sector,’ ’an importer said.

A source said Nigerians are not considering the vagaries involved in deregulation. There are speculations that with deregulation, a litre of petrol would sell for N97, which is a possibility on one hand. But considering the current price of crude oil which sells for about $38 per barrel, what if this price slides further in the weeks to come and the permutation declines to less than N87 for a litre, who bears the loss?

The source said all these certainties surrounding the downstream sector have further dealt a debilitating blow on the current fuel scarcity. But the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, in a swift response to douse tension on the plan to increase petrol price to N97, denied such intention by government. Kachikwu, who is also the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), however, advised Nigerians to dispel such insinuations

He said the discourse has long left the realm of subsidy removal to a more scientific price modulation approach which entails an elastic price mechanism regime to be reviewed periodically to reflect the prevailing international price of crude.

He explained that when operational, the novel price modulation system will place a N97 per litre cap on the price of fuel to ensure that Nigerians are insulated from the vagaries of the global crude price.

“I did not say that refined petroleum products will sell for N97 per litre next year. I said between a band of N87 and N97 we are going to be looking at prices and today, the prices are largely close to N87. So, there is no need to change the price,’’he said

The minister noted that to determine the price of petroleum products in future, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Authority (PPPRA), will undertake quarterly review of the crude market situation.

“I have not put a static figure. PPPRA will have to do the calculation to be able to announce what price of PMS (petrol) will sell for in January; but we do not anticipate any major shift because of the price of crude today,’’ he noted
