North becoming Nigeria’s problem – ACF chieftain By Emeka Mamah KADUNA—THE Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, yesterday, said that the North was gradually becoming a problematic area because of recurring cases of ethno-religious crises among other issues. He called for the cooperation of leaders in the region to reverse the trend. Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees of ACF, Senator Ladan Shuni, who made this known in Kaduna said the litany of problems bedeviling the North were not the past leaders of the region adding that the new crop of leaders in the area must take responsibility for whatever is happening and try to redress it. Governor Namadi Sambo of Kaduna State (left) with his Niger State Counterpart Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu at the emergency meeting . Ladan who spoke during ACF’s Board of Trustees, BOT, meeting in Kaduna, also said the North lacked the enabling environment for the implementation of government policies and programmes, noting that it was the duty of all the northern leaders, past and present to resolve the problems. According to the ACF chieftain, there was an urgent need for urgent solution to the issues affecting the old North if the area is to be developed even as he insisted that the present situation, if allowed to continue would not only jeopardize the peace of the North but ensure a bleak future for the youth. He said: “There are a lot of crises in the North; there have been Boko Haram, Kala Kato, and the present Jos crisis. The North is becoming the problem of the country and it is the North that should come together and solve the problem. “Apart from the issue of begging, there are other problems that were hitherto not known or associated with the North; but kidnapping is even here in the North. The quality of our education has not only reduced but has also deteriorated and there is unemployment everywhere and no sign of improvement. From the foregoing it is now the duty of the leaders both past and present and many who are here present to save the north in particular and the country in general, because as it is, the future is bleak.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/01/28/north-becoming-nigerias-problem-acf-chieftain/

Oshiomhole to protest in Abuja By Osagie OtaborPublished TodayNewsRating: Unrated Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has attributed Sunday’s kidnap of the State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Peter Imasuen, to the removal of soldiers from the state’s joint security outfit codenamed "Operation Thunderstorm." He vowed to take the protest to Abuja as he noted that the soldiers’ withdrawal has contributed to the reduced security situation in the state. Oshiomhole spoke yesterday when CAN members led by Rev. Fr. Richard Ofere visited him. Oshiomhole decried the politicisation of the peoples’ safety and security. He added that the withdrawal was purely on political grounds. The Governor directed the police to provide security for all places of worship and around clergymen. Oshiomhole also said his administration recently ordered for communication gadgets worth over N200 million for security agencies after providing over 100 vehicles for the police . His words: "I am going to Abuja this evening. I am going to the National Security Adviser to warn them that they cannot expose our people to this kind of insecurity. It is unacceptable. Government must be seen, if nothing else, to guarantee the citizens their protection. "I feel I have failed as a governor to protect the lives of our people but whatever we have to do will be done and I have sent for all those who should know that everybody must do what needs to be done. We can never surrender to criminals; we will never surrender to them and we will put them out of business. "This office is only worth it if I am here on the strength of the people and I will vacate it any day it is clear to me that the people don’t want me to be here and I hope that our political class will accept this as a reality otherwise Nigeria is in great danger". Juju scare: Ekiti Assembly sets up probe panel Latest News Jan 20, 2010 The Ekiti State House of Assembly has set up a panel to probe the source of fetish objects found at the assembly’s premises last week. On Monday, fetish objects, stained with blood were discovered within the vicinity of the offices of the Speaker, Tunji Odeyemi and that of the clerk of the assembly. The incident created a scare and disrupted the sitting of the house for one week. Both lawmakers and workers deserted the assembly complex, as they were afraid of being killed by the objects. The Clerk of the House, Mr Akintunde Famoyegun, said in Ado-Ekiti yesterday that the leadership of the house was interested in knowing those who conspired to put the fetish objects at the Assembly. He expressed hope that the panel’s report would enable the assembly to know those who were responsible for the reprehensible act. “We suspect there was a collaboration by our personnel with outsiders in putting the fetish objects at the assembly but we cannot establish that for now until the investigation panel submits its reports. “We recognise the porosity and weakness of our security system but that notwithstanding, we are tackling the challenge”. “This will be the second time fetish object would be found at the assembly complex and with this development, we have seen the need to beef up the security at the Assembly for such a thing not to occur again, ” he said. The clerk added that as part of security measures, a letter had been sent to the State Police Commissioner for deployment of additional police officers to the Assembly complex. He added that there was the need to fence the assembly complex. According to him, “We have written to the Police Commissioner for additional policemen at the Assembly, especially the mobile ones. “The Assembly will also work on the fencing of the premises immediately this year’s budget is approved”. Famoyegun added that the Assembly’s staff had been counselled on the need to be more security conscious, as well as refuse to be induced in whatever form, by ‘external forces.’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/01/20/juju-scare-ekiti-assembly-sets-up-probe-panel/comment-page-1/#comment-139373 |
Lawyer kidnapped, murdered Crime Guard Jan 15, 2010 My son’s captors collected ransom and still murdered him, laments dad By Anayo Okoli and Enyim Enyim THURSDAY, December 17, 2009, was a normal day for the Iheaku family. Mr. Chijioke Nnaemeka Iheaku, a lawyer and industrialist had started the day without any inkling or fear that danger of any sort awaited him. Chijioke, a handsome 40- year- old Osina , Imo State born, had temporary relocated from Lagos to the East to monitor his multi-million naira factory in Owerri, the Imo State capital and had called his wife, Nonye that ill-fated day to crack his usual jokes with her and his four lovely kids, three boys and a girl, aged between one and seven years respectively. He had happily played with them on the phone and promised to see them in a matter of days when they would come down to meet him and other members of the family, reputed for stock fish trade in the whole of the Eastern states for the Christmas celebration. Happily satisfied that his family was okay, Chijioke proceeded to his multi-million naira factory, GINCOL Projects Ltd, a state-of-the-art plastic and PVC manufacturing outfit located at the industrial estate of Owerri. The one year old factory has attracted the attention of the Imo State government which was proud that a young man could have such vision and transform into a project that has provided jobs for hundreds of people. Late night work gave him to his captors Chijioke, who did t it? His penchant for hard work always made him work late into the nights in his office to ensure that things are done the way he planned them. So, on December 17, 2009, and at about 7.30 00pm, he left his office, having satisfied himself that the day had gone well without an inkling that danger was lurking. Just few meters from the gate of his factory, he was said to had sighted some people who drove ferociously and blocked his way, and ordered his driver to stop at gun point. The hoodlums reportedly forced Chijioke to their own jeep and zoomed off. That was the beginning of his trouble. He had been kidnapped. On getting to know about his travail, the family promptly incidented the matter at a police station in Owerri. Contact and ransom Later, his captors made contact with the family and demanded a ransom of N300 million. But on December 26, after holding him for 10 days, the hoodlums made contact again, this time, they brought down the ransom to N7 million. Worried by the fate of their son, the family raised the money and took it to the agreed location at about 10pm. Sadly, after collecting the money, the hoodlums directed his people to the booth of their vehicle where the lifeless body of Chijioke lay. They had tortured him to death; it was presumed. This is because a careful examination of his body revealed no sign of gun shot wounds. To say that his death has since thrown the entire family into despair and mourning, is to say the least. To many, the death of Iheaku may sound incredible, but it is undoubtedly true that what appeared to be a kidnap, a brisk business now in vogue in the country, especially the South East zone, has turned out to be a new scientific method of assassinating marked victims on the ‘executioners’ list. This is the firm belief of the family of Chief Godson Nwosu Iheaku. Entering the premises of Iheaku at the GRA, Onitsha, one could easily read the mood of the family as uneasy calm pervaded the massive compound. It, therefore, took a painstaking perseverance to get the father of the deceased to speak. And as he sat dejectedly on the dining chair in his sitting room at the grand floor, tears rolled uncontrollably down his cheeks. He sat back on the chair, cleared his throat before narrating the tragedy that befell the family on December 26, 2009. Dad recounts ordeal He started by clearing any doubts that his late son was killed because he was either owing somebody or defrauded a business partner. He, however, conceded that Chijioke took loans from two banks with which he was able to establish the gigantic plastic manufacturing plant that has given jobs opportunity to about 200 Nigerians . The 72- year- old energetic man said the late son had wanted to establish the plant outside Imo State, his home state, but he advised him to set it up there because charity begins at home. “It is a very big establishment which is situated at Industrial Layout in Owerri. This factory is not too old but it is moving very fast. He has the technology, he has the knowledge, and he has the ability to the extent that as it is now, they don’t even meet the demand of the buyers. Most of the buyers who have been buying from other sources have decided to turn over, buying from him because of the quality, efficiency and goodwill which they have established. “But I think, if you ask me, I will say that maybe people are not happy the way his factory is moving. People are not happy but I don’t know them, those who are not happy. But I believe very strongly that this is a case of malice, transparent malice, acrimony and animosity. This is my assessment.” Continuing, Chief Iheaku said, “ precisely on 17th December 2009, Chijioke went to Benin to explore the possibility of establishing a depot there. As a matter of fact, for the past one week, he was not in that (his) factory. It was on December 17, that he came from Onitsha to explore the possibility of establishing a depot there. That same day, he went to Owerri where the factory is situated, went through all the records of what they are doing, supervised all the activities going on there, and at the end of the day, he decided to retire with his driver. That was the beginning of the journey to his untimely death. At a point, they now said, ‘this is what we want. Bring this money, come and take your man’. So, at that point in time, we thought it was a case of kidnapping which is rampant today in all parts of this country, particularly in the South Eastern area of the country. But let me say with emphasis that the same date, the same day this happened, this matter was reported to the police at Owerri, Umuahia Zone 9, and the Inspector General of Police and us did not hear of anything until we saw the remains of him in their boot.” Pa Iheaku believed that the police would do everything possible to unravel the mystery behind the kidnap and murder of his first son. He also appealed to the Federal Government to give a directive to the police and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice was done in this matter. In his lamentation, he said the worrisome aspect of the matter was that the so-called kidnappers collected ransom from his family even after killing his son, and he prayed God to reward them accordingly. “When we now agreed with the kidnappers where this money should be dropped, and the time it should be dropped, we complied. We sent the same driver who was driving Chijioke at the point he was kidnapped and one Onuorah Onyejekwe. They met the kidnappers at night at the place it was agreed and they asked, ‘where is our money? Where is our money?’ The money was given to them in a very big bag where it was packed. Ransom paid after victim’s murder They took the money, put the money inside their car, opened their booth and delivered the dead body and ordered the people to leave the vicinity, otherwise they would be killed. That was how we saw it. It means they meant to kill him, not just to collect the ransom So, when that also happened, we reported the matter to the police again. Right now, the body is lying at Federal Medical Centre Owerri. We have written petitions to the police. We have written to the IGP Ogbonna Onovo, AIG Zone 9, Umuahia, State Police Command Owerri and we have even informed the Governor of Imo State in writing. We have informed the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, we have informed the Representative of Ideato North Local Government in the Imo State House of Assembly, the Senator representing Orlu and Oguta, Federal Representative of Ideato Federal Constituency. As a matter of fact, we have informed all the authorities which we think we should inform about this incident.” As if the septuagenarian was resigning to fate, he intoned, “This is the way we saw it and right now, I and my family are in agony and pains, we are in sorrow, fasting and wailing; but everything put together. We are leaving everything in the hands of the Almighty God. However, we are very sure, absolutely sure, that almighty God knows all these questions. He knows the faces of those who committed the crime, their names, where they are, what they have done with the money they collected after killing my son.” Deceased’s younger brother speaks. Speaking to Saturday Vanguard, his younger brother and the third son of the family who is also a lawyer, Mr. Izunna Iheaku, said he spoke with his late brother two days before he was brutally murdered by the yet to be identified assassins. He said his brother had sent him a text message which he also replied, saying that it bothered on what he wanted him to do for him and not connected with the incident. He described his late brother as a peaceful man who wanted to do good to everybody around him, including those working in his factory. He said his late brother had never mentioned any threat to his life to him neither has anybody threaten him too. According to him, the death of Chijioke is a huge lose to him and the family. The driver alsoRecounting his experience, the driver to the deceased, Mr. Christopher Okereke, a sixty- seven year- old man who also drove Chijioke on that fateful day said, “My boss had after the days job asked me to drop him off where he will pass the night and take back the vehicle to the factory. But as soon as we left the premises of the factory to the front of the gate we saw three hefty men well armed with guns who double- crossed us with a Toyota Hilux and ordered me to stop. As soon as they stopped us, the men bundled me and my master out of the vehicle put threw us in their own vehicle and drove away to a destination where I can not remember now. It was when they brought the corpse of Chijioke that we started crying and they quickly warned us that we should not make any noise, otherwise they will waste us. Our saviour was an on_coming vehicle that distracted their attention and it was at that point that we quickly carried the corpse of Chijioke and put him in our pick_up, and drove away”. Whether it be case of assassins or kidnap, police must find killers As he is billed to be buried on January 15, 2010, what the family and indeed all who know this amiable young man demand from relevant security agencies is that his killers should be brought to book. The people are questioning whether the sad incident which led to the death of their beloved son was actually a case of kidnapping or assassination; this mystery they say, the police must unravel. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/01/15/lawyer-kidnapped-murdered/ |

Ogun: Criminals on the rampage By Punch Editorial Board, Published: Friday, 8 Jan 2010 There has been a surge in criminal activities in Ogun State, prompting questions as to the effectiveness of the state’s security system. Armed robbery and other violent crimes have become rampant in the last one month. Daredevil armed robbers recently killed a Divisional Police Officer and two other policemen in Ogere during an attack on a bank in the town. The DPO, Simon Otene, was said to be on the premises of the Ogere Police Station when the robbers struck in the neighbouring bank. The attack on the police station was evidently to pave the way for a hitch-free operation in the bank. A few days ago, there was another attack on a bank in Ibafo by a gang of 15 armed robbers, resulting in the death of two persons, including a policeman. The Ogere and Ibafo robberies and killings occurred a few days after an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Omolodun Oladokun, was killed by rioters in Ijebu-Ife during a mayhem that led to the loss of several lives. Shortly before the two robbery incidents, there was a massive raid on banks in the Ijebu area by men of the underworld, which forced the affected financial institutions to shut down for one week to protest the incessant attacks. What is baffling is that the response of security agencies has been slow and inadequate. For instance, the police and the monarch of Alagbole area in Ogun State have been locked in a needless controversy over the alleged prevalence of robberies and assassinations in the area. The traditional ruler of Alagbole, Oba Ayoola Enitan, had reportedly raised the alarm that suspected robbers and assassins were terrorising residents of Alagbole and Akute. Enitan, therefore, in a statement, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, to beef up security in the two areas. The monarch alleged that more than five persons had been killed by suspected assassins and that the police were yet to make any arrest in connection with the cases. But rather than earnestly investigating the monarch’s claims with a view to restoring normalcy in the affected areas, the police command has been disputing the ruler’s statement. The security lapse in Ogun State has endured for a long time. When the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Mr. Ashimu Argungu, assumed duties early in 2009, he vowed to get to the root of the insecurity. Shortly before his coming, crime had been rampant, leading to the redeployment of the state’s former Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ayeni and his deputy, Okey Ikemefuna. Things reached an alarming point when a DPO in Lafenwa, Mr. Isiaka Okeola, was gunned down by suspected robbers. The state had earlier been engulfed in political violence. Despite the pledges by the government and police authorities, the security situation has not improved. In April last year, suspected robbers killed a brother of the Ifo Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Sikirulai Ogundele, and made away with his car. The deceased, Mr. Mukaila Ogundele, was returning to Abeokuta in company with his brother when the incident occurred. Suspected assassins were also said to have attacked the Chairman, Ijebu East Local Government, Mr. Tunde Oladunjoye. In the same month, a bureau de change operator in Ijebu Ode, Alhaji Umaru Usman, was killed by suspected bandits. Based on cases reported to the police as at the end of 2007, the National Bureau of Statistics said Ogun State was one of the seven states where armed robbery cases were prevalent. Others are Oyo, Federal Capital Territory, Imo, Rivers, Cross River and Kano. Despite its rising urbanisation and a common boundary with Lagos, Ogun State has not put in place visible measures to tackle the various security challenges. Conversely, its neighbour, Lagos, has confronted the challenge with a well-equipped and properly motivated anti-crime outfit, which has yielded good results. Today, it is believed that many of the hoodlums dislodged from Lagos may have found Ogun and other neighbouring states their new haven. There are also strong indications that weapons believed to have been used by political thugs since 2003 are still circulating in the state. Ogun has to create and maintain a peaceful atmosphere of law and order in order to derive maximum benefits from its proximity to Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital. Since it is evidently unwise to leave every security issue to the Federal Government, the governor, as the chief security officer, should work with the police authorities to revamp the security system. The police should go beyond mounting extortion checkpoints to effective intelligence-gathering and crime bursting. As a rapidly urbanising state, Ogun may become unattractive to investors if the worsening climate of insecurity is not quickly tamed. Pastor, 4 Others bag 71 year imprisonment over fraud The saying that whatever a man sows he reaps, rightly captures the conviction of Pastor Michael Spring Inyang and four others whose hope of enjoying the proceeds of crime was dashed as they were made to spend christmas and begin the new year in prison after the courts handed them various jail terms shortly before 2009 came to an end. Inyang, the proprietor of Christian Millionaire Club is to spend the next four years behind the bar after Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Lagos High Court found him quilty on all 17 count charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The pastor who used the name of God to defraud hundreds of his followers began his scam in 2006, when he registered an organisation known as Christian Millionaires Club through which he persuaded victims to part with their resources with an assurance that bountiful rewards await them here on earth and in heaven. The convict also told his victims that his club was affiliated to a popular Christian body in U.S.A.and as such whatever they contribute would be rewarded in manifold at the end of the year. This led many of the victims to sell their properties, while some borrowed money from the banks to invest in the club. Almost immediately, Pastor Inyang’s life changed for the better, he moved from one room apartment in Egbeda to a duplex in a choice area in Lagos while he bought state of the art cars to complement his new status. But their hope was dashed when at the end of the year, Inyang was no where to be found. So in 2007, the case was reported to the EFCC and he was later arrested. After the completion of investigation, he was arraigned before Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of Ikeja High Court where he was eventually convicted. Also convicted at the end of 2009 was a former corps member, Mr. Alli Olumide Monsuru The convict, who has HND in Mass Communication was on his compulsory one year youth service in Bauchi in 2007 when the greed in him pushed him to leave his duty post and travelled to Lagos where he went to the notorious Oluwole market to buy 259 pieces of fake travellers cheque. He was subsequently arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja when he was about to board a Virgin Nigeria aircraft to South Africa. advertisement When the NDLEA officials at the airport searched his luggage, they discovered counterfeit travellers cheques concealed in three pairs of shoes. The convict was later handed over to the EFCC. After a thorough investigation, the ex-corps member was arraigned before Justice J.E. Shakharo of the Federal High Court Lagos in 2008 on a 23 count charge bordering on forgery and possession of counterfeit foreign cheque. The prosecution called four witnesses and in December 2009, he was found guilty on all the counts. He was consequently convicted and sentenced to three years and two months imprisonment. Also, Mr. Ikecukwu Ogbu is to spend the next five years in prison custody as pronounced by Justice Oyewole. He pleaded guilty to all the eight counts charge leveled against him bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment on each count. The prison term is to start after Ogbu who is serving a prison term for another offence must have completed the first prison term. For Benjamin Aniegbo Aifubhekan, it came to him as a rude shock when few days to Christmas Justice Mufutau Olokooba of ikeja high court sentenced him to three years imprisonment without an option of fine. Ekwueme’s, Ojukwu’s supremacy battle deepens By Our ReporterPublished TodayNewsRating: Unrated •Pentecostal churches team up for ALP The supremacy battle between former Vice-President Dr. Alex Ekwueme and Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu over who wins the governorship election in Anambra State is deepening. Pentecostal churches in the state are equally slugging it out between two of their members, Mike Ikemefuna Nwafor of the African Liberation Party (ALP) and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of Hope Democratic Party (HDP). Ekwueme and his old Aguata Forum are routing for Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ojukwu, leader of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is drumming support for Governor Peter Obi, APGA’s candidate. Nwafor is a pastor in the Grace of God Church Worldwide, while Ukachukwu owns an outreach ministry. A pastor with the Grace of God church told The Nation yesterday that the pentecostal churches in the state want Nwafor to win the election. He said members in Ghana, Tanzania, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and others would storm Nigeria on February 6. "We are taking Nwafor’s race as our own because he is one of our finest pastors and this is to tell you we are not relenting in making sure he becomes the next governor of Anambra State", he said. Ukachukwu’s outreach ministry is also mobilising people to vote for Ukachukwu. It said Ukachukwu employed over 5,000 youths through his NICCUS Industries at Obosi near Onitsha. Ojukwu has been campaigning for Obi despite his weak health. Ekwueme last week hosted Soludo and some members of old Aguata Forum in his country home at Oko. In a communiqué signed by 38 leaders representing different communities, the forum said: "Stakeholders unanimously resolved to endorse Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the PDP candidate as the best hope for positive transformational change in Anambra State. "Stakeholders resolved to do everything possible to back Soludo’s campaign and sell his programme to the people of Anambra State and to enlist the support of other patriots and leaders of Anambra State to deliver the Soludo/Anosike ticket on February 6, 2010. "Stakeholders expressed gratitude to the convener, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, for strongly endorsing Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, which is a historic development, considering that he has never publicly sponsored any governorship candidate in past elections. "Stakeholders are calling on the people of old Aguata Union (OAU), in particular, and Anambra State, in general, to turn out en masse on February 6 to vote for Prof. Soludo and the PDP", it said http://thenationonlineng.net/web2/articles/31281/1/Ekwuemes-Ojukwus-supremacy-battle-deepens/Page1.html |
