Politics / Ekweremadu Storms EFCC, Pays Solidarity Visit To Obanikoro, Bala, Abati, FFK by Jalapa03: 11:18am On Oct 28, 2016
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday, paid a solidarity visit to four key officials of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP., who are being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged graft running into billions of Naira.

The four men-Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Senator Bala Mohammed, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and Dr. Reuben Abati, were taken into custody by EFCC at different times but were united in the cell by the common platform of their party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Reuben Abati served as President Goodluck Jonathan’s Media Adviser, while Fani-Kayode worked towards the end of Jonathan’s tenure as the Spokesman for his Presidential Campaign Organisation.

On the other hand, Obanikoro and Bala Mohammed served as Minister of State for Defence and Federal Capital Territory respectively and ended their tenure about two years ago.

But they were hauled to the EFCC on various allegations bordering on mismanagement of public funds, particularly the $2.1 billion cash for the purchase of arms to fight insurgency in the North East.

Obanikoro is linked with the N4.7 billion allegedly traced to firms close to him but he has already spoken out on how he paid the money out to Governor Ayo Fayose and former Osun Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, but it is not clear why the EFCC is still keeping him.

On the other hand, Mohammed is alleged to have awarded contracts worth N8 billion to fronts and also abused a major land swap deal valued at about N1 trillion.

Fani-Kayode and Abati are linked with collecting funds from the ONSA for undisclosed reasons.

But the EFCC confirmed last night that it has granted what it called ‘Administrative Bail” to Abati on conditions that he drops his International Passport and produces a surety of not below the rank of deputy director in the civil service.

A top source in the commission who confirmed the development, however said that the former presidential aide was yet to meet the bail conditions.

“We will continue to keep Abati until he meets the bail terms,” the source told Vanguard.

It was also learnt that while Abati was preparing to meet his bail conditions and return home, the commission had earlier in the day secured a court warrant to further detain Mr. Mohammed for undisclosed number of days.

The source hinted that since his arrival, Mohammed had not given sufficient information relating to the issues he is being accused of and that the commission needed more time to interact with him.

“We have obtained a new warrant to keep Bala Mohammed because we are not yet through with investigating the issues related to him,” the source hinted.

Before then, at around 5 pm yesterday, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, one of the highest elected PDP leaders in the country, visited the four men at the EFCC headquarters to identify with them.

Findings showed that the DSP was received on arrival at the EFCC premises by the EFCC’s Deputy Director, Operations, Umar Abbasm who also took him round.

According to sources close to the visit, Ekweremadu enjoined the four detainees to be of good cheer and to take their ordeal as a leadership challenge that would embolden them as servants of the people.

“I urge you all to be of good cheer and to keep your spirit high because what is happening to you today happened to our great leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and other top Nigerians who stood for the good of the people of Nigeria,” Ekweremadu told the four men.

Crime / Road Blocks Remain Banned In Nigeria - Police AIG by Jalapa03: 9:55am On Oct 08, 2016
Mr Abubakar Marafa, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6, has warned police officers in the country to maintain the force policy on road block.

Marafa gave the warning on Friday in Uyo during his familiarisation tour of Akwa Ibom Police Command.

He said that since road block has been banned, any officer found indulging in such practice would be decisively dealt with.

He warned officers against the violation of human rights of citizens while carrying out their duties to avoid conflict between them and members of the public.

The AIG said if the police have respect for human rights, it would help them perform better and members of the public would in turn give them respect.

“Road block has been banned; respect the fundamental human rights of Nigerians. We’ve received series of reports about this.

“Respect the right of Nigerians, this will trigger cooperation between the police and the society.

“As a police officer, you must be civil to the members of the public. Incivility occurs when addressing members of the public, like ‘you bloody civilians’,” he said.

Marafa urged them to remember that they were civilians before they became policemen and should prove to the people that the police are their friends.

He said Akwa Ibom had remained one of the states with low crime rate.

The AIG, who is in charge of Rivers, Ebonyi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, commended officers and men of the command for their unrelenting efforts in maintaining adequate security in the state.

He advised them against the misuse of firearms, saying rifles should only be used by officers when under attack.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, Mr Murtala Mani, appealed to the AIG to deploy more policemen to the state.

Celebrities / Rob Kardashian And Blac Chyna Demand $1.5 Million To Televise Their Wedding by Jalapa03: 5:27pm On Sep 17, 2016
More details continue to trickle in as Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian keep up their wedding plans.

From reports now coming in, it appears that the couple will get their wedding televised on E!

Blac Chyna is however reportedly holding out for $1.5million, though, before any deal can be finalised. 'No money, no show,' she says.

According to Radar Online. The deal is being delayed because the TV network is refusing to shell out that kind of money.

Remember that the couple have a running deal with E! for the televising of “Rob and Chyna”. So the TV network is trying to get the wedding on a free based on the terms of that deal, an idea Blac wants to hear nothing of.

"Blac is playing hardball because E! wants to film the wedding, but it's not part of her current contract," a source divulged to the website.

"The network is trying to incorporate the wedding into the agreement, which would mean no more money," the source added.

The soon-to-be mama, who actually plans to eat her placenta, is adamant that they are "not going to get the wedding as part of [Rob & Chyna]," rather, it'd be a part of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians franchise which would make her and Rob entitled to money— $1.5million.

E! has accommodated a number of Kardashian weddings so far— Khloe and Lamar and Kim and Kris Humprey’s short-lived wedding— it's only a matter of time before a deal is trashed out between both parties.

Politics / Benin Palace Chiefs Endorse Ize-iyamu by Jalapa03: 5:12pm On Sep 17, 2016
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the People’s Democratic Party has received a boost ahead of the September 28 governorship polls in Edo State. This came in form of an endorsement from a socio-cultural group, Nedoghama Nedo.

‎The group, comprising chiefs from the palace of the Oba of Benin, traditional priests, business owners and professionals, announced the endorsement after a meeting in Benin, the state capital.‎

The Eson of Benin Kingdom and one of the leaders of the group, Chief Amos Osunbor, explained that, having assessed Ize-Iyamu and his counterpart in the All Progressives Congress, Godwin Obaseki, members of the group were convinced that the PDP candidate had the capacity to take the state to the level desired by its citizens.

Osunbor said, “We have painstakingly assessed the two candidates (Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu) and we have found that Ize-Iyamu is the man for the job.”

In his response, Ize-Iyamu promised to live up to the expectations of the citizens, who he said were committed to effecting a change in government on September 28.

Crime / Suicide Bomber Kills 16 In Mosque In Pakistan by Jalapa03: 3:40pm On Sep 16, 2016
A suicide bomber killed at least 16 people and wounded 35 others as they attended Friday prayers at a mosque in a northwestern Pakistani tribal area, officials said.

The bombing took place in the village of Butmana in the Mohmand tribal district bordering Afghanistan where the army has been fighting against Taliban militants.

“The Friday prayer was in progress at the mosque when a suicide bomber blew himself up killing at least 16 worshippers and wounding 35 others,” a senior tribal administration official told AFP.

“The area is remote and so far I have received only this information from our sources via wireless,” he said.

Another local government official confirmed the information.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Pakistani Taliban in particular routinely attack soft targets such as courts, schools and mosques.

Taliban militants stormed a school in Peshawar in December 2014, killing more than 150 people, mostly children, in Pakistan’s deadliest-ever terror attack.

The army launched an operation in June 2014 in a bid to wipe out militant bases in the northwestern tribal areas and so bring an end to the bloody insurgency that has cost thousands of civilian lives since 2004.

Security in the country has since improved. Scattered attacks still take place, but they are fewer and of a lesser intensity than in previous years.

Education / JAMB To Reject Arbitrary Admissions by Jalapa03: 3:31pm On Sep 16, 2016
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned tertiary institutions in the country against arbitrary and unjust processes in this year’s admission procession.

It says while institutions reserves the right to admit students, they must justly explain why other candidates were not admitted.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede stated this Friday, at the Extra-Ordinary 2016 Technical Committee Meeting on Admissions into First Choice Institutions held at Baze University in Abuja.

He said “The institutions have the right to select (their students) but they must be able to explain if someone is not taken.”

“Universities have the right to determine the criteria for admission but the criteria must be reasonable, explicit and must have been published prior to application by the candidates.”

JAMB also bemoaned the admission criteria of some institutions saying they are supposed to be universal and open to all.

“Even when you are not having candidates from other parts of the country or one reason or another, you should be able to be national no matter your proprietorship,” Oloyede said.

“A situation where you have a federal university with students from only 10 to 15 states of the federation, that shows that the institution is not justifying its existence. We are insisting that every institution must have students from every state of the federation in order to bring national cohesion, unity and students who will be global products.”

He added that JAMB will not initiate or insert any candidate(s) but will,,ensure that no candidate is unjustly treated by any institution as JAMB a referee for justice, equity and standards.

Politics / N76bn Fraud: Former Katsina Governor Turns Himself In by Jalapa03: 3:16pm On Sep 16, 2016
Reports reaching us indicates that the immediate past Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, has turned himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)about an hour ago. This was revealed by his spokesperson, Oluwabusola Olawale.

Two days ago, the anti-graft agency had declared Shema a wanted man. EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, had issued the following statement:

“The public is hereby notified that Ibrahim Shema, a former Governor of Kastina State, is wanted by the EFCC in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy, inflation of contracts, abuse of office, diversion of funds and embezzlement, running into billions of naira.

“The former governor ignored several invitations by the commission since December 1, 2015, when he was first summoned by the agency. All efforts to locate him at his known addresses in Katsina and Abuja were futile.

“The 59-year-old ex-governor hails from the Dutsena-ma Local Government Area of Katsina State. He is tall, light in complexion and speaks Hausa and English fluently. Anybody, having useful information as to his whereabouts, should contact the commission.”

The EFCC statement had been splashed across the major Dailies in Nigeria, alongside a photograph of the ex-Governor.

Soon after however, Shema slammed his successor, Aminu Bello Masari, alleging that he's the subject of a witch-hunt.

Shema is a member of the PDP while Masari belongs to the APC.

In a letter written by his counsel, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Shema said there was an “unwarranted and unexpected campaign of calumny being waged" against him, "coupled with a deliberate attempt to blackmail, denigrate and vilify Shema and his aides".

In a statement sent to Pulse, Masari said he wasn't going to join issues with Shema, adding that “ N70bn is a huge amount of money that we cannot overlook.”

Masari's statement to Pulse also indicated he isn't about to let go of the Shema case because the former governor misappropriated over N76bn received as excess crude oil allocation and diverted over N7.5bn into his private pocket.

The Katsina Governor also alleged that Shema and other top government officials of the Ministry of Local Government Affairs diverted over N750m earmarked for the purchase of drugs.

Shema spokesperson Olawale had told online newspaper Premium Times on Thursday that the Ex-Governor was in talks with the anti-graft agency for a soft-landing.

“His lawyers are negotiating with EFCC officials to cool everything down and allow him come on a new date,” Mr. Olawale said. “We’re hoping there’ll be a breakthrough between today and tomorrow.”

Olawale has just told Pulse that as a law abiding citizen, Shema decided to report himself to the EFCC because "he has nothing to fear".

Pressed on why his Principal had shunned EFCC invitations in the past, Olawale told Premium Times that the anti-graft agency wasn't telling the truth.

“He was told to come back later because the officials in charge were on other assignment.”

“After that, he also wrote them through his lawyers for a new date but they didn’t respond. We also took letters to their office which they declined to collect.

“All these are politically-motivated attacks aimed at rubbishing a man who served the people of Katsina well throughout his tenure. He didn’t only clear all the state’s debts, he also left a robust treasury for the incoming government.”

Agriculture / Eating Rice Always Is Risky, Says Nigeria's Agric Minister by Jalapa03: 10:21pm On Sep 14, 2016
Nigeria's Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has revealed that consuming rice in large quantity on a regular basis was a bit of health risk, adding that substituting it with potato would be welcomed development.

He said that the consumption of rice in the country was rising and that a lot of people were not aware that the rice had some degree of arsenic.

Ogbeh made this known in a meeting with officials of VICAMPRO, an indigenous Agro Company investing in production of Irish Potato on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that his ministry was willing to support local investors with capacity to produce goods and save the country’s foreign exchange.

The minister added that “The volume of importation of virtually everything into this country is too much.

“The demand for dollars in this country as at today is 2.5 billion a week; this is the quantum of dollars Nigerians are asking for to import things.

“Since 1986, we began this habit of importing everything and doing virtually nothing at home to sustain ourselves; now, we do not have the dollars and people are very hungry.

“This day was coming anyway, no matter who was in power; we have the most ridiculous method of devaluing our currency; every week, we auction the dollar and naira goes up.

“We sat and were hoping that by devaluation, we are going to arrive at Eldorado; if we continue like this, it will be a thousand naira to a dollar."

While commending the investor, Ogbeh said that any private sector effort that would develop local production of goods would be fully supported by the ministry.

“We should aggressively take the West African market; there is no reason why we should allow Irish potato from Ireland and France and Belgium into West Africa; it is the same story with onions.

“Under ECOWAS, at the level of government we are going to push for the greater part of the market for local investors,’’ he stated.

He urged VICAMPRO to process potato for use in hotels, saying that hotels in Nigeria imported processed potato from South Africa.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of VICAMPRO, Mr Michael Agbogo, said that potato could bring value worth over one trillion naira annually if properly harnessed.

He said that potato was the fourth most important crop in the world and that a barrel of oil was an equivalent of 14 kilogrammes of potatoes.

According to Agbogo, while current price of crude oil will fetch the country about N16,000 per barrel, the equivalent in potato will fetch the country N39,000.

He said that in terms of value, potato had three times the value of crude oil, adding that it was a huge industry the country could get into.

Agbogo said that Egypt and Algeria were the leading potato producing countries in Africa, with Egypt producing four million tonnes annually from about 100,000 hectares of land.

He said that Nigeria, which had close to 500,000 hectares, was struggling to produce one million tonnes of potato per annum.

He described potato as a “unique crop’’ that could be cultivated three times in a year, including the dry season.

Agbogo said the produce could be grown in Plateau, Kaduna, Adamawa and a number of states across the country, adding that Nigeria could take advantage of the crop.

He said that farmers in Germany and New Zealand made up to 80 tonnes per hectare while their Nigerian counterpart made less than five tonnes per hectare.

He, however, said that there were no seeds in the country and that the seed deficiency was close to 700,000 tonnes per season and two million tonnes per annum.

According to Agboro, the whole of the West African coast cannot grow Irish potato easily and the produce is being imported from South Africa, Belgium and The Netherlands.

He said that Nigeria could take advantage of the local market and the regional market if necessary supports were given to seed development and potato processing.

He said that with favourable policies, potato could generate foreign exchange for the country and reduce rice consumption.

Travel / Operations At Arik Air Resumes After 24 Hours Suspension by Jalapa03: 12:20pm On Sep 14, 2016
At about 11am on Wednesday Arik Air resumed flight activities less than 24 hours after the suspension of its operation.

“Arik Air, West and Central Africa’s largest airline, is pleased to announce that scheduled flights will resume from 11 am tomorrow, Wednesday September 14, 2016,” the airline said in a statement signed by Ola Adebanji, its public relations officer.

“Members of the public and our esteemed customers are advised to discountenance the disparaging allegations, unsubstantiated and uninformed claims about the airline’s inability to meet its financial obligations to aviation fuel marketers and a purported withdrawal of insurance services to Arik Air by its insurers.

“While the current scarcity of aviation fuel (JET A1) has impacted on the operations of airlines in the country, Arik Air is in good standing with its fuel suppliers and has been meeting its obligations to them and to our insurers.

“With the regularization of the required documents relating to the renewal of the insurance, Arik Air will be resuming its normal flying schedule from 1100 hours on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.

“Arik Air regrets the unfortunate inconvenience caused to its customers and reassures our customers of expedient rebooking of any affected flights.”

Arik becomes the first airline to have returned from a suspension of activities, as Aero Contractors and FirstNation are yet to make their comeback.

Foreign Affairs / Colin Powell: Donald Trump Is A National Disgrace by Jalapa03: 12:02pm On Sep 14, 2016
Former secretary of State and retired four-star general Colin Powell called Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump "a national disgrace" and "international pariah," and said "Hillary's mafia" was trying to drag him into Clinton's email scandal in personal emails that were leaked by hackers, according to online news organizations BuzzFeed and The Daily Caller.

Powell allegedly made the remarks about Trump in a June 17, 2016, email to Emily Miller, a journalist who once worked under Powell as a deputy press secretary at the State Department. In the email Powell said Trump, "is in the process of destroying himself, no need for the Dems to attack him," according to BuzzFeed. "Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again," Powell said of the speaker of the House who had only recently decided to endorse Trump at the time of the email.

Around 30,000 stolen Powell emails were given to DCLeaks.com by unnamed hackers, The Daily Caller reported. There is speculation among some computer experts and Democratic politicians that DCLeaks has ties to Russian intelligence services, according to The Wall Street Journal. There is concern that leaks from the site are intended to influence the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.

Colin Powell has not verified the authenticity of the emails. "I wasn't aware of any infiltration of my Gmail account," Powell told The Daily Caller. "If accurate my privacy has been violated." Powell declined to comment to BuzzFeed.

In an Aug. 21 email, Powell told Miller, "the whole birther movement was racist," according to BuzzFeed. "That's what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn't keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim."

Powell's criticisms were not limited to the GOP candidate. Another email allegedly sent from Powell to Democratic adviser Vernon Jordan in May expressed frustration that the Clinton campaign was trying to equate his use of private email accounts during his tenure as secretary of State with her own use of a private email server. The Clinton campaign and its surrogates have frequently cited Powell's use of person email in defending the Democratic nominee.

Powell wrote that he told Clinton's "minions repeatedly that they are making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet they still try. The media isn't fooled and she is getting crucified," according to BuzzFeed. "The differences are profound and they know it."

"Been having fun with emailgate," Powell wrote on March 9, 2015, days after the news broke about Clinton's use of a personal server, according to The Daily Caller. "Hillary's mafia keeps trying to suck me into it."

In an email BuzzFeed says Powell sent to NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell in August 2016, he said he sent Clinton a memo about his email habits at the State Department. "I told her how I was using my personal computer for [unclassified] emails. I said nothing about servers, basements, domains, Clinton foundation, government employees," Powell wrote. "The Clintonistas have been trying for months to connect our usage."

Earlier this month, Rep. Elijah Cummings released a 2009 email Powell sent to Clinton two days after she was sworn in as secretary of State that indicates Powell did advise Clinton on how to use private email to get around federal records requirements. "Be very careful," Powell warned Clinton. "I got around it all by not saying much and not using systems that captured the data."
