The entire church was filled to the brim. The People outside were more than the ones inside as all parishioners sat with nervy expectations.

Of course, this would be the first time we would be having seminarians sent to our parish by the Bishop.

As usual, papa had occupied the first row of the church’s pew and had his big bible sampled on the top of the pew. I could sense he was looking out for me and Chukwu Emeka as he kept moping towards the right corner of the church where we often sit during general mass as such.

“Children of God,… Wonderful people of St. Augustine,” “i present to you the new seminarians that would be staying with us for a complete one year in pursuit of their apostolic work, “Fr.Gabriel said to the entire parishioners during the end of his Homily with his characteristic charming smile......

THE BLIND ALLEY – EPISODE 1


“We’re all going to attend 10:30 am mass tomorrow, ” papa said before we concluded the night prayer”. We only attend such masses each time something big would be held in our parish, St Augustine, hence, 6:30 am mass had always been my ideal mass.

“What could be happening tomorrow, ” i wondered”.

“Nna anyị, ” what’s happening tomorrow that we don’t know of, “mama asked keenly as she tried packing the rosaries and the devotional hymns we used for the night devotion.

“Does it mean that you people don’t normally listen to the announcements after mass?”, “Papa asked,” rather furiously. It was announced last Sunday that we would be playing host to the new sets of seminarians that would be doing their first apostolic works at our parish tomorrow.

“Haba,” i can’t believe non of you heard it and after, you would still come out if they asked for the people that attended Holy mass, “Papa said with a scornful smile......

Mercy left the country with the new man in her life. How she left, Jacinta didn’t know neither did she care.
Two months later, Jacinta got a call from her brother,
“Jacinta, Jacinta your hiding is over.”
“What happened?”
“Roy committed suicide. He killed himself.”
“Killed himself? How did he do that?”
“He left a letter. No he left a letter for both of you.”
“Letter? For me?”
“Yes. Members of his family brought the letter and Mercy is coming back for the burial. I think you should too. Roy is no more and can’t be a threat to you.”
Jacinta thought about it. She decided against travelling back to Nigeria. She asked her brother to represent her at the burial, collect her letter and send to her. She wanted to read what Roy had to write. She wondered why he would even want to write to her. She needed to close this chapter of her life and close it for good.
Eventually, the letter got to her. She opened it at night after her kids had gone to sleep. The letter brought tears to her eyes. This was a man she had loved with her whole heart. He had treated her like a queen and she enjoyed being with him and Mercy. If she didn’t discover the incest, they would still be happily married.

It all started when I was 8 and Roy was 12 years old. My parents employed a maid. We liked her. She was a kind and generous. She was someone we always loved to be around. The lights were turned off and all we could hear were moans from the television and from the maid. We watched with keen interest until we were sent to bed. That night, Roy sneaked into my room and that was how it started. He would touch me and make me do what the girls were doing to the men in the video. This happened almost every night. The plan took almost four months to succeed. With the help of her mother, she was able to gather her things together. She took the evidence and sent it to some prominent men in their compound. She went to the Police and made a report. She told them his threat and asked them to help arrest both of them so she could quickly move her things from the house before he gets back.

She wondered what it was that happens in her home when she is not around. She had a million and one thoughts but she could not pinpoint anyone. The call caused her distress which her colleague noticed.
“Jacinta what is wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“You are looking confused, what is it?”
“I can’t talk about it right now.”
“Come, let’s go in there and talk.”
They went to a waiting room and she discussed the issue with her. She had to confide in someone and her only confidants were in the house which she was not allowed to tell.
“I think you should do it. I am the wife of a Pastor. We can embark on a three-day fasting and prayer session. God will reveal himself on the third day.”
“I have never fasted before. I’m not sure I can do it.”
“You can do it. 6am to 3pm. We will pray specifically for whatever might be happening in your home. It is a small price to pay to find out. Most importantly, don’t tell anyone about this.”
Jacinta thought about it and decided to do it. She got the prayer points and verses to use while praying. She started her prayers. She stayed in her children’s room to pray when she was home. She made sure no one knew about her prayers.
After the third day, she had the conviction to install the cameras. She told Roy and Mercy that she wanted to fumigate the house. They all moved to a hotel for four days. In that time, the cameras were installed successfully and well hidden. Every activity was downloaded to a folder on her laptop and she could watch live activity in the house......

“Why are you just coming back?”

“You have a baby and you stay out all day without caring for her. If not for Mercy, this baby would have suffered.”
The attack on her was too much that she was becoming miserable. She had asked him several times what the problem was but he had no response. What broke the camel’s back was his refusal to have sex with her. She was very hurt at his denial of her conjugal rights. She complained to Mercy.

“Uche finds your relationship with Mercy strange. She said both of you are always in Mercy’s room and lock the door. That Mercy comes to cook in pant and bra and then takes it to her room. I tried to explain to her that it was normal. The problem is that she mentioned it to mother first before........

Hey pastor David, “this woman looks almost like your wife if not her twins, Head pastor joked with my husband as they both entered his office.
Good morning Daddy, yea, she is my mother-in law and she had requested to see you,” my husband replied without any iota of smile on his face.
What could my mother-in-law be up to? He kept thinking…..
Ooh, that’s wonderful, mummy, ” i hope all is well? Yes my son but not entirely ok.
At this juncture, my husband’s nervousness became more vicious.
Talk to me ma, i’m all ears…. But first, let’s say an opening prayer in fellowship, the pastor suggested.
How i wish prayers would solve my problems now, how i wish i never told my mum, several wishes never seized from crossing my mind…..it doesn’t matter now afterall.
To the utmost dismay of both my husband and the head pastor, My mother divulged everything to the pastor. She told the pastor everything I have been hiding about my husband and my current condition.

Baby, so i am going to be a father? He asked almost chocking me as he held me tight right on my bed. My mum stood at akimbo as she watched the whole melo drama. She didn’t say a word because she already knew my husband was headed to an impasse.
How are you feeling?, “Dr. Philip asked as he placed the stethoscope on my chest. I feel fine sir, ” i replied even though i knew i was very far from feeling fine.

I felt relieved because i didn’t inform him about my mum’s visit as i had decided to take my mum to Mrs. Iyanda’s house upon arrival. Mrs Iyanda is a family friend of ours whose kids have all grown and lived abroad. At least, my husband wouldn’t suspect any gimmick.
The door bell rang and i quickly ran to check if my mum had arrived but it was an “aboki” who normally fetches water for us.. Oooops.
It was not until 3pm that mum finally arrived. On her arrival,it was obvious she didn’t come to play ludo game with me as her face was swollen, i knew she must have been crying from the Village to calabar.
I hugged her tightly as we both wept uncontrollably for few minutes. she did a manual check on my body to ascertain that I was truly pregnant. ‘Have you told anybody?’ She asked me. ‘No ma.’ ‘What of the man who impregnated you?’ ‘I haven’t told him either.’ She asked me for his phone number but I pretended I was searching for it while I knew I had deleted it from my phone. ‘Can’t you get the number?’ She asked angrily. I was ashamed of myself at that moment. How do I explain to my mother I don’t have the contact of the man who got me pregnant?.....

It is not good to have miscarriage twice in the same way.’ The laboratory attendant advised me. Thank you sir, it won’t happen again, I assured him. All the smiles I gave to him were all fake. Before my husband traveled we didn’t meet for almost two weeks, he was away for a whole month and now I am five weeks pregnant. Immediately, i felt a slight migraine, cold sweat walloped my palm as i stood still for close to 10 minutes lost in thought. Madam, “is everything ok,? ”the lab attendant queried. Nope,” i’m ok, thanks,’ ‘i replied with another fake smile before storming out.
Oh my God! Is my world coming to an end? This could be the greatest mistake of my life. I needed nobody to tell me my husband isn’t responsible for the pregnancy.
How will I face this shame I have put myself into? My husband is surely going to overreact when he discovers I am pregnant for another man. How will he stand the shame now that he’s a pastor? This is the biggest mess of my life. A million strange thoughts came through my mind. I started nursing the thought of having an abortion even though I have vowed never to commit such an unholy act till I die. But how will I have an abortion without my husband knowing....

My lust for Tony grew by the day. I asked Sarah at the office, ‘how about Tony?’ My friend was shocked on hearing that. I’m sure she was wondering why it was Tony I asked about amongst the three guys she introduced to me? She told me few things I needed to know about him – his profession, tribe and marital status. Those things I heard about him made me like him the more. I stole his phone number from Sarah’s phone unknown to her and I sent him an anonymous text afterwhich he called me immediately.
I wouldn’t want to bother you with too much of what happened that led to how I started seeing Tony. But the difference between Tony and my husband is that he’s caring and loving. I became jealous of the woman who will eventually marry Tony. He filled the vacuum my husband created before he travelled. My attendance in church reduced until pastor became uncomfortable and promised to visit me at home with his wife. I was not in church most days because I was with Tony. Tony brought out the woman in me and made me feel different. I knew I was sinning against God and against my husband but I couldn’t help it, I enjoyed Tony’s company.
My husband was scheduled to be back in two days and yet we haven’t spoken for once. The trauma of his return was a nightmare to me. The fear I won’t be seeing Tony again caused a terrible fever inside me. The fear of being discovered and God’s judgement was the worst trauma of my life.....

This act made me feel really bad and quite uncomfortable . Negative thoughts had suddenly taken over me, series of strange emotions and burning desires had become my acquaintance.

God forbid, ”I roared angrily at Sarah. I am a good Christian and will never do anything of such. I was mad at Sarah for proffering such an unholy advice. For three days I cut off from her and avoided her.
Life was really difficult for me for those three days of seclusion.Nobody to talk to or share my worries with. I found myself wallowing in utter emptiness and delusion. I agreed with my husband to fill the form favourably on one condition. I sent him a text message on Saturday evening “I will fill the form as you want on one condition, that the day you lift your hand against me again, pastor will hear about it”. He replied immediately, “Deal!”. I picked the form and filled the spaces favourably with tears in my eyes. I began to ask myself several questions. “I hope you are doing the right thing Folake?”. “I hope you will not regret this your action?”. “Assuming he does not change like he promised, what next will you do?”. “Do you think you will ever be happy again in this marriage?” That Saturday night was the second longest I ever had. The first was the day I realized I will never see Kenny again.
I made up my mind to return home after Sunday service on the condition that he will send his sister away. I gave him that condition so as to reduce the number of enemies I will contend with on my return. I submitted the form to the pastor after service on Sunday and he almost did not look at the content before going for his stapler machine. I said softly, “sir, aren’t you going to look at the form before stapling it?”. He smiled and replied “I know what’s there already”. He was so sure there will never be anything negative about Bro David.....
