The first pilot project of "Operation light up rural Nigeria", which was commissioned on 13th January, 2013, by President Goodluck Jonathan himself, in a village called Shape, near Abuja, has witnessed one year of uninterrupted power supply.

Disclosing this in an exclusive interview with Diamond Report, this Thursday, the Lead Consultant and the designer of the off mini grid Solar Energy Electric Technology of the Federal Ministry of Power, Engr Ifeanyi Damian Eze, said the prosecution of this project was in fulfillment of Mr. President's promise of at least some lighting points, at the door step of ever Nigerian, within or outside the Federal grid.

The project, Engr Eze said, is thus clearly, a follow-up to Mr. President's determination in making Nigeria one of the most productive and industrial nations in Africa through constant, uninterrupted electricity supply. He added that, this was part of Mr. President's commitment to the total utilization of untapped energies for service to the Nigerian populace, through renewable energy, biomass technology, thermo-dynamics, wind energy, etc.

The Engr continued "This dream has begun to manifest, with the celebration of one year uninterrupted electricity energy supply by the Shape villagers; an occasion that was celebrated in grand style this Monday, the 2nd of February, 2015."



Apparently in a mood which portrayed fulfillment as the Lead Consultant, Engr Eze said "this development astonishes many people who knew Shape village before this rural electricity project, because it has changed the face of the village, with the villages quickly taking advantage of the numerous economic gains that go with availability of electricity"

These advantages he enumerated as follows: communication is massively enhanced, as cellphones are easily charged and used by Individuals to reach one another; urban migration is reduced, as people now stay back in their houses to watch various television programs- especially football, instead of trooping out to the township for such activities; hair-dressing and saloon business have begun to boom, power is available to easily pump water at borehole sites; the solar searchlights are available to enhance and standardize security; lights are available everywhere, thus encouraging night studies by students; including adults; thus enhancing education; access to the internet is booming as laptops are regularly charged for browsing and people in the healthcare sector comfortably use electricity to store vaccines in their refrigerators.

Engr Eze further remarked that the Shape electricity project and its success story came to be real due to the unreserved commitment of the Federal Ministry of Power, ably led by Prof Nebo, adding that, this was coming as a trail-blazer for more and more successful projects through out the country, in line with the dream of President Jonathan.

Diamond Report correspondent who was there live, reported that the ceremony attracted many dignitaries and stakeholders, including, the Hon. Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, his permanent secretary, Amb. (Dr) ThankGod Igali, the Senate Committee Chairman on Power, Senator Philip Aduda, among others. Several traditional dances organized by the happy villagers, were also reported to have graced the occasion, and added colour to it.

Popular Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh is one of the people who were quite close with late Muna Obiekwe and it looks like she’s still having difficulties believing his sad death.

She shared a touching tribute today on her Instagram page:

“Just sitting here gazing at a picture of a boy I know but now gone because of an illness that would have been managed. The thought of his lifeless body brings me so much pain and sadness and it is not because I was close to him nor that I cared so much about him but just a mere reflection of how wicked the world is, the extent we go just to hide our pain to avoid being a laughing stock, Gossip item, abused, bullied on social medias and even betrayed by some trusted friends & even our so called Families

Oh yes that is the awful world we live in, We develop thick skin because we’re betrayed almost everyday by people we love and trust so now we try to go through the difficult and trying times alone without sharing with anyone or letting them know what we’re going through.

Be a Neighbor and a friend that really cares, try and be trustworthy in this wicked and heartless world. I know that there are some good people out there, where re they? We all can’t be evil na, let’s show others hope, love and reason to live again, a tree can’t make a forest, we need each other in one way or the other.

It will be recalled that Muna Obiekwe is dead. Despite lots of rumours and speculations surrounding that tragedy, multiple sources, including TheNation, Linda Ikeji Blog, others confirm that the actor has actually passed away.

Following the January 2 attacks on Baga town by Boko Haram body counts across four hospitals in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital have put the number of people killed by the insurgents to over 1,398 so far.

The Daily Post gathered in a visit to the state specialist hospital, the University of Maiduguri Teaching hospital, the Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern hospital and General Muhammadu Shuwa Nursing Home, confirmed that each hospital received not less than 100 corpses from the beginning of this year, with the specialists hospital and UMTH having between 500 and 600 corpses as a result of attacks in close by villages.

Lawan Alhaji Modu, one of the leaders of the people of Gubio local government area of Borno State, said he lost 26 members of his family in the attacks.

On January 19, 2015, Monday, hundreds of people from four villages near the devastated Baga town were also forced to flee after a warning from Boko Haram militants, witnesses and community leaders said, according to AFP.

Abubakar Gamandi, head of the Borno State fishermen’s union, said residents from the affected villages told him Boko Haram fighters had visited “and asked people to leave — or else”.

One women who fled Baga to the Borno State capital, Maiduguri, also confirmed that she joined the crowds fleeing the four villages.

The villages lie some 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Baga and although there was no confirmation that Boko Haram had moved in, it will likely raise fears that the group plans to push south.

Another woman, Aisa Aribe, who arrived in Maiduguri from Baga on Monday, said Boko Haram were still in control of the town and the streets were strewn with the dead.

“Dead bodies are all over the town and surrounding villages. They are decomposing and there is no one to bury them,” said Aribe.

She said she was among hundreds of women held by the group, initially in a girls’ boarding school and at the home of a local senator.

“They later separated the young women and beautiful ones and took them to a different location,” said added.

“They told the rest of us that we had the choice to either stay or leave and join ‘infidels’ in Monguno ,65 kilometres away where many Baga residents fled.

“They derisively told us we better stay with them because we have nowhere to go since they ‎killed all our husbands.”

Boko Haram began a campaign of terrorism in Nigeria in 2009, attempting to create an Islamic state and to deny Western-style education. Thousands of people have been killed, mostly in northeastern Nigeria since the attacks began.
