A woman, popularly called Iya Korede, has been reported dead while passing the night with her lover at E8/266 Olola compound, Oje, Ibadan, Oyo State.

PoliticsFear Grips Drug Dealers In Enugu by jona2(op): 12:17am On Feb 18, 2010
Fear grips drug dealers in Enugu
By Our ReporterPublished TodayNewsRating: Unrated
Drug dealers at Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, have expressed fear that the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control’s (NAFDAC’s) fake drug detecting machine may not accurately determine whether a drug is fake or not.

The machine, known as "true scan machine", is expected to arrive in Enugu from Lagos before the end of February.

One of the dealers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that since the machine was a new technology, it may not accurately determine the standard of drugs.

"This is a new technology. We hope that the so-called Nigerian factor will not provide negative results that can send many of our people out of business’’, he said.

"In as much as we want NAFDAC to wipe out fake and expired drugs from the market, we also want them to be professional in handling the machine. But we cannot say much until it arrives’’, the dealer said.

E-mail scams exploiting Haiti earthquake generosity

By Razia Iqbal
BBC News

Criminal gangs stole this image from genuine charity SOS Children
Criminal gangs have been cashing in on the Haiti earthquake by seeking funds for bogus charities via millions of spam e-mails, a BBC investigation has learned.

The Haiti earthquake led to millions of pounds being raised to help people with next to nothing who, literally overnight, found they had even less.

But alongside genuine appeals and donations, something more sinister started to emerge.

Within days, scam e-mails began appearing on the internet. Some had what looked like logos from genuine charities.

One said it was from the British Red Cross, but was traced to a computer in Nigeria; another used the Unicef logo, but was nothing to do with them.

Our investigation focused on two e-mails. One was from a charity called Help the World, which is not registered with the Charity Commission.

Razia Iqbal and the BBC team confront one of the fraudsters

There was a mobile number on the e-mail which we rang. A man responded and told us how the funds they were raising were being used.

He told us: "We are repairing the centre of the disaster in Haiti. We focus on the schools in Haiti. We have to let the children have their future back, you know without education there's no future."

None of this was true. Scam e-mails tend to list only mobile numbers, which a bona fide charity would steer clear of.

We checked with the Charity Commission, who have no record of Help the World.

However, unusually for such e-mails, there was a London address which we checked out. It turned out to be a jazz and blues bar.

A second group we investigated called itself the M E Foundation and was also not registered with the Charity Commission.

In the e-mails, a Mr David Isco Iker was said to be running the charity. I asked him how they were getting their donations and what they were using the money for.

He said: "We get mostly phone donations,  mostly for food, medical supplies."

The BBC has passed this fake ID card to police after its investigation
This was all also untrue. Unsolicited, the M E Foundation sent us photographs of the Haiti projects they said they were involved with.

One showed rows of white tents with a logo on each one. We discovered the camp belonged to the well established Cambridge-based charity, SOS Children.

Chief executive of SOS Children, Andrew Cates, told us the picture was one of theirs, cut and pasted from their website, and not from Haiti, but from the Pakistani earthquake a few years ago.

He said: "The problem is it's not just about exploiting a donor or a charity, really they're exploiting the victims. Because they're taking money people want to give to the victims of these natural disasters and they're stealing it.

"So I don't feel that they're robbing me, I feel that they're taking from the mouths of children we're trying to help and that is something which is very difficult not to get angry about."

HOW TO AVOID SCAMS
Make sure emails are genuine. If you have any concerns about a request for donations that appears to come from a charity, contact the charity directly
Ask for a charity collector's identification and the charity's name and registration number
Check if a charity is on the public register of charities at www.charitycommission.gov.uk
If you think you have been targeted, report it to the police or contact the Charity Commission
If you want to donate to a particular charity online, visit the charity's website
Source: Charity Commission
Research from the Office of Fair Trading shows that last year, around two million people were conned out of cash via scam e-mails of various kinds.

But given the scale and nature of the Haiti tragedy, there is something quite different about this cyber crime.

Richard Hurley from Cifas, the UK's fraud prevention service, said: "They're very sophisticated and with that sophistication goes a large level of a very insidious nature which deliberately preys on your feelings for those innocent victims and your desire to help them.

"So it's making use of human suffering and the best in human nature at the same time simply for commercial profit."

The evidence against the M E Foundation was piling up. Their listed address in London turned out to be a newsagents which had been there for 20 years.

The newsagent said he was offended to learn that people were stealing money from others and using his address as a cover.

The other address listed for the M E Foundation was in Malaga, so we went there to try to talk to the people involved. We told our contact in Spain we would send our donation for the charity via courier.

The address given to us was in a run-down area of Malaga, and our courier waited for the contact. It all happened in a flash.

Our courier spoke to the man, in Spanish, very briefly. He clearly identified himself as the man I had spoken to.

However, as soon as the BBC team appeared with a camera and a microphone, he fled, shedding his coat, flip flops, and fake ID.

Enugu workers in free-for-all over money
National News Feb 16, 2010 By Tony Edike

ENUGU—IT was a show of shame in Enugu yesterday as officials of Enugu State Waste Management Authority, ESWAMA,  engaged themselves in a free-for-all fight over revenue collection at the New Market area of the coal city.

An eyewitness account said that fighting broke out when Head of Operations of ESWAMA, Mr Ebube Dike went to the mini-market along Enugu-Onitsha expressway to rescue his neighbour, who was allegedly being molestated by another revenue team from the authority.

Confrontation
On arrival at the scene, it was learnt, Dike allegedly confronted members of the revenue team led by one Chibuike Okwo, who were newly contracted to collect revenue for ESWAMA.

The Okwo group was impatient to ask for the identity of Dike before a fight broke out.

Okwo popularly called “Doctor,” according to the account, directed a bus driver to take Dike to their head office only to realize on arrival that the person manhandled was his boss.

The eyewitness said Dike regained strength when they got into the premises of the agency and quickly asked the securitymen to luck up the bigger gate .

The entire ESWAMA premises was thrown into confusion as the two groups dealt several blows on one another, while some staff watched helplessly.

Bread sellers protest
Meanwhile, the bread sellers numbering about 50, who were allegedly attacked by Okwo’s group protested extortion by ESWAMA, singing war songs along the New market road.

Secretary of the group, Ms Clara Chigbo said the Okwo-led group had confronted them over the payment for ESWAMA’S official waste baskets.

Chigbo said, “when Okwo’s group came demanding for payment of N1,700 for their official waste basket even without notice, I tendered receipts, trying to explain to them that we had paid N1,000 in December and agreed with the ESWAMA team that came, that we will pay the remaining when they

A valentine to forget
By Ben Ezeamalu

"We are not feeling happy because we are outside. We have been sleeping outside. There is no time for Valentine. We usually do our Valentine inside the house and now, there is no house. We can't touch our wives outside," said Kola Adebisi, who works with Imad Interstate, a transport line in Lagos.

His mood captured the prevailing atmosphere around the Saw Mill Market community, Oko Baba in Ebute Metta, Lagos, on February 14.

Fire razed hundreds of shanties within the area on the 6th of February, and rendered the occupants homeless. Though there was no loss of life, properties worth millions of naira were lost to the inferno.

While couples trooped out in their numbers decked in various combinations of red to mark the celebration, red was scarcely a colour of choice within the saw mill enclave.

Rather, some of the men were busy rebuilding their burnt homes; while the women gathered the children around them, and passively watched the men climb the roofs of the newly rebuilt shanties, hammer in hand.

"I'm still recovering from the shock. Normally on this day, my wife used to cook sumptuous meal for the family and we would dance after eating. We'd also invite friends and neighbours," said Biola Oleka, whose wife and two kids had already moved to Yaba to squat with his in-laws.

Tajudeen Aina and Alabi Kamoru were too engrossed in their ludo game to notice what was going on around them.

"Wetin be Valentine? I lost my machine circular to that fire. Do you know how much I bought it? There is nothing like Valentine here," said Mr. Aina, rubbing the ludo cup on his faded white shirt, apparently for luck, before throwing the dice across the cracked glass board.

But his partner, Mr. Kamoru, was not too keen on the game. Every now and then, he moved his head and tapped his knee to a sound of music coming from the distance.

He had a music studio within the saw mill where he sold compact discs, cassettes, and also provided Deejay services to the community and its environs.

"Today is Lovers Day and I'm supposed to be very busy. But see me here, playing ludo. All my equipment is lost to the fire," lamented Mr. Kamoru.

Hope on the way

After the Saturday inferno, promises of assistance flew in from every angle. Churches, civil society groups, and the state government visited the charred remains where the community used to be and pledged to help.

"Yesterday (Saturday), the Apostolic church came and distributed some clothes. Also, some people came and took our names," said Mr. Adebisi.

The residents admitted that the lack of power supply in the community played a huge role in exacerbating the inferno and so when the state governor visited, three days after the incident, it was top of their wish list.

"Fashola (the Lagos State governor) came here in person on Tuesday and we told him everything and he promised to help. The next day, a brand new transformer for the community landed," said Mr. Adebisi.

Mr. Fashola had asked the affected residents, on Tuesday, to register their names with the local government.

"The local government chairman has formed a committee comprising of the vice chairman, councillor of the ward, and community development chairmen in that community to meet the people, get their names, and submit to the state for necessary treatment," said Abimbola Kehinde, the special assistant to the Lagos Mainland local government chairman on revenue.

Mr. Kehinde promised that something would be done for the residents as soon as possible. The arrival of the new transformer symbolises hope, optimism, and a better life for these residents

Akwa Ibom women curse kidnappers, sponsors
National News Feb 14, 2010 In Akwa Ibom State, women, in their hundreds, all dressed in black, yesterday, rained curses on assassins, blackmailers and other violent criminals as well as their sponsors in the state; praying God to fortify the people and cleanse the land.

They prayed at a solemn assembly tagged: Akwa Ibom Mothers Pray, to mark the end of a three-day fasting and prayer declared by the state government in honour of some women killed by kidnappers two weeks ago, when they kidnapped General Edet Akpan, the former Director General of National Youth Service Corps.

The latest killing inside Qua Iboe Church, Iwok 1 in Nsit Atai Local Government Area brought to three women so far killed by kidnappers, including the 22-year daughter  of Mr Aniediabasi Udo, the chairman of Abak Local Government Area.

During the event rounding off the three-day fasting and prayer held at Ibom Hall grounds, Uyo, the mothers asked God to change the hearts of kidnapppers; keep their children from evil and judge the sponsors of the heinous crime. Ultimately, they wailed to God to complement the state government’s effort in providing lasting peace and security to the citizenry.

Addressing the people, a one-time Minister of Women Affairs, Obong Rita Akpan, who coordinated the programme, declared that the women were mourning the loss of their freedom and the fact that “Some of our children have gone astray”.

Governor Godswill Akpabio, who led other government dignitaries to grace the event,  said the prayer was necessary because without God, no human can truly provide a lasting security.

Politicshow Ohakim Brutalized Citizen Ikenna Samuelson Iwuoha by jona2(op): 3:00am On Feb 16, 2010
How Ohakim brutalized citizen Ikenna Samuelson Iwuoha

The despicable act of insult, abuse, let down and desecration of the office of the governor of Imo State by Chief Ikedi Godson Ohakim (The State governor) started on the 7 th of January 2010.

On this day, this writer (Ikenna Samuelson Iwuoha) had distributed a document in the internet and media houses through e-mails. I entitled the document “OPERATION RESCUE IMO FROM BONDAGE”. In that document I reeled out 100 (one hundred) reasons why Imo people should reject the Ohakim evilcractic, jezebelic and fraud-infested leadership.

On the 9 th of January 2010 this writer (Mr. Ikenna samuelson Iwuoha) wrote a letter to the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly. In that letter I urged the Speaker to set up a special probe panel that would invite me to come and prove my allegations of fraud and criminalities against chief Ikedi Ohakim. I also copied over 54,000 people through the internet.

Few days later I followed my desire to expose the criminal activities of Governor Ikedi Ohakim by posting an article in the internet, media organizations and to prominent Nigerians. I entitled that articles “STOP CHASING THE WIND: LET US FOLLOW PRECEDENCE”.

advertisement

On the 18 th of January 2010 I sent a reminder letter to the speaker of Imo State House of Assembly still urging him to set up a probe panel that would invite me to prove that Chief Ikedi ohakim is a monumental criminal. On the 19 th of January 2010 I posted another article in the internet entitled “WILL FRAUDSTERS AND MONEY LAUNDERERS CONTEST ELECTIONS IN IMO STATE? PART ONE”.

On that same 19 th of January 2010 by 3:34pm, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State (Mr. Aloysius Okorie) called my telephone number requesting that I should come and see him for “brief” discussion. So I agreed with the Police Commissioner that I would come and see him on Friday 22 nd of January 2010 by 9:00am. The following day being 20 th of January 2010 by 5:30pm I personally called the police boss to reconfirm my appointment with him on Friday 22 nd January 2010. I was therefore dumbfounded and flabbergasted the following morning Thursday, 21 st January 2010 by 6:31am when I heard a knock at my personal apartment (Plot 98 Ikenegbu Layout Extension Owerri). When I drew my curtain, behold I saw five heavily armed men. The men told me that the Police boss asked them to bring me along with them. I quickly objected telling them that my appointment with the Police Commissioner was on Friday 22 nd of January 2010. The armed men pulled their guns at me telling me to open my iron protector. I told them off by saying “Taaa”. I picked my phone and called the Police Commissioner by 6:34am. I asked Police Commissioner Aloysius Okorie when my appointment with him was to the hearing of those heavily armed men. The Police Commissioner said “tomorrow Friday by 9:00am”. He went further to add “I thought we had agreed on Friday 22nd January 2010”. Why this sudden call. I now told CP Aloysius Okorie that before me were five heavily armed men saying that he asked them to bring me to his office. The police Commissioner responded by saying “Em, Em, Em, Ok, Ok follow them”. I then told the police Commissioner that I would follow them but should anything happen to me that I would hold him responsible. I also told him that those armed men would remain outside while I dressed up. I also told the police boss that I would inform my people all over Nigeria of the development. The Police Commissioner then pleaded with me to hand over my phone to those men so that he would talk to them. I responded by telling him that I was not a “mugu”.

So I made calls to my people nationwide informing them of the development. After that, I instructed my wife (Chioma) to get me water for bathing which she did. I took my bath and dressed up. Of course I left my phone in my house. I knew that Ikedi Ohakim was the person looking for me based on Police Commissioner’s “Em, Em, Em, Ok, Ok, follow them”. My 5 1/2yrs (Five and half) old son Nwachinemerem was in the palour, so I told him, “Ogbuefi let me go and see that foolish man”. The little boy nodded his head. I then asked him “who is that foolish man?” my son responded “Dr Ikedi Ohakim”. The armed men were shocked. So I opened my iron protector and followed them. When we came outside my compound I saw a PRADO JEEP with registration number Imo 849 NKR, I told those men that I know the jeep to be among the Governors convoy. So I entered the car and we drove off. When we got to government house owerri by 7:04am, the driver of the jeep diverted to the multi-purpose hall where he packed. So the leader of the team that picked me up made a call to “somebody” informing him that I was with them at the multi-purpose hall premises. On three different occasions those armed men asked me about my phone of which I responded that I was with it.

By 9:00am, a call came to those armed men that Chief Ikedi Ohakim was in his Office. By 9:03am the Chief security Officer to the Governor walked to where we were packed. The driver of the jeep came down while Chief security officer entered the jeep. He turned back and asked “ My friend, who are you?” I responded “I am Ikenna Samuelson Iwuoha”. The CSO nodded his head and drove off and entered the Governor’s lodge and packed. I came down and I was marched straight to Ohakim’s Office. When I entered the governor’s Office, I saw Ikedi Ohakim. He quickly shouted “lock the door, lock the door”. The door was locked leaving me only with Ohakim and his CSO in the office. The CSO pulled his gun at me. Ikedi Ohakim on his own shouted at me to pull off my clothes completely. At that point I knew that I was in danger, so I played along. As I was removing my clothes, Ohakim stood up from the Office chair and came to me and forcefully removed my clothes. Another young man of about 33yrs wearing an ash coloured suit came into the governor’s office to assist Ikedi Ohakim to completely remove my clothes. I became completely naked before Ikedi Ohakim in the office of the Governor. The young man then left the Governor Office. The CSO was still pointing a gun at me. Then Ikedi Ohakim gave me a blow on my mouth, he gave me a head butt. He hit me with his hands and legs severally. Then Ohakim went to his office table and brought a “koboko” (horse whip). He started to flog me all over my body. After he ordered me to lie down on the rug in the office and I obeyed. Ikedi Ohakim flogged, flogged and flogged me ruthlessly, heartlessly and without mercy. He kicked me severally without mercy. He kicked me severally with his shoes. He also marched me with his shoes. The pains was much. I cried, cried and called on Almighty God to come to my rescue. Ikedi Ohakim personally brutalized me right inside his office. I must have received well over 120 strokes of koboko. My blood completely stained the rug in the governor’s office. I was in pains. I saw hell with my two eyes, Almighty God did not allow me to die. Ikedi Ohakim continued to flog me. His brother Emma Ohakim walked in and said “Chinekee, His Excellency, His Excellency”. Ikedi Ohakim said to his brother “Emma, this is Ikenna Samuelson I will kill him today”. Emma simply left the Office. The CSO also continued to point his gun at me. When the pains became unbearable, I decided to take a risk. I boldly grabbed Ikedi ohakim legs. I shouted at him as follows, “What you are doing to me in this office is wrong”. “You are abusing the office of the Governor” “you are desecrating the office of the Governor of Imo State”. “Moreover my wife is from your place Mbano, conversely you are my children’s Nnaochie”. This was the miracle that saved me from Ikedi Ohakim’s brutality. He stopped beating and flogging me. He then shifted a chair and sat down with the koboko still in his hands. I was seriously in pains. Then Ikedi Ohakim started to shout “Samuelson you have disgraced me in this country. You have finished me. I will kill you and nothing would happen. I will prove to you that I am not an ordinary Governor. I know those sponsoring you. But you must mention their names to me with your mouth”. Then flogging started again. Ohakim flogged and flogged me that I became helpless. So I begged him to leave me alone. But Ohakim said he would leave me alone on his conditions. He brought out a copy of NATIONAL DAILY Newspaper of 1 – 7 December 2009 edition with the caption “HOW OHAKIM LOOTS IMO STATE. Then Ikedi Ohakim said to me “Samuelson, look at how you disgraced the Governor of Imo State”. “Your own Governor”. “You have finished me in this country”. “I no longer have respect in this State.” “What have I done to you?” “They sent you to come and monitor all my activities”. “Why must you team up with my enemies against me”.

Then Ohakim brought out another document entitled “HOW OHAKIM LOOTS IMO STATE PART TWO”. HE SHOWED IT TO ME AND SAID, “SAMUELSON, WHO WROTE THIS PETITION AGAINST ME TO THE Office of the Inspector General of Police”? He then ordered me to read the contents of that petition to the Office of Inspector general of Police. I refused so he started to flog me again. I pleaded with him to leave me alone. Then Ohakim said “Samuelson you must cooperate with me”. “I want to call a press conference where you will come and denounce those allegations against me. Once you do that, I will give you anything you want. Ohakim continued “last Christmas I gave scholarship to 60 people in my home town OKOHIA, so I can give you anything. “Just do me a favour”. Then the CSO still pointing a gun at me said “just cooperate with his Excellency”. Ikedi Ohakim continued his sermon by saying “Samuelson, where is your laptop, your numerous e-mail addresses, their passwords, flash drive and documents. I did not respond but continued to look at the man who says he is the Governor of Imo State. We stared at each other for about 15 seconds. Then the next thing I saw was tears flowing from Ikedi Ohakim’s eyes. At this point I was moved but I stood my ground because I know Ohakim and his antics too well.

The CSO then told the Governor that Commissioner of Police and another person was coming. Ikedi Ohakim then told me to put on my boxers only. I was in pains but I managed to put on my boxers and sat on the rug. The Commissioner of Police Aloysius okorie walked into the Governors Office with a woman I later discovered to be the State Director of SSS.

advertisement

Immediately they walked in, Ohakim stood up and said “CP Aloysius Okorie, Samuelson has confessed”. I was shocked at Ohakim’s statement to Commissioner of Police. Ikedi Ohakim then started shouting and saying all sorts of things. At a point Ohakim said “it is Willie Amadi that caused their problem for me, Owu kwa willie Amadi ooo”. “He destroyed your kerosene business at Douglas road and you now turned around to focus on me.” I smiled in my mind because I never had my kerosene business at Douglas road. I had my kerosene businesses at Prefab, Aladinma, Ikenegbu Layout and inside the market. Thereafter, Ohakim said before the Commissioner of Police and the State Director of SSS “Samuelson just cooperate with me and I will restore your business. I can do anything for you”. The Commissioner of Police Aloysius Okorie then told me “Ikenna look at your Governor and cooperate with him”. The state director of SSS said to me “My son why don’t you cooperate with his Excellency”. I did not say anything. At a point I turned to the Commissioner of Police and said “Nna-anyi Ukwu Aloysius Okorie, you have put yourself into trouble. I followed those armed men because you asked me to follow them. My people will, hold you responsible if anything happens to me. Just look at my body”. Then the Police boss told Ohakim that I called him when those men came to pick me and that I made calls to people. At that point Ohakim ordered me to wear my clothes which I did painfully. The CSO led me out of the Governor Office. At the corridor I saw the chief press secretary to the Governor Mr Henry Ekpe. I also saw Mr. Chikwem Onuoha, the boy that does money laundering for Ohakim. I also saw four other people whose names I cannot readily re-collect. At this point let me say that Mr. Henry Ekpe pitied me. He saw my condition. When I was to enter the PRADO jeep (Imo 849 NKR), I staggered, Mr. Henry Ekpe said “jide nu ya aka ka ohara ida” meaning hold him properly so he does not fall. The CSO drove off to another section of Government House. At that section I sat on the veranda while the CSO pulled his gun at me and demanded for my laptop, my email addresses, passwords etc. I did not respond but just stared at him. He continued to demand for those things. Then I said to him “please leave me alone I am tired. “Tell your Governor that I would like to see him one on one”. The CSO left and drove off. The security men there came to me and said “Ndo nnu” meaning “sorry you hear”. They now brought water and poured on my head. They also used water top soothe my back. Honestly I was in severe pains. The CSO drove in and saw what they were to me and shouted “what are you people doing”. He ordered them to put me in the car. The CSO and three other people in the car drove me straight to the Commissioner of Police Office. The CSO then handed me over to the Police boss and left. The Commissioner of Police and the State Director of SSS were in the Office when CSO handed me over to the Commissioner of Police.

The Commissioner of Police asked me to sit down which I did. I said to the police boss “you have put yourself into trouble. I followed those men because you asked me to follow them. Look at my body” The Commissioner of Police with his own mouth and in the presence of the woman who is the State Director of SSS said “Ikenna when you were led out of the Governor’s Office I told His Excellency that he did wrong by personally beating you up”. I then told the police boss to be ready to repeat what he just said when the time comes, because I would fight to the end. I added “As for that foolish Ikedi Ohakim I will deal with him”. The police boss said to me “Ikenna, look at what you are saying in my Office”. “Just cooperate with His Excellency and everything will be ok. The woman who is the State Director of SSS then showed me that petition I wrote to the Inspector general of Police and said “Did you actually write this petition?. I looked at her and said “I signed it with my name, my address is there, my phone number is there, I attached my passport. Therefore I take full responsibility of that petition. Ikedi Ohakim is a criminal”. Both the Commissioner of Police and the woman just looked at me and said simultaneously Na – Wao.

Then the woman said to me “My son you are very intelligent. I want to investigate the governor myself. So hand over the documents to me so that I can do proper investigation”. I just looked at her and did not say anything. After a while the police Commissioner then sent for a senior Police officer who now took me to his office. When I told the man how Ohakim beat me up in his office. The man was shocked. He left me in his office with another police officer looking after me. He later came back and handed me over to another officer who wanted to interrogate me but I told him that I can only respond if my lawyers were around.

I was thereafter locked up at the CIB police cell containing 48 people.

The next day I was brought out to get ready for court. I wrote my statement narrating what happened from my house to the time the Governor personally beat me up. In that statement I owned up to be the writer of that petition against the Governor to the Inspector general of Police. And my readiness to prove all my allegation against the Governor. Suddenly the police said that they won’t take me to court again. That it will be Monday 25 th of January 2010. I was then locked up again. On Monday 25/1/2010 I was taken to court where a three court charge was read against me. Of course I pleaded not guilty. I was refused bail and was therefore reminded in prison custody till 2/2/2010.

When I appeared in court on 2/2/2010 six new court charges were added to the earlier three. So hey have a nine court charges against me. I was later granted bail to the sum of N500,000. The next hearing is on the 19 th of February 2010. I am 100% sure that the koboko which Ikedi used to flog me was poisoned. I say this because I am seriously in pains and receiving treatment in a private hospital. Nonetheless I make bold to say that the lion is back.

At this point and juncture let me state it very clearly that this debilitating monster called Ikedi Ohakim has done his worst. I will go to any length to take my own pound of flesh raised to the power 1000. I must prove my allegations against him. I will unearth everything about Ikedi Ohakim and his fraud infested leadership. In short I will jail him. At least he knows that I have the ability.

The battle is now full blown. Ikedi Ohakim has given me the bullet to shoot him. Ikedi Ohakim is now in my firing range

Yobe Govt arrests D/Herald Publisher

For the umpteenth time within barely a couple of months, security agents have stormed the head office of DESERT HERALD newspaper again, arresting the Publisher/Editor – In – Chief of the weekly tabloid, Mallam Tukur Mamu.

Mallam Mamu, who was arrested and detained in Abuja only recently by officials of State Security (SSS), was picked up by the police from his Kaduna office at about 5.30pm on Monday February 8, 2009 and taken to the Kawo Police Station. He was subsequently taken to the police Zonal command in Bauchi, Bauchi State in a Hilux van with registration number (Kano) AA 321 DKD.

The DESERT HERALD’S current travail was said to have been orchestrated by the government of Yobe State which had obtained a court warrant over the celebrated poison scare involving that state’s governor, Ibrahim Geidam. Ironically, the story, which was published by DESERT HERALD last year, was later indirectly corroborated by none other than the Yobe governor himself, who cited a “military intelligence” report to buttress the government’s assertion that he was being targeted by assassins.

Commenting on the unexpected development, the weekly newspaper’s editor, Mr. Sode Abbah, who met Mallam Tukur at the Kawo police station shortly before he was moved to Bauchi around 6pm, said the whole thing came as a surprise to the management and staff of the five-year-old media organization.

According to him, “though we understand that the Yobe State government was not comfortable with the said report, it is pertinent to note that subsequent developments, including that widely reported statement made by the governor himself, vindicated our report. Therefore it is surprising that the issues has been resurrected after such a long time and is being used to deal with our publisher and company like this”.

He added “We wish to call on well meaning Nigerians to prevail on those concerned to ensure the speedy release of our publisher more so as he has not committed any crime. Those in position of power should not use their privileged position to harass and intimidate innocent citizens in such a brazen manner.

Goodluck faces first security challenge in Ebonyi

Martins Elechi

Barely 24 hours after taking over as acting President, Ebonyi State may prove to be the first security challenge starring Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in the face, as the State government today alerted of a heavy build up of arms by some politicians set to unleash mayhem in the state.

The government said the politicians planned to use the troubled Ezillo community to spark off a crisis that would see to the destruction of several developmental projects, including the multi-billion naira water scheme in Ezillo.

In a press conference today in Abakaliki, the state capital, Commissioner for Information and state orientation, Egwu Chima, said the government had been reliably informed on the activities of some politicians building up arms and ammunitions to unleash violence.

Even though he failed to give names, the commissioner, who was flanked by Fred Udeogu and Chief Celestine Nwali, commissioners for grants and donor agencies, and Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs respectively, upbraided the masterminds of the proposed violence for being unhappy with the development which the people of Ebonyi were enjoying under Governor Martin Elechi.

Said the commissioner: “These hirelings are already on the prowl, ready to unleash mayhem in Ezillo any moment from now…they even intend to embarrass the soldiers who have maintained an unusual peaceful posture in the area all these troubled times, and it is probably imperative and worthy of emphasis, to state that the soldiers who have for long been stationed to keep peace had in spite of provocations refused to react negatively”.

Describing the politicians as ““urban guerillas,” the government spokesman however expressed confidence in the ability of the soldiers to defend themselves and the people of the state, in the event of provocation.

He revealed that the Ebonyi state government had earlier scuttled an attempt to detonate the Ezillo Water scheme, and warned that the state government would not fold its arms whilst a few elements took the law into its hands.

As the remains of Otunba Dipo Dina are buried tomorrow in Ijebu-Ode, the Action Congress (AC) in Ogun State has pledged a reward N2.5 million for anyone or group who could give useful information on his killers.

Former Ogun State governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, announced the party’s position yesterday during an interdenominational farewell service held at the state headquarters of the party on Abiola Way, Abeokuta, the state capital.

Osoba’s position came just as the Chairman of the AC in the state, Alhaji Tajudeen Olaotan Bello, insisted that Dina’s killing was not armed robbery but assassination. According to Osoba, the pledged reward would also assist the police in their investigations.

Bello said the AC was pained that Ogun State Police Command hastily concluded that the assassination of Dina was an armed robbery even before investigations commenced. ‘’This is pre-emptive to say the least. It, therefore, appears no one is safe in Ogun State again,’’ he said.

Osoba, who looked mournful in an all-black attire, lamented Dina’s death.
His words: “He never discriminated on the basis of religion. He built churches in his home town. “He was planning to build a mosque before he was killed. I want to assure that the AC members, from the national to the wards, are determined to see the end of this assassination. We are determined to see to the end of this killing, that’s why the AC is pledging the sum of N2.5 million to anyone who can give useful information on the killing of Dina. We must immortalize him with our votes

“Those who killed or masterminded his (Dina) killings will never know peace. They will never know laughter in their lives. Those who want to make AC laughing stock will not know laughter. They will not experience peace in their families and in their generations. God will give them what will be mightier than their power,’’ he cursed.

Calling on the ancestral fathers of Nigeria and Ogun State, Osoba stated further: ‘’They will never know peace in their lives. With Dina’s death, let’s prepare for war with our votes. Let us tell them since the creation of Ogun State, we have never witnessed this type of things that are happening. You must be prepared to chase them out with your brooms. They have introduced dangerous and violent things in our polity.

“You must use your votes to chase out killers. If you don’t want Dina’s death and struggle to end in vain, we must prepare for war. We must prepare to fight with our votes. Dina was a courageous man. We must immortalize him by ensuring that we chase out these set of killers.”

Ayinla Kareem, Chief Missioner, Dawat Sallam Society of Nigeria, who spoke during the service, said death was inevitable debt that every mortal would pay. Rev. Joseph Osifuwa, from the Freeman Methodst Cathedral, Ogbe, Abeokuta presided over the Christian prayer and charged people to always expect death.

On his own, Bello said the circumstances of the killing bore all the ingredients of premeditated and organized murder. “Law enforcement agencies should do their duty of smoking out Dina’s assailants,” he noted. failure which there are lots of basis for members of the opposition to fear in Ogun State, he warned.

Fakery: Onitsha drug dealers want NAFDAC to procure more TSM
From NWABUEZE OKONKWO, Onitsha

Members of the Onitsha Patent and Proprietory Medicine Dealers Union (OPPMDU), Onitsha drugs market have called on the National Agency for Foods and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to expedite action in procuring more of the True Scan Machines (TSM)(fake drug detecting machine), for distribution to all the drug markets in the country.

They said the machine, if distributed to all the drug markets, would be of immense benefit to the market because of the size of the market and the numerical strength of the traders and customers who patronize the market daily.

In a press statement issued yesterday in Onitsha and jointly signed by the Chairman and Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the market, Emeka Ezeanyika and Chidi Mbah respectively, the traders observed that the machine ,which was recently introduced by NAFDAC and which its test is ongoing in major drug markets in the country, would contribute immensely towards winning the fight against fake drugs in the country.

Ezeanyika and Mbah noted that the success of the machine cannot be quantified because of its accuracy, speed, time and efficiency in detecting fake and original drugs, adding that the machine gives an instant result within three minutes.

They contended that the first test of the machine in the Onitsha drug market, which was successful, had gone a long way to prove the commitment of the present executive of the market union and the traders themselves to shun fake drugs in whatever form.

They, therefore, expressed their unalloyed support to the NAFDAC Director-General, Dr. Paul Orhii, over his success and achievement within the short period he stayed in office and called on other well meaning Nigerians and stakeholders to rally round him in the fight against fakery in the country.

They also called on relevant agencies to live up to expectation in the discharge of their duties since, according to them, Onitsha is a hinter land without any international airport or seaport and is not within the border post as to be involved in fakery as being perceived in some quarters, adding that 95 per cent of drugs sold in the market come from other states of the federation.

They stated categorically that the market was free from fake drugs, hence they called for thorough investigation from relevant agencies whenever fake drugs dealers are arrested, stressing that most often, fingers are pointed towards the market when fake products are intercepted, even without investigation, thereby casting aspersion on the market.

Fulani kills kinsman over woman
Arewa Report

Residents of a remote Fulani settlement around NNPC/KRPC, near Maraban Rido in Kaduna, Kaduna State, woke up on a Tuesday, February 2, 2010 morning, only to come face-to-face with the corpse of one of their own, Saidu Tukur.

Tukur, Daily Sun learnt was alleged to have been murdered by another fellow Fulani Jumoi not real name, who is now at large, over woman. According to close family sources, the two Fulani friend were said to be having grudges with each other, since 2009, over a woman. When they could not resolve their differences, some Fulani elders in the area were said to have intervened, but to no avail.

“Jumoi had earlier accused Tukur of going after his wife because of a photograph the deceased took with the woman late last year. “The alleged murderer accidentally stumbled on the photograph when he was flipping through a bunch of pictures from their photographer’s shop in Maraban Rido.
“When he saw the photograph, he pretended to have been sent by the deceased to pay for the balance, which he did and collected the picture.

“When the elders summoned a meeting to resolve the issue, Tukur too accused Jumoi of being the first to have ‘chased’ his wife whom he has divorced a long time ago with his three-year-old son because of the initial allegation. Insisting that, that was why he too ‘chased’ Jumoi’s wife by convincing her too to take a photograph with him out of frustration and revenge. But the late Tukur failed to provide proof, like Jumoi had done to the elders with the photograph.

“Jumoi pretended to have accepted the settlement of N100,000 and continued to play along with Tukur as they continued relating as normal friends,” one of the sources said.
Both men were said to have been seen together on the day Tukur was murdered in Maraban Rido market and that they were on their way home together, before the dastardly act was allegedly committed.

An eye witness told Daily Sun that he saw the two of them quarrelling when suddenly Jumoi used a matchet  to inflict deep wound on Tukur’s neck. Jumoi’s uncle, (name witheld) was said to have been immediately alerted and he instantly mobilized other residents to the scene and reported the incident to the police.

But before the police could reach for him, the alleged murderer, Jumoi was said to have immediately absconded with his wife and two children, leaving behind his cows. But the mother of the deceased Mallama Halima Tukur had a slightly contrary view of what led to the son’s murder. She disclosed that those who murdered her son were three in number, from the same family.

According to her, “two of them have been making advances to Rabi, late Tukur’s wife since 2009.
“Rabi reported them to her late husband on several occasions, but failed to plan to track them down with a view to having proof of her allegations. “Late Tukur at a point became doubtful of his wife’s allegations since she was reluctant to give details of the advances. Hence, he was afraid that such allegations can dent the good family relationship they have been enjoying with Jumoi.

“Rabi was then confined to her house in order to avoid any further interaction with Jumoi or any other person, only for Tukur to sight his wife with Jumoi down the stream one day from where they (Rabi and Jumoi) went to take the controversial photograph at a studio in Maraban Rido. “Tukur later stumbled on the photograph when he went to search for a photo he snapped. This made him furious and worried.

“Incidentally, Jumoi’s wife came into the studio and so he too convinced her to take a photo with him so that he too can get at Jumoi. “So that was the picture that cost late Tukur two cows when he was fined. The fine followed reports by Jumoi’s relative when the elders called for intervention in 2009.
“I saw Jumoi’s wife hurriedly boarding a motorcycle with her two children and her sister to an unknown destination. That time I did not know what has happened to my late son.

“My son has been murdered in cold blood due to no fault of his and leaving behind a three-year-old son called Sani Abacha. “We have been leaving in this settlement for over 30 years. In fact, one of the alleged killers of my son stayed in our compound for over one year,” Tukur’s mother said.

To this end, she said she would not take anything short of justice in a competent court of law to avenge the “unholy murder” of her innocent son who has left behind a three-year-old son to carter for
When Daily Sun visited the family house of the alleged murderer, Jumoi who is at large, there was no visible sign that anyone was still around the vicinity, a situation that made it impossible for Daily Sun hear from any of the family members.

But the State Chairman of the Fulani community in Kaduna popularly known as ‘Ardon Ardodi’,Alhaji Amadu Sulaiman said: “what happened was that the deceased (Tukur) was seated in the bush close to their house when two men, pounced on him, beat him to a state of unconsciousness with a Fulani stick.
“I cannot give the exact names of the two suspects until the police have concluded their investigations.
“He was then stabbed with a sharp object suspected to be a matchet leaving the head hanging on the neck from small portion of his flesh.

“His back was swollen from injuries he must have sustained from the herdsman’s stick.
“All I know is that something happened two to three months ago which led to the intervention of Jumoi’s relations at Maraban Jos. “The issue of Tukur going after jumoi’s wife and vis-vasa was resolved amicably where Tukur was asked to pay some amount of money as fine by Jumoi’s relatives.

“We have been receiving a lot co-operation in our capacity as the leaders of the Fulani community from the Sabon Tasha Divisional Police Station; anytime we have any dispute among our people.
“The police always work together with our vigilante group to carry out successful arrest of culprits.
“The police have since intensified their search to arrest those alleged to have masterminded the dastardly act which led to the death of Tukur; and we are hopeful that the culprits will be caught by security agents.

“I am calling on my fellow Fulani in Nigeria and indeed in Africa to condemn this unfortunate, unfaithful and inhuman act capable causing distrust, disunity and lack of peaceful co-existence among the Fulani.
“The Ardos have emphasized in our meeting with all stakeholders in Miyyetti Allah the need to sensitize the Fulanis on the need to take education their children seriously.

“Because we the Fulani are law-abiding but are really backward in modern education which seems to be the reason why such incidents are occurring,” he added, even as he appealed to the family of victim not to take laws into their hands but continue to leave in peace and allow the law to takes its course.
When the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Aminu Lawal was contacted, vide a phone call, he confirmed the incident, and said the police have already intensified efforts to track down and apprehend the alleged killers.

He said “the police have already commenced investigation and the Ardos (Fulani leaders) have been co-operating with the police to give any vital information that could lead to the arrest.
“Police have also deployed some men to beef up security to forestall any reprisal attempt in that area.
“The uncle of the alleged murderer has voluntarily given himself to the police for protective custody,” the Police spokesperson said.as that the deceased (Tukur) was seated in the bush close to their house when two men, pounced on him, beat him to a state of unconsciousness with a Fulani stick.

By Our Reporter Published Today News Rating: Unrated
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday filed an amended 28-count charge against former Adamawa State Governor Boni Haruna and two others.

The suspects, who were arraigned before Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja, alongside Haruna are Mohammed Inuwa Bassi and John Babani Elias.

Elias is to be remanded in the EFCC custody till February 12.

But Haruna and Bassi will enjoy the initial bail granted them by the court.

The commission filed the amended charges against them for corruptly enriching themselves while Haruna was governor between 1999 and 2007. An initial eight-count charge had been filed against Haruna and others when they were first arraigned in 2008.

At the resumed hearing yesterday, counsel to the accused persons, Regina Okotiebo urged the court to grant bail to Elias who was arraigned for the first time.

She said motion for Elias’ bail, dated January 19 and filed January 25, had been served on the prosecution.

But the prosecution counsel, Chile Okoroma, objected to the motion.

He said he had just taken over the case and not aware of any counter affidavit that was expected to be filed.

Okoroma added that he was not aware of the application for bail for the third accused person.

Justice Bello ordered that Elias, who had evaded arrest since 2008, be remanded in EFCC custody.

The 28-count charge that Haruna and co are being prosecuted for include: "That you Boni Haruna on or about December 2, 2002 at Yola within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court did make a forged Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, cheque no.0348507 dated 2/12/2002 in the sum of N18,050,000.00 drawn on account number no. 3406139110, to Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, operated by you, Boni Haruna, in the name of Mohammed Inuwa Bassi, knowing it to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 3 (2) (c) of the miscellaneous offences Act, Cap 410 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990 as amended by the Tribunals (certain consequential Amendments, etc), Decree no 62 of 1999 and punishable under Section 3 ( 2 ) of the same Act.

Ekiti kidnap suspect gives police clue to crimes
By Odunayo Ogunmola Published Today News Rating: Unrated
•Group cautions on kidnappings
The Police are said to be making progress in investigating the kidnap and death of the Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adeleye Orisagbemi and the acting Provost of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Dr Gabriel Olusegun Olowoyo.

The monarch, college chief and their aides, who were abducted at various locations in the state on January 29, were killed in a road crash between Kabba and Lokoja in Kogi State as their captors were taking them.

A source at the State Police Command in Ado-Ekiti, told The Nation yesterday that the prime suspect in the kidnap, Charles Ojo Ovie, has reportedly confessed to the Police in Abuja.

The source said Charles admitted his involvement in several high-profile crimes in the state, including assassination, armed robbery, car theft, arson, among others.

The police have said the investigation is being extended to neighbouring states where the suspect used to operate.

A team of detectives, led by an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), is said to be interrogating the suspect and the team is reportedly taking its time to get more information from the suspect.

The source also said no fewer than 15 mobile policemen (MOPOL) are said to be on guard at the hospital where the suspect is being treated for the wounds he sustained in the crash.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has condemned the rising crime wave in the state, expressing dismay with the abduction and eventual killing of the traditional ruler and the college provost with those in their entourage.

The Ekiti chapter of the CNPP, in a statement signed by its Director of Publicity, Mr Ilesanmi Omolayo, urged security agents to work hard and rid the state of crime.

It lamented a situation where a hitherto peaceful state is gradually descending into the abyss of criminal activities and insecurity.

Describing the kidnap and death of the law-abiding citizens of the state as "disturbing and least expected", the CNPP, however, commended the Police for the arrest of Charles and called for a thorough investigation.

It urged the Police to use any information gathered from the suspected gang leader to purge the state of crime.

But CNPP expressed the fears that members of the gang could still be prowling within the state.
