Isaac Adewole , minister of health, says consumption taxes on products like alcohol and tobacco should be increased and used for the funding of healthcare. Speaking on Tuesday at THISDAY healthcare financing policy dialogue in Abuja, Adewole said Nigeria has the lowest health budget in the world. He said health financing in Nigeria is mostly from out-of-pocket spending. Out-of-pocket spendings are costs incurred on health care services that are not reimbursed by insurance. The minister said: “as a result, OOP spending accounts for 75.2 percent of total health expenditure among the highest in the world and 25 percent of households spend more than 10 percent of their household consumption health; a sign that more people are prone to poverty traps if they fall ill, for a country of our size. This is not acceptable. In the issue of tax rate, 5 percent, our value added tax is one of the lowest in the world and there are opportunities to expand this by increasing taxes on the consumption of harmful products such as alcohol and tobacco . In particular, our tobacco excise rates of 20 percent are well below the 75 percent World Health Organisation benchmark.” Adewole urged states to invest in the health sector rather than allow the federal government shoulder the responsibility alone. He said: “ This is my third year as a minister. When there’s disease outbreak in Calabar, there is diarrhoea in Kano, they say it’s the minister of health’s problem. Where are the commissioners of health? We should not assume that they do not have any role to play and everything is on the federal ministry of health; that is wrong. “The states have a role to play, they have responsibilities, there are people in those states who need to be taken care of. But everything is for the federal government to resolve". He added that. "maybe, when oil prices were high and there was a lot of money, the federal government could take on everything. The states are not improving their health workforce; they are not employing nurses, they are not employing doctors, they are not even paying their salaries. At the state level, a consultant in the state earns close to what the most junior doctor at the federal level will earn. That is where we have a problem. So, we need to work together.” http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/taxes-on-tobacco-and-alcohol-should-be_8.html?m=1

Gregory Bland, 55; Temitayo David, 55; and Toyosi Ogunleye, 43, have been charged with theft by receiving. Deputies said they began investigating after a California company was not paid for an order of 40 microscopes totaling $11,555.20 that was shipped to the warehouse on Eastgate Place in Snellville. The order had appeared to come from an existing customer, but investigators learned that the microscope company had actually been victim of a business email compromise scheme, which is a type of phishing scam. Investigators went to the warehouse on Feb. 23. They encountered Bland, who said he was allowed to live at the building in exchange for accepting packages for the owner, David, according to a sheriff’s office release. During a search, investigators found the microscopes and other stolen items, including medical equipment and construction equipment, the release said. All three suspects were arrested at the warehouse. David is being held without bond in the Gwinnett County Detention Center. Bland and Ogunleye were released on $11,200 bond. http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/serial-rapist-sentenced-to-72-years.html?m=1

The serial rapist who on Tuesday begged the court to hang him for his heinous acts, has been sentenced to an effective 72 years in jail, Zimbabwe. According to Herald, regional magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga had sentenced Charles Magombedze to 78 years in prison, but conditionally suspended six years. Magombedze was convicted on eight counts of rape on his own plea of guilty. He shocked the court when he requested the hangman’s noose, saying he was unable to exorcise the evil spirit that led him into committing the crimes if left alive. Malunga said Magombedze deserved severe punishment as he behaved like a beast when he raped the victims by using dangerous weapons like iron bars, axes and machetes when he committed the offences. Magombedze raped a woman before abusing a pupil at Chibaya High School in June last year. In the same month, he raped another woman who was doing laundry along Tugwi River in Chivi. In October the same year, the convict raped another woman who was going to church. He also raped a police constabulary’s wife, then raped a 14- year-old girl, who was herding cattle in January this year. He raped another woman after waylaying her at Charumbira Farm. In the same month, Magombedze raped a child he found sleeping in a hut at Jeka Village. He raped another woman after threatening her near Stephen business centre. He also abused a woman in a garden at Rukanda Farm in the same month after hitting her with a brick. Magombedze raped another woman whom he found in a garden along Tugwi River. The serial rapist also handcuffed and raped another woman at Shokoni Business Centre in Chivi. He raped another one at Razi Business Centre in the same district while she was coming from hospital. Magombedze also faces attempted murder charges after stabbing a woman five times whom she failed to rape after she managed to flee. On his initial appearance in court on Tuesday, Magombedze said he was a member of a Satanic cult whose goal was to spill blood and to have unprotected sex to breed another Satanic generation. http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2018/03/serial-rapist-sentenced-to-72-years.html?m=1

A very touching story of women standing up for one of their own has gone viral on social media. According to Kutu Ameji who shared the story, a male driver tried to intimidate a female driver in traffic but the woman refused to be intimidated and stood her ground. The man kept using the usual line of "I am a man, I have your type at home," to try to bring her down but she wasn't having it. Later, when the man and other men tried to deflate the woman's tyre, many women stuck in traffic came out of their cars and stood guard around the woman's car. omololu2020:And who establish the school in the first place. is it not former governor olagunsoye Oyinlola that established that great edifice. till today the people of that community where the school was located are appreciating him. if you don't know the present isn't funding that school. it's the revenue they generate that's been used to fund that school. Infact when Ogbeni started paying the workers and the teachers half salaries, the management of the school was paying the lecturers full salaries. thanks to Oyinlola that built that school. |

omololu2020:i hope you know that it was during that period that osun State University was created. and till today, their academic calendar is still stable. your argument isn't genuine here. post dagbolu international market project here. since 7 years ago he proposed the project, but till today, nothing has been done on that. not to talk of dilapidated schools in the villages. you just have to argue with salient points and not ranting on nairaland. his second term tenure is disastrous. all the projects that ought to have take him and his contractors 6-8 months will be done after 2 years. all is well. |
