Nigeria move to 15th Posted: 2010-02-03 18:03 A bronze medal finish at the African Cup of Nations has seen Nigeria jump seven places to 15th in the world and second in Africa, behind Egypt, who climb to their highest ever ranking of 10th in the world. The ranking is Nigeria's second highest, since being placed 5th in April 1994, the highest ever by any African country. It also marks a major improvement in Nigeria's position from when current coach Shuaibu Amodu took over. After the African Nations Cup in 2008, Berti Vogts left Nigeria ranked 46th in the world and 7th in Africa. Two years later, Amodu's team have slashed 31 places off the world ranking. Nations Cup finalists Ghana also moved up 7 places to 27th in the world and 5th in Africa. Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire paid for their failure to reach the semifinals, dropping to fourth and fifth in Africa, respectively. Cameroon dropped 9 places to 20th, while Cote d'Ivoire slipped six places to 22nd. Zambia, who lost on penalties to Nigeria, moved 11 places to 73rd, and Malawi also made significant progress, moving 17 places to 82nd. A total of 82 international “A” matches were taken into account for this edition of the ranking, 15 of which were played in 2009 (total of 849 “A” matches played in 2009). In addition to the 29 matches played in the Africa Cup of Nations, 11 continental qualifying matches and 42 friendlies were played. Ghana seeks to diversify Nigerian foreign investments Thursday 21 January 2010 / by Konye Obaji Ori Nigeria has recently emerged as Ghana’s biggest economic partner, contributing to over 60 per cent of Ghana’s foreign investment. But the Ghanaian government has sought to attract other foreign investments into the country, both to diversify investments and bolster economic growth. According to reports, the height of Nigerian investment in Ghana rose with the entrance of communications giant, Globacom, along with some other companies, into the Ghanaian market. The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has called on Nigerians to take advantage of available investment opportunities in several sectors, i.e., agriculture and agro-processing; fish processing; sports, Leisure and Infrastructure; transport; infrastructure, power and tele-communications, among others. The 2010 International Business Events Management (IBEM) conference, an international business event themed; "Investing and Growing Your Business in Ghana - Challenges and Opportunities", is expected to converge potential investors in the west African country in March. A natural Ghana-Nigeria collaboration Mr. Edward Ashong-Lartey also assured a group of Nigerians in Lagos last week that Ghana would discuss possible areas of further collaboration with Nigerian investors and the kind of incentives that will promote investment and business relations between both countries. For him, Nigeria’s technical capacity and experience in manpower are relevant to the development of Ghana’s nascent sectors, especially oil and gas.
