CrimeFake Miracle Syndicate Nabbed, Says Pastor Hired Them by jidxin(op): 11:27am On Aug 22, 2016
Members of a syndicate, which specialised in confirming fake prophecies for pastors, have been arrested by the police in Enugu State.

Our correspondent gathered that the group also faked healings for some men of God, who contracted and paid them for their services.

The suspected fraudsters were identified as Obi Ejike from Ubaho Okija in Anambra State; Mary Kuku from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State; Joy Oluwakemi from Ojo, Lagos State; Nwosu Chizoba from Umunze, Anambra State; and Peter Uchechi from Ebonyi State.

They were reportedly apprehended while on their way to Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, where they were contracted to stage phoney miracles and healings for an unnamed pastor in the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were apprehended on Friday during an argument while waiting to board a vehicle at Holy Ghost Park, Enugu.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development on Sunday, explained that the argument among the fraudsters drew the attention of some policemen within the premises of the park, who interrogated them.

Amaraizu said two members of the syndicate, Ejike and Oluwakemi, opened up on the group’s activities.

Revelations made by the duo led to the arrest of other members of the group at P and T bus stop, Enugu, on Saturday, where they had assembled to board a bus to Abakiliki, the venue of a church service.

A member of the group, Uchechi, said they were usually recruited in large numbers and kept in a house from where they would shuttle to confirm fake prophecies and stage-manage miracles for pastors.

Uchechi said they were usually paid through a coordinator, who acted as a middleman between the syndicate and the pastors.

Upon their arrival in the church, a man, who works for the pastor, would instruct the syndicate on the nature of the assignment.

Uchechi explained that before the scheduled church service, they would list their names and the fake ailments they had, which would be given to the pastor while ministering to the congregation.

During the ‘prophetic hour’ session of the service, members of the syndicate, who were already known to the pastor, would come out when people who had problems were summoned to the altar.

Subsequently, members of the syndicate would announce before the congregation that they had received healing following the pastor’s ministrations.

In other cases, according to Uchechi, members of the syndicate would come out to ‘confirm’ a prophecy, which would be made by the pastor in the course of the service, based on the information they provided before the session.

She added that the members of their group usually fell under the ‘influence’ of the pastor’s anointing, during worship sessions.

“Some pastors use us to grow their churches and ministries and we are paid later through our coordinator, depending on our roles,” Uchechi said.

Ejike, who explained that he worked with the coordinator, admitted that he was in charge of the Abakiliki job, which the group was going for when they were apprehended.

He said he decided to go into the fake prophecy business after his business collapsed in Lagos.

Ejike added that he was mostly involved in the recruitment of personnel for various assignments.

Another member of the group, Chizoba, said she started the ‘business’ in Abuja, after finding it difficult to fend for her baby, who she had out of wedlock.

According to her, she eventually relocated to Onitsha, Anambra State, to team up with the syndicate.

Two other members of the syndicate, Oluwakemi and Kuku, claimed to be widows with four children each, adding that hardship pushed them into the crime.

The police spokesperson, Amaraizu, said investigations were ongoing.

FriendChoice:
You have to remove the word hatred from your dictionary for the sake of humanity, I guess you have been misinformed by media of what exactly the north is. Don't allow differences in region or Tribe to make you a fool.

Kwara belongs to the north and that cannot be changed, nobody will migrate to any part even if Nigeria is to divide. I guess you hate being referred to as northerner bcux of how people who hav never been to the north speak about it, calling useless names like Ab0ki na cow, they are illiterate, they are all almajiris etc.

Going by history Central northern part of Nigeria have once tried to be more associated to the southwestern during Obasanjo regime, but it doesn't go well.

The UN certified former terrorist group "OPC " launched attacks on northerners living in Southwest Nigeria. People of Northcentral Nigeria (Kwara) are also attacked despite their uniformity in tribe. The southwest people says, northerner is a northerner weda 4rm kwara or not. This is one of the major reason the North central feels more comfortably referred to as north.

One of my major example is you. You are a northerner born in southwest being discriminated by southwesterners, then you decide to hate the north. After hating the north, they will still call you a northerner. double wahala 4 u.

My Final message to you and any1 reading.

Human beings are equal before our creator, the best among you is who fears him most. There should be no discrimination on tribes, races, regional and in whatever capacity. We should learn traditional, norms and culture of various societies.

It does not matter your tribe, region or ethnicity. God made it the way he want. Who are u to question God?

Its only through education that we can transform the society and gain an insight into lifestyle of others and thereby help us appreciate diversity and learn to live in peace and harmony with one another.

Mr. Joachim Chinakwe, the 41-year-old trader arrested and detained at the Sango Ota Police Station, Ogun State, on August 13, 2016, for naming his dog Buhari, has said his life is no longer safe.

Speaking with our correspondent on Friday minutes before he was again locked behind bars at the State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the capital, after initially being released last Tuesday, the father of one who hails from Delta State, said he feared for his life because he does not know what could happen to him next.

“I had to leave for Eleweran very early on Friday after receiving a letter on Thursday evening inviting me to the Command. I thought I was being called over for a peace talk, I never knew it was for the purpose of detaining me again.

“I am a law-abiding citizen of this country, I have never deliberately committed any offence before, I don’t know why I am being treated like this. I only called the dog that name for the love I have for President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria, I didn’t mean to taunt or hurt anybody with it. I don’t know what next could follow this, I am afraid for my life, I am in danger, please help me,” Chinakwe said before the telephone line went off.

The latest twist to the matter has caused relatives and friends who have been running round to free the trader serious distress. His 26-year-old wife, Ifeoma, and 18-month-old daughter, Temi, has also been badly affected by the situation.

Looking frail and barely able to support her body weight, the woman whined in pain as she made her way from the bathroom at the back of the small compound into one of the two small rooms she and her family shares. With eyes still swollen from days of crying and her bulging stomach putting an extra burden on her shoulders and weak legs, it is one of the most agonising periods in the life of the young mother who is almost due for the delivery of her second child. Since her husband was first arrested on the orders of one Kalilu, a public toilet operator in their Omikunle neighbourhood who accused him of deliberately naming his dog Buhari, after his father just to taunt him and members of the Hausa community, life has not been the same for the woman.

According to the woman the latest development has affected her health and that of Temi terribly. Apart from now struggling to survive without their breadwinner and ‘protector’, Ifeoma says the two of them have been on medication since her husband’s travails began.

“This is the saddest period of my life,” the heartbroken woman said fighting back tears. “Since I met and married my husband three years ago, I have never felt this bad or suffered this much. But since this problem started, I and my daughter have been badly affected,” she continued. “When I went to the police station last Sunday morning to see him, the officers instead of allowing me in, started abusing me. They told me that they would make sure I give birth behind my husband’s cell. Even though I was crying and pleading with them to allow me see him, they kept abusing me, not minding my present condition.

“Since that day, I have not been able to eat well. Also, I and Temi have been very sick and we have been on medications. On several occasions she would wake me up at night, crying and asking after her father. I don’t know what to tell her, so I would also cry.

“The two of us cannot sleep in the house alone, so in the evenings, I go to my aunty’s house at Ojuore to stay till morning before returning home. I am just praying that all the stress that I have been through and tears that I have shed the past few days don’t affect the baby or even make me to lose the child because already, I am not as healthy as I was before this problem started. I won’t lie to you; life has not been the same for me and my daughter without him around,” the heavily-pregnant mother said before finally succumbing to her emotions.

It was a few minutes of intense crying, her sorrowful voice rent the entire room – it was the sight of an injured woman pouring out her heart.

Obinna Obasi, a relation to the detained man who also spoke to our correspondent during the visit to the family house in a remote part of Sango Ota on Friday, said the case apart from taking its toll on their energies and time, had also drained their pockets.

He said relatives and friends of Chinakwe have even had to borrow money from a micro finance bank to hire lawyers to fight his case – one of whom he said even duped them in the process.

“This matter has really drained us financially,” Obasi revealed. “The little that we even have has been exhausted. We have spent everything on us to get a lawyer and also run around trying to find a solution to this problem. In fact, a few days ago, we had to borrow some money from a micro finance bank because we didn’t want him to remain and die in police cell. The first lawyer we paid to handle the case for us disappeared with our money. We had to go beyond our power to raise money to hire another lawyer. To be honest, I cannot estimate the amount of money we have spent so far on this case in trying to get Joe released,” he said.

Narrating how the entire issue started, Obasi, who said he was with the detained man at the time of his first arrest last Saturday, explained that all efforts to get the matter resolved has been frustrated by the accuser and his backers who have only been pretending to be on the side of peace.

“Kalilu, the main accuser, said Buhari was the name of his father and that Joe deliberately gave his dog that name to taunt him and the rest of the Hausa residents in the area. But we are still wondering if it is now an offence to give your pet animal the name of your choice. Even if you say it is an offence, at least we have all sat together to resolve the whole issue and the man himself has shown some sense of responsibility by saying he was sorry if his action offended anybody. So, why is he still being harassed till now? This is not fair. His persecution is affecting his pregnant wife and little daughter who have both been very sick as a result of the problem,” he said.

When our correspondent visited the public toilet Kalilu operates which is just a few yards away from Omikunle Street where the 41-year-old detained trader lives with his family, the accuser was said to have also gone to the police command at the state capital. The men at the place refused to speak on the matter, asking our correspondent to come back later in the evening. They also refused to supply the mobile phone number of their kinsman.

An officer at the Sango Police Station who did not disclose his name but is privy to details of the matter, told our correspondent that the accused was arrested because his action was intended at causing public unrest in the community which has a large Igbo and Hausa presence.

According to him, Chinakwe not only named his dog Buhari but also inscribed it on its body and usually walked with it into the midst of the Hausas, a claim the 41-year-old and his relatives denied vehemently.

Acting spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, revealed on Friday that the accused would be arraigned at the Sango Magistrate Court on Monday.

“The man is here with us at Eleweran, he is being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department. The charge will be prepared and he will be arraigned at Sango Magistrate Court on Monday. What he did was highly provocative, it can cause ethnic and religious crisis,” he said.

But human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, Lagos, Monday Ubani, told Saturday PUNCH that there is no such law in Nigeria’s criminal code which states that it is an offence to give your pets a name of your choice.

Though Ubani concedes that this particular case is novel as far as law was concerned in Nigeria to the best of his knowledge, he said the police cannot arrest and detain a person except they are able to prove that the individual’s action is indeed capable of causing breach of public peace.

He however, wonders why the accused would name a dog after his neighbour’s father as alleged because according to him it could be a bit offensive even though it was not a crime.

NYSCCorps Members Offer Prisoners Legal Aid In Lagos by jidxin(op): 9:54am On Aug 11, 2016
Members of the Legal Aid Community Development Service
(CDS) group of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in
Lagos have visited Ikoyi Prison to provide free legal services to
inmates awaiting trial. TEMITAYO AYETOTO (NYSC Lagos)
reports.
Access to legal services does not come cheap for the poor. As
they struggle to meet essential needs such as food, clothes and
shelter, access to legal assistance is a luxury. For the poor,
staying out of trouble appears to be the best.
Lack of confidence in the legal system and low awareness, a
2014 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report
said, are part of the factors responsible for the inability of the
poor to access legal aid.
Against this backdrop, some National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) members in Lagos embarked on provision of free legal
aid to the vulnerable.
The Corps members, who are in Legal Aid Community
Development Service (CDS), said their action was in line with
the objectives of the Nigerian Legal Aid Council.
Last week, the Corps members visited Ikoyi Prison to render
free legal assistance to some inmates, who are awaiting trials.
More than 30 Corps members, who are lawyers, were at the
prison to scrutinise the inmates’ case files.
They took up cases of about 150 inmates standing trials for
offences, including stealing, smoking of Indian hemp, burglary,
armed robbery and murder. The inmates were assured that their
cases would be hastened up in the court.
The gesture, according to the Corp members, was informed by
the need to stop abuse of people rights and to restore
confidence in the legal system.
The CDS’ Corps Liaison Officer (CLO), Janet Gbam, said the
services were particularly targeted at decongesting the prison,
noting that certain offences could be handled within the police
station, before subjecting the accused persons to detention in
maximum prisons.
Janet said the pro-bono legal service was a pragmatic tool for
bringing succour to the defenceless, noting that the Corps
members’efforts led to the discharge of no fewer than 50
accused persons in Lagos prisons.
Janet said: “As lawyers, we should not be prodded to help the
vulnerable because of money. We need to act to re-organise our
society and make the legal system just. I believe NYS offers
veritable platform to carry out this objective.
“There are a lot of people, who are taken to court without legal
representation. Some of them cannot pay expensive legal fees.
This is why we take up such cases and offer to help. It is our
way of giving back to the society. After taking up the cases, we
go to court to ascertain the ones without lawyers. We then
represent them. Through this, we have freed more than 50
inmates in Ikoyi and Kirikiri Prison.”
The Corps members urged law enforcement agents to stop
complicating court processes, noting that continued detention
of accused persons without trial contravened their rights.
She added: “We need to enlighten our law enforcement agents.
There are some trivial offences that can be handled without
taking the accused person to the maximum prisons. It is not
everything that should end in prison. We have mediation and
arbitration process that can be used in resolving disputes
without resulting into legal action.”
The Corp members also donated materials, including food, to
the inmates.
The Assistant CLO, Steven Azubike, said: “The essence of
donating materials to the inmate is to make them comfortable. I
think the spirit is high among us and we will continue with this
gesture, because it is part of our duties to contribute our quota
to the development of our country.”
Chief Superintendent of Ikoyi Prison, Sunday Akpan, hailed the
Corps members’gesture, saying it would help to decongest the
prison.
He said: “Many organisations have been concentrating their
aids on getting awaiting trial inmates out of the prison. But, we
have others facilities in the prison that require support too. We
have schools, where we trained the inmates in various
craftworks to make them useful whenever they are released
back to the society. Members of the public can also partner the
Prison Service on these programmes.”

Babsopey I have been secretly following this story an i must confess that I am very impressed with your writing skills, but however, here is my candid, sincere observations and advice;

1) That since this is all about a typical Yoruba characters, there was no need to use any tribe as the use of Uche (Igbo name) in the write up already depicts negativity which is the problem we have in Nigeria today.

2) No single use of an Hausa character which makes many to think that Hausas are irrelevant (in University Education)

3) That in the next story titled RJECTION I sincerely advocate for the use of only Yoruba characters (or otherwise all major tribes in Nigeria should be positively represented)

4) God bless Nigeria

Eye witnesses recounts that the couples have had a heated argument before the man went ahead to set himself ablaze. They said: “ He had a big problem with his family; his second wife gave birth and brings home Chinese twins as they both have Chinese genes in their respective families. It is believed that the wife slept around with her ex Chinese boss when she was working at a Chinese restaurant.
