Nairaland GeneralFG Must Create Maritime Ministry - ANLCA by Jillbabs(op): 2:41pm On Dec 01, 2021
Federal Government has been advised to establish a Federal Ministry of Maritime to cater for critical needs that can reposition the maritime industry for optimal performance.

A Chieftain of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Dr. Kayode Farinto made the call on Friday, November 26, at the 3rd Annual Conference/Awards of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), with the title ‘Seamless Port Operations in Nigeria’, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of development and apparent negative growth indices recorded in the industry over the past years.

Farinto emphasized that the continued subjugation and fusing of the maritime industry under the Federal Ministry of Transportation has created an unwholesome neglect in the maritime critical productive mix, efficiency and competitiveness, which he said has led to the loss of Nigeria’s sub regional hub status.

Representing the AMJON Patron, lju Tony Nwabunike at the event and presented a paper on the ‘Roles of Customs Brokers/Freight Forwarders in Seamless Port Operations in Nigeria’, Farinto said “Some of the failures of the industry are through sheer neglect because the transportation ministry have too much to look after and no time to attend to those things that are most critical and urgent.

He said, “The maritime industry is too big to continue to suffer neglect, government should establish a Ministry of Maritime like Ministry of Aviation that will focus on industry matrix and help the country to recover it’s lost capacity and potential. There are lots of factors militating against the maritime industry in Nigeria, including lack of infrastructure like scanners to speed up cargo examination by Customs and other government agencies.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan in a recent gathering in Yenegoa, the capital of Bayelsa State said he believes he is an accidental politician.

Jonathan made the comment at the gala night to wrap up a three-day program of the Unique University of Port Harcourt Class '81 Reunion which ended on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

The statesman who insinuated that he is introvert say politics is meant for extroverts who engage in a lot of conversations and meetings.

A member of the class and host of the reunion, he opined that he is an accidental politician.

While expressing gratitude for the award, Jonathan said, “You know that I don’t know if I am an accidental politician, because I am supposed not to be a politician.

“If you plot a curve from introvert to extrovert and start from zero as the most introvert person and 100 as the most extrovert person, and you plot that continuum, I will be between 35 and 45 on the introvert side.

So, I am an introvert. “An introvert is supposed not to be involved in politics because politics involves much talking and you always want to show your presence. But somehow, God has a way of solving problems.”

Jonathan expressed appreciation to the pioneer graduates of the institution for their support and encouragement, especially while he was in office, adding that he and his wife, Patience, were pleased with the unique get-together.

Nairaland GeneralN340 Fuel Price Can Trigger Crisis, PFN Tells FG by Jillbabs(op): 2:06pm On Nov 29, 2021
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) says the proposed increase in the price of petroleum from N165 to N340 per litre can trigger tension and crises in Nigeria.

The PFN, said this, in turn, could paralyze the nation’s economy if not handled with utmost care.

Its president, Bishop Wale Oke, in a statement Sunday, said removing fuel subsidy would worsen the suffering of the majority of Nigerians, advising the Federal Government against it.

He said: “Everybody will feel it, particularly the less privileged. The negative effects will surely outweigh the positive.

“The cost of transportation for human and goods across the country will skyrocket and other things connected which will have a spiral effect on general living standard of the populace; the suffering will be multi-dimensional. Please, let all stakeholders be sensitive to this avoidable path and do the needful.

“By whatever means, let the Federal Government put its heart into ensuring that our refineries are back to life. In addition, in order to stem the rising cost of living, farmers and others connected to them should be encouraged. This is what can help our economy.”
