Mr. Maku said the North must wake up to the new political reality in Nigeria. The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, in Kaduna on Tuesday said President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was the best thing to have happened to the North since the Yakubu Gowon government that ended in 1975. Mr. Maku said this in Kaduna during a town hall meeting organised as part of National Good Governance Tour of Kaduna State. “There has been a denial, a political denial that President Goodluck Jonathan is not developing the North. “And there has been an agenda of deceit and propaganda, which is carried out mainly by people and political opinions in some quarters in the north that continuously want to deny the imprint of this administration. “The truth is that, never since Gowon days have you seen the Federal Government that is impacting significantly in the development of the North as President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration,” he said. The minister challenged those “with contradictory view” to a debate, saying he would back his assertion with facts. “We have gone round a number of Northern states; we have been to Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina and we are now in Kaduna state, the political headquarters of the old Northern Region. “And in all the places we have gone, the evidence is very clear, contrary to those who believe that we are into partisan politics and not discussing the development of the north. “The evidence is clear that the Yar’Adua/Jonathan’s presidency, since 2007 has placed the development of the north in the uppermost part of its own attention,” he said. According to him, it is not only a northern president that can develop the region. Mr. Maku cited examples of projects executed under the Goodluck Jonathan administration as typical example that there was no discrimination in the running of the administration. “It is not true that only people from the north can develop this region, and at any rate it is no longer possible for the leaders of the country to come only from the north. “Nigeria has changed, today the story is different. The Presidency will go to every part of Nigeria, whether we like it or not. “And the earlier the north recognises the reality and plans its development so that whoever is there, let us go with our agenda that person will attend to us. “Power will reside only in one part of the country, is history. It will not happen because Nigeria has changed, awareness has come.” He reiterated the commitment of the federal government to develop every part of the country. He listed some of the major projects undertaken by the Jonathan administration as the dredging of River Niger, construction of bridges, dams and ports, as well as the revitalisation of the rail line and education infrastructure. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/151240-jonathan-best-thing-since-to-happen-to-northern-nigeria-since-gowon-maku.html

ABUJA— Indication emerged last night that the House of Representatives would not change its position on the $79 per barrel as the oil benchmark for the 2014 budget. Findings by Vanguard revealed that the Presidency was upset with the resolve by a majority of the lawmakers to ensure that the $75 oil benchmark being proposed by the Federal Government did not see the light of the day. It was learnt that in a bid to checkmate the stiff opposition to the $75 per barrel being tabled by the government, some lawmakers loyal to the Presidency had been trying to lobby their colleagues to support their position. The lobby, however, appears to have failed to sway the majority, Vanguard was told last night. A member of the National Assembly leadership confirmed, yesterday, that the lawmakers were not ready to go below the $79 per barrel benchmark. The lawmaker said that it would be wrong for the people that were elected by Nigerians to accept something that was inimical to their progress and well being because it was being proposed by the President. The source said: “The plot to recruit sympathisers of the Presidency to talk to us concerning the oil benchmark has failed woefully because the protagonists of $75 per barrel cannot justify what they will do with the excess funds arising from rising oil price which at all times is above $100 per barrel. On $100,000 bribe “It was when they failed to impress their logic of stagnation on us that they went to town with the allegation that the Presidency bribed us with $ 100,000 each. “But they have forgotten that we are not children who can easily be hoodwinked. “Now, if the Presidency claims it gave us the money they are talking about, how come that we insist that the oil benchmark must remain at $79 per barrel? “Let me assure all Nigerians that even if the Presidency gives us the money today, we won’t soft-pedal on the $ 79 benchmark,” the official added. When contacted, the spokesman for the House, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, said those peddling the rumour of $ 100,000 bribe were agents of blackmail, out to cause disaffection among the members and derail them from serving Nigerians. Mohammed pointed out that no amount of blackmail and intimidation would sway the lawmakers from doing what is right and in the interest of the people that elected them. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/reps-jonathan-accept-79-benchmark-forget-2014-budget-2/

Apparently leaving no stone unturned in their bid to clinch political positions in the 2015 general elections, politicians from all walks of life are now trooping daily to a prophet on a mountain in Kaduna to seek power to win elections. They go to the mountain at dusk under the cover of night for prayers and blessings for smooth sail in the general elections, leaving at dawn after a hectic all-night prayer session. The holy mountain, located off Patrick IbrahimYakowa Way in the Eastern flank of Kaduna metropolis, is a beehive of activities, particularly on Fridays when people go there to seek deliverance during vigil. This much was disclosed by the General Overseer of Christ’s Vision Ministries, Rev Samuel Taiwo Deji, who told Saturday Sun in a chat that he has so far spent three years, living on the mountain, all alone as directed by God to deliver and heal people who are suffering from one problem or the other. Reverend Deji, 59, who is a Professor of theology in Christian education, said he decided to name the mountain, Jesus Mountain, “because nobody comes here without receiving one miracle or the other”. According to the Ekiti State- born man of God: “Politicians from every part of the country come to me on this mountain; they keep vigil here, praying to God for blessings in the next elections and other blessings in their lives. “They normally leave at dawn after the vigil, and I have assured them that their prayers have been answered by God, but warned them that political party differences will cause bias against the commoners, and, therefore, they should work for the sole interest of the common people and the unity of the country. “I always encourage politicians to come here for deliverance because all of them are under heavy spiritual attack. In fact, I advise that President Goodluck Jonathan, even the American President, Barack Obama should come to this mountain for prayers, and they will meet the Lord. “I am not a prophet of doom, so I cannot say that 2015 elections will be bloody, and interestingly enough, God has not revealed it to me that it will be bloody. If God has revealed to anybody that the election will be bloody, my duty here on the mountain is to cancel such looming doom in the name of Jesus”. However, speaking with an aura of confidence and total belief in the efficacy of his prayers and visions, Prophet Deji, who is married with seven children, said the first one year he stayed on the mountain, he was tormented by wild animals, particularly lions and snakes. He, however, disclosed that like the biblical Daniel in the lion’s den, he was never hurt by any of the wild animals, adding that on several occasions, scorpions have invaded his resting place, a container, on the mountain. Apart, from the menace of reptiles and wild animals, he said hoodlums also invaded the place each time he was away, carting away some of his personal belongings in the day time. “I want to tell you that I have so far spent three years on this mountain, but the first one year was full of challenges, a lion confronted me here, focusing its eyes on me as if it is halogen light, it walked away. I don’t have gun, God is my gun. “Also, snakes, scorpions and other reptiles entered my resting place and clothes, but they did not harm me. “Apart from these animals, sometimes bad boys whom I will call hoodlums come here to loot my resting place, remove my valuables like mattress, handsets among other things. But may God forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” At the time of having this interview with the prophet, our correspondent met some people who came for deliverance as well as to appreciate the man of God for the efficacy of his visions and prayers. One of them, Adebiyi Salami said: “I was down with unidentified illness and I had been to several hospitals, no solution, I couldn’t drive my car. But when I came to the mountain, I was healed, I can now drive my car. This is why I have come to appreciate the prophet”. For Martha Emmanuel, a mother of a child, “the prophet sees vision very well, his prayers are working, and he healed my child of headache with just a handkerchief”. Another worshipper, Charity Bature said: “This is my second week that I have been coming to the mountain. I am no longer worried about my problems because God has assured me through the man of God that my problems are over. I used to be too worried, but I am now relaxed”. John Toluwalase said: “God has been able to deliver me from a lot of challenges since I have been visiting the man of God on this mountain.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/exposed-kaduna-mountain-politicians-seek-power/

Members of the National Association of Parents Teachers Association, South West chapter, have threatened to embark on hunger strike if the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) failed to reconcile their differences soonest. Chairman of the association, Julius Olaribigbe, after inauguration of new executives of the Osun State chapter of the body in Osogbo, told newsmen that the current face-off between the Federal Government and ASUU was embarrassing to the nation. Lecturers in public universities have begun an indefinite strike since July 1 over non-implementation of an agreement they reached with the Federal Government in 2009. The universities have remained shut to academic programmes since then. And while the industrial dispute lingers, the Federal Government gave members of ASUU up till Monday next week to resume for work or consider themselves sacked, an ultimatum the ASUU described as laughable. But the PTA in the south West warned that “the over two million parents across the 36 states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will embark on a national hunger strike if this situation should continue”. Olaribigbe believes that the Federal Government needs to accede to ASUU demands in the interest of the students who are the country’s future leaders. He appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to constitute a committee to dialogue with ASUU to end the ongoing face-off between the two parties. “When two elephants fight, the grass will definitely suffer. This time around, it is the parents that are suffering. We are left with no other option than to appeal to the two parties to see reasons why the strike should end. But if the strike persists, we shall embark on hunger strike,” he added. Olaribigbe blamed the Federal Government for allowing the strike to reach the present level, stressing that government has a duty to ensure qualitative university education for all Nigerian children. Also on Thursday, Presiding Bishop of Victory International Church, Taiwo Adelakun, called on government to back down from its high horse and embrace diplomacy rather than the military approach towards resolving the crisis. Adelakun spoke at the press briefing at Rehoboth Cathedral of the Church at Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, to formally unveil the 2013 Rehoboth Festival holding next week under the theme, ‘The Lord of Host’. The clergyman, who announced that the proposed Dominion University to be owned by the Church would take off as soon it receives the final nod from the National Universities Commission (NUC), lamented that the continued closure of the nation’s universities due to the ASUU strike had compounded the problem in the sector. According to him, “there is a problem in the sector already and the non- resolution of the crisis is compounding the problem and this calls for the necessity for the two parties to come to terms on the need to resolve the matter in the interest of the country”. Chairman of ASUU, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) chapter, Olufunmilayo Ande, also spoke on Thursday, appealing to President Goodluck Jonathan not to allow some of those working with him to mislead him to drag Nigeria back to the dark days of “Abacha regime.” The don gave the advice while addressing members of the IAR&T ASUU after a procession organised to honour former National President of the union, late Professor Festus Iyayi, who died recently in a motor accident along Lokoja-Abuja road. Ande, the union’s Deputy Chairman, Adesina Tiamiyu, and Secretary, J. Olaide Saka, had led scores of the union members in the procession, after which they were addressed by the Chairman and the institute’s Executive-Director, James Alabi Adediran, who described Iyayi’s death as a great loss to Nigeria. The ASUU chairman argued that the struggle embarked upon by the union is a struggle to liberate the country’s public universities and the entire education sector, urging Jonathan to immediately honour government’s agreement with the union. Ande said since Nigeria currently claims to be running a democracy, the President should not adopt threat to force the striking ASUU members to go back to the classroom without the guarantee that the agreement reached with them will be honoured. Academic staff at the Edo State owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, on their part also on Thursday vowed to continue with the strike until government agreed to fulfil all the things that ASSU is asking for. The lecturers also called for the immediate sack of Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, over what they described as incompetence. They said Wike lacked the intellectual capabilities and competence to handle the education system in the country. They made their position known in a communiqué after an emergency meeting on Thursday. The communiqué signed by Chairman and the Secretary of ASUU-AAU chapter, Fred Esumeh and S. Omoikhoje, respectively, described the ultimatum by the Federal Government as unfortunate and ill conceived in a democratic rule. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/12/parents-threaten-hunger-strike-ASUU/

Aviation Minister, Mrs. Stella Oduah, has declared that the Nigeria Aerotropolis project will generate an estimated N100 billion annually for the country. She also disclosed that the United State, China, Turkey and other European countries have shown interest in the Aerotropolis project. The Minister said that the project will provide at least 10 million jobs for Nigerians, especially the youth, in the first two years of its take-off. The Minister spoke during the Public Hearing organised by the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee investigating the FCT Land Swap in Abuja. The Federal Ministry of Aviation is participating in the land swap for the Abuja Aerotropolis project. The minister explained that the projects which will be sited in Abuja and other major international airports across the country, has a value chain with the potential to transform the Nigerian economy and the living standards of the rural farmers through perishable cargo exports. Explaining further, she said that the initiative is private-sector driven with 20 per cent equity holding by government through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), adding that value chains would span the agricultural, health, manufacturing, culture and tourism sectors of the economy. Already, she said investors from Nigeria, the USA, China, Turkey and other European countries have embraced the initiative and that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has endorsed the Abuja Aerotropolis for which documentation is being finalised for the land acquisition. Oduah further disclosed that that the FCT has already incorporated the Aerotropolis project into its development master plan. She equally allayed fears that compensation will not be paid on the land acquired, saying while the land would be acquired at the going commercial value, all due compensation would also be paid promptly. However, she stressed that the greatest compensation Nigerians will get from the initiative will come in the form of millions of jobs that will be created for the teeming unemployed youth population. According to Oduah, ‘’The development of airport cities (aerotropolis) is a 21`st century phenomenon that is gaining ground all over the world. It is no longer fashionable to have an International Airport without the support facilities and amenities such as shopping arcades, hotels, packaging industries, Residential Estates, modern airline offices and recreational facilities. The proposed aerotropolis will definitely boost the Nigerian economy and generate the much-needed employment for our teeming youth” http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/12/aerotropolis-will-generate-n100b-annually-oduah/

Following the envisaged mass defection by federal lawmakers to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), as a fallout of last week’s dumping of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by four governors, the battle for the control of the House of Representatives may have begun. Daily Sun gathered that Speaker Aminu Tambuwal is under pressure to resign over fears that some of his colleagues, especially members of the PDP, who are not interested in defecting to APC, may pass a vote of no confidence in him as well as frustrate his leadership of the House. It was gathered that the lawmakers after Tambuwal would, among other reasons, accuse him of masterminding the insistence of $79 oil benchmark for 2014 budget projection. Sources revealed that some legislators who have enlisted in anti- Tambuwal project have been meeting and trying to enlist as many supporters as possible. It was gathered that they are working with some chieftains of the PDP. Daily Sun gathered that his supporters are also preparing to defend him, especially over the oil benchmark, since they have the support of governors of their states. The lawmakers are backed by their governors, who also encouraged and influenced them to support a $79 benchmark because of the cash crunch that lesser benchmark would cause the states. Many of the states are having financial problem owing to a drop in revenue allocation, which has made it impossible for them to pay salaries and meet other obligations. Meanwhile, it was gathered that the main anxiety is that there may be commotion in the House, if some lawmakers trying to pass a no confidence vote in Tambuwal. Some lawmakers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed fears that if there’s commotion in the House, security agents may take over the National Assembly, causing the House to adjourn sine dine . “We are not afraid that they would succeed in passing a vote of no confidence in Tambuwal. Our fear is that in an attempt to do so, there may be commotion in the House, which could give those after the Speaker to send in security agents, just as it happened in Rivers State,” one of the lawmakers stated. He contended that if this happens, it may be impossible for the House to meet and perform its functions, adding: “I suspect that the government is afraid that if APC takes control of the House, it would be difficult for it to get approvals on certain things. Therefore, they may not want the House to sit.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/tambuwal-pressure-resign/

A woman, identified simply as Mrs. Maxwell, has been arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting her daughter, Blessing, with a hot pressing iron. Blessing, a primary three student of the Lagos Model Nursery and Primary School, Ikeja GRA, was allegedly assaulted last Monday by her mother for licking the baby’s food. PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident came to light after a neighbour, who lived within the Police College Barracks, Ikeja, with the Maxwells, allegedly called the authorities of the LMNPS to complain about Blessing’s condition. Blessing’s father is said to be a police corporal. A source within the school, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “It was last Friday that we got the anonymous call. At the time, two of Blessing’s younger siblings were in school, so we called them aside and asked after Blessing. “At first, they were both scared that they would get into trouble with their mother if they told the truth but they eventually opened up and said their mother had used a hot pressing iron on Blessing.” The Head Teacher of the school, accompanied by some other employees of the school, was said to have visited Blessing at home. It was learnt that on arriving at the Maxwells’ house, Blessing was seen sitting outside their flat, sporting burn marks all over her body. The source said, “We tried to question Blessing about what happened to her, but she was scared of her mother. Eventually, we went into the house and confronted the mother, but she lied that hot water had mistakenly poured on Blessing. “When we asked if Blessing had received medical attention for her injuries, her mother got annoyed and dragged Blessing into the house. She then refused to answer more questions. Since it was a police barracks, we thought it wise to leave quietly before things got out of hand. “The most painful aspect of the whole issue is that despite Blessing’s wounds, their neighbour told us that she had been carrying out house chores like before. From what I saw, that girl is so injured that I didn’t expect that she would be able to come to school for the rest of the term. Not one of us guessed that she was being abused at home.” PUNCH Metro gathered that both mother and child were picked up by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation after the school authorities alerted the ministry. Blessing was said to have been picked up by a Lagos State Ambulance Service bus. When our correspondent contacted the Child Director, WAPA, Mrs. Fadairo, she said, “I cannot talk at this time. We are at the hospital and Blessing is in critical condition.” Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached for comment. http://www.punchng.com/metro/mother-burns-daughter-with-hot-iron/
