Be prepared for interviews. If you are one of the tiny percentage of those that get to secure an interview, you owe it to yourself to be prepared. If you don’t know anything about the company inviting you, it could be embarrassing. Do your research. What value can you add? Look for problems to solve. Prepare questions that you wish to ask. There are literally thousands of people looking for work. What makes you unique? Try to remain positive. Yes, you have already sent your CV to 82 companies and interviewed with 18; some may not even acknowledge your CV; it’s nothing personal. They have so many to go through. Dust off the disappointments as quickly as you can and stay focused on the next opportunity. If you are down and dejected, it will show, and can make you appear unattractive. You need to be upbeat, enthusiastic and positive. Be flexible. Don’t be too fixated on getting your dream job. Be prepared to accept a role that may not necessarily meet your expectations when you consider your qualifications, expertise, or your experience. Part-time, or contract work are ways of getting you employed if you prove to be an outstanding resource. There are far too many people searching so if you are offered something that you can do well, accept it whilst you continue your search. Stay fit and healthy. Particularly if you are stressed or anxious, your health can be affected, so don’t neglect this most important aspect of your life. We all know that a healthy diet and exercise is good for the mind and body. You have the time now to give some focus to this so put a proper regime in place. It will put you in a much better frame of mind as well. What can you do to earn extra income? This is the time to look inwards at your skills, talents, those things that you do effortlessly but have never leveraged on or thought of monetising. Can you teach, can you bake, sew, take photographs? Do you find it easy to fix things? Are you an expert with social media? Many people are trying to bring a small business idea to life; can you assist with writing business plans? Reflect on this carefully and you will find that there is some solution that you can provide. People pay for solutions. Today’s high unemployment rates mean that more people than ever before are experiencing job loss, and for significant periods of time. Being unemployed is one of life’s most challenging events, but it can also come with opportunities if you are calm, proactive and able to seize the moment which may just be the impetus you need to follow that passion, that dream and bring it to life. http://www.jarushub.com/surviving-job-loss-helpful-tips/ cc: Lalasticlala & Mynd44

Nimi Akinkugbe In a recession, job losses are inevitable. As consumption and production fall, companies naturally have to stop hiring except for essential staffing needs. Many may also have to lay off staff with redundancies, which adds to an already alarming unemployment situation. It is a vicious cycle; as the numbers of those out of work increase and their income falls, consumer spending drops which in turn compels companies to cut back on production levels leading to even more job losses. Have you recently been laid off? Here are some unemployment survival tips that you may find useful. This is not the time to withdraw from your circles. Your network, including your immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues, former clients, and business contacts, matter now more than ever. Many people rely on word of mouth to find the right people, so be sure to tell everyone you know that you are on the market. Don’t wait till you are pushed. Many people in full time employment convince themselves that it won’t happen to them hoping they won’t be affected. However, if you know that it is inevitable that your company or industry is likely to lay off people and your appraisals have been of concern, it’s best to start the job search before you get the notice. Develop yourself. Are there some important skills that you need in order to improve your prospects? Do you have the skills to get to where you want to be? Now, don’t rush off to do the first Master’s or PHD programme that you get admission for; I mean practical skills that all companies need such as IT or digital marketing skills. Consider doing it now and you will be better equipped with a skill set for your next job. It is generally considered that volunteering can have a positive impact in the search for re-employment. It may not always lead to paid work, but it certainly does come with personal and social benefits. Volunteering will give you a sense of fulfilment. It can also enhance the personal skill set, introduce new knowledge; all this can help in the search for a permanent role. Can you consult? An employer may need your skill set but may just not be able to afford to hire you as a full-time employee. By offering your skills on a consultancy basis, you can stay connected to your network and still be well positioned for a more permanent position when things improve. Perfect your CV. There is nothing more exasperating for a prospective employer than to have the misfortune of reading a CV full of grammatical and typographical errors. Prepare your CV and proofread it very carefully; there are many good online samples and tips to guide you. Do not pretend to be what you are not; you will be caught out. |

3. Professional mannerisms Mannerisms are also important. The composure and behaviours demonstrated by people creates an impression in others’ minds. Two sayings come to mind: – First impressions count. – You are what you are perceived to be. Nigerian graduates need to develop their professional manners and attitudes at work. I have heard of a Big 4 secondee from Nigeria to the UK office using the phone to make private international calls to Nigeria and talking loudly in the office while doing it. The office is not your home and a place to play. Dress smart or appropriate for the culture, speak eloquently and professionally at all times, do your work to the highest standard within the constraints of the available resources to you and do not take the piss. 4. Adding value & justifying your pay One of the hidden weaknesses of majority of Nigerian graduates is the mentality. Many think they should be paid “plenty moni” in Ghana-must-go bags because of some qualifications they have gotten, or because they have heard of what some other guy is earning, without any thought about what value the can add to a company. Even when offered the job, they come to work every day and go through the paces without any evidence of adding extra-ordinary value and then think their pay needs to be upgraded periodically. If you cannot give NXm to someone who you cannot see a matching result of their work, why do you expect a shareholder to pay you an amount of money that you cannot justify you are more than worth? Graduates should be willing to start from, at least, a reasonable base and gain some more knowledge and skills in their career field. A reasonable base is an amount that is within the market rate and makes it worth your while to leave home (i.e. pay for transport, food, rent etc. and still have some disposable income). When you have learnt and can demonstrate you are one of the best in the market for your area of work, you can start dreaming of “plenty, plenty money”. http://www.jarushub.com/sagamite-unemployable-4-things-to-do-to-make-you-employable/ cc: Lalasticlala & Mynd44 |
One of the challenges that can be observed in the average Nigerian graduate is getting employed. This in part is because of the dearth of opportunities in the market, limited and turbulent economic activities that do not enable investors and management to be confident to invest in the business and staff on the long run, the lack of funds and a professional and structured entrepreneurship by graduates to provide themselves with employment, and the low quality of graduates in the market to employ, leading to some employers shipping in talent. Much can be said about each of these drivers but I will focus on how Nigerian graduates can transform themselves to being employable, i.e. an employment asset. The reality is that the Nigerian environment is a very poor environment for developing and nurturing the skills set and personalities required for the modern professional work environment. Only very few of the graduates are able to overcome this environmental restrictions on their personality outcomes. The few that achieve this do so based on their natural talent and/or their proficiency in seeking and finding the right kind of knowledge from other informal channels. This leaves companies with only a small pool of highly talented candidates to employ from and affects the quality of products and services remitted to their customers. It is pretty much very difficult to develop a high performance team in Nigeria. These environmental restrictions on development and nurturing the skills set and personalities required for the modern professional work environment also affects many Nigerian graduates that emigrate to the West. They end up struggling getting the good jobs they desire and which their paper qualifications suggest to them they ‘deserve’. For graduates that want to learn how to transform themselves from unemployable to employable asset, I will advocate self-development in the following competencies: 1. Knowledge and demonstration of high IQ It is essential any job-seeker strengthen their knowledge of their career line, the industries they want to work in, the types of companies they are applying to and the economy in general. Employable people will be people that can talk intelligently on key topics of their area. They will be able to back up their arguments with facts and logic instead of being the type that throw beer-parlour arguments. They will have an in-depth knowledge of some of the developments (especially cutting edge or disruptive innovations) that are pertinent to their career-line or the industry of interests, or at least (or as well as) knowing the basics of the work they want to do. The Nigerian education system will hardly help in achieving these. Graduates need to expand on their knowledge by exploiting the free and accessible resources around them. Be an ardent news reader/listener, read resources online, subscribe to industry/functional magazines and watch & qualify your utterances. Don’t make claims or arguments that makes you look like an idiot. Many Nigerian graduates do. When you read or listen to something think through it and synthesis the information. Ask the “why” and “how” questions and use this to acquire more knowledge. Another serious pointer that relates specifically to Nigerians is that, although you should feel free to have and practice your religion, but refrain from dogmatically stating your religious edicts are the “facts” in environments outside your religious circle. Religion and reason have many difference and gaps. Faith is not evidence of reasoned fact, so don’t use it as your demonstration of intellectual thinking. I strongly suggest you keep your religious logic to your Church/Mosque except you work for a religious organisation. Most work places are secular, logical and scientific. 2. Emotional intelligence Getting ahead in the modern work place requires evidence of EQ in addition to the evidence of IQ. Candidates need to show they are able to read others and work in a team with diverse people. Many Nigerian graduates have a poor mentality based on the environment they grew up in where their fundamental emotional attachment is at a very primitive level; founded on tribalism/religious groups/race/etc. Their thinking, support and sense of achievement are usually oddly tied to these primitive associations. Many are also very one-dimensional in thinking and can’t incorporate other’s ideas or consider how to win them over. There are a lot of materials on the net to help with developing the emotional intelligence, e.g. MBTI, Belbin Team roles, Learning Styles, Situational Leadership etc. |

https://www.afsauditing.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/home_tbcgroup-2.jpg Ed Mellett Many people are keen to work in business consulting, attracted by the high average salaries, interesting work and opportunities for progression. However, this makes the competition for the available jobs intense. Amongst a group of talented, well qualified individuals, how do you make yourself stand out? WHAT DO CONSULTANCIES LOOK FOR? Consultancies want to recruit the very best candidates. They have high standards and look for candidates who they can trust to deliver strong results from day one. They key attributes that you will need to possess to be successful are: Intelligence: You have to be bright to work in business consulting and consultancies will expect you to demonstrate the intellectual horsepower necessary for understanding complex situations and solving difficult problems. You will need prove this with a solid academic background and the ability to perform well on psychometric reasoning tests. Ability to work with people: Working within consultancies means you have to be able to work effectively with a wide range of people, both colleagues and clients. You will need to be able to work well within a team and build productive relationships quickly. Strong communication, a willingness to cooperate, and personal flexibility are key. Drive: Consultancy work is demanding and deadlines can be tight. Consultants often work long hours and undertake a lot of travel. To be successful you need to have the internal motivation and strength of mind to keep going, even when things get difficult. You will need to be tenacious and strive for high standards at all time. Confident and presentable: Consultants represent their organization and must therefore be presentable with excellent interpersonal skills. They must be comfortable managing relationships with senior leaders and be able to do so with confidence and poise. To be successful, consultants must be credible, and that comes down to how you present yourself and interact with others. Willingness to learn: Every day is different when you a consultant and the learning curve can be steep. You need to be willing to put the effort in to learning and understanding new concepts and contexts on a regular basis. An interest in business and your specific area of focus is essential. To break into business consulting you will need to be able to demonstrate that you have each of these qualities. You need to be able to prove that you have shown these qualities in the past, and present yourself in such a way that the impact you make supports these qualities. GETTING TO THE INTERVIEW There are a number of recognized routes into business consultancy, these can broadly be seen as graduate opportunities and joining as an experienced hire. Many consultancies offer graduate/undergraduate schemes and recruit directly from universities. Some have relationships with particular universities so it is worth finding out whether that is the case for your university. Graduate/undergraduate schemes are a great way of getting a foot in the door, acquiring some serious professional development, and securing opportunities for the future. The schemes tend to be well established and selection criteria and processes are fairly tough. Jobs are also routinely advertised at ‘Experienced Hire’ level and candidates with substantial work experience, who can demonstrate expertise in their particular field, can secure consultancy opportunities in this way. However, these are not the only way of finding and securing business consultancy opportunities. Candidates who are serious about breaking in to consultancy should also proactively use their networks to source opportunities. Reach out to individuals within your network who may be able to advocate on your behalf. Look for Alumni currently working within consultancy and ask their advice. Attend industry events and aim to speak with people working in the field. Never the afraid to ask for advice or introductions; remember, consultancies are looking for people with drive and initiative. Internships are another excellent way of breaking into the consultancy sector. Whilst not everyone is in the position to take up an internship (paid or otherwise), if you can it is likely to be a worthwhile investment in your future. The experience you will gain and the contacts you will make, will enable you to secure paid work more effectively in the future. Speculative applications are sometimes also successful. If this is a route you want to explore then you must have an impeccable CV and covering letter. It must demonstrate your skills and experience, and the examples you provide should align exactly with the requirements of the role. To be successful you will need to have some quantifiable evidence of success that clearly demonstrates how you would add value to the organization. Address the application to a specific person otherwise it is unlikely to be given much consideration. SUCCEEDING AT SELECTION STAGE Business consultancies have famously rigorous selection processes; this reflects their desire to select only the very best candidates. To be successful candidates must be able to perform at high levels in a number of different tests. Typically, this will involve: Psychometric ability testing (usually including numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning tests ) to assess your cognitive abilities Personality/motivational tests to determine your drive and organizational fit Interviews: The interviews are often challenging and candidates will be quizzed on why they want to work in business consultancy and why this consultancy in particular. It is imperative that you can answer this effectively. Also be prepared to answer questions around your strengths and weaknesses, and questions that test your ability to work things out. For example, questions like ‘how many cups of coffee do you think are drunk in Britain each day?” The interviewer does not expect you to know the answer, they want to see how you go about working it out. Presentations: A core part of the consultant role is being able to present information credibly, professionally and with impact, this is therefore often assessed during the selection process. Group exercises: Similarly, consultants must be able to work effectively with others and have strong interpersonal skills, this is therefore assessed using group exercises. Successful candidates must be able to work effectively within the team, show leadership whilst also ensuring that everyone in the group is heard, and effectively influence others. Case studies: Typically, candidates will also be asked to complete a challenging case study. This aims to mimic, as closely as possible, the day-to-day work of a consultant. You will typically be presented with a large volume of data and expected to make sense of it, showing analysis and insight, and arriving at logical and strategic conclusions. How to get a Job in McKinsey & Company: http://www.jarushub.com/company-review-mckinsey-and-company/ The company recently elected its Global Managing Partner. Here is our review: http://www.jarushub.com/meet-the-new-global-ceo-of-mckinsey/ |
SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE The honest and most effective means remains practising the different forms of online assessments as much as possible. Different companies use different forms of tests: GMAT, SHL, JobTestPrep or bespoke formats. Practising regularly helps with confidence and of course learning from each test experience. The aptitude tests do not seek to select the intelligent candidates; it moves the lucky, the informed, the strong-willed and cheats to the next stage. The next stage, usually Assessment Centres or interview panels, would likely test the fitness of candidates for the roles BUT the aptitude tests are sincerely just another plight for the average job-seeker in Nigeria. http://www.jarushub.com/how-nigerian-candidates-now-cheat-in-aptitude-tests/ Lalasticlala & Mynd44 |
By Austin Archibong Certainly, there would be downsides to having such a huge population as Nigeria is fortunate or unfortunate to have. However, the plights of entry-level graduate job seekers in Nigeria is not about to reduce. There are barriers after barriers, requirements after requirements, spec after spec, and many stages involved to get an interview invite and ultimately a job offer. AGE CAP KEEPS REDUCING It is pretty standard these days for organizations to ask for graduates aged 26 and below. Some have taken it a notch higher by requesting candidates aged 23 and below. The idea of seeking fresh graduates 0-12 or 0-24 months after NYSC did not yield as much fruit as ‘too much’ fall in that category. The unpredictable education system in Nigeria still churns out graduates deemed not young enough. With the large pool available in the market, the average asking age is reducing; 23 and below is the new fad! Even if the degree awarding institutions are considered: foreign-obtained degrees, private varsities, and graduates from top local schools and relevant course of study employed as a sorting tool, the pool of prospective candidates is still very large. Add age barrier: 26 and just a little more candidates are shaved off. If the ideal age is reduced, the pool significantly reduces. You have young, fresh, and dynamic candidates to choose from. Nevertheless, the pool is in its thousands if not hundreds of thousands. HOW CANDIDATES NOW BEAT THE TEST SYSTEM The use of aptitude tests, either an online one before a physical verification, or a physical computer based test, is now the sorting tool in the first and second stages of most recruitment. However, many desperate graduates are already seeking ways to gain an advantage. With aptitude tests being the new plight job-seekers have to overcome, they constantly seek ways to get any edge whatsoever. In recruitment processes involving initial online tests, it is not uncommon for jobseekers to get ‘experts’ to help them. The expert can be a bright candidate that has passed the test or an individual that applied with fake or bogus details for the purpose of helping such candidates. Recruitment processes that are known to employ online tests in the first or second stages would surely notice a lot of these phony resumes candidates use just so they write the test first before they use their main account. In some cases, candidates get their results from online test immediately or a day or two after while the recruitment process is ongoing, and the questions are very similar if not the same. Why should candidates apply with their real details at first, when they can get significant advantage in a process that would likely screen off 50 percent or more? Some candidates resort to switching off the data services of their devices to get extra minutes before switching it back on. In some test designs, this doesn’t work but in more cases than others, switching off data can get candidates to refresh or beat the system. Anyway, these would all be tried out using the bogus details. True, the verification test could pull these candidates out, but at least they have passed a stage. The truth is every advantage matters! The physical tests these days are poorly designed. The questions are randomly gathered without taking into consideration the type of candidates, the timing and the conditions of the tests. DRAGNET is the number one culprit in this case and unfortunately they handle the first stage recruitment for most top companies. It is not surprising that an average test score would be below 30 percent. The questions do not load completely sometimes, the diagrams – which are snipped from their pictorial sources – are not clear, the numerical questions have very close options (in decimal places) even when calculators are not to be used. The verbal section have long comprehension passages, requiring candidates to spend time on a question – that sometimes requires ticking two options per question – and the hints are definitely not obvious. The test conditions leave much to be desired. Candidates that write in the mornings are better off. Candidates that are slated for 12 pm are sometimes delayed for three to four hours. When they enter the test halls, they wait for it to be filled and setup – and this could take over an hour. It is not unusual to see candidates being woken up from sleep to start aptitude tests. There are even allegations that some candidates see likely questions or offer ‘something’ to be moved to the next stage. |
