The #RedArrows of the Royal Air Force #RAF #UK Aerobatic team put up a magnificent display at the iconic #DohaCorniche that thrilled residents to cheers and amazement which was followed by a high-profile flypast of a Qatar airways airbus A350 flying in formation with the red arrows.

"The 20-minute Red Arrows aerobatic display featured nine fast-jets, flying as close as six-feet apart at more than 400 miles per hour. The Red Arrows are known for flying their signature Diamond Nine shape formation.” One of the Red Arrows’ key roles is as national ambassadors, supporting UK trade, business, education and industry – most recently in conjunction with the GREAT Britain campaign.

"Flying British-built fast-jets, the Red Arrows are renowned as one of the world’s best, and most recognizable, display teams. The Red Arrows are regarded as a great British brand and often perform at major, national occasions. An example was at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London."

"The team has been displaying since 1965 – entertaining and enthralling hundreds of millions of people around the world. The Red Arrows have completed more than 4,800 displays, in 57 countries. 2017 is the team’s 53rd consecutive season."

AMG boss Tobias Moers is not the emotional type undecided . Ask him what it’s like to have the fastest, most powerful, most technically advanced road car ever to carry the fabled three-pointed star finally out in the open, he gives his trademark aw-shucks grin and a shrug and then says, simply:
“It’s more than exciting.”

AMG will build just 275 Project Ones, and all are sold, with about 50 coming to the U.S. In fact, as Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche pointed out at the car’s reveal in Frankfurt, the company could have sold more than three times that number, despite a price tag of–on current exchange rates–about $2.75 million.

The Project One of course features a hybrid powertrain derived from that used in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas grand prix racer that took British driver Lewis Hamilton to the 2015 Formula 1 World Driver’s Championship. The ultra-compact 1.6-liter V-6 internal combustion engine features the same block and cylinder heads as the F1 car, but the pistons and crankshaft have been changed to lower the compression ratio so the engine can meet emissions regulations. And while the original race V-6 would rev to a dizzying 13,500 rpm, Project One’s version is limited to 11,000 rpm. Idle speed has also been brought down to 1,000-1,200 rpm, instead of the race car’s 3,800-4,000 rpm.

The massive single turbocharger is identical in layout to that used in the Mercedes F1 car. The exhaust turbine is located at the rear of the block, and connected to the compressor, which is located at the front of the block, by a shaft that runs through the vee of the engine. A 107-hp electric motor mounted concentrically on the shaft (called the MGU-H, for motor generator unit – heat) is used to keep the turbo spinning at all times, and to harvest excess energy generated by the exhaust and feed it into the battery pack.

Mercedes-AMG development engineer Jan Feustal says the system means the engine has the response of a naturally aspirated V-8, despite the size of the turbocharger. Not all that 107 hp is used to spin the turbo–the motor’s power rating is also a measure of the amount of energy it is able to recover. “It could be smaller if it was to just to rev the turbo,” says Moers.

The second electric motor, mounted low on the engine and called the MGU-K (motor generator unit – kinetic), develops 161 hp and is connected directly to the crankshaft, where it performs the same task as in the F1 racers, delivering a power boost when needed. In an F1 Mercedes that power is only available for a short period. In the Mercedes-AMG Project One, however, extra power will be available for longer, and over a wider range of operating parameters.

Key to that capability is an 800-volt battery pack with four times the capacity as the one in the Formula 1 car. Capacity apart, the battery pack is otherwise identical to that used on the track, right down to chemistry, cooling, the way the cells are arranged, and the connectors. “You don’t want to know what it costs,” laughs Moers.

The extra battery capacity is also used to power the 161-hp motors connected to each of the front wheels. With 322 hp of electric power at the front wheels, Project One will also be able to be driven with the V-6 internal combustion engine shut down. Pure EV operating range is not great–about 15 miles–but the Project One is not designed to be a daily commuter. However, it will be a daily driver, Moers insists. Unlike Bugatti there’ll be no special key required for owners to access the car’s full performance.

Daimler design chief Gorden Wagner says the Project One was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “It doesn’t happen very often that a company decides to put a F1 powertrain into a street-legal car,” he says. “I have designed many cars for Mercedes, cars that write history. But Project One goes beyond that. This is really something special, something that will be special 50 years from now.”

Wagner says Project One’s overall design theme, which features simple, clean surfaces, and a shoulder lower than the wheels, was inspired by the AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept designed for the sixth generation of the iconic racing game and unveiled in 2013. “That was the master mindmap for this car,” he says.

Tobias Moers says the Project One driven on stage at Frankfurt by Lewis Hamilton is the first complete car built so far, and full testing will commence by the end of this year.

The redesigned 2018 Camry is having its moment in the spotlight, grin but there’s another Toyota waiting for its turn, ready to snag attention and the automaker’s overall sales title. The Camry has been Toyota’s best-selling vehicle for over a decade, but the RAV4 passed the sedan in sales for the first half of 2017, and the crossover could claim the sales title for 2017 and beyond. Considering the new 2018 Camry—a car we called a “brazen, bold effort” after driving it—we’re looking forward to what the automaker has planned for the upcoming, next-generation RAV4. Before the 2019 Toyota RAV4 makes its debut, here’s what the crossover could offer.

More Power
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 will probably be powered by a more powerful four-cylinder engine shocked but without a turbocharger. cry Toyota has resisted the turbo-four trend we’ve seen all across the industry, and in the Camry, a base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine produces 203-206 hp and 184-186 lb-ft of torque. The current RAV4 produces 176 hp and 172 lb-ft from its 2.5-liter I-4 that’s mated to a six-speed automatic; expect more power and an eight-speed transmission on the 2019 RAV4.

With an increase in power closer to what the 2018 Camry offers, the next RAV4 could be a little quicker. We’ve tested a front-drive 2017 model hitting 60 mph in 9.3 seconds and an all-wheel-drive 2016 model reaching 60 in 8.7 seconds. Those aren’t bad times for a sensible crossover, but consider that an all-wheel-drive 2017 Honda CR-V with a 1.5-liter turbo-four will get to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and is still one of the more efficient options in that popular segment.

Return of the Hybrid
Will we see the return of a six-cylinder RAV4? Don’t count on it. Aside from a base four-cylinder model, a 2019 Toyota RAV4 hybrid model is likely to return, to fight the Rogue hybrid and the introduction of a CR-V hybrid that’s been rumored to be coming to the U.S. soon (it goes on sale in China later this year).

Better fuel Economy all round
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 will be more efficient, and we’re guessing it’ll perform well in our real-world-oriented Real MPG tests, too. The 2017 RAV4 is EPA-rated at 23/29-30 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive and 22/28 mpg with all-wheel drive. The hybrid currently only comes with all-wheel drive and is rated at 34/30 mpg. In Real MPG tests, a RAV4 Hybrid had no problem exceeding its EPA highway figure, and an all-wheel-drive non-hybrid RAV4 turned in Real MPG numbers slightly above its EPA numbers, too.

The 2018 Toyota Camry with a four-cylinder engine is EPA-rated at 28/39 mpg in the higher-volume trims and, for the new RAV4, we expect an improvement from its 2017 EPA numbers.

The (TRD) Sport Variant
Before the current-generation RAV4 says goodbye, the 2018 model introduces a new trim level. The 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure (shown here) combines a few visual upgrades with a Top Prep package for a combination that’s different from other RAV4s but not by much. As Toyota continues to rally a specially prepped version of the RAV4 and increases the reach of its TRD subbrand, the next-generation RAV4 could see the introduction of a RAV4 TRD Sport trim or simply another RAV4 Adventure model.

Room for Everyone
One of the current RAV4’s best features is how much room the crossover offers for people and cargo. Open up the lift gate, and you might be surprised by just how much space the RAV4 offers. We hope the 2019 RAV4’s switch to a new TNGA architecture won’t significantly change that. Toyotas have often been good about keeping the drive train hump in the back seat to a minimum, which enhances the impression of spaciousness, and we don’t expect that to change on the new model.

When we drove the 2018 Camry (which moved to the TNGA architecture), we said it felt “big, open, and airy” despite having fractionally less rear legroom and shoulder room.

A More Platinum Experience
Those who have a RAV4 might notice the loaded RAV4 Platinum models when they roll down the street with their monochromatic paint scheme replacing the contrasting black styling elements on most other RAV4s. Aside from a more polarizing design, the 2019 RAV4 will also offer a more premium experience for those who want the Platinum trim. In addition to rear-seat vents, the new RAV4 Platinum—if that trim survives to the new generation—will likely include features from the 2018 Camry’s options list such as a panoramic glass roof, a color head-up display, and rear cross-traffic braking. The current RAV4 already offers LED headlights, a full suite of active safety tech, and a multicamera parking system. No matter the trim, we think the RAV4’s functional interior will benefit from a freshened design on the next-gen model.

The Next Rav4 should drive better
Although the 2018 Camry doesn’t magically feel like a rear-drive sports car on the road, we still felt that the new midsize sedan was much improved, dynamically. The same should be true for the RAV4, though the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V set the bar high with driving performance.

The Frankfurt Motor Show (#IAA2017) starts on Tuesday. Frankfurt is Germany's most important automotive event and is a critical time for the home teams – BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Porsche and Audi.

New models and outrageous concept cars are what most people crowd into a European motor show for, but this year's event will no doubt be relatively subdued – Germany's biggest car makers, the lifeblood of the country's economy, are under scrutiny for their role in the ongoing Diesel gate emissions scandal. What's more, the world is turning its back on their favourite fuel.
The event for passenger cars takes place in Messe Frankfurt, an exhibition centre with several centuries of history as a trade fair venue, on odd years. Even years see the event move to Hanover, where the focus is on commercial vehicles. It tends to attract around a quarter of a million visitors.

Some fantastic vehicles were introduced at the 2015 event – the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Jaguar F-Pace, the Suzuki Baleno and the Bentley Bentayga, to name a few. Below are the most interesting cars expected to be revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

British brands at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017

The UK has a strong entry list into this year's Frankfurt show, especially considering how many brands seem to be absent. We're excited for two long-awaited Jaguar models, the E-Pace SUV (destined to beat the F-Pace as Jag's most popular car ever) and potentially a production version of the I-Pace, Jag's first electric car. The latter is expected to go on sale in 2018.

Sister company Land Rover will be displaying the Discovery SVX from its Special Vehicles Operation (SVO) team. We have already seen the SVR (high performance) and SVA (bespoke interior customisation) models, so it is likely that the X will focus on the company's renowned off-road expertise. Or not – we'll all find out for certain when it is revealed next Tuesday.

Bentley will also be at Frankfurt 2017. It will unveil the brand new Continental GT, a successor to the brand's most popular car and (arguably) the model that turned the company's fortunes around. We're anticipating a hybrid version, as well as unparalleled levels of high-end British luxury in what should (on paper at least) be the definitive grand tourer.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Grandland X, a new SUV from Vauxhall. Based on architecture from Vauxhall's new French owner Peugeot, the Grandland X will be a large family car to rival the Nissan Qashqai, Seat Ateca, Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008 and many, many more. This car will need to be excellent in order to compete in such a crowded marketplace.

There'll be a souped-up 'Sig, too. The Vauxhall Insignia GSi will come equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 256bhp. That really makes it warm rather than hot, and a long way short of the lairiness of previous VXR-badged cars, but it's still exciting to see Vauxhall give a nod to performance.

In contrast, plucky German-owned British underdog Mini will be bringing an all-electric Cooper to Frankfurt. It'll closely resemble the production model scheduled to hit the road in 2019, and will borrow bits and pieces from BMW's lovely i3.

Japanese brands at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017

When was the last time you thought about Subaru? This cult Japanese manufacturer has been known in the UK for its over-engineered, go-anywhere, invincible all-wheel-drive estate cars, but seems to have fallen by the wayside over the past couple of years. But this year's Frankfurt Motor Show sees the reintroduction of an Impreza to European shores.

One of Britain's favourite brands is Honda, which builds its Civic hot hatch in Swindon. This year they'll be launching a hybrid version of their CR-V family SUV, as well as a facelifted Jazz hatchback. The Japanese version of the Jazz, which was unveiled a while ago, has more aggressive styling (in line with the Civic) as well as a hybrid powertrain. It also has a new, 1.5-litre petrol engine with 128bhp.

The brilliant Suzuki Swift gets its anticipated Sport upgrade. The 'old' Swift Sport was one of our favourite cars, offering unparalleled fun-per-pound in a tiny package, so we're prepared for its replacement to become a new 'warm hatch' benchmark.
Korean brands at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017

Possibly the most properly exciting car being launched at Frankfurt will be the Hyundai i30N. This is the first real attempt at a hot hatch from the good-value Korean brand, and with 271bhp and rather fetching exterior design, we can't wait to get behind the wheel.

Less exciting but sadly more important will be Hyundai's other major launch, the Kona. It's a small SUV destined to take on the litany of similar vehicles, and Hyundai knows its late to this particular party – hence the jacked-up look and plastic cladding. The Kona arrives in the UK in November.

Kia is Hyundai's BFF, and the Kia Stonic is the Kona's closest relative. Despite the familial bond these two cars are rivals, each with their own distinct aesthetic. Like the Kona, the Stonic will be a keenly-priced new arrival in the crowded family SUV segment, and while we haven't seen it in the metal yet, photographs suggest it's rather attractive.

German brands at the Frankfurt Motor Show

The 400km autobahn journey from Munich to Frankfurt is a rather short one in the new 600bhp BMW M5. That's set to be one of the home-game highlights for this year's show – an overpowered, all-wheel-drive supersaloon from Beemer's in-house tuning division.

There'll also be some BMW SUVs making the same journey. The new X3 looks basically the same as the old one, save for some sculptural flourishes at the front end, and is set to continue to offer an attractive package at the premium end of the family SUV segment.

As well as the X3 production car, BMW will be unveiling a fresh SUV concept – the X7, possibly its biggest car yet. It'll have seven seats and probably a hybrid powertrain, which will make it popular, but the spy shots we've seen suggest it looks a little bit slab-sided an inelegant.

Talking of which, the 6-Series GT will be making an appearance. It's one of BMW's more graceless designs (in our opinion) but its hard to deny the practicality of a 610-litre boot, some inefficient six-cylinder engines and a £50k price tag, right?

Probably the most conventionally desirable car on BMW's stand this year will be the i8 Roadster. That's precisely what you think it is – a soft-top version of the i8 hybrid supercar. Just what Frankfurt needs to see more of in the wake of the emissions scandal.

Which brings us neatly onto Volkswagen, the brand at the centre of the Diesel gate controversy. We're interested in the new Polo, based on the VW Group's modular MQB platform and similar to the brilliant new Seat Ibiza. This will also be available with a GTI badge.

And guess what – more crossovers ahoy. The T-Roc might have one of the most awkward names of this year's Frankfurt show, but it fills one of the narrow gaps between models in Volkswagen's line-up. Think Tiguan crossed with Audi Q2 – and we'll be driving it in the next few months.

Audi, meanwhile, will be demonstrating its commitment to technology with an all-bells-and-whistles new A8. That's the brand's luxury saloon, which has long been at the forefront of motoring tech. This year, it arrives with what Audi claims is the first production deployment of Level 3 autonomy. This is a proper luxo-barge (expect prices to start at around £100,000) and the kind of car from which technology trickles down.

We suspect Mercedes-Benz will try to cover the full automotive spectrum at Messe Frankfurt. The over-the-top hybrid powertrain of their new bonkers hypercar has already been revealed, so we anticipate the full-fat debut to take place at the show.

At the opposite end of the spectrum will be some all-electric concept cars under the 'EQ' sub-brand. In terms of tech, there'll be some wireless charging, but we can also expect more phrases like "muscular-purist proportions". The 'new' G-Class will probably make the journey from Stuttgart to Frankfurt, too, though to the untrained eye we doubt there'll be any notable styling changes to this boxy cult classic.

Also look out for the revised S-class Coupe and Cabriolet.

Porsche will unveil its third-generation Cayenne, which with hindsight represented a momentous shift in direction when it first arrived back in 2002. The smoother, sleeker and, crucially, lighter large SUV will cost from £55,965 for the base model, which has a 335bhp, 3.0-litre V6 with a single turbocharger. The £68,330 Cayenne S has a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 with 434bhp.

Other European brands at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Ferrari will be unveiling the Portofino convertible, its new entry-level car that replaces the California. Its 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine (based on that of the outgoing California T) will launch you to 62mph in 3.5 seconds and Ferrari claims "at least 199mph". Also as with the California, the Portofino has a retractable hardtop that's likely to make it one of the most practical drop-top supercars ever produced.

One of the most interesting new crossovers is the Arona from SEAT. The Spanish brand has been a lucky escapee from most of the Dieselgate fallout, and remains the stylish, youthful member of VW's trifecta. If the Arona is as good as the new Ibiza on which it's based, we'll be delighted.

Renault will be introducing its new hot hatch, the Megane RS. We're hoping it'll strike a neat compromise between comfort and excitement, with around 300bhp and (no doubt) an impressive lap time around the Nurburgring.

Renault is also promising a concept that "expresses Renault’s vision of autonomous, electric and connected mobility in 2030. The concept has been developed in conjunction with several technology firms to show how harmoniously the car will work and interact with its environment, including connecting with the home and a smartphone".

The Dacia Duster has been a success in the UK, popular with buyers who love its low price and high driving position, and who are happy to sacrifice some refinement (and crash safety) in exchange for a bargain. The 2018 model, which is set to debut at Frankfurt, will be a little bigger than the outgoing one, but we don't expect the £10,000 starting price to grow.

What are you most excited to see? Let us know in the comments below.

The 2018 Ramona-Benz S650 Maybach has a certain ring to it, don’t you think? If not for the order of four names on the birth certificate of a baby girl born in 1889 — Mercedes Adrienne Ramona Manuela Jellinek — it could very well be so. The Mercedes-Benz brand has come an infinitely long way from the heady, 19th century roots of Mercedes Jellinek and her father Emil. Mercedes has come a long way, even, from the introduction of the first car to inspire the S-Class in 1954, the W180 “Ponton” sedan. Now, some 45 years since the introduction of the W116, the first car to be officially designated an S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is rolling out the latest version of what has become a time-tested benchmark of the luxury full-size sedan segment — the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Replete with all the semi-robotic functions you’d expect in a 21st Century gadget of six-figure proportions, the 2018 S-Class doesn’t disappoint, despite not being all that visually distinguishable from the 2014-2017 model it’s replacing, particularly inside. That visual similarity isn’t a bad thing; the S-Class was already a very handsome vehicle. Other than a new V-12-style grille, new lights all around, gently massaged front and rear bumpers and a few other minor updates, the sheetmetal remains unchanged.

But Mercedes’ engineers didn’t just phone this one in. They just spent their efforts elsewhere: on a whole new line of engines and transmissions; on a new 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system; and on enhanced technology on all fronts from self-driving to entertainment, and even into new frontiers of “well-being.”

An entirely new slate of engines and transmissions means there’s a bit of model-name mix-up coming for the 2018 models: the S560 replaces the S550, the Mercedes-Maybach S560 and S650 now sit atop the range in place of the S600, and the S63 and S65 carry forward, changed but with their names intact. A new S450 model will also join the range at launch. For the U.S., that launch happens in fall of 2017 for most models, though the rear-drive S560, the S65 sedan, and the Mercedes-Maybach S650 rear-wheel-drive won’t arrive until “late 2017.”

The S450 gets the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 we’ve seen in several other applications from the brand (rated here at 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque), while its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 finds its home in the S560 as well as the S63 after some AMG fettling. In S560 trim (both standard and Maybach), the 4.0-liter turns out 463 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, a gain of 14 hp over the previous 4.7-liter twin-turbo. The S63 gets an even bigger bump, gaining 26 hp over the old twin-turbo 5.5-liter for a rating of 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque.

Behind the wheel, the power differences of the newer engines aren’t really all that palpable. The car’s all-new 9-speed automatic transmission, however, helps the updated 2018 S-Class feel a bit smoother and quicker, thanks to its close ratios and slick, easy shifts. No doubt the new 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system plays a role in making the car feel quicker off the line, too — but more on those in a second.

The biggest news in the S-Class engine world isn’t news at all for the United States. A new S500 model is being launched in Europe and elsewhere in the world, powered by an all-new M256 engine sporting a cutting edge 48-volt electrical system that allows it to combine mild hybrid functions with starter-generator functions through a sandwiched electrical drive unit. This, in turn, allows Mercedes to convert all of the external accessories from their archaic belt-drive to more efficient, and more controllable, electric-driven accessories. Getting rid of the accessories on the front of the engine also decreases its length, making it easier to package the M256’s inline six-cylinder layout. Electric-drive accessories on the M256 include the engine’s water pump and the air conditioning compressor, but also an electric supercharger that fills the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder’s torque gaps. The result? A more efficient, smarter engine that’s capable of 429 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque in S500 trim. Those figures net the M256-powered S500 a 0 to 60 mph time of roughly 4.7 seconds. Unfortunately, we won’t get this powertrain in America — or at least there are no plans for it as yet.

The aforementioned 9-speed automatic transmission lies at the heart of every 2018 S-Class with the exception of the V-12s, which soldier on with the high-torque handling 7-speed MCT. For the non-AMG models, that means a 9G-Tronic with paddle shifters. The new transmission offers a wider spread of available gear ratios for more efficient cruising at speed. For the S63, the upgrade to 9 speeds means an AMG Speedshift MCT transmission with multiple downshift capability and a rev-matching feature that uses a single wet clutch in place of the torque converter.

Both variations of the 9-speed are crisp and responsive (noticeably more so in manual and sport modes) without acting balky or awkward at lower speeds. It’s not the sort of transmission to get a gearhead’s veins flowing with lube, but it is the transparently smooth sort of power delivery device you’d expect and want in an S-Class. That’s not to say the S-Class is sleepy; even the base V-6-powered S450 scampers to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds (4.8 with 4MATIC); the S560 manages the run in 4.5 seconds. The Maybachs are a touch slower, checking in at 4.8 seconds (S560 Maybach 4MATIC), and 4.6 seconds (S650 Maybach). The mighty, hulking S65 requires just 4.2 seconds to hit 60 mph.

Also new for the S63 AMG is the automaker’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. Instead of the fixed-ratio setup AMG cars were once known for, this version now implements infinitely variable front-rear power distribution for the 2018 model year. This is made possible by an electromagnetic clutch, which constantly adapts to road conditions and driver behavior, functioning as a rear-drive car when grip is good, but adding progressively more torque to the front axle as needed. In practice, the 4MATIC+ system, like the new 9-speed AMG Speedshift MCT, is exactly as it should be: very good, and seamlessly transparent. Thanks to the combination of new engine, transmission, and 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive, the new S63 shaves 0.5 seconds from its 0 to 60 mph time, now doing the deed in just 3.4 ticks of the stopwatch.

When the W222 S-Class debuted for the 2014 model year, it brought with it a huge innovation: Magic Body Control, which allowed the car to scan the road ahead and pre-adjust to upcoming road imperfections. Not only was it innovative, it’s truly effective, too. Now, it’s been enhanced, with even better bump-mitigation performance, but also with “curve-tilting” built in. That means it can make your S-Class very nearly lean into the corners — even though the standard air-ride S-Class handles the corners with minimal body roll. The upgraded Magic Body Control with curve-tilt is standard on S65 models, and an optional upgrade on all rear-drive S-Class variants.
It’s not the only driver assistance package that’s been upgraded for the 2018 model year. Improved camera and radar systems enhance the raw data being pumped into the car’s brain, allowing it to see further than before, while richer map and navigation data help the car automatically adjust its speed for curves and speed limits when using the Active Distance Assist Distronic feature. The 2018 S-Class will also do an automated lane change, brake to a stop in an emergency, and even find a parking space and then park in it. The semi-autonomous self-driving system alerts the driver to return their hands to the wheel after 15 seconds, and abandons control of the car entirely when no human input is detected for 1 minute. It’s still just a driver assistance system, rather than a true semi-autonomous highway driving feature, but it’s as good at the parts of the job it does as anything else on the market. We did notice it had trouble keeping a lock on the lane when the road’s markings are faded or substantially outside the normal range. That said, when the 2018 S-Class is doing the steering for you, it’s perceptibly smoother and even more confidence inspiring than in the previous model.

One of the most curious offerings of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the optional Energizing Comfort package. This system could be thought of the Distronic Plus of vehicle cabin comfort systems, pulling together several previously independent systems to create a more holistic result. The only difference is that instead of integrating steering and ABS and throttle position and more, the Energizing Comfort system is integrating climate control, ambient lighting, massage, and fragrance to “configure a specific wellness setup to suit their current mood or needs, enhancing physical comfort and performance on the road,” per Mercedes-Benz.

Not that you’ll need too much digital cossetting to complement the analog comfort of the S-Class’s cabin. Real leather, metal, and wood abound, and even the plastic surfaces and buttons in the cabin are, with the exception of the controls mounted near the headliner, of top-notch make. The seats, already among the most comfortable and spacious in the industry, are as good as ever, ready for your longest drive.

All of this shows how far Mercedes-Benz has come since just 2014, let alone over the 45-year run of the S-Class, or the 63-year run of its predecessors. Not to mention the 131 years of car-building experience since Dr. Benz’s Patent Motorwagen in 1886. It’s enough to make you wonder what Mercedes-Benz will be up to in another four years —let alone in another 20, 50, or 100. Whatever it is, if it’s anything like the new 2018 S-Class, it’ll be pushing the boundaries of technology, breaking new ground in the human element of luxury, and continuing to set a benchmark that measures one of the longest-running traditions of excellence in any industry.
