Create a schedule If you do not want your child’s routine to be disrupted while you’re away, ensure you create a schedule that whoever is looking after your children can easily and strictly follow. You can create the schedule using Google doc. Leave contact information Make sure that anyone who is looking after your children has a list of phone numbers and email addresses for anyone they might need to contact in case of an emergency or if and when you are unreachable. It may be the contact information of your friends, neighbours, husband or family members. Have important contact numbers Check your phone if you have important contact numbers on your phone. If you do not have the contacts, ensure you get them before you leave. This will enable you to stay in touch. If you can, have a phone book for all your numbers. Stay in touch With the diverse technology available today, there are so many ways you can stay in touch. This is because many messaging apps now have video features. You have Skype, BBM and WhatsApp at your disposal. With these messaging apps, you can easily connect with your loved ones wherever you are in any part of Nigeria as far as there is the internet. With 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria can be easily be referred to as a culturally rich country with different ethnic backgrounds and culturally resplendent practices to admire. Marriage traditions is one of such culturally resplendent practices and Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 interesting Nigerian marriage traditions to know. The Fulani Sharo Tradition In what is referred to as an ‘act of bravery’ by the groom before he marries his bride, the potential groom is flogged publicly just before the nuptial and is expected not to wince, cry or show he is in pain. It is believed that this process will help prove the worth of the potential groom in terms of strength, endurance and resilience because the nomadic Fulani are one group of people known for their hard work, courage and discipline. The tradition is more or less a test of the strength of the groom, and any groom who cannot endure the required number of strokes losses out of the marriage race. The Virginity Test This is an ancient marriage tradition that has over time become a controversial tradition hotly debated by two schools of thoughts. One school of thought supports it and believes that a female’s pride is in having her hymen intact, and the other school of thought considers it a crude practice that is a relic of a lost age in these modern times. The practice is typically carried out after the wedding ceremony, when the groom is expected to consummate the marriage with his bride. The family of the groom waits outside, at the entrance of the room, for the groom to come out with a blood stained bed-sheet as a confirmation that he married a virgin. If the bride fails the test, a euphemistic message to that effect is sent to the bride’s family, and this spells doom for the woman because she will have to live with the shame of defiling herself before marriage. Igbo Marriage Tradition of Fund Solicitation This is one interesting marriage tradition that has been hotly debated over time and has prevented a number of eligible suitors from marrying their love interests. The custom is a peculiar and largely expensive one that involves presenting a list of gift items, sometimes alongside cash, before marriage to the prospective bride can take place. The list gets more expensive if the prospective bride is a bachelor degree holder, and increases significantly if she has acquired a masters or doctorate degree. Many a times, this fund solicitation has led to the collapse of courtships after the man realizes he cannot meet up with the challenging requirements for marriage. Custom of Not Marrying Until the Eldest is Married This is mainly synonymous with the Igbo custom, although it is currently not as widely practiced as it was in the past. It is based on the belief that marriage should follow in order of seniority. This tended to cause a lot of fighting and controversy when the younger sibling will be ripe and ready for marriage with a prospective bride or potential suitor, but will have to wait for the older sibling to marry first. Many men and women who found themselves in such situations, decided to postpone the idea of marriage till their elders tied the knot or, if they couldn’t wait, go ahead with the marriage without the blessings of their family. In the case where it was the lady that was affected, some men would prefer to leave the lady and marry outside such tribes if they couldn’t wait for the lady’s elder sister(s) to get married first. The Traditional Wedding Act of Prostrating This is a Yoruba traditional wedding act that is practiced even in modern times. Respect is highly regarded in the Yoruba kingdom and this goes out to every man intending to marry a Yoruba girl. The groom and his friends will have to prostrate to the bride’s family, regardless of what they are wearing – be it imported lace or even gold; there is simply no escaping the tradition. Usually, after the prayers are said, the groom dances in with some of his friends and prostrates before the bride’s family. Source: http://www.opinions.ng/5-interesting-nigerian-marriage-traditions/

There has been a huge outpouring of emotion since we broke the news of the sad death of the co-founder and CEO of Pass.Ng, one of Nigeria’s leading Internet start-ups in recent times and probably its biggest online learning platform. A lot of people are still in shock and disbelief at how such a brilliant achiever could die at just 25. Sadly, some have questioned if his platform or achievements are that stellar. The best way we believe we can respond to such people is to present Samson Abioye at his best doing what he loved doing -providing solutions faced by Nigeria’s youth and inspiring others. This event held at LAUTECH and it is testament to his brilliance. TEDxIsaleGeneral event, Samson Abioye speaks on: The Power of Consistency as part of the TED Talks series in Nigeria. By: Hannah Ross Meeting people and getting along with them is a major task in the contemporary professional market. There is a huge diversity in today’s competitive world. Resultantly, we get to meet new people with varying attitudes on a daily basis. This is the reason why big companies stress so much on the social skills and public abilities of their recruits. We don’t get the same vibe from everyone, we meet regularly. It is extremely easy to get along with some while you immediately start feeling uncomfortable around others; with whom you can’t connect. This, however, doesn’t mean that you don’t engage with them. You are required to meet them, talk to them, and work with them even when you aren’t good friends with them. You will encounter people you don’t agree with. So, it is better to be approachable when meeting such people, rather than confronting them. You cannot limit your boundaries when it comes to meeting people. You should be mentally prepared to get along with anyone. There are certain ways in which you can deal with the people you can’t stand in general, when it comes to your professional life. Certain details of these ways are given as under: Be Cooperative Cooperation is the first and the most important thing when it comes to excelling at your office. You shouldn’t confine yourself to a comfort zone rather you should look to go out of that. Be ready to work with the people you don’t like. Avoid Confrontation Confrontation isn’t a solution to any problem. So, if you’re having problems with someone at your workplace, you should avoid confrontation at all costs. You should be professional when it comes to dealing with people. Never let the emotions get better of you. Get over Negative Remarks Be ready to face denouncing comments while working with the negative people. But, you should limit your happiness to the opinions of others. Ignore their negativity and focus on yourself. Surround yourself with Positive People Develop a strong support system. Assess the people you’re working with and develop strong bonds to the ones you feel comfortable with. You shouldn’t cut off from everyone around you. Those who are welcoming and approachable should be approached. Engage them. Offer your help wherever possible and seek their help when you need it. Focus on the Bright Side When you’re meeting or engaging with negative people, it is very much up to you that either you want to keep them at bay or want to give them a chance. By giving them a chance, you might be able to learn something new from them. So, always focus on the advantages of getting along with people rather their negatives. Set Barriers While working with the negative people set some barriers for your individual self and make these clear to them as well. Stay extremely professional and just focus on the work you are assigned. Don’t engage them on personal grounds. This will help you maintain some professional environment with them. Stand up for what’s Right Never compromise your dignity and your rules for anyone. Always stick to your cause and stand up for what’s yours. Moreover, you should fight for what you feel is right. Lastly, point out what you don’t feel is right. Own your Decisions Don’t play the victim card and don’t let other play it against you as well. Own your work and your decisions. Stay true to what is yours. If working with them doesn’t go as planned then don’t do the blame game. Be Realistic You should always be realistic about professional life. It is not a bed of roses. Competition and difference of opinions often develop space between people which isn’t always easy to bridge. So don’t worry about it. You don’t need to be friends with everyone. Let the work do the Talking Lastly, you should be extremely professional in your approach. All of your focus should be on your work and to get better at it. Your work should speak for yourself. Do what you do in such a way that no one else can do. Discover your inner potential and invent a unique way of doing things. Work so brilliantly that your haters become your fans These are the things which successful are likely to do when they come face to face with the people they don’t like. Avoiding confrontation and problems is the best way to engage with them. In fact, you should be totally professional in your behavior. Work with them if you have to and give you best on the field. source: http://www.jarushub.com/10-ways-successful-people-deal-with-people-they-dont-like/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Even with the nature of our society, retiring early is possible and achievable (especially if this has always been your lifelong goal), you only need to be willing to make some sacrifices. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 4 things to do if you want early retirement. Avoid Spending Mindlessly The most important step in controlling your finances enough to make early retirement possible, is to track your spending. You have to know what you’re spending on and if it’s necessary for you to spend that much on it, or even spend on it at all. Know how you spend, determine necessary expenses and focus your efforts on reducing or eliminating negligible or unnecessary expenses. Stop Lifestyle Inflation Try to avoid living at the maximum standard your income allows. Find a middle point and contently build your life around that, while you save and wisely invest the rest to further increase your earnings. If your income increases, try not to over boost your spending and put a reasonable portion of the extra money into savings. You can also apply this strategy to other surplus money like bonuses, and other small windfalls. This will benefit you far more than buying the latest gadgets and travelling to the most exotic locations all the time. Go Home-Made Opt for home-made food, as opposed to eating out all the time. If you’re skeptical about just how financially beneficial this strategy is, give it a shot for a month and see the results. You can even save some more money if you know how to negotiate well for groceries and food stuffs at the market. In addition to the financial benefits of going home-made, there’s also the health benefit of eating fresher and healthier meals. Stop Trying to Please or One-Up Your Friends This is one of the biggest money wasters and the greatest enemy to early financial independence. Keeping up with the Joneses and trying to live up to your friend’s standard can end up not only robbing you of a chance at early financial independence, but it can also mess you up financially. Avoid going out all the time, spending in places you never intended to spend in, and spending lavishly on things that you could care less about because of so-called friends. Stick with friends with the same financial mindset as yours, who will contribute positively to your goal of achieving early financial freedom. You’ll be better off for it. source: http://www.jarushub.com/4-important-things-to-do-if-you-want-to-retire-early/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Many people now perform transactions with their mobile phones because it is convenient. But it does come with certain risks. Hence, you have to know that you will be vulnerable at some point if you are careless when doing the mobile transactions. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares some tips to make mobile transactions safer to prevent you from losing your hard earned money. Monitor your accounts regularly It is now very easy to monitor your account. Except in some certain situations, you do not physically need to go to the bank. With online banking, you have 24 hours access to your account so take advantage of this and check your account on a regular basis. This is good for those who frequently use mobile banking. Read app reviews before download While inside the app store you shouldn’t just download the first option you see. There can sometimes be other third-party developers who will create apps linked to online stores. To determine the authenticity of the app, just read the review. Protect your Mobile devices with passwords To prevent unauthorised access to your phone, you should use passwords especially if you settle bills and transfer money with your phone. Always log out when you are done Imbibe the habit of logging out of your online banking session when you have finished your business. This will reduce the chances of someone else accessing your account. Avoid clicking through emails Very few financial institutions will send you an email asking you to provide any of your login details. If you receive an email that appears to be from your bank that asks for such details then treat it with suspicion and delete it immediately. Do not even open it. Set up account notifications Some people do not activate alert because they do not want their money deducted. But they will be the first to shout blue murder if their monies disappear from their account. Hence, it is safer and advisable to set up notification so that you will be aware of your account activities. source: http://www.opinions.ng/6-tips-making-safe-mobile-transactions/ |

By: Emma Norman College graduation is finally over, and you are about to enter the once-a-fantasy-world you have always dreamed, your first workplace, not to mention bombarding a number of job hunting websites, LinkedIn, industry job boards, or other mediums to land you the first ever job. But let’s not forget you are yet to pass the interview phase. Remember, an interview after the graduation is quite different as compared to the interviews you have given for on-campus jobs or internships. This is a full-time employment, and not a part-time job for only a couple of month’s service. This is the job that will mark your first genuine employment on your resume, and will most likely set the tone of your professional experience for years to come. As for this blog post we are going to discuss some common, yet major mistakes that young graduates tend to make in their first job interviews. 1. Replying, and not listening to what the interviewer says At the start of an interview, some interviewers follow the strategy of throwing a 2-minute speech regarding the company profile and other introductory information before providing you the chance to respond. This is the chance you need to capture, take notes and focus on every word they say. In order to show affirmation to the interviewer, some candidates like to respond to everything he/she says. However, this can also make the interviewer feel that you aren’t really listening, rather you just like the sound of your own voice. Also, there is a high chance that by repeated commenting you might miss something crucial the interviewer has just stated. It’s better to listen closely to everything the interviewer has to say, you can respond if the professional ask you a question or when there is a natural or prolonged pause in the conversation. 2. Failing to remember the job description The fact doesn’t require further emphasis due to its already high significance, you need to be thoroughly prepared with all the facts of the company’s nature of business, product portfolio, and other vital information drilled in your mind before entering the interview room door. Further, the details of the job description should also be used to explain your qualifications. On the other hand, forgetting to memorize your job description is a one-stop nightmare which gives the impression of unprofessionalism and incompetency. One of the most important questions the interviewer will inquire you with will be how your past job relates to this job. Both you and the HR professional in the room wants your case to grow stronger, but only if you have a clear idea what the company is looking for. This is how you will be able to justify your point on how you can be the best man for the job. Try to memorize the pointers of your job description that consumed most of your workday and you can communicate in the best manner possible. 3. Interested in the company, benefits, less in the role Undoubtedly, it is your first job interview, you’re highly excited and nervous at the same time. But most of the time this excitement is nothing but a mere ‘excitement’, and not for the job. Explaining how well you are informed taking the company details is fine, but the real defining factor is how well you are going to perform the job applied for, rather than getting enticed by the free lunch coupons, a month of annual leaves, education allowance, etc. You can always go with something like, “I am well-aware that ABC has a great culture, besides that I am more intended to perform my XYZ job responsibilities way better than everyone else and contribute through effective ways for enhancing the overall efficiency of the team”. And now is the time to insist your case in a tempting manner. 4. Depending on college accomplishments This is one serious mistake especially recent graduates need to stay vigilant from. The HR personnel sitting in front of you may have graduated years before you have, and are definitely not interested nor impressed in your extra-curricular activities, A+ grades in the electives, or other college routine tasks. Rather than talk will be more oriented towards real-world problems and decision making scenarios. It’s better to embrace the reality: college things are days of the past. Keep your focus on the instances that reflect the post-graduation time as that’s the realm your potential employer is residing in. A better choice would be, “Although I earned a nice 3.7 GPA, but I am well-aware that it isn’t the metric used to grade me in this role. However, maintaining the same commitment and dedication is what I have to show you here as well”. 5. Negativity It’s simple, what experiences you had at any past employer, never talk ill regarding them anywhere else. Agreeably the interviewer will ask you the reason for applying for a new job, while it doesn’t mean you start playing the blame game and pour out displeasures at your past workplace, but explain the reason why this role is perfect for you. Presenting a bad image of the past employer will force the interviewer to think you are just asking for a way out. Furthermore, they might also begin to doubt you regarding the things you have written in your current job descriptions and skills. The tip may look more suited for established professionals, but the same consideration applies for recent college graduates as well. Even if you have experienced some real injustice or mistreatment at the hands of a bad manager, it’s time to leave the things as-is and focus on your new employment opportunity. source: http://www.jarushub.com/5-major-mistakes-graduates-make-in-their-first-job-interviews/

We’ve been impressed with the Gionee A1’s large battery and powerful selfie camera, but we wanted to see how other Gionee A1 users were getting on with their device now that they’ve had some time to put it to the test. It turns out owners have plenty to say — both the good and the not so good… A lot of owners liked the Gionee A1’s design, which comes with a metal back and a glass finish at the front; a lot of users described it as “premium”. One owner said it does get a bit slippery, but thankfully Gionee offers a case as well as a screen protector in the box. We also got a lot of positives on the camera and battery, a lot of female users talked about how great the phone was for selfies, and also a lot of guys talked about how you can carry around the phone for a day without charging. We also had a lot of people online going on and on about how impressive the phone is, not a single issue with performance. Multitasking is on point, no hanging problem, Battery last long with full day backup, Ultrafast charging is awesome, multitasking is 10/10. One user on twitter described the Gionee A1 as “GBAM” we are not sure exactly what that means but we are guessing it’s a positive review. It wasn’t all good though we still had some people talking about how all the Gionee smartphones all look like, and how the phone is not budget friendly but even with the criticisms, people who’ve bought the phone have found plenty of reasons to be satisfied with their purchase. Based on some of the reviews we got online and offline, it turns out the A1 is shaping up to be one of Gionee’s best-regarded phones yet. source: http://www.opinions.ng/wont-believe-people-saying-new-gionee-a1-smart-phone/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
As an education and career website, we often get inquiries from students who need advice on courses of study to pursue in the university. Most of them usually ask for the popular courses. Actually, in Nigeria today, course of study hardly matters again, except in few specialist cases. Here, JarusHub editors have compiled the list of good courses students tend to underrate. Their admission requirements are not usually stiff and most of them are available in many schools. Prospective undergraduates, especially average students, should consider them. 1, Sociology Two years ago, one student reader of JarusHub sent us an email saying he was ashamed of telling people he was studying Sociology. He was desperate to cross over to Economics. We advised him to continue with Sociology and study hard to be exceptional in it. He came back two years later to say our advice turned out to be a life changer as he made a first class in Sociology. Being deficient in Mathematics, he might not have made a first class in Economics. Most companies lump Economics together with other Social Sciences courses in their requirement specification. What that means is that, anytime a vacancy is advertised for Social Sciences graduates, his first class degree in Sociology would earn him shortlisting before someone with second class upper in economics. What a short cut! If you make a 2.1 in Sociology, you are likely going to be better off in the job market than someone with 2.2 in “more respected” courses like economics. 2, Political Science We think Political Science is a little tougher than Sociology, but if you are good in reading long texts and writing and telling stories, you may consider Political Science. For Economics, you need to be at least average in mathematics to do well. You don’t need that for Political Science. So if you are not sure of yourself in Economics, just go for Political Science, which is less competitive, for admission at least. If you do well there, you stand better employment chances post-school, to someone who “forced” themselves to study “economics” just to be seen to be doing socially acceptable course. A 2.1 is Political Science is better than a 2.2 in Economics. 3, Philosophy Philosophy as a course hardly has tough admission requirements, at least compared to Law. Philosophy as a course improves your critical reasoning. It also improves your argumentative skills. If you do well as a Philosophy student, you should not struggle much in the labour market. You could apply for job in journalism, in international relations, and many other fields. 4, Languages A good number of students that find themselves studying languages in Nigeria, especially English and French, actually applied for Law and were only offered the courses because they couldn’t meet the admission requirements for Law. Well, as an English or French graduate, you could fit into many roles. You could compete with Mass Communication and Journalism graduates for journalism job. If you are a French graduate, you could even consider opportunities outside the shores of Nigeria. If you find a job in say a bank, you stand a higher chance of being considered when international opportunities arise because of the fact that you have multi-lingual background. After all, English proficiency is already by default. 5, Hospitality and Tourism Management Hospitality and tourism sector is growing in Nigeria. Not many people have the specialized skills. With a degree in such hardly popular course, you could a chance of early mover advantage. Whether advertised or not advertised, you could write to 30 hotels, with good cover letters, and sell yourself. After all, you have an uncommon degree that is relevant to them. You are not likely to be turned down in all. 6, Physical & Health Education Sport industry is growing in Nigeria. More and more people in the middle to upper class are paying attention to fitness. Professional fitness coaches are still low in supply what we have are emergency fitness coaches. Sport-based businesses – from astro turf to gym centers to health clubs to even standard sports centers – are opening on weekly basis. As a professional Physical and Health educator, you stand a chance of employment in this emerging industry. 7, Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics Graduates of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics can apply for a good number of job openings that engineering graduates apply for. You come head to head with them for a number of vacancies, even in the oil and gas industry. The first indigenous MD of Shell, Basil Omiyi, studied Chemistry as a matter of fact. A good number of graduates of these courses work in the oil and gas industry. You spend 4 years in the university and compete for same jobs with the graduate that spent 5 years. 5 for the price of 4. So don’t panic when you are offered chemistry instead of chemical engineering or physics instead of mechanical engineering. 8, Education In an era where many companies don’t care about your course of study, if offered a course in Education, just do it diligently and make a good grade. You can actually apply for same job as graduates of same course without Education. A 2.1 Economics Education graduate is likely going to be invited for same job vacancy as someone that studied Economics (Social Sciences). Many graduates of Education courses work in banks, consulting firms etc. On top of that, you have a broader option as you are a first choice for teaching jobs – even if temporary instead of being idle – provided you are able to prove that you are as good as the guy that did same course without B.ED 9, Public Health This branch of Medicine is a silent money and network spinner. It deals with prevention of diseases. Many international organizations and research organizations are pumping money into Nigeria for this. Good money, sometimes in dollar. If you studied medicine at undergraduate level, you may want to consider specialization of Public Health at Master’s. 10, Nursing Every health organization needs nurses. Nurses may not earn the mouth-watering salaries of the doctors, but they are hardly out of job. Less rigorous training compared to Medicine. Less years in school. You may even just have to go to School of Nursing, rather than conventional university. So, there you have it. Don’t set your eyes on the big name courses only. Handling stressful or difficult clients is not something many businesses look forward. Regardless, they have no choice than to deal with the client’s complain because they are the oil that lubricates any business. Clearly, they exist in every business but you know that it is better to keep them if you can. This is why they say that the customer is never wrong. So, how may you keep your difficult clients? Jumia travel, the leading online travel agency, shares ways to keep your difficult customers happy. Allow them to vent Sometimes, you have to just keep quiet and allow your client to express everything on their minds. You should note that they become difficult because they feel they cannot say what they have experienced by using your service. Reassure them After allowing them to express themselves, do not let them feel that you do not have their best interests at heart. The simplest thing to do is to reassure them that every decision is to make them happy. Apologise Like earlier said customers are king. They are always right. No matter how infuriated you may be with them, you just have to see things from their perspective. Hence, always take the blame, even when you know that you are not at fault. Whatever the case may be, always take responsibility. Come up with a solution This is probably the most effective strategy you can use when handling a stressful client. When there’s a problem, a good business person comes up with a solution. Learn from the situation These difficult customers have a lot to teach businesses. So, evaluate who your difficult customers are, then evaluate why they are this way. You may want to deal with them differently because you know they are trouble. But at the same time, they are loyal. Dictionary.com With how students sometimes get words mixed up, it is a marvel that more students don’t have at least one dictionary app on their mobile devices. The process for applying for a visa is very exhausting and rigorous. Hence, it will leave a sour taste in the mouth after serious planning, submitting and been interviewed for a visa, you end up being denied. As such, if you are about to make your visa application, then you should look out for these signs shared by Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, to further prepare you against a visa rejection. You cannot clearly explain the source(s) of your funds The majority of embassies will assume that applicants are seeking permanent entry into their country until you prove them otherwise. And one way to prove them otherwise is to present evidence that you have strong economic reasons to return to your country following your stay. What other way to do this than your bank statement? Hence, ensure that your cash inflow and outflow are credible. They do not want to give visas to criminals. Your visa agent cannot answer basic visa questions If your visa agent promises to deliver to you a visa without asking you basic questions that only you have answers to, you should feel very uncomfortable about that application. It may most likely be rejected. You have a record visa denials If you have a record of refusals from a particular embassy, they will know that you arguably are desperate to leave your country. If you have been refused once at any embassy, they have the record. Hence, do not submit any visa application without consulting reliable visa businesses for advice. The more you are rejected, the more your visa application will be denied and vice-versa. You apply for the wrong visa category There are different visa categories and, for every visa you are applying for it must correspond with your lifestyle. If it does not support the category of visa you are applying for, that is a strong signal, which you address before even submitting your application or else you will suffer the embarrassment of a rejection. You have an uneasy feeling about an answer If you have answered a question on your application but you don’t feel comfortable about the answer you have provided, then you need to take steps back and peruse your responses again. The reason is that, you will unconsciously communicate your uneasy feelings to your interviewer while answering that question; particularly if they seem interested in that particular answer. In almost everything, there are etiquettes and rules of engagement. This also applies to travel. As such, when you are on a getaway, there are occasional etiquettes lapses that you make that you may be unaware of. Accordingly, Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 6 must know and simple travel etiquettes you must not ignore be it on the plane, train, in a bus, or car. Check before you recline If you fly often, you must have encountered the vexation of the person in front of you reclining the seat into your space. There is nothing wrong with reclining but it is only reasonable for you to look behind you before you do it. Allow the people in front of you get off first The plane, car or bus pulls up to the gate or bus stop and every person wants to get off at the same time. Clearly, this is impossible. Hence, the straightforward rule is to allow people in front alight first. This will prevent people from being trampled upon arrival. Minimise the noise If you have to stay in a hotel, you have to minimise the noise emerging from your room. This is because some of these hotels are not soundproofed enough to keep loud noises from penetrating or reaching other people’s room. Be mindful Some people like to watch movies, listen to music or catch up with work. Others read or play games. Whichever you prefer to do, remember that you are in a public space. You should be mindful of the person next to you. Tip appropriately First, there is nothing absolutely wrong with tipping. The problem is when you tip indiscriminately that you give out all your pocket money. Wait for the next elevator We are always in a haste that we are unwilling to wait for the next turn. This goes for the elevator. The question is, should people in the elevator push the “door open” button? Or should new arrivals just forego the closing doors and wait? The best option is for you to just be patient, and wait a few minutes for the next elevator to arrive. source: http://www.opinions.ng/6-must-know-travel-etiquettes/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Earlier today, I got the feedback from my business partner and COO of JarusHub, Olatunji Abdulkabir Olajide, who runs the career services outfit on daily basis and interfaces with clients more, that one stumbling block to our business growth is the mentality among most of our clients that “Jarus is made. Why should I pay him?” People who see Jarus as made and he should just dash jobs and give them money. He said they feel our services are expensive. I was actually angry. How can someone say that when we provide loads of free resources on careers through our website and the premium services we offer are the least priced in Nigeria, and ridiculous when compared with what obtains in other societies. In the UK or US, one-hour interview coaching goes for as much as $200 (N60,000). We charge just N5,000 for 2-hour coaching. Google how much ex-McKinsey turned career guru Victor Cheng charges for consulting interview coaching. We thought to consider going upmarket, refocusing our model from graduates to high-end clients. But that is not even the issue here. I told Abdulkabir, I have done everything possible to de-personalize JarusHub. JarusHub is owned by 4 people – Myself, Kabir, Jacob and Okpanachi. It is a registered company with employee that receives salaries, office it pays rents for and maintains (power and other utility bills, internet costs etc), and other costs (adverts etc). Do people expect us to finance these from the freebies? So what has Jarus got to do with it? Will you say because Dangote is rich, for example, you will not buy his N100 noodle product? As we strategize to move out of this backward client mentality, Kabir referred me to a recent article written by Zimbabwean multi-millionaire and former CEO of Econet Wireless, Strive Masiyawa, which eloquently addresses this issue. The article: THE BIGGEST SECRET FOR TURNING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS INTO A BIG BUSINESS (1) By Strive Masiyawa Your business must have a life separate from you! Years ago I shared with you the sad story of an old man who had a supermarket at a popular location. He boasted that he started his day at 4am and left at 12am. His business never grew because two of the Ps were missing: # People: He did not hire people with management and leadership skills to run his business. # Process: He did not invest in the processes that would have allowed him to run multiple locations with lots of time to spare. You don’t ever need to visit a business if these two P’s are in place! When your business is small, you obviously must work every day and every night to make it a success, with energy and passion, and with a deep desire to make it bigger. Now I know some of you are working your hearts out just to make ends meet every day, to feed your kids and get their school fees paid. Still in your entrepreneurial hearts I know you are working towards a future where your business grows from a small business to a big one… Keep at it, because no matter how small your business is right now, what I am going to say applies to you, too. The three Ps. For the past several weeks I have discussed the importance of: # People # Product # Process If you’re dreaming of building a business that grows very big, I want to give you another perspective and share a few important secrets on this same topic. Let’s talk. You have heard the expression “get a life”? Your business must also have a life! It’s important to allow your business “to get a life of its own,” separate from you. It must be a separate living persona that has its own needs, separate from you. You are not the business and the business is not you. Imagine you run a cash business like a supermarket and a dear relative comes in with an emergency asking for money. Can you say to that person: “I’m sorry I have no money; what I have belongs to the business”? People who run big successful businesses never treat the money of the business as their own. If this surprises you, then you are not yet ready for the big league! A friend came to me once and asked me to lend him some money and I said I didn’t have any. I could see the bitterness in his face as he said, “Everyone knows you have money because your business is really doing well.” “The business is really doing well, but I’m not the business,” I replied. “The two of us are different from each other.” Now if you’re new to big business, you will not accept this, but if you went to Bill Gates or Patrice Motsepe they will tell you the same. Let me tell you, if you cannot do that, you will never be able to own a truly big business. #Tough talk? You better believe it! Similarly, you cannot take the money belonging to the business to build a house for your family or buy a new car. You are only entitled to your salary which should be fixed and taken only when others get paid. You are also entitled to a small portion of the profit, taken only from Year 4 of successive years of profit. Cap it at 25%. I have known some absolutely brilliant, innovative entrepreneurs in Africa and yet they struggled with this one thing: They would not allow a business to have a separate life from them. The entrepreneur who allows the business to have its own life is the one who builds a big business. source: http://www.jarushub.com/jarus-is-not-jarushub/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Interview as a traditional selection tool is being dumped by companies all over the world. Companies in Nigeria are not left behind. Here are the 5 key skills recruiters look for when assessing a candidate through Assessment Center:- 1. Analytical Skills The recruiter is looking at the candidate’s ability to analyse events or issues or scenarios. This is tested through group task or group discussion, oral presentation and case studies. Many candidates find it difficult to draw connections on the spot, or think through issues, or get the bigger picture. Assessment center will reveal this. 2. Ability to work effectively in a team Group discussion or group task, which is an integral part of an assessment center, is perhaps the most critical tool used to evaluate the candidate’s ability to work in a team. In an AC, you will be made to discuss an issue or a problem or a case study as a team and proffer solution. This is to test your team work skills. 3. Effective Communication Your communication skill is tested in every tool that makes up an AC – interview tests your one-on-one communication, group task tests your communication with a team, presentation tests your oral communication skills. 4. Leadership Ability Most interviews ask you questions about your leadership skills, but a practical way to show it is through group task in a team discussion and you happen to be the team lead. How well you coordinate the team tells much about your leadership skills. 5. Ability to Cope under Pressure AC is a highly pressured environment. In some companies, like First Bank and Shell, it’s a full day job; in others, like PwC and KPMG, it just for few hours. In any case, there is pressure. You will be drilled. You are moving from one assessment to another. It is a sapping exercise. If you do well under such circumstance, the employer believes you are good enough for their job. JarusHub Coaching gives your mock exercise that can aid your performance on the D-day! source: http://www.jarushub.com/top-5-skills-employers-look-for-in-assessment-center/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

There is a lot more to the tech industry than we realize. There are many opportunities to explore in the industry and many misconceptions to dispel; there are also some dynamics to understand, the knowledge of which can help you make smart investments in the tech industry.Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 things you should know about the tech industry. The Industry is Not all About Coding The tech industry consists of a lot more than coding. There are lot of jobs and technical skills available in the tech industry aside coding and programming, some of which include: design, data analysis, setting up systems and processes, project management, technical writing, web hosting and so on. Proficiency in Coding Does Not Depend on How Good You are at Math or Science Coding is about problem solving and logic, and you will find that some of the best coders admit to not being good at or even liking math or science. In fact, coding is easier learned by those coming from backgrounds or professions where problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail, are involved. There is Room for Creativity Most people associate technical jobs like those in the tech industry, with a lack of creativity. However, the tech industry is all about finding creative ways to solve the world’s tech problems. Aside the data science field in the tech industry, there is also a design field that relies on creativity to come up with attractive phone and laptop designs, as well as website designs and other tech designs we see. The Tech Industry is Not Entirely Male Dominated It is true that a large percentage of the tech industry is made up of men, but the industry is not completely male dominated. For example, the data science field of the tech industry is mostly made up of men, but the design fields have a larger percentage of women. As much as there might be a lot of men in the tech industry, there is still room for women who are passionate about tech. Profit Margins Really Matter In the tech industry, competition tends to be fierce and this makes it difficult for companies to maintain their profit margins over the long term. This can lead to disastrous results for investors, as a result investors are very particular about profit margins. Therefore, before buying stocks in the tech industry, investors carefully consider if the company will be able to maintain its pricing power over the long term. source: http://www.opinions.ng/5-things-know-tech-industry/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Relationships aren’t supposed to be selfish, while considering yourself it is important and only fair that you take a step back and also consider your partner – consider how you might be hurting your partner and things you might be doing to turn your partner off. Jumia Travel shares 5 things you do that hurt your partner and kill your relationship in the process. Living Outside What the Two of You Can Afford It is important to live within what the two of you can afford. Once you’ve decided to be in a relationship with someone, you have to learn to respect what the person is earning per time and adjust your expenses to align with it. Avoid belittling and insulting your partner for the inability to meet your expenses, rather learn to love and appreciate while adjusting your expenses to align, or work hard, alongside your partner, to increase earnings to be able to accommodate these expenses. Constant Negativity In relationships, you should learn to choose your battles. Even if your partner is doing something wrong, it’s not every wrong thing that you comment on, complain about or intend to change. Choose your battles. There are somethings you should just let go off completely or let go off in the mean-time to address later. You have to be wise about it. Negativity is draining and constant complaints are irritating, therefore it is important to learn to encourage, celebrate and appreciate your partner more. Putting Everything Else First Everyone likes to feel special and when in a relationship, it should be a priority to make your partner feel special as often and as much as you can. Your partner should always be your first priority. Even if you have to deal with something else before your partner, be courteous and let your partner know either before or after you’ve taken care of whatever it is. Remember, no one likes to feel unimportant, including you. Forcing Your Partner to Conform To Your Ideals Remember, your partner is not your doppelganger. As much as you two might have a lot in common, you can’t have everything in common. Therefore, there are certain things you will allow your partner do or believe out of respect for who they are, to make them feel comfortable and to make them feel loved. It might not make you feel comfortable at all, but if it matters to them or they are unable to change it (no matter how hard they have tried), you don’t force them, you learn to accept and accommodate them that way. Being Unkind Be kind to your partner in your words, in your thoughts, in your actions and in your deeds. Be kind. Always ask yourself before you do or say something to your partner, ‘Is this kind?’, ‘Can he or she bear this without falling apart?’. Kindness is simply the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. Remember to be kind. source: http://www.opinions.ng/hurting-partner-killing-relationship/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
By Tony Ogunlowo In an attempt to raise much needed funds, the Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, has come up with the most ludicrous suggestions of all time : she plans to tax even beggars on their ‘earnings’. She made this perfectly clear at a news conference in Lagos recently. May I remind the Honourable Minister that ‘begging’ is not actually an occupation but rather a means to survive in times of harsh economic times. Nobody wants to go on the streets and beg for alms – for some it’s a necessity; the alms they receive from charitable people enables them to survive. Yes, there are some professional beggars but not all of them are. But if the minister is still intent on taxing beggars hopefully she hasn’t forgotten about also taxing armed robbers, cultists, kidnappers ( – ‘Evans’ didn’t pay any tax on the billions he earned from kidnapping!), drug smugglers, Yahoo yahoo boys etc. There’s a long list of people who earn a fortune in the ‘black economy’ and never pay a penny in tax. Some of these people earn more money than most honest people will ever see in a lifetime! And will she also be taxing any of the bribes or backhanders her fellow ministers and politicians periodically receive? And what about the Fulani herdsmen? They don’t pay any tax (- but who’s brave enough to ask them for it?) Surely there are many other ways to raise funds through taxing; the Finance Minister just needs to be a little bit more creative – and reasonable. For instance how about a tax on people who have big second homes? Or what about taxing a little bit extra on people who have private planes and yachts? It won’t hurt their bank balances! And what about all the religious organisations who hide under the façade of ‘non-profitable organisations’ ? I can name a few ‘fat-cat-non-profitable-ventures’ beggars (aka pastors!) who need taxing; they live bourgeois and opulent lifestyles financed by the charitable contributions of their church members. In reality they are just sophisticated beggars who prey on their vulnerable congregation. Bishop Oyedepo, for instance, can afford to pay a little more tax on his ‘non-profitable-ventures’ earnings. If this goes ahead it’ll be interesting to see how it will be implemented; will an army of ‘beggar’ tax collectors be employed to collect taxes? How will you determine what they will pay? Or how do you determine how much they earn from begging? How will you enforce such a law? Currently more than 97% of the population of Lagos state don’t pay any tax at all! Perhaps the real problem is how easy it is to avoid paying tax in Nigeria; you can bribe a tax official to give you a tax clearance certificate; you can operate off the grid, in a black market environment and the authorities will never know or you can simply refuse to pay a tax summons – who’s going to enforce it? To generate funds through taxation, which is vital for any nations’ growth, an adequate and fair system needs to be put in place. The taxation system needs to be transparent for all so that everyone pays the correct tax based on their income. Tax loopholes, like the so-called ‘non-profitable ventures’ need to be assessed properly or outlawed. Then there needs to be a system that will collect and enforce non-payment of such – if 97% of people in Lagos don’t pay tax and you can’t enforce it you have a problem. It’s all good and fair the minister is making plans to tax everybody but without a proper system in place she is just wasting her time. Surely there must be other ways or means of raising funds without having to resort to harassing the least fortunate members of society for their measly widow’s mite. source: http://www.opinions.ng/now-nigeria-planning-start-collecting-tax-beggars-whats-next/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Eating out is now a common practice for most people. So, it’s essential to know how to select the right place to eat. These tips will help you decide if you should eat at a restaurant or not when next you are eating out. The kitchen is about to close Buying food at a restaurant could be a terrible idea because you may be buying stale food. This is because they would have packed up and it is the leftovers that would be sold to you if you decide to eat there. The toilets are dirty This is very straightforward. If the restaurants have a toilet and it is very dirty, there is every possibility that the eatery does not take hygiene serious. The service is bad The customer is king. Every service provider including restaurants should know this. Therefore, they must do their utmost best to make them happy by providing quality services. If this is not the case, there is no need to go there. Dirty glasses all over After eating, the table should be cleared immediately. If not, it should be done minutes later. But if it takes hours to remove these plates to the extent that you have to inform them, look for another place to eat. It has terrible reviews Reviews can make or mar any business. So, before you choose a restaurant, check out the reviews they have garnered over time and this will help you decide if you should eat there or not. Hairs not covered, gloves not worn A rule that a hygienic restaurant must not joke with is covering hair and using gloves. If they do not use any of these, there is every likelihood you will find strands of hair in the food. This can be very annoying. source: http://www.opinions.ng/6-signs-not-eat-restaurant/ cc: lalsticlala mynd44

Lagos is a bustling state in the south western region of Nigeria. It’s a popular state in the country and widely known as the ‘city of hustlers’, the ‘city of action’ or more formally as the ‘center of excellence’. Lagos is the go-to state for a lot of Nigerians to make their lofty dreams come true, but as exciting as the state is, there are a couple of unusual things about it. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 unusual things about Lagos. The Rush to Board a Bus Especially during the early morning rush on most weekdays, the struggle of Lagosians to board a public bus is one usual thing that might be quite difficult to comprehend. The rush presents itself as a war-like scenario with people ready to engage in a fierce battle with one another for a coveted seat in the bus, regardless of the collateral damage. Some of these people don’t even mind risking their own lives or physical well being as they are quick to jump in front of moving buses in the process of the struggle. The Consequence of Change Scarcity Lagos is one of the few places, especially when boarding buses, that you have to be very mindful of the value of the currency you are carrying. You might have more than enough money to cover your transport expenses, but if the value is too high it can attract the same insult and aggression that not having enough money might attract. It is indeed strange. The best thing is to do what you can to have the exact currency value you need for your transport expenses or something relatively near it. The bus conductors that collect these transport fares can get unrealistically aggressive if that’s not the case. The Driving It seems most drivers that ply Lagos roads are auditioning for some kind of African Fast and Furious spin-off because their unreasonable, illogical and sometimes straight up dangerous approach to driving remains a marvel to many. There is a popular and widely believed saying that ‘once you can drive successfully in Lagos, you can drive anywhere’; and there is nothing closer to the truth than this saying. The Professional Beggars Lagos doesn’t have conventional beggars, there seems to be beggars of all types and forms roaming the Lagos streets. From the well-dressed phonetic speaking young man that will walk up to you with tales of being stranded, to the scruffy looking woman that frequents the same spot for over a year begging for a dying child on admission in the hospital, you’ll soon realize that Lagos has it all. Sometimes, it seems like these ‘professional’ beggars disregard the fact that God has graciously given us all common sense and we all can make use of this common sense to put two and two together and realize when certain things about their emotional and heart-wrenching tales don’t check out. The Law Enforcement Agents Well, the law enforcement agents are not actually the unusual ones but their attitudes most definitely are. Law enforcement agents readily board public vehicles without paying, turning a blind eye to the traffic rules broken by these drivers. On alighting from the bus a few moment later, the same law enforcement agents are seen zealously booking other public vehicle drivers for breaking the same traffic rules they just turned a blind eye to. The police, army, navy, air force, Man O War and LASTMA are all beneficiaries of this free transport. source: http://www.opinions.ng/5-unusual-things-lagos/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44
