Three food vendors have been apprehended by members of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Network for allegedly cooking, preparing vultures and dead donkeys and selling them as chicken meat to the general public at the Tombia market Etegwe, Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State. They were handed over to men of the Akenfa Division, Bayelsa Police command. The food vendors who identified themselves as Doris, Finegirl, and Beauty, said they hail from Ughelli community, in Delta State. The women, who confessed to selling vulture meat and carcasses of donkeys to unsuspecting buyers, added that they imported the meats from neighbouring states into the state and sell at cheap and affordable prices to buyers, mostly those who own restaurants, bars and canteens. Speaking with reporters during a parade of the suspects, the Yenagoa coordinator of the Vigilante Network, Comrade Bunas Samuel, advised all Bayelsans to be on alert and be careful on what they consumed. He called on NAFDAC to live up to its responsibility and checkmate the activities of food hawkers. According to Samuel, the patrol team observed suspicious movement at the slaughter place, and trailed it. “To our greatest imagination, we saw about thirty dead vultures, all prepared to be placed inside a hot pot of boiling water, we called the attention of the police and handed the suspect over to them, before then, they confessed to us, that, they use dead meat bones to attract the vultures and then use chemicals to kill them, and they have been in this business for years, selling them to the public,” he said. Tarik was born with big hands but now they are so huge that local villagers believe he is cursed and call him "devil." He has also been refused admission to schools due to fear that he will scare other children. His father passed away and his family is unable to afford money to have him tested. His condition is undiagnosed, although doctors speculate that it may be Elephant Foot disease. Tarik is however optimistic that one day he will be cured. In an interview, he said: "I want to get rid of this condition. I want to become like other kids who go to school every day and play like normal kids. I see a hope that I will get normal hands." He lives with his brother Hargyan, who takes care of him and helps him perform various tasks such as eating, bathing and even putting on clothes. His family has appealed for help and is optimistic that medical science will change his condition for the better.
