Crime › Specialist Robbers:they Rob, Detain And Rape Female Victims___ A MUST Read Story by jericco1(op): 9:57am On Nov 24, 2013
The cup of iniquity of two alleged robbers in Edo State spilled over lately when the photographic memory of their victim became their nemesis as the woman led the police to their den.
Until they were nabbed by men of the Edo State Police Command, the two suspects identified as Augustine Ogbebor and Lucky Ekhator detained and raped their female victims for at least two days.

Their cookie began to crumble when they robbed a woman who was returning from the market at about 7.00pm in Benin City. They abducted the woman and took her to Ekhator’s home in the St. Saviour area of Benin City where she was robbed of her Blackberry handset and the sum of N28,000. Then they proceeded to rape and detain her for two days before she was released.
Not willing to sweep the ugly incident under the carpet, she summoned courage and filed a report at a police station. She gave a full description of the suspects to the police.
Acting on this information, a police swat team raided the house and arrested Ogbebor and Ekhator.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Foluso Adebanjo, who narrated the incident to Sunday Sun, further revealed that the two suspects had for long been involved in several armed robberies noting that they always detained and raped their female victims. He said the suspects made useful confessions on their involvement in several armed robberies. .

Somewhat filled with regret that their bubble had burst, one of the suspects, Ogbebor, who hails from Benin City said “We didn’t know that she could identify the house where we raped and detained her for two days. It was there that the police came to arrest us.”
Ogbebor also recalled another incident involving a woman they robbed as she was returning from church adding that their effort was a dry run as they did not get any money from her.

“We abducted the woman thinking that she had money with her. It was afterwards we found out she only had a bible. We then took her to Ekhator’s house where we raped and detained her for two days before releasing her.
Sunday Sun gathered that their evil business of detaining and raping female victims began in 2012 after cutting their teeth as robbers.

“We started with robbery and later decided to be raping our victims and detaining them in our house for at least two days,” Ogbebor said.
While corroborating Ogbebor, Ekhator however said “We didn’t use guns, we only used a knife to scare our victims into submission before robbing them of their personal effects.”
Adebanjo said the two suspects who were arrested on October 5, 2013 would soon appear in court to answer for their crimes after investigation is concluded

Politics › Super Star Minister Diezani Disappears In London, Upsets Other Ministers by jericco1(op): 9:33am On Nov 24, 2013
At least nine Nigerian ministers were embittered by what they described as the nonchalant and disrespectful attitude of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the just concluded Honorary International Investor's Council (HIIC) in London.
The ministers were irked by Ms. Alison-Madueke's disappearing act in London.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who led a delegation to London, had ordered his cabinet members to attend a meeting with Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom. But the Petroleum Minister took off on her own mission, without telling any of her colleagues her whereabouts. Her action angered other ministers who saw her behavior as a display of reckless indifference to and disregard for her colleagues.
According to a minister who spoke to SaharaReporters, he and his colleagues discovered, after the parley with Nigerians, that Ms. Alison-Madueke had arranged for Mr. Jonathan to visit some places in London with her. He added that the Petroleum Minister and Mr. Jonathan did not return until past midnight.
Mr. Jonathan had fallen violently ill last Thursday and had to be hospitalized last Thursday in London. The president did not attend the meeting with Nigerians either, as he ended his participation at the HIIC yesterday.
"Not only did Diezani not attend the meeting [with Nigerians], she also did not offer explanations for her absence or apologize to her colleagues for her non-appearance," the minister told SaharaReporters.
Our source added that Ms. Alison-Madueke also did not attend the first day of the investment council events as she spent most of her time at the King Edward VII Hospital in Westminster where the president was treated. "The Minister of Petroleum Resources did not attend the inaugural meeting of the HIIC as she knew that President Jonathan was not going to be able to make it," said the source.
When contacted today a source at the Petroleum ministry said the minister had a different investment meeting in London with investors from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who are interested in getting oil blocks they intend to use in making two major refineries function to full capacity.
However, the assertion is at variance with recent announcement by the federal government, which announced plans to sell Nigerian refineries.
SaharaReporters learned that Ms. Alison-Madueke was one of the last persons with President Jonathan before he suddenly took ill and had to be hospitalized. Our cabinet source said that the Petroleum Minister did not alert her colleagues about President Jonathan's hospitalization until very late.
In order to forestall an embarrassing situation, presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, was asked to quickly draft a release informing the public that Mr. Jonathan had fallen ill. The release did not disclose the nature of illness or the hospital where the president was hospitalized.
Yesterday, as Mr. Jonathan attended the HIIC, Ms. Alison-Madueke arrived late at the venue and left early, only to disappear again with the president as other ministers met with Nigerians and labored hard to explain the policies of the Jonathan administration.
President Jonathan remains in London today, but has no public activity planned for him, according to a Presidency source. He is scheduled to return to Nigeria tomorrow.

Christianity Etc › CAN Is Political, Oritsejafor Is Not A Christian Leader But A Politician! by jericco1(op): 9:11am On Nov 24, 2013
Primate Babatunde Ayodele, General Overseer of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Lagos, has slammed the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, for operating as “Christian politician”, rather than a Christian leader he was expected to be.
Speaking to Vanguard over several national issues, the cleric said CAN is nothing to write home about as the association is now political.

“Truth is bitter but you have to say it! CAN is political! Ayo Oritsejafor is not operating as CAN but as a Christian politician. CAN is blindfolded and there is no leadership in it. That’s why we’re getting so many things wrong in Christendom.

“CAN doesn’t know how many churches we have in the country, it has not created any youth empowerment or pastors’ empowerment. CAN should be scrapped.

“Christianity is not how rich you are but how well you’ve been able to touch the lives of others. CAN should employ not less than 20,000 youths and should do something about women, widows.

“The truth is: Ayo Oritsejafor is a politician and not a pastor.”
Primate Ayodele said further that Oritsejafor never honours invitation from white garment churches.
Wondering why, the cleric asked,

“Is he God to say a church is not genuine? Any man who does that is not a pastor! It’s not your right to say you are holy!

“But the Bible says God has blessed us with the spirit of discernment…
Can Ayo see? Is he a prophet? How can he tell me his spirit discerns?”
He rated white garment churches to be among the best worldwide.

“White garment churches are among the best worldwide! That’s why you see influential men and women going to them for prayers! Why don’t they remain in their Pentecostal churches?

“Even pastors from Pentecostal churches go to white garment churches to consult privately and get spiritual powers.

“I am a godfather to many Pentecostal churches but I have no godfather! God is my only father in the Lord!”
Primate Ayodele submitted that CAN needs change of leadership.
“We need somebody who is more vibrant as CAN leader,” he said.

Crime › Evil Spirit Pushed Me To Kill My Kinsmen –suspect by jericco1(op): 7:41am On Nov 24, 2013
A middle aged man, Joseph Emeka Okoro, who was arrested for murder by the police in Isu, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has blamed the crime on evil spirits.
Okoro, who was arrested for allegedly killing two of his kinsmen at Umuniko in Isu area of the state told the police that he was pushed by some evil spirits to commit the crime.
According to the police spokesman in the state, Mr. Chris Anyanwu, the suspect was arrested on November 14, 2013 after he attacked and killed two of his kinsmen; Peter Awoke and Sunday Agar with machete while they were working on their farms.
The police said two other victims, who sustained serious injuries from the attack, were currently lying critically ill in an undisclosed hospital.
Okoro confessed to the crime at the state police headquarters when the police paraded him saying he had been having the urge to kill before the incident.
The suspect claimed that he returned from Lagos two days before he committed the murder adding that any time the spirit came upon him, he would be restless.
He however pleaded that he had no intention to kill, but that the spirit keep on disturbing him until he saw the first man whom he killed and some others on whom he used the machete.
“I know those people that I killed, but I didn’t know why I killed them or when I did it. They are good people whom I have never had any quarrel with. I think an evil spirit possessed me.”
The suspect further explained that the manipulations of the evil spirit was further worsened by the effects of some hard drugs injected into his body by assassins hired by his former master in Lagos to kill him before he came back to his hometown.
While narrating his ordeal in the hands of his former master whom he claimed refused to settle him after years of meritorious service, Okoro said the man instead hired assassins to kill him.
“Whenever this spirit came upon me, it will just be like I was mad. That was worsened by the effects of the drugs I was injected with by some people hired by my former master to kill me. I have never seen such powerful drugs in my life. I was given up to 48 injections.”
Okoro claimed that his former master came after him even when he escaped to a white garment church and told the church members that he was mad.
“But while I was there , I asked to make a phone call and they obliged me. After the phone call, church members started wondering how a mad man was able to know the numbers to call and discuss coherently.
“I sold my phone for N5,000 to be able to raise money to come back home. I have never killed before; even one of the people I killed was my in-law.”
Meanwhile, PPRO Anyanwu said it took the efforts of youths in the area and a team of policemen from Onicha Divisional Police Station to arrest the suspect, who took to his heels after committing the crime.
A community leader in the area, Hon. Ogbonnaya Igboke who spoke to Sunday Sun regretted the incident, saying that he could not comprehend how a right thinking man would use a machete to kill fellow human beings for no reason.
He further explained that bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Onicha General Hospital mortuary adding that efforts were being made to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order in the community.
Meanwhile, Okoro has been charged to a magistrate court sitting in Abakaliki, which remanded him in prison custody. The court then adjourned the case to January 13, 2014.

Politics › I’ve Handed Over My Father’s Kidnappers To God – Bayelsa Commissioner by jericco1(op): 10:07am On Nov 23, 2013
Bayelsa State Commissioner for Tourism Development, Nelson Belief whose 78 years old father, Pa Uroh Nelson Tempurah was kidnapped in the early hours of Wednesday at Akassa on the Atlantic fringe of Brass local government area by armed men yesterday said he has handed over everything to God.
Saturday Vanguard learnt that three days after the kidnap incident which jostled the serene coastal settlement of Minibeleu in Akassa, the whereabouts of the old man is unknown while the kidnappers were yet to establish contact with their victim’s family.
The continued silence from the kidnappers, a security source told our correspondent is a tactical ploy to put their victim’s family on the edge with a view to demand huge ransom whenever they choose to contact them.
”They might also be playing safe by refusing to contact the family for fear of exposing their location,” the source added.

But son of the kidnapped septuagenarian, Nelson Belief in a telephone chat told our correspondent that though the kidnappers were yet to contact him or any members of his family, they (Belief family) have handed over everything to God.
He prayed God to cause confusion among the kidnappers to release his father unconditionally just as he said the security agencies are working round the clock to ensure his rescue.

According to him, his father left behind his mobile when he was seized and forcefully taken away from his country home by his captors, a development that might have been responsible for the current state of incommunicado.
Belief who sounded optimistic about God’s divine interference in the matter said, “though everything is blank and no contact is yet made, the security agencies are doing their job.”

”My father was not with his phone when he was abducted. God will not allow them to kill him. I have handed over everything to the Almighty God and I pray that He will cause confusion among his kidnappers to set him free unconditionally.”

Contacted, the state police public relations officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe said the police are on the trail of the kidnappers.

”We have deployed a crack team of operatives from the anti kidnapping squad to strategic locations in the creek to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous and rescue their victim,” he said.

Nairaland General › Tragedy As 30 Die In Benue Road Mishap by jericco1(op): 2:42am On Nov 23, 2013
No fewer than 30 persons have been reportedly killed in auto accidents across Benue state which also left over 100 persons sustaining varying degree of injuries in the last three weeks.
The Zonal Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in charge of Zone 4, Assistant Corps Marshall Yakubu Attah disclosed this yesterday at the inauguration of the north central zone chapter of the Federal Roads Committee on Surveillance and Action Against Road Abuses, FERCSARA, in Makurdi.
Attah attributed most of the mishaps that claimed innocent lives of motorists and commuters to “the abuse of roads in the state through illegal construction of speed bumps, cutting of major roads and making of bonfire and erection of illegal checkpoints on the roads.”
Earlier in his speech, while inaugurating the committee, a member of the Board of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, representing the north central zone, Hon. Samuel Gwomna disclosed that the federal government would soon set up mobile courts to try the culprits of road abuses across the country.
Gwomna said, “when established, the courts would go a long way in checking activities that lead to unwarranted road mishaps and loss of innocent lives across the country.
While urging road users to strictly abide by the rules governing the use of roads in the country, Gwomna said, “those behind the erection of speed bumps, cutting of our roads and the erection of illegal check points on roads across the country should also desist or be prepared to face the wrath of the law.”
In his speech, the National Chairman of FERCSARA, Mr. Kelvin Onuoha lamented that “the country is daily recording increasing deaths on the highways due mainly to destruction and abuses of our roads by communities where the roads are situated and road users alike.
Also speaking, the north central zone chairman of FERCSARA and zonal coordinator of FERMA, Mr. Robinson Ibe said the inauguration of the committee was timely stressing that it would help the government check the abuses and deaths recorded on major highways in the country.
He added, “this committee will henceforth regularly traverse all federal roads in the zone to ensure that our roads are no longer abused in any form and by so doing check the increasing road mishaps in the country.”

Family › police, SSS Helped Chime Lock Up Wife – Falana by jericco1(op): 2:29am On Nov 23, 2013
A human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, has identified officials of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security Service as also culpable in the alleged detention of the wife of the Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime, for four months.
Falana made the allegation at the public presentation of a book titled ‘Honour for sale’ by Major Debo Bashorun, in Lagos, on Friday.
He said, “I have discovered that the police and SSS helped the governor in confining his wife in a room for four months incommunicado.”
The news of the alleged illegal detention of the wife of the Governor broke earlier this month with Falana subsequently saying Clara had requested his intervention in the matter.
However, following Falana’s open declaration, Governor Sullivan Chime held a press conference in company of Clara’s relatives and a doctor said to be treating her, denying the allegation. Chime claimed he had only kept Clara indoors due to her ill health.
At the event, Falana, however, condemned the presence of security operatives at Chime’s press conference, describing the connivance of the police with the ruling class as a threat to democracy and rule of law..
He said, “The police officers were also at the press conference when the governor admitted that he has turned the government house into a psychiatric ward.”
Prominent lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Itse Sagay, the widow of late Gani Fawehinmi, Ganiat, and anti-corruption crusader, Debo Adeniran, among others, have described the new book as an insightful attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of the late publisher ofNewswatch Magazine, Dele Giwa, via a parcel bomb.
Sagay, who chaired the event, noted that the author had provided additional insight into the killing of Giwa in terms of the circumstances and the dramatis personae.
“Since the saga of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s prosecution of this matter, two times from the High Court to the Supreme Court, we have not had such a detailed examination of what happened. He did a legal analysis of the incident and then, prepared the necessary information for prosecution. We still have all those details.
“But this is the latest insight into the murder of Dele Giwa. It is not only informative, but shows that though anyone who commits a heinous crime of this sort may get away with it, in terms of not being physically punished, his reputation will forever be soiled and what history will make of him will be very damaging,” he said.
Describing the role of the judiciary at the time Giwa’s death occurred, Sagay said there was evidence that its power to act on the matter was definitely curtailed by then Federal Military Government.
“The Supreme Court said late Fawehinmi had a right to bring a private prosecution, since everybody is everybody else’s keeper in Nigeria, unlike other parts of the world. Immediately he did that, a second round of challenges was started. A new set of judges were appointed to the Supreme Court.
“By the time Fawehinmi returned to the Supreme Court, the new set of judges had reversed what the court had done, which was totally illegal. But, since the action was being backed by the physical power of a military government, there was nothing anyone could do,” he said.

‘Iyayi Was Assassinated By Expert Shooters In The Cover Of Nigerian Intelligence’ — JAF
The Joint Action Front (JAF) has accused the government of assassinating former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Festus Iyayi who died recently in a motor accident involving the convoy of Kogi State governor.
The group said Iyayi’s killing was master-minded by the government the attack was carried out by expert shooters under the guise of Nigerian Intelligence.
In a statement signed by its president, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, JAF said the death of Iyayi was connected to the on-going ASUU strike, adding that his death was questionable.
According to the group, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Sole Administrator of the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Dr Paul Amodu’s official explanation of Iyayi’s cause of death which they say is due to the accident did not explain did not explain the piercing of his heart by a strange object.
The statement reads in part:
“JAF wishes to alert Nigerians and the international community that Comrade Festus Iyayi was murdered by operatives of the Nigerian state, contrary to the widely reported claims that he died in the bus accident of November 12, 2013 along Lokoja – Abuja road due to the recklessness of the Kogi State governor’s convoy.
“JAF has every reason to believe that the murder of Comrade Iyayi was connected with the on-going Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike to compel the federal government to, not only honour the Collective Agreements it reached with it in 2009, but also to make government responsible to adequately fund public education against the dictates of its puppeteers – the IMF and World Bank.
“We strongly believe that the assassination of Comrade Iyayi was carried out by expert shooters in the cover of the Nigerian Intelligence, reminiscence of the state murder of Dele Giwa in 1986 and Kudirat Abiola in 1996”,the statement said.
JAF added that Iyayi’s death is a wakeup call to all Nigerians to struggle for a better society where people’s lives are respected and preserved

Nairaland General › SSS Uncovers Boko Haram Cell In Kogi State. by jericco1(op): 6:48am On Nov 21, 2013
The State Security Service (SSS) today in Abuja paraded five suspected Boko Haram members alleged to have planned deadly attacks on Igala, Kogi State.
Among the suspects were Dr. Mohammad Nazeef Yunus, an Assistant Lecturer in Arabic and Islamic Studies at Kogi State University. He was said to be the Spiritual Leader and Coordinator for Boko Haram in the State, and the leader of the gang.
Nazeef, who was born in Idah, Kogi State, attended the Arabic Central Primary School in that town, and El-Kanemi College, Maiduguri. He also studied at the Islamic School, University of Medina, in Saudi Arabia and served in the National Youth Service Corp in 1995 at Al-Iman Secondary School, Dogon Dutse, in Jos.
Nazeef earned a Masters Degree in Arabic from the University of Jos. Just last year, he earned a Ph.D in Islamic Studies from Kogi State University.
Also arrested by the SSS were Umar Musa (Instructor), Mustapha Yusuf, Ismaila Yunusa, Mohammed Nasir, and Ibrahim Isa.
SSS spokesperson Marilyn Ogar said the suspects were planning to carry out an attack on Igala Land but were arrested at Zuba white mosque near Abuja on their way to Zambisa in Maiduguri for training. They were also going to install Sharia in Kogi State.
Umar Musa (Head of Operations/Instructor) confessed publicly that he was employed by Boko Haram as Instructor after he lost his job with the state teaching hospital, and was taken to the Sambisa camp of the sect for a week’s training on handling weapons. He said he was deployed to the education unit of the camp as Munzi (instructor) and placed on a monthly salary of N50,000. He further stated that he and Yusuf later returned from Sambisa and re-united with Nazeef in Kogi State where they plotted to carry out violent attacks in Igala land. He maintained that Nazeef appointed him the Head of Operations and munzir.
Mustapha Yusuf (Armourer/Chief Courier) and Ismaila Abdulazeez (Foot soldier) confessed that that Nazeef was their teacher who teaches them Jihad and Islamic Sharia.
Ogar told newsmen that the suspects will soon be charged to court.

Politics › University Lecturer Who Recruits For Boko Haram Paraded By The DSS by jericco1(op): 6:14am On Nov 21, 2013
Dr. Muhammed Nazeef Yunus
A university lecturer, who allegedly acts as Recruitment Co-ordinator of the Boko Haram sect and four other members have been arrested, as they were plotting to launch violent attacks in Igalaland, Kogi State.
Parading the five suspected members of the terror group in Abuja, the DSS said the Spiritual Leader and Recruitment Coordinator of the sect, Dr Muhammad Nazeef Yunus, was until his arrest, an assistant lecturer in the Department of Islamic Studies, Kogi State University, Ayingba in Kogi State.
The DSS said the Yunus taught Arabic and Islamic Studies at the university.
Other alleged members of the sect paraded were Umar Musa, Head of Operations/Instructor; Munzir Mustapha Yusuf, a.k.a Habib, Armourer/Chief courier; Ismail Abdulazeez, foot soldier and Ibrahim Isa, a.k.a ‘One in town’ another foot soldier.
The Deputy Director, Public Relations, Department of State Service, Marilyn Ogar, who paraded the suspected Boko Haram members said their plot was botched when two members of the sect who were on their way to Borno State for training in weapons handling were arrested at Zuba, on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
According to Ogar, “the determination of security forces to rid Nigeria of all acts of terror has continued to yield favourable results as this Service uncovered a Boko Haram cell in Kogi State.
All the paraded suspects, except the varsity lecturer, explained to the media the level of their involvement in the Boko Haram insurgency and the plan to attack Igala.
Dr. Yunus, however, feigned ignorance of the planned attacks, insisting that his involvement was a frame-up.
“My Islamic preaching had always been against the activities of the Boko Haram sects, but I was shocked when the other suspects insisted that I was a member and the one that recruited them into the sect. I have never been a member of Boko Haram for one minute in my life, I even preach against them,” he said.
One of the suspects, Mustapha Yusuf who was allegedly trained at Sambisa camp in Maiduguri, Borno State said “the university lecturer appointed me as the armourer and chief courier of the group and handed two AK-47 rifles with 30 rounds of live ammunition to me for safe keeping after I returned to Kogi State shortly after military invasion of our camp in Borno State”.
The other two foot soldiers also confessed that Dr. Yunus indoctrinated them into the Boko Haram sect by preaching to them when they approached him to help them secure admission into the Kogi State University, Ayingba.
In her briefing, the DSS spokeswoman enjoined all Nigerians to be vigilant. “We want to enjoin all Nigerians to be vigilant and continue to cooperate with security agencies through the provision of useful information of suspicious activities within their immediate environment.
“The war on terror is still on. This Service in collaboration with other security agencies will not rest on their oars until we rid our society of all criminality. We must all remember that we are not terrorists, we are Nigerians.”
Ogar also urged parents who send their children for Islamic teaching after school, to be very careful of the people they choose as their teachers. http://www.informationng.com/2013/11/university-lecturer-who-recruits-for-boko-haram-paraded-by-the-dss.html

Poisonous Gas Kills Grandmother, Grandson, One Other In Ondo
An explosion in Araromi Obu area of Ondo State has led to the death of a grandmother, her grandson and one other person, with at least 10 others sustaining injuries.
The explosion was said to have emanated from the facility of the state water corporation located at Araromi Obu, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The deceased, according to sources, they might have inhaled the chemicals that escaped from one of the cylinders that exploded at about 11.30 pm, Tuesday.
People who went to ascertain what was wrong when they heard a loud noise from the explosion at the Water Corporation, inhaled the gas that escaped from the cylinder.
It was gathered that many of them, after inhaling the poisonous gas, started itching on their faces and felt uncomfortable.
Among those who inhaled the poisonous gas was a seven year-old-boy simply identified as Isaac, his grandmother and one other person. They were taken to the General Hospital in Okitipupa for proper medical attention.

Gold Bars Worth N174m Found In Plane Toilet
Cleaners found a stash of 24 gold bars worth more than $US1.1 million hidden in an airplane lavatory after a flight from Bangkok landed in eastern India, officials said.
The plane, belonging to private carrier Jet Airways, was being cleaned at Kolkata airport after a trip from the eastern city of Patna. Indian media reported the plane had been travelling from Bangkok.
“The cleaning staff of the airport were going though their routine duties and found two bags in the toilets of the plane,” said director of the airport B.P. Mishra.
The 24 one-kilogram gold bars “have not been claimed by anyone. No arrest has been made,” senior customs official R.S. Meena said.
Meena estimated the value of the haul at about 70 million rupees, or $US1.1 million.
India, which rivals China as the world’s biggest gold consumer, has witnessed a sharp rise in smuggling since import duties were hiked three times this year to dampen demand for the precious metal.
Gold is hugely popular in India, especially during religious festivals and wedding seasons, and is the second-biggest contributor after oil to India’s massive current account deficit – the broadest measure of trade.
The government has been seeking to reduce gold demand and narrow its deficit by hiking bullion import duties.
Indians also buy gold in the form of jewellery, bars and coins as a hedge against inflation.
“This is the fifth (suspected gold smuggling) incident in the past one month,” said BP Sharma, director of Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport.
“Smuggling of gold through the airport has risen” as the hike in the import duty of gold has made the metal costlier, Mr Sharma said.
Last month, intelligence officials recovered gold worth 95 million rupees from the toilet of a plane after it landed in the southern city of Chennai en route to New Delhi from Dubai.
Four Sri Lankan nationals were held on smuggling charges.
In August, customs officials seized smuggled gold worth 11 million rupees from a passenger travelling from Singapore to the Indian capital.
Thirty-one gold bars were found in specially-designed pockets in the suspect’s trousers.
In Kolkata, a 28-year-old man flying to India from Bangkok was recently arrested with gold bars concealed in large torchlights, officials said.
In another incident, a man travelling to India from Dubai was caught in Kolkata while trying to smuggle five gold bars in his body, they added.
