An armed robbery attack last weekend in which a 23-year-old man died while three others sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, has sent jitters down the spines of residents.
The incident took place at Kano Street of the Onitsha Main Market. Since the coming of the Special Police Squad to deal with series of kidnap and armed robbery in the state the people have enjoyed peace and the serenity like in the olden times before the upsurge of the violent crimes that forced Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, to send the squad.
According to eyewitnesses, the four-man robbery gang, which operated on two motorbikes, stormed the market around 2.00pm Saturday and attacked a shop that deals on weave-on, belonging to one Mr. John Ogbu, where they carted away about N2 million.
The source disclosed further that while the robbers were robbing the shop a mob was said to have gathered in front of the shop which sent fears of being lynched into the robbers, which resulted in the indiscriminate shootings by one of the robbers.
“In the process” continued the source, “the victim, Okechukwu Onuh, an apprentice was shot on the chest resulting in his death few minutes after, and while three others who were rushed to a nearby hospital sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Onitsha Central Police Station, Mr. Yusuf Abdul, was evasive to confirm the incident as he said he was in a meeting.
Also, the Police Spokesman in the state, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, said the matter has not been reported to the Command but promised to make enquiries to get the details of the robbery.
Meanwhile, some traders are not happy with the Police in the city who were said to have mounted a road block few meters from the scene of the incident, lamenting that if the Police had challenged the robbers especially after the robbers opened fire on helpless citizens, the robbers would not have escaped.
They therefore want the Police hierarchy to overhaul various police formations in the city to ensure adequate security of lives and property especially during this Yuletide.

*jona: Anambra Records More Road Accidents’
By Chukwujekwu Ilozue , Reporter, Onitsha
Statistics from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State command, has shown that there were more road accidents in the state in the first half of this year than last year.
Though the sector Commander, Mr. Ayobami Omiyale, said the entire accident figure for 2009 was not ready, he said that figures in respect of the first half of the year showed an increase in accident cases than last year.
Omiyala said that last year, 168 cars, 168 buses, 110 lorries and 218 motorcycles were involved in 431 crashes. From these accidents, he said, 409 people were injured while 138 persons were killed.
In the first half of this year, he said, 87 cars, 88 buses, 122 motorcycles and 58 lorries were involved in 217 crashes in which 169 persons were injured and 104 people killed.
He said that the Umunya section of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway where 10 vehicles were involved in road accident in which 14 people died last October 10 has remained a death trap.
According to him, just last week another petrol tanker loaded with petrol fell there. The only difference is that this time help came quickly. The driver of the vehicle was not wounded and so he got out and locked the manifold and only little quantity of fuel licked until the next morning when another tanker came for assistance.
Similarly, on Tuesday night another lorry and a passenger bus crashed at the area though not exactly where the inferno occurred but there was no loss of life, he said.
Omiyale advised motorists who journey through Anambra roads to travel patiently and go at slow speed, maintain the speed limit because the entire Federal road, according to him, is a construction area. He described the Federal Highway in Anambra as prone to accident because of how bad they have turned.
‘‘The roads as we have them today in Anambra State are far from safe, but I think the state government is carrying out some palliative measures to ensure that people coming in and passing the state do not only have a safe trip but a smooth drive,” he said. mekusxxx: Oyo NDLEA confiscates N8.4m Indian hemp 11 December, 2009 01:37:00 DELE OGUNYEMI, Ibadan Font size: Oyo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confiscated a bungalow designated Indian hemp warehouse at Adewolu Village in Egbeda Local Government of the state from where 5.520 tonnes of cannabis neatly packaged in 421 bags have been recovered.
The State Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Suleiman Jadi, who showed the seized indian hemp to journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday said, however, that the suspects were at large while efforts were on to track them down. He gave the current street value of the seized Indian hemp at N8.4million, according to him, a bag now sells at about N20,000. By the rainy season, the cannabis will go for as much as N150,000 per bag, he stated.
Mr. Jadi told newsmen that officers and men of the Oyo NDLEA have been monitoring the Indian hemp warehouuse for more than three weeks until they stormed the place at about 3.00 a.m. on November 20, when the cannabis were eventually seized.
According to the NDLEA Commander, the owners of the Indian hemp warehouse, on noticing unusual movements of security operatives around the isolated building located inside the bush in Adewolu Village, took to their heels and had never returned since.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA officials have sealed the warehouse while all the cannabis stored inside had been removed to the agency’s state headquarters in the metropolis.
Two traffickers, Abraham Akinyemi (34) and Azeez Jelili (27), currently in the NDLEA net, Mr. Jadi said, were nabbed with 15 bags of Indian hemp weighing 114 kilogrammes concealed in a red Golf car with Oyo State registration number AJ608YRE. They were arrested by vigilante group on the 21st of November, 2009 at Olomi area of Ibadan on their way to Mokola and were instantly handed over to the Nigeria Police who later transferred them to the NDLEA. Jadi spoke on the achievements of the Oyo Command of the NDLEA since January this year to date, saying that a total of 176 suspects were arrested for drug related offences while a total seizure of 5.815 tons of cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) and 600 grammes of heroin were effected. Also within the same period, the Command destroyed four Indian hemp farms measuring 3.3 hectares. Only two months ago, one of such farms measuring 1.2 hectares and located at Gambari Forest Reserve in Oluyole Local Government was destroyed
Jadi maintained that his officers and men were up to the task and that they would not rest on their oars until Oyo State is completely rid of illicit drugs |

http://odili.net/news/source/2009/nov/11/309.html Osuofia: Actors desert Enugu By Ogbonna Amadi, Benjamin Njoku, Lagos & Tony Edike O! Na IGBO REPORT AM Wednesday, November 11, 2009 ENUGU—POLICE commands in the South-Eastern states have been placed on red alert to fish out the kidnappers of Nollywood star actor and comedian, Nkem Owoh. He was abducted on the Enugu– Port Harcourt Expressway on Monday. The rise in kidnapping in the South-East has forced a majority of the actors who are based in Enugu to relocate to Lagos for safety. Owoh, who was residing in Enugu with his family, had relocated to Lagos some months ago. “How can we continue staying here, when today you hear that they abducted Pete Edochie and tomorrow you hear that it is Osuofia? Who knows who they will kidnap tomorrow? A top actor, who wanted his name veiled, said, adding that the abductors had contacted Owoh’s family, demanding N15m, which they insisted must be paid without delay. Although the whereabouts of the abducted movie star is unknown, a senior police officer attached to Zone 9 Police Headquarters in Umuahia, Abia State, told Vanguard on telephone yesterday that the authorities had asked all commands in the zone to rescue the actor without delay. He said the spate of kidnapping in the zone had become a major embarrassment to the police and as such would not continue to watch “these enemies” to terrorise innocent citizens for their selfish ends. Owoh, popularly called Osuofia, was reportedly abducted on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway on Monday while travelling to Port Harcourt, Rivers State. There were, however, conflicting reports yesterday regarding the exact spot where he was seized. While some said he was abducted between Aba and Port Harcourt, others said he was picked from his car at Lokpanta in Abia State. Enugu State Police Command ’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, when contacted yesterday said from reports Owoh was abducted at Lokpanta, which is under the Abia State Command . He did not give further details. Meanwhile, reports said the kidnappers are demanding N15 million for his release. While some newspapers reported yesterday that the kidnappers are demanding N45million, sources in the movie industry said the demand is N15m. It was also gathered that Owoh’ kidnap has created fears among local movie actors who now see themselves as potential targets of kidnappers. Two months ago, another popular actor, Pete Edochie, was abducted in Onitsha, Anambra State, but was released unconditionally after a day in captivity. |
