The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has joined millions of Nigerians to felicitate with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on his 61th birthday.

Ohanaeze described him as a “game changer, soldier of morals, democracy archetype, the popular sentiment of youth politics, an abundance philosopher, prudent resource manager, ethnic barrier-breaker and a quintessential Igbo audacious icon”.

In a statement the Igbo apex body issued on Monday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, said that Obi’s trajectory, at every juncture, is dotted with ingenuity and resourcefulness.

Ohanaeze noted that Obi still remains an exceptional Nigerian politician who served as a state governor and left office with neither taint, tarnishes or blemish.

“While Obi was busy setting standards of good governance for posterity, some other myopic, timid, and mundane governors were busy with the unconscionable primitive acquisition of wealth to the detriment or impoverishment of the very masses that voted them into office. “The current events in the Nigerian democratic space is a veritable lesson to the incumbent and indeed to the generations yet unborn. Obi was the governor of Anambra State between 2006 and 2014.

“What goes for Obi today is the awesome quality service he rendered to his people as a governor; and of course, the dispositional humility, character comeliness and intellectual acumen that define his public conduct.


“Today, Obi is widely impressed and embraced by the oppressed, dispossessed and the downtrodden on one hand; and overtly depressing to the oppressors, predators and political marauders, on the other.
“There is an age-old maxim founded on reason, experience and truth that good name is far better than money, silver or gold. This saying has never been better exemplified than the infectious Peter Obi phenomenon,” the statement read.

It added, “How else can one explain the ongoing intimidating Obi movement in the present day Nigeria: a man whom his track record of accomplishments has counter vailed the regrettable and despicable tailspin of Nigerian bourgeois cash and carry democracy?

“On the other hand, Obi is today venerated across the length and breadth of Nigeria, not because of his stupendous wealth but because of the irrepressible plastic power of good over evil, light over darkness and virtues over vices.

Nigerian activist, Deji Adeyanju has expressed his frustration over the failed alliance between Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Speaking via his verified Facebook account, Adeyanju stated that he could not understand the reason both presidential candidates could not put aside their differences and merge their parties.

He insisted that it was a very selfish act and it was beyond him to understand the reason for running two different campaigns.

He wrote: I’m just sincerely angry with Nigerian politicians. Very selfish people. I can’t understand why Obi & Kwankwaso can’t agree to work together. If they can’t beg Atiku to work with them, will understand but these 2 running futile individual campaigns is something I can’t ever understand. Completely irritated!

Doyin Okupe, who is the Director-General of Peter Obi Campaign Organisation, some days back revealed on Channels Television that the alliance between both parties had already been dead for several weeks.

He explained that the bone of contention was who would become the presidential candidate after the merger between both parties.
Okupe stated that they could not find a common ground, hence the need to end the alliance talks.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk has reacted to the threat of legal action by Twitter’s board over his decision to terminate the $44 billion acquisition deal.

According to him, the legal action was an attempt to force him to buy Twitter in court.

Musk in an image tweet insisted that the Twitter board refused to disclose the information about the percentage of bots on Twitter, adding that they would now be forced to disclose the same information in court.

The billionaire also hinted that many were doubting his ability to raise the money to buy Twitter.

What Elon Musk is saying

In the Twitter post with different images of him laughing, Musk said: “They said I couldn’t buy Twitter, then they wouldn’t disclose bot info. Now, they want to force me to buy Twitter in court. Now they have to disclose bot info in court.”

This came as Musk’s first open reaction since his lawyer filed for the termination of the deal on Friday and the subsequent threat of legal action by the board of Twitter.

Why Elon Musk wants to terminate the deal

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Elon Musk’s lawyer Mike Ringler, cited many reasons for his decision to quit, noting that “Twitter has not complied with its contractual obligations.”

Ringler claimed that Twitter did not provide Musk with the relevant business information he requested, as Ringler said the contract would require. Musk has previously said he wanted to assess Twitter’s claims that about 5% of its monetizable daily active users (mDAUs) are spam accounts.

“Twitter has failed or refused to provide this information,” Ringler claimed.
“Sometimes Twitter has ignored Mr. Musk’s requests, sometimes it has rejected them for reasons that appear to be unjustified, and sometimes it has claimed to comply while giving Mr. Musk incomplete or unusable information.”

Ringler also charged in the letter that Twitter breached the merger agreement because it allegedly contains “materially inaccurate representations.”

This accusation is based on Musk’s own preliminary review of spam accounts on Twitter’s platform. Twitter has said it’s not possible to calculate spam accounts from solely public information and that a team of experts conducts a review to reach the 5% figure.

“While this analysis remains ongoing, all indications suggest that several of Twitter’s public disclosures regarding its mDAUs are either false or materially misleading,” Ringer alleged.

“Despite public speculation on this point, Mr. Musk did not waive his right to review Twitter’s data and information simply because he chose not to seek this data and information before entering into the Merger Agreement,” Ringer added. “In fact, he negotiated access and information rights within the Merger Agreement precisely so that he could review data and information that is important to Twitter’s business before financing and completing the transaction.”

He also claimed that Twitter breached its obligations under the agreement to get Musk’s consent before changing its ordinary course of business, pointing to recent layoffs at the company.

Barcelona are trying to rebuild as they start to emerge from the financial crisis that forced the exit of Lionel Messi 12 months ago. President Joan Laporte clearly feels he can improve his squad but needs to raise money, hence his efforts to ease Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong out of the Nou Camp. Signing someone like Ronaldo would seem to go against the wider vision - setting aside his obvious link to Real Madrid.

Spanish newspaper AS is reporting Ronaldo met Laporte in Barcelona on Monday.

Verdict
Barcelona would have some explaining to do if they agreed a deal.

Why would they sign Ronaldo?
New owner Todd Boehly is trying to make an impression at Stamford Bridge following his takeover and there are few bigger names in the game than Ronaldo. Romelu Lukaku's exit does create space in Thomas Tuchel's squad for a striker. However, Lukaku's more direct style did not suit Tuchel's approach - and it is difficult to see Ronaldo being a better fit. And, having lost an eye-watering sum on the Lukaku deal - at least in the short-term - committing another enormous amount on a player who will be 38 next season would be brave.

What are the rumours?
With Bruce Buck, Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech leaving, the suggestion is that Boehly is having an increasingly influential say on Chelsea's transfer strategy. The Athletic report Chelsea are considering a move to buy the Portugal international this summer.

It is easy to see how it could happen, less easy to understand why it would.

PSG have tended to like a big name, so adding Ronaldo to the mix wouldn't be an issue in that sense. PSG also have enough money to do the deal. However, the club, which has stated its intention to move away from the 'galactico' model, have already signed Kylian Mbappe on an extraordinary contract and also have Neymar and Messi - who spent the best part of 15 years vying with Ronaldo for the right to be acknowledged as the best player in the world - on their books. New coach Christophe Galtier would have a headache if Ronaldo was added to the mix. Not that he would have much say in the matter.

The Independent say Ronaldo is willing to take a huge pay cut to get away from Old Trafford next season and that PSG are one of the options for the star.

Why would they sign Ronaldo?

This kind of makes sense. Napoli attracted Diego Maradona to the club and the Argentina World Cup winner became a hero for helping the side twice claim the Serie A title. They have not won the title since, so what an impression Ronaldo could make at the club. Napoli have also qualified for the Champions League, which is what Ronaldo wants. Yet, financially, this is not easy. Prior to the pandemic, Napoli's revenue was around the same as Everton's, way behind Juventus, who signed Ronaldo with an eye on commercial income, then decided he was too expensive. How would it make any more sense for Napoli?

What are the rumours?
The Athletic report Ronaldo could move to the Italian side, despite the club's owner previously saying signing a striker in their mid-late 30s is not "fine".

Why would they keep Ronaldo?
Ronaldo has a year left on his contract and United are adamant they will not sell. If the club's position does not change, Ronaldo has to remain where he is. Football is never quite so simple though and even for United, there are plusses and minuses to Ronaldo's presence. If he goes, it would allow new manager Erik ten Hag the freedom to build a squad that plays the pressing game he prefers, something that would not be possible in the same way if Ronaldo was still at United. Ten Hag could also adopt a long-term approach, as evidently, Ronaldo, at 37, is not going to be around for too much longer however this season plays out.

However, bringing in a centre forward has not been part of the recruitment plan at United this summer and the options for bringing in a replacement from outside the club are not extensive. Previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as a number nine, but neither are comfortable in that slot.

Verdict
Staying at Old Trafford seems the most likely option but Ronaldo's advisor Jorge Mendes is talking to various clubs to assess the wider interest.

Other destinations

A return to Portugal would have an emotional pull. But surely, given his background, that could only be possible at Sporting, the club that nurtured Ronaldo as a young boy. Sporting have qualified for the group stage of the Champions League, but will be a third seed at best, and it is impossible to conceive they could put together a financial package even remotely on the same scale as Ronaldo could earn elsewhere.

Gareth Bale has just become the latest big-name player to move to Major League Soccer. Former Wolves and Tottenham boss - and Ronaldo's fellow Portuguese, Nuno Espirito Santo - was confirmed as a managerial appointment in Saudi Arabia on Monday. Former Spain World Cup winner Javi Martinez and former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld both play in Qatar, which will host the World Cup this winter.
Evidently, in the latter two cases, money would not be an issue. But one of reasons for Ronaldo wanting to leave Manchester United is because he wants to play at the highest level. None of those competitions is that.

The family of a master of ceremonies in Akwa Ibom, Edwin King, is in grief following his demise after a meal he allegedly took in his girlfriend’s Eket home in April 2022.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the late King was told by his girlfriend, one Splendour Ita, to visit her in her home on Sunday, April 10, 2022, in Eket, where the duo was said to have had a meal together.

It was learnt that King died days later from kidney complications reportedly from food poisoning. A family member of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity told our correspondent that King and Ita were no longer dating when the incident happened.

[b]The family member said, “The two of them were no longer dating when the matter occurred; they broke up months before the incident. Splendour called him for them to get back together and he obliged. On getting to her home in Eket that Sunday afternoon, they both went to eat and that was how the problem started.

“I don’t know if it was both of them who ate the food but what I know is that it was my brother who died. Splendour is still alive, and that is what I don’t understand. We received a call from one of Splendour’s neighbours who told us that our brother was admitted to a private hospital because of food
poisoning.

“We went to the hospital and took King away to Ibom Specialist Hospital, Uyo, where he was diagnosed with an enlarged kidney. I have the medical report with me.

“He died a few days after and Splendour has been on the run since then. They (police) said they arrested her, but I have not seen her with my eyes. Even her family members have been hiding her. They must tell me what happened to Edwin King. They cannot sweep this under the carpet.’’[/b]

Contacted, the state police spokesperson, CSP Odiko Ogbeche-MacDon, said the case was reported to the police and was still being investigated.

“The case was reported to the police. Information from our disposal was that Edwin King went to visit his girlfriend at her home in Eket. After some time, he said he was hungry and they both went out to get shawarma and a bottle of beer, which they ate and drank before returning to the house.

“The lady started having constipation or pains and King took her to the bathroom to see whether he could salvage the situation. After some time, he also began to show signs of stomach ache, too. Our investigation revealed that it was neighbours who later peeped and saw both of them in the bathroom and took them to the hospital in Eket.

“The clinic ran a test to see if it was food poisoning but the hospital couldn’t find anything. While they were there, the mother of the deceased then said they should take King to a specialist whereas Splendour Ita was discharged after some time.

“She, however, continued to experience swelling on her leg and other parts of her body. She couldn’t even walk when I saw her. So, after some time, the deceased family came to me and said they were suspecting that the lady may have poisoned King. We got into the matter and made enquiries and discovered that whatever happened affected both of them.

“They said they had accumulated bills and the hospital refused to release the corpse to them. As a Force, we are not in place to talk about the cause of death. I advised them to have an autopsy done. That is where we stopped. I haven’t heard from them again. I think they want to pin it on the lady. We cannot say she is the one responsible for the death until our investigation includes the autopsy report. Have they taken the autopsy report to the police? Yes, they have.

The doctor said there was an enlarged liver or something. But, what caused it?

“For now, the investigation is still ongoing and we are open to any facts that will help us unravel the cause of death. We are not medical experts and it is the experts that can tell us the cause of death and we are waiting for them. We have not concluded the investigation. If we establish criminality at any point, we would take it up,” he said.

He also said the matter was still open and had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

“The Deputy Commissioner of Police has taken over that case and it is being investigated at the Homicide Section of the SCIID. We are spending low resources at our disposal in ensuring that we can get to the bottom of this,” he added.

In his view, a medical doctor with the Zenith Clinic, Abuja, Dr Chuks Zenith, when presented with the medical report from Ibom Specialist Hospital, said he could not identify any case of food poisoning in the matter.

“From what you are telling me, there is no food poisoning in this matter. There is a case of trauma and swelling. I don’t know where the talk of food poisoning comes in this matter. If there is a bruise somewhere, then there must have been physical trauma and abuse. If there are bruises around the chest wall, drinking beer and eating shawarma wouldn’t have caused that.

“If it was food poisoning as we are made to believe; how would one know the amount of poison to add to the food not to kill one but also know the amount of poison to add to kill the other? The two of them ate the shawarma, drank the beer, got the same reaction but one died? This is not clear. There are some poisons that even a pinch is enough to kill one.’’
