Power Mike was born as Michael Okpala on the 8th of August, 1939 to Echeobi and Janet Okpala at Neni, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State in the eastern part of Nigeria . He was the first born of a family of three. When he reached elementary school age, he was enrolled into the Anglican Primary School at Adazi-Enu, a neighbouring town to Neni. It was at this primary school that he started building his athletic career by being active in sporting events. He was so interested in boxing that he became an amateur boxer. After finishing primary school in 1952, he left his village for Onitsha , in order to learn how to organise and run a trade business. At Onitsha, he joined the Dick Tiger Boxing Club as a middle weight amateur boxer. It was here that Dick Ihetu Tiger became his role model. On leaving Onitsha, he left for Kano to specialize in the business of buying and selling tyres. During an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic he realized his dream. This realization sparked his rebirth and he acquired a new name, Power Mike . Power Mike While in Kano in northern Nigeria, he started a superman show business which made him popular locally. His imaginitive exhibitions in Kano virtually cast a spell on people from various social backgrounds because they were yearning to see him perform. Showmanship took him around the world in the mid-50's. His act included such feats as using his bare hands to bend a six-inch nail, lifting four heavy men with ease, engaging several men in a game of tug-of-war, using bare hands to break a coconut and so on. In 1961, he started a nation wide tour which took him to Onitsha, Enugu, Aba, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Jos and Kaduna. In 1964, Power Mike went to Ghana and his performances there were a tremendous success. He later toured Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal before he found his way into Europe in 1967, accompanied by his friend Engr. Onyeso, the Igwe of Nri. He got a one year contract in Sweden after which he went to Greece. It was there that he became a wrestler. Wrestling A wrestling promoter saw him performing as a superman in Greece and took interest in him. He was trained by Kalie Abdulkalie of Lebanon. Initially, he did not like the brutality in wrestling. However, he later became an acclaimed wrestler and one of the best that Greece could boast of at the time. When he left Greece, he went back to Britain to compete, and thus he truly started his career as a wrestler. He came back to Africa in 1970 and in the same year he defeated Gambia's Massambula to become the African heavyweight wrestling champion and titleholder. He wrestled with and defeated Ali Baba of Lebanon in 1973. Johnny Kwango also became a victim of Power Mike's when he (Mike) defeated him in Lagos. Among the list of wrestlers that Power Mike defeated were Power Jack, Joseph Kovacs, Judd Harris, John Tiger of Canada and a host of other notable worldwide superstars. Apart from his pro wrestling prowess, he was also a promoter of the sport and his Power Mike International Promotions brought foreign wrestlers like Mil Mascaras, Dick the 'Bulldog Brower', Buddy Rose, Michael Hayes, Mighty Igor, The Mongols, Carlos Colon, Chris Adams, Thunderbolt Williams and so on to the shores of Nigeria. He retired from active wrestling in 1976 and then focused on international promotions. Michael Okpala died on 11 March 2004 at the National Hospital, Abuja after a protracted illness. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Okpala |

We can’t shy away from the fact that some people can’t do without painting the town red, especially, on weekends, they gulp everything and then find it difficult to get next morning. Typical hangover symptoms — nausea, sensitivity to light, headache, aching muscles, diarrhoea, and decreased motor skills — are caused by changes in body chemistry, including hormones, chemical reactions within the body, and the toxic chemicals in alcohol. Should you find yourself in such a situation, here are some simple homemade foods and drinks that help. Drinks that help: Water: This should be your number one priority after waking up with a pounding head. In fact, drinking some water before going to bed prevent some painful hangover symptoms, but grabbing the water bottle in the morning doesn’t hurt either. Coconut water: Aside taking sports drinks, try some coconut water, which has five of the electrolytes found in human blood. Fruit juice: Pour a glass of apple or cranberry juice to start the recovery process. The fructose in sweet fruity drinks gives the body some instant energy, and help boost metabolism to get rid of those gnarly alcohol toxins. Foods that help: Bananas and spinach. These are rich in potassium and electrolyte that is often depleted due to alcohol’s diuretic effect. Eggs Eggs are full of amino acids like cysteine and taurine. Taurine boosts liver function and prevent liver disease. Cysteine breaks down acetaldehyde, the yucky headache-causing chemical that’s left over when the liver breaks down ethanol. Chicken Noodle Soup. This can restock sodium and water levels in the body. Chicken and some vegetables contain cysteine, which give the liver the much-needed boost. Crackers or Toast with Honey. Crackers are filled with preservatives, so get a 100 percent whole-wheat variety. Crackers and toast have bland carbs that raise blood sugar without upsetting the stomach. Add some honey to help the body burn off alcohol faster. Oats A hot bowl of oatmeal has plenty of essential nutrients like B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Oats can neutralise acids in the body and raise blood sugar levels. Tomatoes Take the tomato juice. Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation in the body. Tomatoes also contain fructose and vitamin C to give the liver a boost. Avoid Greasy food Coffee Orange juice: Sour citrus, like orange and grapefruit, can irritate an already sensitive stomach http://m.dailytimes.com.ng/article/18725/having-a-hangover-here’s-food-to-help/ |
The Nigerian Police often parade suspects as criminals. Is this constitutional? Sadly to say, Nigeria is a country of absurdities. A country where anything can happen and things do in fact happen on a daily basis. Parading of suspects by the Police before the public prior to their being charged to court, tried, found guilty and convicted is an aberration. It is unconstitutional and makes nonsense of the doctrine of the presumption of innocence until found guilty enshrined in our constitution. It amounts to gross violation of the suspect’s fundamental human right to fair hearing. By virtue of Section 36(5) & (6) CFRN 1999, an accused person is presumed innocent until the contrary is proved. Nowhere in our statutes can a provision be found empowering the police or any other law enforcement agency to first humiliate a suspect, thoroughly shame and disgrace him before passing him over to a law court for his trial. The only instance where the police are allowed by law to parade a suspect is where there is need for the identification of the suspect by a witness who claims to have seen the suspect commit the alleged offence. In this case, the suspect is lined up amidst other people while the witness attempts to point him out from the crowd. This is called identification parade and it does not take place before the press. Parading suspected criminals in the media is already convicting the person in the court of public opinion. There is no way you can ensure that a person has a free and fair trial if you have already given the public a bad impression about the person. There is no doubt that the single most important reason while the police engage in this practice is for publicity to call attention to itself and make the public believe that it is actually fighting crime. But it is a poor approach in winning back the confidence of the public that has long lost faith in the ability of the Nigerian police to protect it in the face of the current, unprecedented upsurge in scale of violent crimes across the land. http://m.dailytimes.com.ng/article/19071/police-wrong-to-parade-suspects-before-trial/ |

The APC accused organisers of the public favouritism and campaign of calumny against the business political interest of the party and its candidates. According to SaharaReporters, Director Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organization (APCPCO) Garba Shehu, said in an official comment on Thursday in Abuja that the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) organised discussion was oppressed with essential mistakes. He added that the channels are controlled by administration of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. Garba said: “A salutary inspection of the composition of NEGD brings into focus the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON), National Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Africa Independent Television (AIT, owned by a PDP chieftain). And going by the avalanche of inflammatory statements, misinformation and blatant lies being propagated by some of these media against our Party and candidates contrary to the Koffi Annan brokered Abuja Peace Accord, and the failure of these aggressors to desist and apologize, have left the APC Campaign with no option than to steer clear of any premeditated smear campaign that could be inimical to our prospective electoral success .” The spokesperson of the APC campaign further clarified that the ignore by the APC should not be seen as disregard to Nigerian electorates, or an explanation for the party to escape public examination. Shehu continued: “The APC is a party of progressive intellectuals, genuine technocrats, successful businessmen and women, and most of all eminent and courteous people of honor who would never condescend to the level of sadistic gutter propaganda, all in the name of political exigency and crass opportunism. ” Spokesman also accused national media of banning the media advertisements of the opposition party. He said: “Aside, elements close to sitting President Goodluck Jonathan have commissioned series of derogatory and death threat advertorials against the person, family and associates of the opposition leader, General Muhammadu Buhari, to which the APC had sent letters of complaint to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of State Security, Advertisers Practitioners of Nigeria (APCON), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the erring media that published or aired such offensive adverts or documentaries. None of our letters of protest has been attended to by the authorities. So whatever the incumbent President wants to do with the instrument of state to harass members of the opposition into humiliating submission would not work. The APC/Buhari campaign is now a people’s movement. The more they try to rubbish it, the more popular we are with the populace.” http://www.naij.com/375372-apc-boycott-bon-organised-tv-debates-apc-campaign.html |
Hajia Mujahidat Daba Asari-Dokubo asked on her Facebook page why general didn’t ask the DSS to arrest Buhari, accusing him of being commander in chief of Boko Haram. Read what she wrote: “Rtd General Danguma said Asari Dokubo, Tompolo and others should be arrested. Questions for Danguma did you arrest Mohammed when he was insulting the commander in chief of the armed forces president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan? Did he ask the DSS to arrest Buhari who is the commander in chief of BOKOHARAM? Did he asked the DSS to arrest Gov Ameachi and his party APC when they said they will form a parallel govt should the PDP declared winner May 29th? Did the general asked the DSS to arrest those who attacked the president campaign convoy in katsina, bauchi and burnt the PDP presidential campaign buses in other northern states ? I can go on and on the list is endless.TYT Danguma should not raise dust just because is one of the beneficial of the Niger delta oil wells. The north can not use our oil to rule Nigeria and also restitute the poverty stricken north. If a Niger delta man is not good enough to rule, his oil should also be rejected.” Ex-Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo has also hit back at General Danjuma asking the general to return his oil wells. He said: “Theophilus Danjuma should return Ijaw oil before calling for my arrest. He’s a Gambari slave.” Danjuma has not only attacked Asari-Dokubo, Tompolo and other former Niger Delta militants, but also ordered their immediate arrest for threatening to plunge the country into war. http://www.naij.com/374975-wife-of-former-militant-leader-attacks-gen-danjuma.html |

ISIS militants have executed 13 teenage boys for watching the Asian Cup football match between Iraq and Jordan last week. The young football fans had been caught watching the game on television in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which is controlled by the Islamic State. The teenagers were rounded up and publicly executed by a firing squad using machine guns, anti-ISIS activist group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently reports. ‘The bodies remained lying in the open and their parents were unable to withdraw them for fear of murder by terrorist organisation,’ the group writes on their website. Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently is a small activist collective which secretly documents the shocking violence and oppression ISIS has brought to their home city. They said the 13 teenagers were rounded up by ISIS militants in the Al-Yarmouk district of Mosul, and executed in public. The Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode asked Buhari to withdraw from the election and to apologise to Nigerians. Femi Fani-Kayode who advised Buhari to report himself to the nearest police station, adding that the military must strip him of his ranks and privileges. PDP spokesperson added that with the papers on ground, General Buhari was never qualified to be in the Nigerian military as a commissioned Officer, saying that if he fails to report to the Police, the PDP would then hand him over to God. He said: “Information reaching us now has shown that the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed today in Kano at a press conference that the affidavit he swore to in which he claimed that his credentials were in the custody of the military was not true after all. “The implication of the action of this so-called “Mr. Clean” is nothing but perjury and we all know that this is a grave criminal offence under our laws and constitution. “We urge Buhari and his party to do the right thing and tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian people, throw in the towel and report to the nearest police station for interrogation and prosecution. “Anything less than that would be an insult to the collective intelligence and integrity of the Nigerian people. We also urge the Nigerian Armed Forces to consider the possibility of stripping him of his rank and privileges given the fact that he was never qualified to join the Nigerian army as a commissioned officer in the first place because he never had the prerequisite qualifications which was a school certificate. “Given this, at best Buhari should never have been anything more than a non-commissioned officer. ” Fani-Kayode was reacting to statements by the Nigerian military that although Buhari received the West African School Certificate in 1961, copies of his credetentials could not be found in Army records. http://www.naij.com/368882-pdp-blames-buhari-for-lying-on-oath.html |

He spoke in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, during a two-day ecumenical prayer. Adeboye said that politicians in most cases barely realize their pledges. The cleric illustrated his statement with the story of three travellers – an Indian, a Jew and a politician. He said while the three men were travelling, they had a problem and went to a farmer for help, but the farmer said he could only house two people. Adeboye said the Indian offered to sleep in the shed, but returned few minutes later saying that there was a cow there. The Indian, according to the story, said he couldn’t sleep in the shed because cows were gods loved in his country. The Jew also came back complaining that a pig was inside the barn and that the place was dirty. The politician also agreed to sleep there, but instead of the politician coming back to complain, Adeboye said it was the pig and cow that came, saying that the politician should be sent away because he promised to make the environment, including the shed, favorable with an air-conditioner. The pastor said: “I don’t trust politicians. Politicians are liars. They don’t fulfil most of their promises. A politician can tell you that they will give all of you (students) chicken each, which we all know it is impossible.” The RCCG General Overseer, meanwhile, called on Nigerians to stop perturbing themselves over who would win next month’s polls. According to Adeboye, God is a master planner who has already planned the leadership development of Nigeria. http://www.naij.com/364565-pastor-adeboye-says-god-has-his-plan-for-nigeria.html |
