Fifty-two members of the Biafra Zionist Front (BZF) led by Benjamin Onwuka, who were arrested in Enugu May 30, have been remanded in the Enugu Correctional facility.

The group was allegedly picked up on their way to hoisting the Biafra flag inside the Enugu Government House.

Reports said the Pro-Biafra agitators had concluded a procession near the Okpara Square and were marching to the Government House when they were arrested

They were arraigned at the Enugu Magistrate Court Wednesday and remanded in prison alongside their leader Benjamin Onwuka.

Tuesday, May 30 was declared sit-at-home day by Pro-Biafra agitators in remembrance of the day the defunct Biafra Republic was declared, a development that forced businesses, schools, markets and offices to shut down in Enugu and other Southeast States.

It was learnt the men who took off from Michael Okpara Square at Independence Layout, Enugu were already rounding off their procession when the police swooped on them.

In eight years, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration spent over N85 billion on Nigeria Air, the controversial national carrier, yet infrastructures across airports in Nigeria are still dilapidated.

Data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Compilation of Budgetary Allocations show that the federal government spent N85.42 billion on transaction advisers, working capital and consultancy bills for Nigeria Air between 2016 and 2023.

Despite the huge amount spent on the national carrier, the airline has not only failed to secure Air Operating Certificate, an approval granted by a Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority to an aircraft operator to allow it to use aircraft for commercial flight operations, but has also not secured a single aircraft for its operations.

Last week, Hadi Sirika, the then minister of aviation, unveiled a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which was presented as belonging to Nigeria Air.

It was a sad anniversary celebration for over 35 members of pro-Biafra agitators, under aegis of Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM), as the police, yesterday, arrested them in Enugu during a procession to mark this year’s Biafra Day.

Pecohub gathered that members of the group led by Benjamin Onwuka, who assembled at a location in Independent Layout, Enugu, carrying Biafra insignia, were accosted and arrested by the police during a procession.

It was not clear whether Onwuka was among those arrested.

Sources said they were arrested around 11:00 a.m. and taken to the state Police Command, adding that the agitators were also displaying United States of America (USA) and Israeli flags.

A 24-year-old woman, Linda David, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, for stealing underwear valued at N115,000.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced David after she pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency. He however gave her an option of N40,000 fine and warned her to desist from life of crime.

According to him, the judgement would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal act. The defendant was charged with a one-count charge of stealing underwear.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo told the court that David committed the offence on May 12 at Trinity Supermarket along Ahmadu Bello Way Kaduna.

According to Leo, the defendant went into the supermarket and stole 20 pairs of panties, 20 pieces of boxers and 15 bras all valued at N115,000.

Mr Vitalis Iloanwusi got a Cumulative Grade Point of 5.O in two semesters and emerged Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu VC for one day, setting the record as the first male student to win the position.

The Founder/VC Reverend Father Prof Anieke commended Mr Iloanwusi for the extraordinary performance.

Reverend Father Prof Anieke noted that graduates of the University who were ( Vice Chancellor for one day ) are doing extremely well in life which he said is an indication that the program was good.

He explained that when he discovered that only females were winning the VC for one day in the university, he threw a challenge to the male students which saw Iloanuwusi emerging as the first male student to win the position.

Mr. Nwafor remarked that the gift might be extended to female students in future in keeping with the gender equality of the University, adding that the car gift cost him N3.9 million naira.

Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo has rescued a widow Mrs Patricia Eligbue from her relatives who forced her to drink water used in washing the corpse of her husband’s nephew.

Narrating her ordeal to the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs Eligbue who lost her husband a long time ago noted that although she’s from Obe Agwa, her husband is from Atani both in Ogbaru local government area of the state.

She went on to say that after her husband’s death, she has been subjected to all kinds of abuse ranging from her husband’s family calling her a witch and other kinds of physical abuse.

According to her, one day the husband’s siblings batched in on her and her only child and started beating her allegeding that she’s responsible for all the unfortunate things happening to them.

She said that it was after the incident that her relatives ran to her aid and while she was about to go with them, her husband’s family refused stating that she needs stay till after a burial ceremony of the husband’s nephew who died.

The poor widow explained that on the day of the burial, she was summoned inside the room where they kept the dead body by one Mr Albert, Godwin, Ozoemina and Onyeàmà. She said that they placed a cutlass on the deceased bodyand asked her to walk over it four times of which she did before they washed off the corpse and forced her to drink the water before pouring the remaining on her.

The widow stated that they also accused her of killing the deceased.

Reacting to the ugly incident, Hon Obinabo noted that although the alleged culprits have been arrested, she will make sure that the law takes it’s full course.

The Commissioner went further to warn everyone to desist from any form of harmful traditional practices against widows in the state as such would not be tolerated.

Upon investigation by newsmen, it was discovered that the deceased died after a brief illness at her sister’s house somewhere around Ozubulu. It was also discovered that the incident started as a result of a dream of the sister in law where she claimed that she saw Mrs Patricia strangling the deceased.

Another discovery worthy of note was that one Mr Albert, has refused to share a farm land belonging to him and the late widow’s husband.

Although the deceased cause of death wasn’t ascertained as at the time of writing this report, it was gathered that he had a swollen feet and body before his death.

Nevertheless, the alleged perpetuators denied the allegation but have been trying their best to conceal the act until the Women and Social Welfare Commissioner stepped into the case.

The Honourable Commissioner in collaboration with the Police has arrested the culprits and they will be arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka on Wednesday.

The Justice Department announced a $144.5 million settlement on Wednesday with victims of a 2017 mass shooting at a church in Texas that left 26 people dead and 22 injured.

The agreement in principle, which still needs court approval, is aimed at resolving civil lawsuits stemming from the attack carried out by a former member of the US Air Force, the department said in a statement.

A federal district court judge ruled in July 2021 that the government was partly liable because the air force failed to enter information into the FBI’s background check system that would have prevented the assailant from buying a gun.

Devin Kelley, who killed himself after carrying out the attack at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, had a conviction for domestic violence on his record and had been court-martialed.

The Texas judge who heard the case ordered the government to pay more than $230 million to victims of the attack but the Justice Department appealed the ruling.

The Amuri Ancient Kingdom in Nkanu West council area of Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria, has put a curse on the killers of the Labour Party candidate for the Enugu East Senatorial District in the February 25 presidential election, Oyibo Chukwu.

The community also put a curse on their sponsors.

Chukwu, a former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Oji River branch was gruesomely assassinated on February 22 at Amechi Awkunanaw while returning from a campaign in Agbani, Nkanu West Local Government Area headquarters.

Although his younger brother Kelvin Chukwu who was later nominated to replace him by the Labour Party won the senatorial seat, condemnation has continued to trail his assassination more so when all the leaders of the state including Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi have maintained silence regarding the issue.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has authorised the importation of Oha leaves from Nigeria.

“We are advising the public of our decision to authorise the importation of fresh Oha leaves (Pterocarpus mildbraedii) from Nigeria into the continental United States,” the USDA stated in a memo.

Famous in south-east and south-south Nigeria, Oha leaves are used in making Oha soup.

Although the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the USDA prohibits the importation of fruits and vegetables into the United States from certain parts of the world, Oha leaves met the risk analysis requirement which led to the authorisation of its importation.

Mayhem and unrest on Saturday rocked the Ishiagu community in the Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, as over 1,000 women protested the killings and kidnapping of relatives by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the area.

Pecohub reports that the protest, which had lingered for four days, resulted in the setting ablaze of the palace of the monarch of Ishiagu kingdom, Eze Moses Ngele, by hoodlums who allegedly hijacked the protest.

It was gathered that the house and car, including other valuable properties of the Ivo LGA chairman, Emmanuel Aja, were attacked by the rampaging protesters.

Investigation revealed that the women protesters barricaded Amaeze road and other entrances to the community, demanding that the state government and security agencies should arrest and prosecute the killers and kidnappers of their relatives, which have persisted for a long time.

An eyewitness who spoke to Pecohub said, “Women of Ishiagu community staged protest since early hours of yesterday, and till this present time, it’s still ongoing.

“They are protesting the incessant killings and kidnapping along Amaeze road by unknown gunmen. As I speak with you, there’s a total breakdown of laws and order.”

A delegation of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Minister, has delivered $1m support fund to the Turkish government, Pecohub has learnt.

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, on Thursday promised to double the duration of university education in the country from the current four years to eight years, saying Nigerians should elect him to be able to actualise his intention.

“Those of you in school, write it down,” Mr Tinubu said to Nigerian youth during a campaign stop in Osogbo on Thursday afternoon. “Call me a bastard if you spend more than eight years in school. You will be in school for eight years.”

Mr Tinubu’s comments could be deemed insensitive in a country plagued by unnecessary delays in academic years due to persistent strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other tertiary education bodies.

Mr Tinubu’s promise marks a breakaway from longstanding academic programmes in Nigerian universities that run typically four years with the exception of highly specialised studies such as law and medicine, which last five and six years of university study, respectively.

The comment has further fueled criticism from Nigerians on social media, who maintain that Mr Tinubu’s worsening physical health has diminished his mental awareness and should be disqualified from seeking the country’s highest office.

A spokesperson for Mr Tinubu’s campaign did not return comments seeking clarification of his comments.

The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Prof. Christian Anieke, has said that speaking and writing English is a major challenge to many Nigerian graduates.

Anieke spoke when officials of the National Universities Commission visited the university on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that NUC officials were in the institution to assess its postgraduate programmes.

Anieke said the GOUNI had identified the use of English as the major weakness of many graduates from other institutions, stressing that some first-class graduates found it difficult to write or speak correct English.

The VC noted that the face of every university was its postgraduate school and as such showed the university’s research strength as some postgraduates reflect the quality of research of the institution.

“This is why we introduced a course called “Communication in English“ and the students’ inability to use the English language correctly could be due to their background.

“In the PG School, we ensure that when you write your thesis, it will be strong enough to be published in a journal and if not publishable, then you have not written a good thesis,” Anieke said.

An Argentinian TV host has sparked outrage for toasting the Queen’ s death with champagne live on his show.

As news of the beloved monarch’s ailing health and imminent passing spread, there was a global outpouring of grief with national leaders expressing their condolences to the Royal Family.

But as millions mourned, there were some who sickeningly took the chance to celebrate the late Queen’s passing.
