By Yemi Akintomide , Correspondent, Akure

A four-man gang of stormed Akure, Ondo State capital, on Sunday evening and kidnapped the daughter of the State Commissioner for Works, Miss Yemi Omogunwa.

Omogunwa’s daughter was kidnapped along James Adegoke Street, off Oke Ijebu, a stone throw from her residence.

Eye witness account said that the 27-year-old girl and student of University of Cairo, was walking along James Adegoke street when the kidnappers accosted her led her to their waiting car which zoomed off to an unknown destination.

According to the witness account, “when I saw her discussing with a man I greeted her, but she did not respond as the boy was leading her to a car where three men were already seated and the car moved away. It pained me that she did not respond to my greetings but I didn’t know they were kidnappers.”

The source informed that when it was late in the night and she did not return, her parents called her GSM line, which had been switched off.

It was gathered that a search party was organised while the commissioner went to the police station to report the incident.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that the kidnappers called the commissioner immediately he left the police station and informed him that his daughter has been kidnapped.

They were said to have demanded for a ransom of N30 million from the commissioner before his daughter could be released.

Police arrest suspected ‘chain rapist’
By Our Reporter Published Today News Rating: Unrated
A man, described by the police as a ‘rape specialist’, has been arrested in Ibadan for allegedly raping more than 15 girls on two different occasions.

Ms Olabisi Okuwobi, spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, said yesterday that the suspect on January 19 escaped after raping 11 girls at a popular hotel in Ibadan.

She said the suspect was caught a week later at another hotel at Sango, Ibadan, where he allegedly raped four other girls.

Okuwobi said the suspect, after raping the girls, usually carted away their belongings, including trinkets, money, handsets and clothes.

Okuwobi said: "The suspect was always successful with his dastardly act because he always drugged his victims."

She said the suspect on January 19 brought 11 girls from Lagos for a party in Ibadan, adding that it was a ploy to lure them into sex.

The police spokesperson explained that on getting to Ibadan, the suspect lodged the girls at the popular hotel, raped them and later disappeared.

Okuwobi also said the suspect ran out of luck when he was caught a week later in another hotel with four other girls.

He was said to have drugged and raped them while attempting to cart away their belongings.

Nigeria move to 15th
Posted: 2010-02-03 18:03

A bronze medal finish at the African Cup of Nations has seen Nigeria jump seven places to 15th in the world and second in Africa, behind Egypt, who climb to their highest ever ranking of 10th in the world.

The ranking is Nigeria's second highest, since being placed 5th in April 1994, the highest ever by any African country. It also marks a major improvement in Nigeria's position from when current coach Shuaibu Amodu took over.

After the African Nations Cup in 2008, Berti Vogts left Nigeria ranked 46th in the world and 7th in Africa. Two years later, Amodu's team have slashed 31 places off the world ranking.

Nations Cup finalists Ghana also moved up 7 places to 27th in the world and 5th in Africa. Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire paid for their failure to reach the semifinals, dropping to fourth and fifth in Africa, respectively.

Cameroon dropped 9 places to 20th, while Cote d'Ivoire slipped six places to 22nd.

Zambia, who lost on penalties to Nigeria, moved 11 places to 73rd, and Malawi also made significant progress, moving 17 places to 82nd.

A total of 82 international “A” matches were taken into account for this edition of the ranking, 15 of which were played in 2009 (total of 849 “A” matches played in 2009).

In addition to the 29 matches played in the Africa Cup of Nations, 11 continental qualifying matches and 42 friendlies were played.

Nigeria accounts for 60% of Ghana’s foreign investment, GIPC
Business Jan 20, 2010 By Yinka Kolawole
Nigerian businesses account for about 60 percent of foreign investment in Ghana, aided by the enabling investment climate of the West African country.

Director, Marketing and Public Relations, Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Mr. Edward Ashong-Lartey, stated this last week, in Lagos, at a forum to announce the forthcoming 2010 International Business Events Management (IBEM) conference billed for Ghana in March.

GIPC is a one-stop government agency, in the office of the Ghanaian Presidency, that facilitates and supports local and foreign investors in both the manufacturing and services sectors of Ghana.

According to him, the level of Nigerian investment in Ghana is very high, especially with the entrance of communications giant, Globacom, along with some other companies, into the country, adding that the Ghanaian officials to discuss possible areas of further collaboration with Nigerian investors and the kind of incentives that will promote investment and business relations between both countries, ahead of the IBEM conference.

Ashong-Lartey noted that the forthcoming event with the theme: “Investing and Growing Your Business in Ghana – Challenges and Opportunities”, is aimed at enabling investors both in Africa and other continents to harness the business opportunities that are abound in Ghana, adding that the interest on Nigeria is borne out of the fact that she has the experience in manpower and technical capacity that are believed would be relevant to Ghana to develop its nascent sectors, especially oil and gas. “Talk about the population, the land mass, abundant natural resources, technocrats and so on. Already, Nigeria is seriously playing active role in Ghana’s economy,” he stated.

He said that GIPC sees investment opportunities for Nigerians in agriculture and agro-processing; fish processing; sports, Leisure and Infrastructure; transport; infrastructure, power and tele-communications, among others.

“Government would harness the opportunity that abound in the discovery of and exploration of oil in the country to woo and encourage would-be investors. All expectations of investors are assured and would not be dashed,” he stated.

The Ghanaian government official,  however, acknowledged that the country was currently experiencing some challenges in the areas of security, high interest rates, bank charges and inadequate power generation (at 1,850-mega watts) that may discourage investors, but noted that the government was working seriously on ways to address the issues. He said, for instance, that about six foreign companies have indicated interest to use gas to produce energy with the hope of boosting the power supply before the end of 2010, adding that tax holidays were being considered for some sectors and tourists just to create conducive environment for investors in the country.

Targets participants for the forthcoming conference, according to Ashong-Lartey, include manufacturers in Europe, America, UK, Asia and Africa; local and foreign investors, chambers of commerce and industry, regional and multinational corporate bodies, oil and gas companies, banks and financial institutions.

Ghana seeks to diversify Nigerian foreign investments
Thursday 21 January 2010 / by Konye Obaji Ori

Nigeria has recently emerged as Ghana’s biggest economic partner, contributing to over 60 per cent of Ghana’s foreign investment. But the Ghanaian government has sought to attract other foreign investments into the country, both to diversify investments and bolster economic growth.
According to reports, the height of Nigerian investment in Ghana rose with the entrance of communications giant, Globacom, along with some other companies, into the Ghanaian market.

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has called on Nigerians to take advantage of available investment opportunities in several sectors, i.e., agriculture and agro-processing; fish processing; sports, Leisure and Infrastructure; transport; infrastructure, power and tele-communications, among others.

Parallelly, the Ghanaian economic sector has targeted other local and foreign investors, including chambers of commerce and industry, regional and multinational corporate bodies, oil and gas companies, banks and financial institutions as it seeks "to harness the business opportunities that are abound in Ghana," indicated the marketing and public relations officer of The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Mr. Edward Ashong-Lartey.

The 2010 International Business Events Management (IBEM) conference, an international business event themed; "Investing and Growing Your Business in Ghana - Challenges and Opportunities", is expected to converge potential investors in the west African country in March.

A natural Ghana-Nigeria collaboration

Mr. Edward Ashong-Lartey also assured a group of Nigerians in Lagos last week that Ghana would discuss possible areas of further collaboration with Nigerian investors and the kind of incentives that will promote investment and business relations between both countries. For him, Nigeria’s technical capacity and experience in manpower are relevant to the development of Ghana’s nascent sectors, especially oil and gas.

"Talk about the population, the land mass, abundant natural resources, technocrats and so on. Already, Nigeria is seriously playing active role in Ghana’s economy. Government would harness the opportunity that abounds in the discovery of and exploration of oil in the country to woo and encourage would-be investors. All expectations of investors are assured and would not be dashed," Ashong-Lartey stated.

Challenges

Despite the lure of the investment friendly Ghana, Mr. Edward Ashong-Lartey warned that the country was currently experiencing some challenges in the areas of security, high interest rates, bank charges and inadequate power generation [ 1,850-mega watts) that may discourage investors, but noted that the government was working seriously on ways to address the issues.

Woman, 52, found dead in hotel room
National News Feb 1, 2010 By Evelyn Usman
THE Police in Lagos have begun a manhunt for a man whose female companion died weekend in a guest room in Agege area of the state.

This is just as the identity of the female companion was discovered to be that of one Mrs Folorunsho, a married woman with five children. She was 52-year-old.

The deceased and his unidentified male companion, as gathered, arrived Ayoola Guest House located at 89, Old Ota Road, Isale-Odo, at about 8 p.m. on Friday.

However, at about 11p.m., the love birds had not checked out, even when the time they booked for had expired.

Out of concern, one of the attendants was said to have gone to knock on the door. But to his surprise, the door was not locked from within. Apparently out of curiosity, he reportedly opened the door where to his shock, Mrs Folorunsho laid still on the bed, half nude.

Confirming the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba , said policemen from Elere division were contacted.

The male companion, he said, bolted before the attendants knew about the incident.

“The body has been deposited at the Isolo General Hospital mortuary for autopsy while manhunt for her male companion is in progress. The case is also under investigation,” Mba said.

K4:
@Bandit C.  The gullibility of some Nigerians is simply amazing. You’ve clearly shown yourself to be nothing but a , backside.

Now let me tell you a few home truths. The GDP of a country is measured by the totality of wealth generated within that nation space. We all know virtually nothing is produced in Nigeria these days. Who dash them common electricity? As a matter of fact, virtually every single item used in Nigeria is imported, including toothpicks. And that is why you see all those ships lined up at Apapa and Tin Can ports for weeks waiting to berth. And that is why most companies are moving to Ghana.

The only phenomenon keeping Nigeria afloat at this time is oil industry, which is dominated by Western firms. I wonder what happened to the groundnuts pyramids in Kano, the oil palm plantations in Yorubaland and the former Midwest? Thanks to oil, Nigerians don’t have to do anything-all they do is to gather in Abuja every month to collect their allocation from the federation account. Now, revenue from oil is huge factor in computing Nigeria’s GDP. I am sure you will not dispute that. By the way do you know Nigeria has made as much from oil as the United Arab Emirate?

Regrettably, the fact that Nigerian earns billions of dollars annually in oil revenue tells only a small part of the story. The real story is that very few privileged Nigerians are the only ones enjoying the oil wealth. How else can you explain that fact that 90% of Nigerians survive on less than $2 a day? How can you explain the fact that with your so-called enormous GDP, unemployment is officially 80%? How else do you explain the fact that erosion is decimating the entire southeast? How do you explain the crumbling infrastructure? How do you explain the fact that students these days are either love-peddlers or armed robbers/cultists? How is that PHCN hardly provides electricity despite all of Nigeria’s “wealth”?

On paper, Nigeria it may appear Nigeria has “a huge GDP” but in reality the oil money ends up in the pockets of a few Nigerians and their foreign collaborators. So stop all the nonsense about GDP. It is about how you manage your resources, which Ghana has done a terrific job with. Why do you think hundreds of Nigerians are moving to Ghana these days? I think there are about 60 or so flights between Lagos and Accra.ABC transports and others are also doing brisk business.

You can say all you want, but the people will always vote with their feet. They will go to the country where they think living conditions are better and where things work. And that is exactly what is happening.
;ghana must go.ghana man get a life.

Sheryl Cwele: South African minister's wife on cocaine charges

Sheryl Cwele, herself a high ranking local government official, will remain in custody until a bail application in several weeks time.

The 50-year-old faces charges alongside a Nigerian man relating to procuring two women to smuggle drugs from Turkey and South America.

One of the women, who claims she was directly recruited by Cwele, will appear as the state's main witness, prosecutors said.

The opposition Democratic Alliance has demanded that the arrested woman's husband, State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele, be brought before Parliament and consider his position, claiming that Cwele may have used her husband's contacts to gather intelligence to cover up her activities.

Mr Cwele has denied all knowledge of any alleged drug trafficking.

Cwele's arrest comes months after an investigation by a local newspaper which linked her to the jailing in Brazil of a single mother who was found with 22lbs (9.2kg) of cocaine in her luggage, worth approximately £300,000.

Pietermaritzburg High Court heard that Cwele, who was arrested at her municipal office on Friday, faces three charges alongside Nigerian Frank Nabolis - one count of dealing in dangerous dependency-producing drugs and two counts of incitement to dealing in dangerous dependency- producing drugs, dating back to May and June 2008.

The charges relate to procuring Charmaine Moss to collect drugs in Turkey and another, Tessa Beetge, to smuggle 9kg of cocaine from South America.

Prosecutors said they would oppose an application for bail.

In a statement, the Democratic Alliance, said: "This is disturbing news and raises a number of serious questions regarding the minister.

"We believe that he must demonstrate to the South African public that he is in no way compromised by this matter; if he fails to do so, he ought to stand down from his position right away."

Ado Ekiti – A  first class monarch in Ekiti State, the Attah of  Aiyede, Oba Adeleye Orisagbemi, and the acting provost, College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Dr Gabriel Olowoyo,  were, Saturday, kidnapped at different  locations and  killed in an auto-crash as the abductors tried to escape with them.

Sunday Vanguard reliably gathered that the monarch  was  coming from a function in Lagos  with his son, Lanre and driver when they were kidnapped   along  Ilawe-Ado Ekiti Road.

The kidnappers, numbering seven, allegedly  operated in a  Liteace bus and raided as they  passed through Ikole Ekiti  until  they got to Ilasa  in Ekiti East Local Government area of the state  where they  kidnapped  Olowoyo,  his personal assistant and  driver as they  were returning from Abuja.

The kidnappers  were said to have intercepted the provost’s  Toyota Camry official car after  buying fuel in the town.

The kidnappers were said to have ordered all their victims into  their bus  and drove towards Kabba Lokoja Road where, upon sighting a patrol team   of the Federal Road Safety Commission [FRSC], the driver  lost control of the vehicle  and crashed into a tree, killing the monarch, the acting provost and their drivers.

According to Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment, Otunba Segun Olanrewaju,  who hails from Ayede Ekiti,   the monarch’s  son, Lanre, survived the accident, but suffered  fracture.

He explained that the provost and the two aides  were returning from Abuja where Olowoyo  had gone for a meeting.

Ekiti State governor, Engr. Segun Oni, yesterday, described  the death of the monarch,  provost  and their drivers as shocking.

Chief press secretary to the governor, Mr. Wale Ojo_Lanre, in a statement, said the governor was shocked when he received the news of the abduction and death.
