Autos › Re: I'm Trying To Ship A Car To Nigeria From Us by jidody(m): 5:24am On Jan 06, 2008
Papa Browne,

Shipping a 40ft container from NJ would cost you about $6k and about $5k if you don't mind it going the longer route that could take up to 6 weeks. I suppose the cost from Baltimore would be the same.

If you have up to 4 cars to ship, the container is definitely your best option. You are fully assured of the safety of your goods and you can also load other items in it. It might cost a bit more when clearing the container though. RORO is cheaper to ship and also to clear if its just one car.

The 8 year rule is strictly enforced. The shipping companies would not even take the car. However, minivans or buses are except from this age restriction.

Young Digi,

RORO means Roll On Roll Off. You can either ship your car RORO or put it in a container. Our Lagos port is pretty safe these days so a lot of people do RORO except of course you have more than one car, like 4 cars where you could use a 40 foot container. Advantage to this is that you can also ship a lot of other items in the container. My email address is jidody@yahoo.com.

Sultan, the clearing process seems a lot easier and more straightforward these days, you only need someone to do the running around for you if you do not have the time. If you have the time, am sure you can hack it on your own through the clearing agency.

Yound Digi, a few answers

The ship takes approximately 2 weeks to arrive Lagos once it takes off from the US. What takes time is actually waiting for the next available ship. At times the wait time could be up to 1 month beacause there are so many people shipping to Nigeria now but you could get lucky. This does not stop you from doing the paper work with the shipping company and dropping the car at the port.

It costs about $1500 to ship if you are sending RORO. The charges just went up 1 Dec 07

The cost of clearing varies depending on the greed level of the clearing agent. I just cleared two 2001 Toyota Corollas for 220k each. I have a Naval Officer friend that does the clearing just in case you are interested

All things being equal, you do not really have to spend extra. Once you pay for your shipping in the US and you make the clearing money available to the clearing agent, the car should be at your doorstep in Lagos approximately 1 week after the ship arrives Lagos.

I would have to ask my clearing person how much it costs to clear the 2002 Grand Cherokee.

Take care
Properties › Re: Cost Of Borehole Drilling In Lagos by jidody(m): 3:35am On Jan 02, 2008
Average of about N200k in most parts of Lekki. That is just for the bore hole, you would still have to get the tank and other accessories
Autos › Re: True Or False? To Ship Car To Nigeria, Title Must Show Your Name. by jidody(m): 8:35pm On Jan 01, 2008
You do not need your name on the title. If you attempt changing the title to your name, you will have to pay sales taxes and all the other fees and since the title is useless in Nigeria, doing that is totally a waste. Just make sure you sign at the back as the buyer. I just shipped a couple of cars that way.

Family › Re: Joint Account With My Spouse? by jidody(m): 11:13am On Aug 28, 2007
I have a joint account with my wife even though we still maintain our separate individual accounts. Each month we transfer a fixed sum to the joint account and we remain at liberty to utilize what is left the way we feel after settling our recurrent bills.(We share the bills even though I naturally feel obligated to do more than she does). The joint account has really helped us in undertaking major projects that are beneficial to the family. Additionaly, we constantly remind ourselves on the need to be modest in our spendings and live within our means, this has helped to boost our money management amd thus the love and peace in our home.

My prayer for the singles is that they meet and marry those that will think more of "us" than ''me" when married and this really has to be reciprocal for it to work.

Business › Re: Bad Experiences You've Had With Your Banks? by jidody(m): 12:23pm On Jun 16, 2007
Union Bank Falomo Branch. I went to withdraw my salary that had been paid in almost 2 months before and they told me that my office had not paid it in. I then took a long drive back to Ikeja to the financial department of my office where I got a copy of the evidence of payment to my bank account signed and stamped by Union Bank. On getting back to the Bank, they now changed their story saying the person that recieved it then was on leave. They kept me waiting for about 4 hours saying that they were checking files and drawers for whatever. It wasn't until I raised fire and brimstone that my account was credited. I have since moved my salary account to another bank.

Politics › Re: Wolfowitz To Resign, Why Didn't El Rufai? by jidody(op): 11:07am On May 18, 2007
Wolfowitz resignation was actually a deal to save face. He was about to be dismissed from the World Bank. Nobody wants to be disgraced (See how Femi Pedro tried to quickly resign in Lagos). The pressure from the public and Board members of the World Bank brought this about. We, the Nigerian public have the power through our representatives, the press and other means to exert similar pressure on our corrupt public officials. The question is, do we use this power?
Politics › Wolfowitz To Resign, Why Didn't El Rufai? by jidody(op): 10:31am On May 18, 2007
Nairalanders, Paul Wolfowitz is resigning as World Bank president because of the case of conflict of interest that saw him approving a pay rise for his woman friend Ms Shaha Riza from $130,000 to $193,000. When the allegations came to fore, I was almost certain that this would be the result.

Coming back home, sometime in 2004, FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai was found to have employed his lady friend Ms Aishatu Kolo as a special assistant with a pay of N9.7 million claiming she was a World Bank expert. It turned out that the lady was just a Youth Corper.  Nothing happened to El-Rufai.

In my opinion, our lackadaisical attitude towards the corrupt ways of our leaders serves to encourage them and continues to lead us into an uncertain future.

What do you guys think?
Car Talk › Re: Your Car Is 'Not An Investment!' by jidody(m): 5:52pm On May 16, 2007
A car is not an asset, except its being used for commercial transport. If not for our bad public transportation, its always better to go without the liability (cost of buying, registration, insurance and all the other extras).

Sorry!

She knew what she was up for so she deserved the treatment.

The law is very clear and for those not up to speed on the law, it is clearly stated on the customs form that s handed out in the aircraft just before landing. " If you have cash above $10,000, u need to declare otherwise if it is discovered from a random check, then that money would be forfieted to the government" Declaring does not mean the money would be taken from you. Its just a routine procedure. Nigeria has a similar law, which I think requires you to declare anything $5,000 and above. So lets learn from Ms Odiase's experience and always be aware,

Technology Market › Re: Gbenga At Binary Digits Doesn't Want To Replace My Laptop Battery by jidody(m): 8:42pm On May 08, 2007
Typical of a lot of Nigerian Businesses. Customer Service is far below average. I think you should pursue the issue to its logical conclusion, they are usualy encouraged to continue delivering bad service because a lot of us give up easily and accept the standards they give us even though we are dishing out our hard earned money.

Naija4ward:
Sir, what is the name of this estate? Did you say near Mayfair Gardens? Mayfair Gardens is in Awoyaya, so if this site is near Mayfair then IT IS NOT LEKKI.

Will realtors stop confusing innocent members of the public. The nearest place even to Awoyaya is Sangotedo. This is how I got sold a land in Awoyaya described to me in London as Lekki.
That general axis is referred to as Lekki corridor. That is why the Lagos state Government has Lekki Phase 1 close to VI, Lekki Phase 2 by Ajah and Lekki Phase 3 after Awoyaya. So I don't think we are being misled.

Its just a room that also includes the basic amenities; bathroom, kitchen and small storage space. More or less like what you call a studio in the US.
