LAPSES OF NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC)SCHEME; its effects and possible solutions It has come to our notice that our university's graduates as far back as mid 2015 are still rotting at home without being mobilized for NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC). With the claimed financial incapacitation by NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC)SCHEME back in early March, 2016 which delayed the Batch A stream II till June, 2016 before they were eventually mobilized. This development had indirectly forced Prospective Corp Members for Batch B to accept the fate of going during November, 2016 mobilization exercise. All things being equal, the expected Batch B timetable surfaced and processing were joyously going as planned until October 4, 2016 when NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC)SCHEME gave all Corps Producing Institutions directives to slash their Prospective Corps Member into ratio 1:3 as the scheme could only cater for one third of each institution. Let us cite this illustration, with the 1300slots allocated to Obafemi Awolowo University with the university having close to 5000 Prospective Corp Members (Affiliated school, Adeyemi College of Education inclusive). _What is the fate of the rest over 3500 PCMs?_ Staying at home till next year again? This is how it affects every other institutions across the nation. A country that does not take her youth very serious is sitting on a gun powder and the repercussion is what we are seeing all around as a security threat such as Boko Haram terrorism, Avengers, Kidnapping and the likes. Also, these graduates are being deprived the opportunity of having access to various job opportunities ongoing in the country. _Hence, they are stagnant at home as well as becoming liabilities to their parents after several years as undergraduates._ _This also has negative impact on the progress of our economy._ *Way forward:* When the purpose of a scheme is not known, abuse is inevitable. NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC)SCHEME is no longer serving it's purpose. It is now seen as a medium of adding another two to three years in addition to years spent as undergraduate. In view of this, we call on Federal Government, National Assembly, House of Representatives, Non Governmental Organizations and other well meaning Nigerians to intensively look into this and find a swift long lasting solution to the delay this scheme is causing. The Federal Government, as a matter of urgency should attend to whatsoever is the reason behind slashing the number of Prospective Corp Members in such a callous ratio. It is also wise to say that with the frequent various complaints as regard NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC)SCHEME, Federal government should scrap the scheme and a full year allowances be paid to all graduates so that they could use it to start a manageable new life instead of searching for unavailable job. Conclusively, no job should request for NYSC discharge certificate/letter as a yardstick during recruitment exercise. #MobilizeAllOrScrapNYSC |
