Canada’s new $10 bill now features Viola Desmond, one of the country’s civil rights activists. Desmond is popular for refusing to leave a "white-only" section of a theater on Nov. 8, 1946 - a decade before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus. Over 70 years after, Desmond was honored last week as the first Black person and the first non-Royal woman ever to be featured alone on Canadian currency. Viola Desmond’s sister, Wanda Robson, was one of the first people in Canada to receive a copy of the new $10 bill. In a Bank of Canada video, she said her sister’s photo on it is "so life-like. It’s as if she’s in this room!" https://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/canadian-black-civil-rights-activist.html?m=1

Nollywod actor Ernest Asuzu has spoken about his ordeals after he suffered a stroke in 2015 and could neither walk nor talk. In a recent chat with Sunday Scoop, Asuzu said: “When I was down with a stroke, my wife was the only one who didn’t forsake me. It was a terrible situation because I did not work for three years, yet I was spending money. I must confess that I was afraid that my wife would leave me at that time. Though the illness was serious, it didn’t affect my sex life. Naturally, I am hyperactive in bed and I don’t joke with sex. I have been married officially for five years.” https://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/i-had-regular-sex-while-battling-with.html

The mother of a privately-educated Nigerian teenager shot dead outside a cinema, has revealed how she warned him against going out. According to EveningStandard, Kelvin Odunuyi, 19, was gunned down as he stood with friends at the entrance of the Vue cinema in Wood Green, at just after 12.30am on Thursday. Witnesses described seeing two masked men on a moped ride past before one opened fire. Mr Odunuyi, a rapper who performed under the name DipDat and was also known as Lampz, was pronounced dead in hospital two hours later. The killing, the first fatal shooting of a teenager in London in 2018, is thought to be part of an escalating “postcode war” between gangs in Wood Green and nearby Tottenham. It was claimed that Mr Odunuyi was not a gang member, but socialised with people who were. His mother, Afishetu Oniru, said he was in the “wrong place at the wrong time”. She said: “He was a lovely jovial boy. He was clever and loved by all who knew him…he had everything going for him.” Oniru said relatives, including his father who runs a property business in Nigeria, had paid her son’s fees at the prestigious £26,000-a-year Fulneck School in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, and that he had ambitions to work in the oil industry. She said: “I have always lived in London but when we moved to Wood Green for a short time I got scared for my family. We now live in Harrow and I told him not to go back to Wood Green to see friends. But he did and now he is dead after being shot dead in a random attack. Police said it was wrong place at wrong time. I am devastated. I knew he would be safe at home with me but he went there and now he is dead.” There have been no arrests. https://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/i-warned-him-mom-of-nigerian-teenager.html

The office of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte shared video of him watching bulldozers plow over “smuggled luxury vehicles” by corrupt politicians on Tuesday right in their presence. In the video, an announcer can be heard listing the year and make of the vehicles as roofs caved in and hoods collapsed. The Philippine Star reported Duterte said a week earlier that importers were auctioning smuggled cars to avoid paying custom duties. In the past, Duterte's tactics in cracking down on crime have at times drawn international criticism. check the video below: https://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/video-philippines-president-collects.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcMMOlpFEnY

Saudi Arabia government isn't fair to their women. why are they keeping their women from driving in the first place. this is not fair at all. |
Women can’t currently drive in Saudi Arabia but the ban is set to be lifted in June and Saudi women are over the moon about this and have begun taking driving lessons in preparation for that time. Last year Saudi Arabia promised to lift a longstanding ban on female drivers as part of a series of widespread reforms designed to ease gender segregation in the country. From June the ultra-conservative kingdom will allow women to drive cars for the first time ever. Saudi women were ecstatic to take to the roads as they learned to drive for the first time in their lives on the campus of Effat University on Monday. Around 15 female students took part in the lesson, which was run by the Ford Motor Company and designed for woman with no prior experience of driving, aiming to improve driver safety. The workshop began with a talk about road safety, car accidents and texting at the wheel before the women undertook a number of practical lessons which included wearing goggles which made it feel like they were drunk. Before long the women were given the chance to drive a car through cones in a car park. http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/joy-and-nerves-for-saudi-women-on-their.html?m=1
