Ahead of the 2023 general election, former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, on Wednesday, advised the Independent National Electoral Commission to keep its sensitive materials for the exercise with pastors and an Islamic human rights group, Muslim Rights Concern.


The PUNCH reports that the Nigerian Bar Association and civil rights groups on Mondaywarned that the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele’s involvement in partisan politics was threatening the 2023 elections.


They also said Emefiele’s membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress had eroded the credibility, of the apex bank, where sensitive materials are kept, during elections.

Prominent Nigerians who spoke separately to The PUNCH condemned Emefiele’s APC membership and his failure to resign while allegedly plottingto contest the 2023 presidency.


But INEC in a statement by Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to its Chairman, said it had taken notice of the latest revelation on Emefiele. It added that it might move ballot papers from the CBN vaults.

“The strategic partnership between the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Independent National Electoral Commission which enables the commission to store its sensitive election
materials with the CBN, has been in place for many years and beneficial in several ways.

“Indeed, there have been various reports that the CBN governor is nursing an intention to run for the office of President. But, he has yet to formally declare his intention to run for the office of president as of today.

“However, if and when he eventually does, the commission will look at the implications and take a decision on what becomes of the long-standing strategic partnership with the CBN,” the statement read.

However, reacting to the development on Wednesday, Sani who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, said the electoral umpire should entrust the ballot papers to the care of “God-fearing” individuals.

In a tweet on his Twitter page, Sani wrote, “INEC materials should be given to the God fearing MURIC and Pastors for safe keeping.”

The Godswill Akpabio Stadium has been chosen to host the CAF confederation cup final slated to hold 20th of May, 2022 as stated by Paul Bassey, the Senior Special Assistant on Sport to the Akwa Ibom State Governor.

The final comes after the semi-final clashes between Orlando Pirates against Al Ahli Tripoli and RS Berkane against TP Mazembe.

After the news of Morocco being handed the hosting of the CAF Champions League on Monday, many sport enthusiasts have thought Nigeria had lost the opportunity to host the final of Africa’s inter-club competition.

But it was clarified by Mr Bassey, who spoke exclusively with PREMIUM TIMES about Nigeria being one of the six countries to have bid for the final of both the Champions League and Confederation Cup matches.

“Nigeria with six other countries bid to the CAF Champions League final and the CAF Confederation Cup final because it is now a one-off as opposed to the former home and win final before.
“It is now held on a neutral ground. CAF sent out people to inspect the stadiums, they came to UYO because when Nigeria bid they presented Uyo as a venue.”

He also added that not only the pitch constituted the selection of Morocco but other things outside the stadium like transportation, medical facilities, etc.

“It is not only the stadium, it’s about the medical facilities, hotels, transport and security also and they came here, at the end of the day CAF decided that Morocco will host the Champions League final.

But Uyo has won the right to host CAF’s second tournament- the Confederations Cup.

Godswill Akpabio, minister of Niger Delta affairs, will declare his intention to run for president on Wednesday.

Anietie Ekong, media aide to Akpabio, confirmed the minister’s intention to declare on Monday.
“Yes, it is true. He will declare on Wednesday,”
Ekong said.

The Niger Delta affairs minister will be up against the likes of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos; Rotimi Amaechi, transportation minister, and Yahaya Bello, Kogi governor; among others for the ticket.

The ruling party is looking at having its presidential primary election between May 30 and June 1.

On Friday, Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of the APC, said the ruling party is yet to decide on the zone which will produce its 2023 presidential candidate.

“I am today privileged to be the chairman of the party. The party is greater than me. The party has not made a decision and I cannot preempt what the party decision will be,” the APC chairman had said.

“We will come out by the grace of God, at the appropriate time [with] the candidate the convention will choose. I do not want to speculate.

“My duty as chairman is to listen to party men, party leaders, stakeholders, to see what is going to be best when the time comes.”
