Doctor Conrad Murray, personal doctor of the late King o Pop, Michael Jackson, has disclosed in an exclusive interview with the Dail Mail of London that the singer killed himself by taking an overdose of his drugs. Murray who was convicted of killing Michael Jackson spoke out for the first time to try to clear his name, claiming that the superstar died of an accidental overdose. “I did not kill Michael Jackson. He was a drug addict. Michael Jackson accidentally killed Michael Jackson,” Murray stated. The 60-year-old heart surgeon, released from prison three weeks ago, having served half of his four-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter, began working for Jackson in 2006. But it was not until he went to help him prepare for his This Is It come- back tour in 2009 that he saw the devastation of his life. “He was in crisis at the end of his life, filled with panic and,” he said. “By the end Michael Jackson was a broken man. I tried to protect him but instead I was brought down with him.” Murray claims Jackson had been dragged “into the abyss” of physical and mental anguish by the pressures of the tour. He claims he lived in a state of paranoia and filth: maids were not even allowed to take his underwear to be laundered because he feared they would sell it. Murray insists he was one of the few people the superstar trusted. “You want to know how close we were? I held his penis every night to fit a catheter because he was incontinent at night.” The doctor said Jackson’s 5’11” frame had wasted to little over nine stone, he was suffering from chills, insomnia and mood swings and he was dependent on the prescription drug propofol to help him sleep. Murray claims he had ‘weaned’ Jackson off the drug the singer called ‘milk’ only days before his death on June 25, 2009. He believes his insomnia that night was due to withdrawal symptoms from another drug, Demerol, an analgesic better known as pethidine, which had been provided by another doctor without his knowledge. In a claim, made for the first time, Murray insists that while he was out of the room Jackson got up and injected himself with a lethal dose of propofol after Murray had refused to give him the amount he wanted. The heart surgeon claims he did everything he could to save Jackson. Whether or not you believe him, he has clearly convinced himself. He says the singer had told him shortly before his death that their names would become ‘inseparable.’ When Murray asked him what he meant ‘he smiled and said: ‘I am clairvoyant.’ Murray has filed an appeal against his conviction. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/11/25/michael-jackson-killed-himself-doctor/

New Twist In Anambra Guber: Ekwunife Asks Court To Declare Her APGA Candidate https://www.nairaland.com/1530182/new-twist-anambra-guber-ekwunife |

There is a new twist in the controversial Anambra State governorship election whose outcome remains inconclusive and a supplementary poll is planned for November 30. One of the aspirants for the ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Hon. Uche Ekwunife is asking that the court declare her the authentic candidate of the party. Ekwunife is the runner- up to Mr. Willie Obiano at the APGA governorship primary, having scored the second highest votes. In a suit filed at the Federal High Court, Awka, Anambra State capital, Hon Ekwunife, a member of the House of Representatives, prayed the court to declare her as the rightful candidate for APGA in the November 16, 2013 governorship election. In her suit which has Mr. Willy Obiano, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and APGA, as the first, second and third defendants respectively, Ekwunife is urging the court to disqualify Obiano as the candidate of APGA, by virtue of his alleged multiple registration in Lagos and Anambra states. In the originating summons filed by her counsel, Chief Ugo Ugwunnadi, she argued: “By virtue of the multiple registration, which is a serious electoral offence and by the combined effect of Sections 9 (1), (2), (3), 2, 3, 12 (1), (2) and 24 (1)(e) of the 2010 Electoral Act of Nigeria, as amended, and Section 178 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, Mr. Obiano is not a registered voter qualified to vote and be voted for in Anambra State and therefore, he cannot contest an election in a state, where he is not a legally and validly registered voter.” In her supporting affidavit to the originating summons, the federal lawmaker alleged: “Mr. Obiano was assigned with three different VIN numbers, by virtue of the multiple registration as follows – (1) 90F5 B12B 0129 6204 172, (2) 90F5 B15E 7D37 8200 332, and (3) 90F5 B12B 8837 7091 121 respectively, annexed as Exhibits UE2, UE3 and UE4. All these appeared in three different Voters’ Register.” Consequent upon this, Ekwunife is also asking the court for an order directing APGA to substitute the name of Obiano with hers and for INEC to deal with her as the rightful candidate of APGA and moreso, for the fact that elections were contested, lost and won by political parties and not individuals. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/new-twist-anambra-guber-ekwunife-asks-court-declare-apga-candidate/

ASUU vows to continue strike •…As earned allowance divides union Hope of final resolution of the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was dashed on Saturday, as the union has vowed to continue with the industrial action. This was the outcome of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting secretly held in Kano, where it was agreed that the strike would continue until it got concrete assurance of implementation of all agreements from the Federal Government. In a release the union sent to its members and obtained by Sunday Tribune, it said: “...based on feedback from branches, the union resolved to clear some grey areas before any further action. If we must remove strikes as a regular feature in our University system, then we must get things sorted out permanently. Be steadfast as we await next congress meeting.” Attempts by pressmen, who had positioned themselves at the Bayero University Kano as early as 7 a.m. yesterday, to get the outcome of the meeting were unsuccessful, as it was learnt that the branch chairmen of the union across the country, which converged on Kano on Friday, had decided not to talk to the media. Sunday Tribune reliably gathered that the ASUU NEC was still meeting as of 7 p.m. yesterday, hoping to reach a concrete decision which it would transmit to other members at the next congress meeting. According to a source, who spoke to Sunday Tribune on condition of anonymity, though the union agreed that the offer by Federal Government to inject N200 billion into universities annually, beginning from 2014 and for the next four years was sensible, members were skeptical about the implementation of all the agreements reached. “We agreed that the Federal Government’s offer is sensible but we are not convinced about its implementation and so we have to continue the strike so as to fully sort things out to avoid future strikes,” the source stated. ASUU had embarked on the strike in July, following the failure of the Federal Government to implement a 2009 agreement it entered into with the union, citing the needs to upgrade the universities to world standards and improve the condition of service of the lecturers, among others, with the Federal Government releasing N100billion for the improvement of universities and N40 billion to be shared as earned allowance, while promising to make more funds available. Sunday Tribune, however, gathered that a fresh crisis might have been set off in the union over the issue of earned allowance. According to the source, the manner university management shared the earned allowance among varsity workers was already causing disaffection among ASUU members. The lecturers, it was learnt, felt bitter that their struggle had only benefited SSANU and NASU which did not participate in the strike but got hefty returns, “because the managements have shared the allowance wrongly. “ASUU members got less than they deserved from the allowance while other unions fed fat from it; it looks as if we only fought for other unions. Members are really angry about this,” he said, noting that these were some of the issues that would be tabled at the congress of the union later in the week. Other contentious issues, stated the source, “are the 2009 agreement which is due for re-negotioation and our salary. We felt that until these are resolved, it will be futile to call off the strike. So the strike continues.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/lead-stories/item/27047-ASUU-vows-to-continue-strike-•…as-earned-allowance-divides-union.html |

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Friday admitted that it did not meet the expectations of Nigerians in the conduct of the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State , though it did its best to ensure it was credible. The Commission also fixed November 30 for the supplementary election, saying no convincing reason had been given for the cancellation of the poll. However, three main contenders in the election, Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Ifeanyi Ubah of the Labour Party, LP, hinted on Friday night in a television interview that they might boycott the supplementary election. The APC in a statement also said it would boycott the supplementary election. The INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, at a press conference in Abuja, said though the Commission was determined to make the Anambra governorship election the best so far conducted in the country and had prepared for it more than the previous elections, it regretted that its operational performance could not satisfy Nigerians. “No doubt that INEC’s operational performance in that election has not met the expectations of Nigerians. We regret shattering the expectations of Nigerians, but we did our best in the circumstances to have free, fair and credible election,” Mr. Jega stated. The INEC chairman said the Commission met with its senior management officers who supervised the election, during which they reviewed the conduct of the election and analysed information received from participants. According to him, the meeting examined all the accusations and allegations that were made and came to the conclusion that in spite of minor and unfortunate challenges in the field, there was no substantial evidence to support the outright cancellation of the election as being demanded by some of the candidates and parties. He said the decision of the Returning Officer in the election of the need to do a supplementary election was “correct,” since there was substantial compliance with the electoral laws, adding, “Therefore we have decided that the supplementary election will hold in Anambra State on Saturday November 30.” Mr. Jega regretted logistical challenges, especially the late arrival of materials, saying that the commission did all it could to make the election the best but “it did not turn out to be the best INEC has conducted so far.” He explained that the Commission did a thorough estimate of the number of vehicles needed for the poll and provided adequately for it. He denied claims that some voters were deliberately disenfranchised during the election, insisting that it was not enough reason to be used to cancel the election. According to him, those who could not vote might have been involved in multiple registrations or did not take advantage of continuing voter registration to renew their registration. “This is regrettable given INEC’s efforts in cleaning up the register and make it much more credible,” Mr. Jega said. “I want to remind us that before the election, the Commission met with Chairmen and secretaries of all registered parties, who came with their candidates. “We briefed them adequately on the register. We told them how the number of candidates had come down from about 1.8million to 1.7 million. We briefed them on the efforts we were making and that in Anambra election, there will be no need for addendum register. “From our assessment on the allegation of disenfranchisement, we believe that a substantial overwhelming majority of them must have been either people who had done multiple registrations or did not take advantage of the continuing voter registration.” Mr. Jega said the challenge was for the political parties making the allegation to prove that there was disenfranchisement based on the voter register, stressing that “the issue of disenfranchisement cannot be used to cancel the election or do a fresh election.” The INEC chairman said the only difference between the register release to the parties 30 days before the election and the one eventually used, was age, which “we explained to the stakeholders and they did not complain about.” Mr. Jega insisted that the 183 people arrested by the Imo Police Command on their way to Anambra State were not accredited observers, adding that they were already being prosecuted. He said that unlike the previous election, the process of accreditation for the Anambra election was rigorous. He gave the name of the INEC official arrested in Idemili North LGA as Chukwujekwu Okeke, even as he stated that it was unfair to accuse INEC of hiding the identity of the officer. He assured that if the Commission found any of its staff culpable in undermining the election, such staff would not go unpunished. He urged the political parties and their candidates to cooperate with the Commission in order to conclude the election on Saturday. “I regret to say that in spite of our best intentions as human beings to make the election the best we get disappointed. As much as Nigerians were disappointed with the result, we are also disappointed with the result. We wanted the election to be the best. “We ask all stakeholders to cooperate with us. We are not making excuses. I must say that making elections peaceful and credible is a joint effort of INEC and stakeholders.” Mr. Jega confirmed that the Commission was attending to the petition by the All Progressives Congress, APC, which he said was received on Thursday. He, however said that the petition merely repeated all the allegations already made by its candidate in the election, Chris Ngige. “Some of them (allegations) we have thoroughly investigated,” he added, pointing out that if the purpose of the petition was to convince the Commission to cancel the election, it would not do so because there was no strong evidence marshalled by the party to achieve that. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/150200-anambra-poll-inec-disappointed-nigerians-jega-admits.html |

The police at Idimu, Lagos, western Nigeria have arrested the wife of a pastor, Mrs. Angela Uzoma, for pouring hot water on her sister. She was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for injuring the teenager. The 28-year old housewife who is also the women’s leader in her husband’s ministry at Shasha allegedly poured hot water on Chidinma Chukwu, causing her serious injury. The incident happened at their residence at Ifelodun Street Orisunmbare, Shasha, Lagos State, western Nigeria. P.M.NEWS gathered that the pastor’s wife accused the 14-year old Chidinma of selling only few pawpaws on the fateful day. Angela, according to the police investigating officer (IPO), had warned Chidinma to ensure that she did not come back home without selling all the pawpaws packed in her tray for sale that day. Unfortunately, she did not sell everything and Angela became angry, accusing her of being too playful. P.M.NEWS gathered that she tried to hide the incident by refusing to take her to a hospital. Instead, she arranged with a nurse who was treating her at home. The matter came into the open when a samaritan heard of it and reported to the police at Idimu. Angela was promptly arrested. Narrating what happened, Angela told P.M.NEWS at the police station that she did not intentionally pour water on her, adding that she brought her from the village to train her and she was hawking pawpaw to assist the family to feed. “It is the devil’s work and I regret what happened. I want to settle this matter out of court,” she begged. Her husband, Pastor Paul Uzoma, described the incident as unfortunate. “When I heard of it, I blamed my wife and told her she went too far,” he said. He, however, said his wife meant well for the girl and that was why she brought her to Lagos to train her. When she was arraigned in court on Tuesday, she pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mr. P.E Nwaka granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. She was ordered to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa when she couldn’t fulfill the conditions attached to her bail. The matter has been adjourned till 12 December, 2013 http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/11/20/pastors-wife-bathes-sister-with-hot-water/
