Ex-Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff today denied allegations him that he is one of the main sponsors of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram. Former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff during the press conference in Abuja today Sahara Reporters Media Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Sheriff threatened to sue Stephen Davies, the Australian negotiator who recently claimed that the militants named him as one of their sponsors. He also expressed preparedness to face any panel in the world to clear his name. “I have no association with any terrorists anywhere,” he declared. “I have never met the group. I cannot be a sponsor of a group I have not met before. I don't have foot soldiers, as they alleged.” The former governor described the allegations against him as unfair, saying they are being peddled for political reasons, and pointing out that he has suffered from the sect’s activities and was at a time even targeted for elimination. “My name has been mentioned for political reasons over the attacks of Boko Haram. I have been accused unfairly in connection with Boko Haram since I left office,” he said. http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/03/modu-sheriff-explodes-i-don%E2%80%99t-know-boko-haram-how-can-i-sponsor-them “For the records, let me state categorically that I do not share the same ideology with Boko Haram,” he declared, adding that by his nature he is opposed to the philosophy of the militants “It is instructive to point out that I have been one of the greatest victims of Borno. I was a target of Boko Haram during my time because I refused to abdicate my responsibility”. Sheriff recalled that his younger brother, Alhaji Goni, was killed by Boko Haram, as have some of his friends and associates. “For the records, the late leader of Boko Haram, Mohammed Yusuf, once named me, Umaru Yar’Adua and some other leaders as targets. He boasted he would deal with all of us,” Sheriff continued. He recalled that he even banned Boko Haram and outlawed the group but that the sect later changed its name and continued to wreak havoc. “Those linking me with the sect are either ignorant or completely out for mischief. The sect has become captive of political forces and used for settling political scores.” The former governor also dismissed the allegation that some foot soldiers who turned against me became Boko Haram, noting that there are now ten thousand members of Boko Haram terrorising the people. He stressed that all of his actions as governor were to guide his people right. “The fact that one of my commissioners, Buji Koi was named as member of the group does not make me a member. It doesn't make sense. I leave the rest for Nigerians to judge whether it is a crime to do good to all men.” |
The authorities must take more than cursory interest to contain this economic haemorrhage A recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report that the United States government might have launched investigation into crude oil shipments from Saltpond platform, an oil facility off the coast of Ghana, should worry the Nigerian authorities. The platform, according to the report, has been shipping large quantities of crude oil from unknown sources to Europe and was uncovered in the course of a broader enquiry into how Nigeria’s crude oil is being stolen and exported by local and international syndicates. In the WSJ report, a Saltpond official was said to have testified that the crude oil was procured from some Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials who had seized it from suspected oil thieves. In debunking the allegation, EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said the commission “is not an oil marketing company and could not have issued any invoice to any oil trader to lift confiscated crude oil from Nigeria. The issue of oil theft in Nigeria has assumed a frightening dimension over the years and this is not only to our government, but to civil society in Nigeria and we welcome the United States investigations into the crude oil shipments from Saltpond allegedly by oil thieves." While we join EFCC in welcoming the investigation to unravel the mystery behind the crime against our nation for which there seems to be no antidote, we hasten to reiterate our oft-repeated position that the stealing of our crude oil involves local and international criminal cartels and some form of official complicity. It is therefore for that reason that we enjoin the Nigerian authorities to take interest in the US investigations into the issue that impinges not only on our economy but also on our national security. Only two weeks ago, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State spoke about the scale, not only of oil theft in our country but the seeming complicity of those who are supposed to be responsible for bringing culprits to book. Said Oshimohole while receiving in audience the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ade Abolurin: “I am told that a lot of vessels are seized in the course of tracking these characters whether at sea or around the riverine areas or in the creek…In the cause of these, one thing leads to another; either they are able to manipulate the system and you have interventions from some quarters and you are asked to let the people go or that they succeed in turning round to again recover what is taken from them.” While it is noteworthy that the international community is paying attention to the monumental loss of Nigeria’s prime asset, it would appear that the local authorities seem to have given up on any serious attempts to rein in the criminal gangs. Yet there can be no solution until Nigerians themselves resolve to fight the menace. Last year, the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) disclosed that the nation lost over 136 million barrels of crude oil estimated at $10.9 billion through pilfering and sabotage between 2009 and 2011. This was one of the findings in the audit report of operations in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, which covered the period under review. As we have consistently argued on this page, while oil theft poses great danger to our economy and our security, it is also evident that the problem persists because there is some form of official complicity in what has become an organised crime. Aside the loss of enormous revenues, the security implications of these criminal activities are better imagined against the background that a huge chunk of the proceeds are used to buy arms. It is therefore time that the authorities take serious interest in unmasking who these criminals are, checkmating them and bringing them to book. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/who-are-the-oil-thieves |
Less than 24-hours after John Oyegun accused the PDP and its leadership ofknowing the sponsors ofBoko Haram, the PDP has condemned the APC leader’s accusation, saying the statement is completely lacking in validity, character and intellectual content befitting ofa National Chairman of a political party. The PDP, in a press statement released on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said that Mr Oyegun has succeeded in furtherexposing the desperation ofthe APC to launder its image through renewed propaganda and blackmail. The PDP furthersaid “Nigerians have since noted the pattern and timing ofviolent attacks against our people which betray a trend tailored against the PDP and the Federal Government and provide impetus for the APC to find a voice and thrive. “They know that it has become a recurring decimal that whenever the PDP or the Federal Government records or is about to record a major milestone, insurgents launch attacks on the people” The PDP, however, advised the APC to be nationalistic in its dealings and shun statements ofdivisive tendencies. The All Progressives Congress, APC, had, on Tuesday, challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to act decisively and hand two alleged sponsors ofthe Boko Haram group to the International Criminal Court (ICC), The Hague, for investigation and prosecution. The party said that a foreign negotiator engaged by the Federal Government had revealed that a former governor and a retired General were sponsors ofthe Boko Haram sect. Chairman ofthe party, John Oyegun, who made the disclosure, insisted that the APC was not behind the Boko Haram sect and demanded that the Federal Government should act immediately to end the growing insecurity in the North-East. Mr Oyegun, who was speaking during a press conference in Abuja, furthernoted that “Boko Haram sponsors have been exposed. They are within the ruling PDP. They are friends ofPresident Jonathan. He cannot pretend not to know who they are and what they have done and are still doing.” www.channelstv.com/pdp-replies-apc-boko-haram-sponsorship |

ordinarily would not have responded to Tom Ikimi's lengthy chronicle of falsehoods, cheap blackmail and abuse. My only reason forthis response is that I know Tom Ikimi's style. He subscribes to the view that no matter how unbelievable a lie may sound if you brazenly assert it and repeat it often enough you may persuade many that it is in fact true. I have seen Ikimi perpetrate this deviousness in his years in public life. Bola Tinubu 1. Regarding Ikimi's bid for the Chairmanship of the Party. It was clear to practically everyone who had the interest of the party at heart that we simply could not have a man of Tom Ikimi's antecedents as Chair of the party. As chairman of the NRC, one of the only two political parties in the country under the military transition programme, Tom Ikimi not only connived with the then military regime to annul the elections, terminate the democratic process and sell off his party. He became Abacha's foreign minister, convincing the world that heinous state murders like the hanging of KenSaro Wiwa were just acts! If Ikimi were the Chair of APC the party would have to sleep with both eyes open lest its chairman sell off the partybefore day break .No matter what anyone may say about me it is unlikely that I can be accused of supporting incompetent or morally light-weight individuals for important political positions. My philosophy is to put the best forward, men and women of competence and integrity, who can stand up to us politicians to challenge us and say no when necessary. Such people are not noisy or able to gain attention by being loud, I believe my role is to do all I can to project them. Who in their right mind would compare the highly principled Chief Bisi Akande, or Chief Oyegun with a Tom Ikimi? Either of these two men are known fortheir no-nonsense styles, not once in their careers would you hear that they betrayed a cause or were anybody's stooge. 2. Ikimi also concocts a story of a meeting he claims I had with Deziani on the Oando/ ConocoPhillips transaction on the eve of the APC Convention. Only a Tom Ikimi can come up with the absurd falsehood that on the eve of the APC Convention when I was in crucial meetings practically round the clock I was meeting with the Minister for Petroleum! What exactly would have been the point of such a meeting especially on the eve of the Convention? Was it to prevent Tom Ikimi from emerging as Chairman of the APC? To what end? Of what value would it be to anyone except Ikimi himself? Besides if this was so why he is back to the same party that purportedly planned his down fall? What is the Oando/ConocoPhillips transaction anyway? For those who do not know this is a private sale of the assets of ConocoPhillips to Oando. It was not patronage of any kind from the Federal government. The Federal government's involvement was merely to formally consent to the sale. I was not involved and I have never been involved in any of Oando's transactions. Typically he plays on the fact that Wale Tinubu of Oando is my nephew. Oando has been thoroughly investigated by South African and British authorities in the past 5 years as part of the process of listing the company on the stock exchanges of those countries. Those rigorous and comprehensive investigations conducted by the governments and risk control investigators are to discover the actual ownership of shares in the company. Politically exposed persons like myself are prime targets forthose investigations. All these investigations have shown that I have no investments in Oando. My public position on the entire transaction is that if an indigenous Nigerian oil and gas entity run by young serious minded Nigerians raise money transparently in the international capital markets to purchase private assets of a multi-national the Federal government ought to give its consent. That it took so long is shameful. The Conoco/Phillips transaction was a $1.7 billion dollars investment in Nigeria that would create more jobs, witness the establishment of allied industries and make the Nigerian Economy more attractive. I would have been extremely proud to have made such a transaction possible. 3. Regarding the nonsense about selling out on Ribadu. I think common sense should dictate that if eversuch a deal were reached we would have had to inform our members in all the States. How could that have been done secretly? How do you tell hundreds of thousands of people not to vote for your own party without it becoming public knowledge? At the formation of the APC, a crucial debate ensued about what to do about persons like Ikimi who had done awful things in the past, but who were now minded to align with the progressive tendency in Nigerian politics. Should we forever blacklist them? This would have been the easiest route, but it would have kept rancor alive. It would have made us slaves to the bleakest chapters of our past. Instead we opted to extend the hand of brotherhood, reconcile and put the past behind us. This would enable a broader political consensus, while also giving the likes of Ikimi an opportunity to atone fortheir grievous wrongs against the people and be rehabilitated. We recognized that many leading Nigerians had committed acts of shame. Some for private profit, others who were otherwise decent people who had become prisoners to a terrible system. Not surprisingly, Ikimi acting true to type abuse that magnanimity. He was never sincerely committed to the party. He was always playing out a PDP script. He only wanted the chairmanship of the party as a bargaining chip for negotiations with his benefactors. His defection purportedly on account of the loss of the chairmanship of the party is a mere subterfuge, once his ploy failed he had no other objective within the party, I knew he would go back to his sponsors. He is back in the company he deserves. And APC is better forit. saharareporters.com/2014/09/02/bola-tinubu-replies-tom-ikimi -Bola Ahmed Tinubu |

Stephen Davis, an Australian hostage negotiator who spent some time in Nigeria trying to secure the release of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants in Chibok, Borno State, told SaharaReporters that he stands by his widely reported allegations that former Governor Modu Sherriffof Borno State and a former Chief of Army staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika (ret.), were among the top sponsors of the Islamist insurgents who have massacred thousands of Nigerians and foreigners and made the northeast part of Nigeria a highly militarized zone. In an extensive telephone interview with SaharaReporters yesterday, Dr. Davis also accused an unnamed senior official of the Central Bank of Nigeria as well as a man based in Cairo, Egypt whom he claimed operates as Boko Haram’s bagman. He said both men, in addition to Mr. Sheriff and former General Ihejirika, were major players in the funding and continued existence of the deadly Islamist sect. Dr. Davis told SaharaReporters that he did not want to name the CBN official as this may prejudice investigation by Nigeria’s security services. Both accused men have reacted furiously to Mr. Davis’ allegation, with the former Borno governor threatening to travel to Australia to sue his accuser while Mr. Ihejirika accused former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir El Rufai, of being a “commander” of Boko Haram. Three days ago, Mr. El Rufai had posted transcripts and video of Mr. Davis’ accusations of the former governor and ex-Army chief on social media. Asked whether Mr. El Rufai and former military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari, had a hand in funding or sponsoring Boko Haram, Dr. Davis said their names have not been mentioned to him by any Boko Haram connections. Also, asked to explain why Mr. Ihejirika, a non-Muslim who hails from the predominantly Christian southeastern part of Nigeria, became a Boko Haram “sponsor,” Mr. Davis said, “Boko Haram commanders and some connected with them told me on several occasions Ihejirika was one of their sponsors.” He also disclosed that Mr. Sheriff always had the best military protection in Nigeria’s violence-plagued northeast, a protection he claimed the ex-governor enjoyed after he left office. Dr. Davis reiterated that his allegations were informed by discussions he had with several Boko Haram field commanders over a long period of time. Asked if President Goodluck Jonathan was aware of the insurgents’ sponsors and their specific roles, Dr. Davis said he was unsure of the extent of information currently before President Jonathan. He added that Mr. Jonathan had been weakened by lack of military loyalty and a history of security negligence. He gave the example of repeated attempts to bring the growth of Al Qa’eda associated cells to the attention of NSA’s since 2006 only to have them dismiss such reports as baseless. “By the time Goodluck Jonathan became president Boko Haram had become a potent weapon with a command structure embedded in 16 northern states fanned by support from corrupt politicians.” He further gave the example of Nigeria’s Minister of Defense, Aliyu Gusau, whom he accused of basically leaving Mr. Jonathan to carry his can without taking any responsibility forhis work. The Australian negotiator also revealed that his years working with Nigerian presidents on matters of terrorism had shown that, even when some prominent individuals are known to be involved in criminality, the presidents are simply too afraid to take them on. He cited the example of the Niger Delta region. He told SaharaReporters that he and former President Olusegun Obasanjo found out that Abiye Sekibo, who was then Mr. Obasanjo’s Transport Minister, had contracted the assassins who killed a prominent politician, Harry Marshall. He said he tried to persuade Mr. Obasanjo to prosecute Mr. Sekibo, but the then president declined, stating that such a trial could bring down his government. Dr. Davis touched on several aspects of Boko Haram activities, showing that he was quite knowledgeable about the sect’s actions. He told SaharaReporters that Boko Haram runs about six major camps in the northeast and neighboring countries, adding that 700 fighters inhabited each camp. In addition there are a range of smaller camps within Borno State, which are often temporary and to which kidnapped girls are taken to be used by the insurgents. The Australian revealed that earlier this year Boko Haram was a loose coalition of three Islamist militant groups that worked with one another, claiming that, since four months ago, the sects had merged into one single entity, become more cohesive, strategically effective and powerful. “They are now linking with other terrorist group in the region and will soon be very difficultto dismantle. If these political sponsors think they can turn these groups off after the 2015 elections they are going to be surprised to find it is out of their control.” On why he had chosen to speak out publicly at this time, Dr. Davis stated that, from experience, any terrorist group that has lasted more than eight years after its formation would likely exist for another 20 or more years beforeit can be dismantled. It thus becomes embedded for a generation and the likelihood of dismantling it was very low. “If we don’t do our utmost now to dismantle Boko Haram then we may not be able to do so for another generation. That is a very gloomy scenario forNigeria.” He touched on former National Security Adviser, Owoye Andrew Azazi, whom he described as utterly corrupt. He said Mr. Azazi, who was a retired Army general, was planning to buy into the Hilton hotel chain in London to the tune of $100 million beforehe died in a helicopter crash on December 15, 2012. Dr. Davis painted a portrait of Nigeria’s various intelligence units as operating in silos that refuse to share information that could tame terrorist groups. To illustrate his point, the Australian cited the example of the State Security Services. According to him, months after the SSS won the extradition from the Sudan of Aminu Ogwuche, a suspected terror mastermind who reportedly planned the deadly bombing of an Abuja bus station, the intelligence agency had yet to interrogate Mr. Ogwuche about his links with the three young men he reportedly contracted to carry out the bombing. Dr. Davis said the young men were three in number and that they lived in the home of a CBN official who also carried out banking transactions for Boko Haram through the CBN. He said two other young collaborators in the Nyanya Motor Park bombing remain on the run. The Australian hostage negotiator vowed to make more revelations about Boko Haram’s sponsors, adding that he believed the sect could only be dismantled if their sponsors were exposed and prosecuted. In particular, he said he could not see why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had not already moved on Sheriff forhis extensive looting of public funds when he was the Borno State governor, and forleaving the roads in Borno State in a terrible shape that has enabled Boko Haram to ambush Nigeria troops and massacre them mercilessly. He also added that the former governor should face the ultimate trial forfinancing the recruitment of young men to the Islamist sect. Dr. Davis dismissed Mr. Sheriff’s threat to travel to Australia to sue him forhis statements as grandstanding and seeking to divert attention from the real issue of Mr. Sheriff’s involvement with Boko Haram. He added that he would be pleased to meet the former governor at the airport whenever he developed the courage to come to Australia. saharareporters.com/2014/08/31/australian-negotiator-insists-modu-sheriff-ihejirika-sponsor-boko-haram-exonerates-buhari |

Sex is often seen as pleasurable to both men and women. Experts have always claimed a lot of energy goes into sexual activities, thus making sex a form 0f exercise. A new study has however discovered that lots of calories could be burnt via sex, thus making it a better form of exercise than jogging or running. Researchers have found out that the energy expended during sex, when compared to running, could get the hearts to pump and muscles to crank enough to qualify as a moderate form of exercise. According to them, a 25-minute session of sex, burns more calories, which is a unit of energy, than having a walk. A study by Anthony Karelis, a professor of Exercise Science at the University of Quebec, Canada, and his colleagues, which looked at how much energy is actually exerted during sex and compared it with other forms of body exercise, showed that having sex is better than working out or jogging. The research further showed that one hour of sex (based on the premise that sex burns at least 100 calories per session), could equal many other strenuous activities that could knock anyone out. The goal of the choice of the comparative exercise was to use an exercise that could be regularly practised by the general population. The study, among others, further revealed that, beyond the pleasure and excitement, sexual activities could have an important influence on overall health and quality of life when compared to other activities like jogging, running or walking. In the study, the researchers recruited 21 healthy, active, heterosexual couples aged between 18 and 35 to jog on treadmills at about 65 per cent of their maximum heart rates for 30 minutes while wearing lightweight armband monitors that measure energy expenditure in calories. Next, the couples were told to have sex, including pre-intimacy, once a week for a month while wearing the same armbands to track their calories and intensity during the sexual activity. The duration of the sex varied, but the average session across all couples for the month was about 25 minutes. The couples were instructed to perform their usual sexual activities and not use any drug, alcohol or medication for sexual or erectile dysfunction, before the sexual activity. The study found that, on average, the men burnt 9.2 calories per minute while jogging, while they burnt 4.2 calories per minute during sex. In other words, about 230 calories were used up for a 25-minute jog, while 105 calories were used up for the same 25-minute session of sex. And for the women, they burnt 7.1 calories per minute while jogging and 3.1 calories per minute during sex. Even though jogging for about half an hour taxed everyone’s body more than having sex, 98 per cent of the participants in the study reported that sex felt more fun than jogging and that they enjoyed sex as an exercise than jogging. Only five per cent of all participants reported that sexual activity was more strenuous when compared to the 30-minute treadmill exercise. Furthermore, the study showed that having sex burns more calories of energy than walking as a form of exercise and even when some men have brief sex for few minutes, they use more energy than they do while walking fast up and down. Whereas, jogging, by comparison, is more strenuous, some men, according to the activity monitor on their hands, used more energy for brief periods during sex than they did during jogging. It can then be deduced that an hour of romance and sex under the sheets burns many calories than walking and almost as many calories as a 30-minute jog. While men use up 120 calories of energy during half an hour of sex, women use up 90 calories. This is expected anyway since it is believed the men do most of the ‘work’ during sex. As part of the study, couples were asked to fill out questionnaires about how each session of jogging and love making made them feel physically and psychologically. When the researchers analysed all the results, Karelis said it was clear that sex qualified as “moderate exercise.” The seven-point questionnaire assessed issues after the sexual activity to include how tired they were, how much efforts they put in and how much they enjoyed either the sex or jogging. Karelis said, “The participants burned enough calories and reached high enough intensities for sex to be considered ‘moderate intensity’ and legitimate form of exercise, the equivalent of walking briskly. “However, sex is not always an exercise; sometimes it is not hot, heavy and does not always last long, so you can’t count every quickie as a moderate workout, but sex can be considered, at times, as a significant exercise, worth encouraging in people who otherwise hesitate to work out. “Sexual activity is an important and relevant activity to humanlife and appears to impact on the mental, physical and social health as well as the quality of life of the individual.” Notably, the participants were young people, and understandably, many old people may not have the requisite strength for a good time in bed, however, the researchers advised that sex should not replace regular exercise, rather, they should both be incorporated into one’s routine on a regular basis. Studies show that each improves health, so the combination of the two leads to a greater quality of life. It was also observed that couples could vary sexy moves or styles, such that all their body parts would be involved and exercised in the love-making process. A report on consumerhealthdigest.com shows that exploring many sex styles and being enthusiastic will help women especially. Apart from sex, jogging, running and walking, experts advise that people can also reduce calorie levels by dieting, which involves examining carefully and looking critically at what they eat. A psychologist, Miss Oladele Olaitan, said even though sex is a form of exercise, it is different from jogging. She, however, said that both activities involve burning some calories. “You burn calories in the process of having sex or jogging. But whether you exert more energy while doing either of them depends on individuals because of our unique composition and the unique activities that are involved in the processes of either having sex or jogging, therefore, a generalisation cannot be reached,” she added. A medical practitioner, Dr. Rotimi Adesanya, said sex tends to be a moderate form of exercise because it involves the emotions, mind and the brain, adding that once the brain is involved in any activity, more energy would be consumed than some physical activities. He explained that the hormones released during exercise include prolactin, which helps the heart to pump blood to other parts of the body well, while prolactin hormone is released during sex which helps mental capacity and accuracy, also responsible for the alertness and synergy of the mind, body and soul. A Physiologist, Dr. Clement Nku, said he would not really say that sex is be a better form of exercise, saying he would advise that physical exercise is most preferable, whether mild, moderate or severe, depending on the preference of individuals. He added that the calories burnt depend on the kind of exercise the person engage in. “Hormones are also secreted during those forms of exercise, be it physical or sexual intercourse, but I will never advise somebody to go for sex as a form of exercise. The physical form of exercise is better,” he said. www.punchng.com/entertainment/saturday-breeze/sex-better-form-of-exercise-than-jogging-study/ |
Some governorship aspirants, under the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Adamawa State, have asked the party not to grant waiver to Mr. Nuhu Ribadu and others who seek to enable them contest the party’s primary. The petition, which was submitted at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, said that Ribadu and three other aspirants should therefore be disallowed from taking part in the primary.Apart from Ribadu, other aspirants the petitioners asked to be denied waiver are Mohammed Modibbo, Marcus Gundiri, Buba Marwa and Aliyu Kama. The seven aspirants, who signed the petition are, Dr. Umar Ardo, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, Mr. James Barka, Sen. Andrawus Sawa, Sen. Abubakar Halilu Girei, Dr. Idi Hong and Alhaji Awwal Tukur. The petition, which was sent to the Chairmanof Waiver Panel and the party’s National Organising Secretary, Abubakar Mustapha was titled “objection to granting of waivers for the purpose of contesting the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primaries in Adamawa state for the forthcoming October 11 bye-election.”The petitioners argued that Ribadu, Gunduri and Modibbo joined the PDP for the first time only recently, while Marwa and Kama returned to the PDP less than two years ago.The petition signed by the seven aspirants reads in part, “We would ordinarily have had no objection to their being granted waiver to contest the governorship election, but what we cannot consent to is their presenting themselves for contest without subjecting themselves to the constitutional provisions of seeking waivers and strictly adhering to the process and for the national leadership to act otherwise.”However, two of the affected aspirants have reacted to the accusation. While Modibbo, in a statement by his Media Assistant, Mr. Julius Toba, said, he had been a member of the party for long, Ribadu described his enemies as empty shell.Modibbo said. “In as much as I would not like to join issues with any politician or fellow aspirants in this race, we cannot afford to watch and allow a few un-serious elements to have a field day running him down.“Just like other allegations made against any forward-looking politician of Adamawa extraction by Ardo in the past; this latest one too smacks of bad blood, it is ridiculous, baseless and laughable in its entirety.“For avoidance of doubt and in our effort to put the record straight, Dr. Modibbo is a foundation member of PDP, a party he had contributed immensely towards since its inception. He first got his initiation into PDP during the 1998 Jos Convention.“Since 2009 till date, we have documentary evidences indicating that my principal is a key financial member of PDP both at the state and national levels.”“For instance, commencing from January 2009, he had received no fewer than ten letters of appreciation from Adamawa state executive committee of the party for various of his philanthropic gestures.”Ribadu, in his reaction said, “those huffing and buffing over the entrance of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu into this race portray themselves as empty shells that they are.“The attempt to truncate a legitimate process is totally condemnable and uncalled for.“There is no basis for opposition to granting of the waiver. We don’t seek for advantage over any aspirant. What we advocate for is for everybody to be allowed to participate in an open and transparent manner. No party member is superior to another.” |
Catfish is one of the most popular and readily available fish, especially in this part of the world. In fact, a local delicacy, known as ‘fresh fish pepper soup’ or ‘point and kill’, prepared with catfish is the favourite among diners at social gatherings and eateries in Nigeria. It is quite tasty and affordable when compared to other varieties of fresh fish in the market. But did you know that the Omega-6 fatty acids in catfish can increase your risk of getting blood clots, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and some cancers? Although doctors have maintained that fish is a better and healthier alternative to beef, they note that not all types of fish are good for the body, especially the heart. According to them, the cat fish is loaded with bad fats that may trigger blood clotting, a condition that disrupts the flow of blood in the humanbody, thereby leading to cardiac arrest, thrombosis and in some cases, heart attack. A cardiologist, Dr. Jane Anisulowo, says that farm-raised or home-grown catfish contain more fatty hormones than the variety harvested at sea. Anisulowo says,“ Fish is better than meat, no doubt, It digests easily and it is loaded with proteins. However, catfish is not really a good option, especially the ones they sell these days, which are cultivated with hormonal feeds that are highly concentrated and filled with steroids and other fattening chemicals just to make them profitable. These chemicals are cancerous in nature. “Fish itself contains oil, but catfish has oil in its skin. That is what makes it so oily and unhealthy. It also contains a lot of unsaturated fats that do not only make you fat but settles in the blood stream. This is very dangerous because when blood fails to get to an organ, it fails and suffers paralysis.” A study conducted by the National Institute of Health, USA, in 2012, using over 1,000 species of the fish in many waters of the world, shows that catfish contains a high amount of unfavourable omega-6 fat that causes inflammationin the body. According to scientists, a three-ounce portion of catfish contains the same amount of bad fats found in red meat. This is not to say that one should give up eating catfish all together as it contains some nutrients, such as Omega3 fatty acids that are good for the body. Anisulowo notes that eating it on few occasions may save one from the dangers it poses to one’s health. She says, “If you can get the one from the river, which is rare in most cities, then you may eat it two times in a month. If the only one you can get is the type that is reared by farmers, it is either you don’t eat it at all or you eat it when it is partially smoked. That way, some of the fats would have been lost in the process. Still, there are other species of fish that are oily, but they contain good fats and are more nutritious.” Here are other species of fish that you can add to your diet and their health benefits: Mackerel This variety of fish is popularly known as Titus. The oily meat of the mackerel contains its main health benefits. This fish oil, which is also known as omega-3 fatty acid, is so beneficial to human health that it has been processed into a supplement. It lowers triglycerides and high levels of triglycerides, which have been linked to heart disease and stroke, in the body. The most common causes of high triglyceride level are obesity and poorly maintained diabetes, arising from inactive lifestyle and a poor diet that includes a high intake of sugary foods, carbohydrates and alcohol. Fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, like mackerel, have proved to be very effective in lowering triglyceride levels. Mackerel has also proved to be effective in reducing the risk of heart disease or death from heart attack due to its omega-3 fatty acids. Some researchers have found that omega-3 fatty acid is even more effective at reducing heart attacks than some commonly prescribed drugs used for lowering cholesterol. Mackerel is good for the blood. It improves blood circulation in the body and lowesr blood pressure by allowing blood vessels to expand and be more elastic. It can also help one to fight and prevent cancer by reducing the amount of agents that cause cancer in the body cells, primarily in the breast, colon and prostate areas. Tilapia Tilapia is a high-quality fish. It contains complete protein and all the essential amino acids that your body needs. One portion of tilapia, cooked by using dry heat, contains about 26 grammes of protein. The Institute of Medicine, USA recommends that men consume at least 56 grammes of protein, women consume at least 46 grammes, while pregnant women and nursing mothers consume about 71 grammes of protein each day. Eating tilapia can help you achieve that. It may help in weight control. Tilapia is naturally low in fat and only contains about 128 calories in each portion. According to a study published in a 2006 edition of ‘The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation’, subjects who consumed eight grammes of tilapia each week showed improved body weight. www.punchng.com/health/healthwise/catfish-has-bad-fats-try-mackerel |

Cool-FM spelling game: A goodie bag filled with Amila drink. And someone is asking why there is so much failure in WASSCE?” That was a message I received on my phone some days ago. My friend, Ayodele Adeyemi, told me a similar story recently. Someone saw the brilliance of his daughter and told her that she would be a doctor. The girl said no: She would be a musician. The person was surprised. That story is not strange today. If you ask children in primary school or even secondary school whom would they like to be like in future, they would mention Davido, Whizkid, Omawumi, Don Jazzy, Genevieve Nnaji or Ali Baba. It is a good thing that our entertainment industry has become a source of pride to our nation and a source of livelihood for thousands of youths. Youths who could have been at jobs they hated or even derailed into crime have found themselves happily and richly employed. Rather than being mocked by society, they have become a source of envy and admiration. But therein lies the problem. Since the entertainment industry has become a money spinner and a glamorous industry, every child wants to be in it. But, why not? Currently, the TV programmes with the highest prizes are in music or entertainment. Unknown faces become celebrities almost overnight. Their mates watch such transformation and are filled with envy and admiration. Children watch their intelligent uncles and parents go unnoticed, uncelebrated and impoverished, while entertainers – many of whom are not particularly book-intelligent – become the stars of the day. On the contrary, how many big-budget programmes or prizes are dedicated to rewarding excellence in creativity or the like? Very few. The NLNG Prize for Literature was virtually the only big prize until recently when Etisalat Prize for Literature came on stream. The doctors, lecturers, teachers, etc are frequently on strike over pay and conditions of service. Nigerian writers have to move to the United States or the United Kingdom to be appreciated. Beside entertainment, politics is the other field that is very attractive because of the direct and indirect money that oozes out of it as well as the glamour that goes with it. It is more rewarding – financially and socially – to be a local government chairman than to be a professor. If you are lucky to be a senator, a minister or a governor, you are made for life! Beyond amassing a lot of money, you are also initiated into the political circle, which ensures that even when you leave office, you are made an ambassador, a chairman of an agency or the like. You would not like to go back to the university, your medical practice or whatever you were before. As a doctor, an engineer or lecturer, your money comes in trickles, but as a senator or governor, it drops into your account like a bomb regularly. But if you can’t be a politician, why not be an entertainer? President Goodluck Jonathan may not feel cool when shaking an engineer, computer scientist or professor, but when he is shaking hands with a musician like D’Banj or an actress like Genevieve, you will notice that his smile will be broader. Why? He is shaking hands with a star. Unlike before when our entertainers just had enough to take care of their basic needs, today’s entertainers earn up to N5m for a 10-minute solo rendition of two of their songs on stage. For those who have up to four shows per month, even if they earn a million naira per show, that gives them N4m monthly. Many CEOs of top companies don’t earn that. And this amount excludes the money made from commercials, endorsements, celebrity appearances, fees to act as a judge at shows, album sales, and any other private businesses the celebrity is involved in. So, it is not surprising that many of our young ones want to be entertainers. In their views, excluding the money and glamour in entertainment, it does not look as strenuous as reading and sitting for exams to be a pharmacist or a professor. Being a musician is fun. You stand on stage (in the limelight) while others huddle together in darkness, watching you. You don’t need to have all A’s or come first in your class. But once successful, you overshadow your siblings and parents. Your parents and siblings are identified from your standpoint: Omawumi’s mother, Omotola’s husband, Okocha’s sister. You travel from one city to the other or from one country to the other, stay in the best hotels, eat the best foods, and drink the best wines – all the time. No wonder, parents railroad their children into entertainment. They organise three or four of them to sing, put it in CDs and send the children to filling stations and shopping malls to sell the CDs. Some parents push their children to participate in all music competitions in the land. Those who are wealthy use their wealth or connection to push their children to be featured regularly in the media. At the auditions of reality shows, there is no manner of people you won’t see. Even those who croak like toads participate, believing that they are the next “Tu Baba” or “PSquare.” It is all because of how lucrative the entertainment industry. TV stations have also caught the virus. While new all-music channels and programmes are springing up, almost all the local channels have dedicated the hours of 12 noon to 2pm to music. It is a great thing that our entertainment industry is booming. Many African countries are envious of our achievement, but we need to emulate the US in our national development. The reason the US is different is that it is not a one-product economy. While it is the headquarters of entertainment in the world, it is also the headquarters of academic excellence and research. It consciously encourages its doctors, engineers, scientists, lecturers, broadcasters, writers, etc, to be the best by providing a wonderful environment. It does not create the impression that a senator is better than a professor by paying the senator higher than the professor, or giving the senator more recognition than the professor. Even though it glamorises the actor or musician, it does not give the actor or musician any impression that he is better than the police constable or primary school teacher. Politics is not made so lucrative that every media person prays to be appointed a politician’s press secretary. Many broadcasters actually earn more than politicians; so politicians can’t talk down on them or buy them over. The street cleaner does her job with pride. She knows that one day she can write a book on strategic street cleaning and it will become a bestseller that earns her millions of dollars and fame. She does not need to become a musician, a politician, a contractor, or a girlfriend to a politician before she can become successful as a street cleaner. That is how a robust economy is built. It is an economy in which people have the potential to excel, to be rich and get national recognition in whatever field they operate in. That way, children who have the proclivity for research or teaching are not discouraged by such fields’ low-rewarding prospects and get lured into music or acting. Those who will sing will sing. Those who will act will act. But the nation must not make those who should be in other fields to jump into entertainment or emigrate, just because they believe that their natural field is unappreciated. www.punchng.com/opinion/before-all-our-children-become-musicians/ |

I'm a young man and age is still on my side. I will not allow anyone to trade with me, for the second time. It was wrong for Gov. Kwankwaso to describe my decision to join the PDP as a betrayal, because I consulted widely. The truth is that, the APC does not have what it takes to change Nigeria, and any ambition driven by grievance, bitterness and vendetta can not be said to possess any element of change. And it is only a matter of time and Nigerians will know who truly loves them. I think the APC would have done well without the aggrieved PDP governors. With due respect to governor Amaechi, he is simply hungry forpower and do not know how to go about it, except with money. I may not know how to become the President of Nigeria, but I know it's never forthe highest bidder and it's never up for sale. It's an undeniable fact, that President Jonathan has done well for Nigeria in such a very short time, and I think he is the answer to the prayer of many Nigerians. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, speaker of the house of representatives in preparation for the 2015 presidential election is set to dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the leading opposition All Progressives Congress “in a matter of weeks”, a source has told TheCable. It was also gathered that Tambuwal will defect just in time to indicate his interest in the presidential ticket of the APC. According to the timetable for the 2015 elections drawn up by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), parties are scheduled to hold their presidential conventions in October. Tambuwal gave the biggest hint yet about his planned defection on Sunday in his hometown, Tambuwal, Sokoto State, where he went to pick his permanent voter’s card. Asked if he was going to defect to the APC, he replied in Hausa: “Kowa ni tsuntsu kukangidan su yake yi.” Interpreted, it means “birds of the same feather flock together”. He also said Nigeria can do “with good leadership”. Although he is a member of the PDP, he was elected speaker in 2011 against the wish of the party leadership and has openly associated with the opposition without officially defecting. The ruling party had zoned the position to the south-west, but the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (which is now part of APC) teamed up with pro-Tambuwal PDP lawmakers as well as those from other opposition parties to edge out the PDP candidate, Mrs Mulikat Akande-Adeola. TheCable asked one of Tambuwal’s associates if he would vacate his position as a result of the defection, but he replied: “There is nothing in the law that says the speaker must come from the ruling party. It simply says someone with legislative experience should be elected speaker.” In 1979, the speaker of the house of representatives, Hon. Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, was from the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP), although the ruling party was the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). However, both NPP and NPN were in alliance, leading to a power-sharing agreement. Tambuwal recently met with former President Olusegun Obasanjoas part of consultations over his ambition. He had also been recommended for “higher office” by former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, in the past. Posters announcing his presidential bid were all over Abuja a few weeks ago and although he denied having a hand in it, he did not rule out running. Others thought to be interested in the presidential ticket of the APC include Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Senator Bukola Saraki |
former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu, has dumped the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC] and joined the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP]. Mr. Ribadu was the presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria [ACN] in 2011 and until his defection today considered one of the presidential prospects of the APC in the 2015 presidential election. A member of the executive committee of the PDP in Bako, Mr. Ribadu’s ward in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa state, told PREMIUM TIMES that the anti-corruption chief has been registered as a member of the party and given a party membership card. The source asked not to be named because he was not authorised to disclose the development to journalists. A PREMIUM TIMES reporthad detailed how the PDP leadership led by the party’s national chairman, Adamu Muazu, mounted pressure on Mr. Ribadu to join the party and be its candidate for the October 11 governorship election in Adamawa. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has already released a timetable for an election being organised to replace former Governor Murtala Nyako who was impeached by the State Assembly last month. Already, Acting Governor Umaru Fintiri and Awwal Tukur, a son of former chairman of the PDP, Bamanga Tukur, have picked the notice of intent form to seek the PDP governorship nomination forthe election. A former military administrator of Lagos state, Buba Marwa, has also indicated interest in running. Effortsto speak with Mr. Ribadu or his spokesperson, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, were unsuccessful. Both men’s mobile telephones phones were switched off when PREMIUMTIMES tried to reach them. Mr. Ribadu is yet to publicly declare for the PDP although he has not refuted any of the reports linking him to the party. |
Chelsea have announced that Victor Moses has today joined Stoke City on loan until the end of the season. The Super Eagles forward will be uniting with his compatriot Osaze Odemwingie at the Britania as Stoke will be hoping to improve on their last season’s performance in the EPL. 23-year-old Moses who moved to Stamford Bridge in August 2012 and helped the Blues win the Europa League the following year, netting four times en route to the final has found it difficult to pin down a regular playing shirt. A loan move to Liverpool did very little to improve the chances of Moses who represented Nigeria at this summer's World Cup and was also an integral part of the Super Eagles side which won the African Cup of Nations last year. While announcing the departure of Moses, Chelsea stated that they wish the Nigerian star luck at his new as they will keep tabs on his progress under Coach Mark Hughes. |
Danladi Irmiya Kifasi, the man President Goodluck Jonathan just named as the new Head of Service of the Federation, had been indicted of corruption in 2000 and barred from holding public office, according to a government White Paper obtained by SaharaReporters. Last Wednesday, Mr. Jonathan appointed Mr. Kifasi as the new head of Nigeria’s civil service following the retirement of Bukar Goni Aji, the immediate past Head of Service. The position means that Mr. Kifasi is to oversee Nigeria’s civil service. The controversial appointee formerly worked as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. Several sources told SaharaReporters that Nigeria’s powerful Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, prevailed on President Jonathan to appoint Mr. Kifasi, despite his indictment on corruption. An anti-corruption activist who helped provide information about Mr. Kifasi’s corrupt past said that his appointment provoked questions of credibility and highlighted Mr. Jonathan’s penchant for hobnobbing with corrupt elements. The source wondered what kind of disconnect made it possible forthe president to elevate a man like Mr. Kifasi to the topmost post in the civil service despite the existence of a Government White Paper that declared Mr. Kifasi unfit forpublic office. The White Paper arose from Mr. Kifasi’s involvement in a financial scandal at the Federal Superphosphate Fertilizer Company (FSFC) in Kaduna, capital of Kaduna State. In 2000, a panel of inquiry looked into a scandal that involved Mr. Kifasi, Awal Tukur, Jide Omokore, who is also close to President Jonathan, Ben Osuji, J.B. Ghumdia, J.O. Odu, and Fivatek Nigeria Limited. The panel investigated how the mentioned subjects defrauded the FSFC by making up costs, misappropriating funds, inflating the price of items, and tampering with the contract for the building of a sulfuric acid plant. The investigation concluded that Mr. Kifasi, who was then the director of the FSFC, had given out freebags of fertilizerto officials in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. Mr. Kifasi also handed out four all-wheel-drive trucks ordered forthe plant to agriculture officials. The White Paper, which heavily indicted both Mr. Kifasi and Mr. Omokore, made strong recommendations in relation to the former. The investigating commission recommended that Mr. Kifasi should refund the total amount of funds spent on overpricing of items during his tenure. Investigators found that the inflation of prices was deliberate and part of Mr. Kifasi’s calculated acts of fraud. The investigators also found that Mr. Kifasi engaged in widespread maladministration, including the misapplication of funds, dishonesty and flagrant violation of financial regulations. The commission added that Mr. Kifasi’s acts of corruption led to huge losses and imposed a heavy debt burden on the FSFC. Not only did the commission declare Mr. Kifasi unfit to hold public office, it also recommended his dismissal from the service. The Commission recommended that Mr. Kifasi should refund various sums, including N20,047,844.25 lost by the Company through his hyperinflation of prices forsulfuric acid. In addition, the commission ordered that Mr. Kifasi should refund N12,100,000 being the difference betweenfunds he claimed to have spent on a missing fire truck and water tanker and the correct price of the vehicle. Mr. Kifasi had claimed that former President Umaru Yar’Adua had extended a presidential pardon to him, but there is no government gazette available to authenticate the claim. |
