Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has said that many emergency billionaires emerged under the Goodluck Jonathan administration because of unbridled corruption. He stated this while praising the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s strides in the fight against corruption in the country. According to him, the successes recorded by the current administration in the fight against corruption was one of the many legacies that it would bequeath to the next. He identified the other legacies as railways, roads, among others. Amaechi said that while corrupt enrichment under the Buhari administration was not totally impossible, it was not as commonplace as witnessed under the previous administration. “We are leaving quite a lot. When I talk to people, they mention railway, but I tell them to study the government to know that we have more than the railways. “The first legacy, as a former chairman of the Governors Forum, I want Nigerians to be honest; can you openly take money in this government? “I am not saying whether we are corrupt or not. Let us assume we are corrupt, can you openly take money in this government? In the past governments, what happened? You can take money in the streets. Corruption was so pervasive that nobody was talking about it. It was not hidden that people completely and openly displayed their wealth. “Most of those who did that had nothing to do to show for it. They did not have a carpentry shop, but they were billionaires. They did not hide it; but here, if you are stealing, it is done quietly. I am not saying it is good, it is a sin punishable. “In the previous government you could steal and you won’t be caught. If you were caught, there won’t be consequences. But in this government, if you steal there are consequences,” Amaechi told Daily Trust. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says it has recorded more deaths from COVID-19 complications as infections continue to surge in the country. The NCDC confirmed 650 new cases in 16 states of the federation and the FCT, with 56 deaths across the country on Saturday, via its verified website on Sunday morning, adding to the recent surge in infections driven by the spread of the Delta variant in the country. The News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 650 fresh cases reported on Saturday was an increase from the 618 cases posted the previous day in Nigeria. It added that the 56 additional COVID-19 related deaths reported on Saturday also increased the country’s fatality figure to 2,361. The agency noted that the number of the country’s active coronavirus infections had, however, dropped from 18,210, reported on Friday to 10,575, reported on Saturday. It did not indicate if majority of the known active cases were from the contagious Delta variant, or other variants of concern as stated by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the latest NCDC data, Lagos had the highest number of infections with 281 cases. Ondo Followed with 95 infections, while Rivers had 80. Amongst others were Akwa Ibom (59), Oyo (24), Ekiti (22), Delta (20), Edo (18), Enugu (15), Bayelsa (14), Ogun (11), Kaduna ( , Plateau (7), Kano (6), the FCT (5), Gombe (3), and Abia (2).It noted that Borno, Nasarawa and Sokoto states reported zero cases. The NCDC added that over 2.7 million samples of the virus out of the nation’s roughly 200 million population were tested and 178,047 cases treated with 8,232 discharged on Saturday, the highest number of cases discharged since the advent of third wave of the pandemic. It noted that the multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 2, continued to coordinate the national response activities. As at Saturday, the public health agency also reported that the country’s total COVID-19 cases stood at 199,983 infections reported across the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory. Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has threatened to lead a boycott of government-owned media and a media war against the Muhammadu Buhari administration if it does not stop trying to gag the media. He stated this at the Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos during an interaction with the media on Friday. The octogenarian was reacting to the query issued to Channels Television by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over some interviews the regulator deemed “unfair” to the government. Soyinka described the query, which has been equally condemned by many prominent Nigerians, “as one of the most semi-illiterate queries” he had ever seen. The popular playwright said, “Who decides professionalism? Is it NBC or mass communication fora? It is Channels TV; it can be anyone. This is the first time I am seeing a kind of query the media is getting. This is one of the most semi illiterate queries that I have ever seen. Next time, those letters should be thrown into garbage bin. This should be stopped as soon as possible. “We have a responsibility to tell the government that next time any media institution is sanctioned on this trivial or ludicrous ground, we will fulfill our responsibility by mobilising the nation to boycott all government media and we shall wage this media war against the government. “Decree Number 4 has no place in a democracy and it is about time we emphasise that both in language and in act.” Read more...https://www.herald.ng/soyinka-vows-to-lead-media-war-against-buharis-govt-if/ |

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina has said that reactions to the bandit attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna further showed that Nigeria is “filled with haters of government”. Adesina said that Nigerians were “ungrateful, unthankful and ungracious” towards the current administration despite many successes recorded in tackling the nation’s security challenges. He stated this in the latest installment of his weekly column, “From The Inside…Fridays With Femi Adesina”. Recall that bandits attacked the military university on Tuesday, killing Lieutenant Commander Wulah and Flight Lieutenant Okoronkwo while Major Datong remains missing. Many prominent Nigerians and groups decried the incident, saying it further proved the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s inability to secure the country. In the wake of the incident, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State described President Buhari’s as the worst administration in terms of security and a retired Navy Commodore, Kunle Olawunmi touted the attack as an “aberration”. Reacting to the flurry of criticisms, Adesina wrote, “The news headlines, the slant of the stories, the analyses and discussions, all tended to paint a narrative of the humiliation of our military, the failure of government, and the fact that anarchy had been unleashed on the land. Watching, listening to and reading all the deliberate obfuscation of the matter reinforces the conviction once again that our country is filled with haters of government, of humanity, of good, and even of God. They deliberately muddy the waters, rejoice at evil and all forms of iniquity.” Read more here...https://www.herald.ng/femi-adesina-nda-attack-further-shows-nigerias-filled-with-haters-of-govt/ |
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has sanctioned an online lending platform, Soko Lending Company Ltd., (Soko Loans), for data privacy invasion. Mrs Hadiza Umar, Head, Corporate Affairs and External Relations of NITDA, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja. Umar said the action was taken following series of complaints against the company for unauthorised disclosures, failure to protect customers’ personal data, defamation of character and violating the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR). According to her, one of such complaints filed by Bloomgate Solicitors on behalf of its client, the data subject, was received on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, which prompted the agency to investigate the claims. Umar explained that Soko Loans granted its customers uncollateralised loans which required a loanee to download its mobile application on the phone and activate a direct debit in the company’s favour. “In such manner, the application gains access to the loanee’s phone contacts,” she said. According to one of the complainants, when he failed to meet up with his repayment obligations due to insufficient credit in his account on the date the direct debit was to take effect, the company unilaterally sent privacy invading messages to the complainant’s contacts. She said NITDA’s investigation revealed that the complainants’ contacts who were neither parties to the loan transaction nor consented to the processing of their data had confirmed the receipt of such messages. The agency also made efforts to get Soko Loan to change the unethical practice but to no avail. She added that following the investigation, it secured a lien order on one of the company’s accounts by which it could come up with privacy enhancing solutions for its business model. Umar said instead, Soko Loan decided to rebrand and direct its customers to pay into its other business accounts. She said: “The agency’s investigation further revealed that the company embeds trackers that share data with third parties inside its mobile application without providing users information about it or using the appropriate lawful basis. “NITDA has, therefore, found Soko Loan and its entities in violation of use of non-conforming privacy notice, contrary to the content of the NDPR, insufficient lawful basis for processing personal data, contrary to Articles 2.2 and 2.3 of the NDPR.” It said the company was involved in “illegal data sharing without appropriate lawful basis, contrary to Article 2.2 of the NDPR, unwillingness to cooperate with the Data Protection Authority, contrary to Article 3.1 (1) of Data Protection Implementation Framework and non-filing of NDPR audit reports through a licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation (DPCO). “In view of the foregoing and in consideration of its implication on the privacy of Nigerians and erosion of trust in the digital economy, NITDA hereby imposes a monetary sanction of N10 million on Soko Lending Company Ltd. “NITDA also directs that no further privacy invading messages be sent to any Nigerian until the company and its entities show full compliance with the NDPR.” She said the agency also directed the company to pay for the conduct of a Data Protection Impact Assessment by a NITDA appointed DPCO on its operation and placement on a mandatory IT and Data Protection oversight for nine months. Umar clarified that the incriminating aspects of the investigation was deposited with the Nigerian Police to determine if the executives of the company were liable to imprisonment for violating Section 17 of the NITDA Act, 2007. She, however, reminded all Nigerian businesses and data controllers of their obligation to engage NITDA-licensed DPCO to guide them toward compliance with the data protection law. Umar reiterated that the agency was committed to fully enforcing the NDPR with the aim of sanitising the operating environment, instilling confidence in the digital economy and protecting the right to data privacy of Nigerians. She recalled that the agency issued the NDPR as Nigeria’s first comprehensive framework for the protection of personal data. She said the regulation provided the principles, framework, protection and processing of personal data of Nigerians and residents. A physician, Dr. Agnes Nwoke, has said that the cultural practice of consuming palm wine or pap by nursing mothers do not enhance the flow of breast milk. Nwoke, who works with St. Charles Clinic in Urum, spoke on Saturday in Awka on the sideline of the commemoration of 2021 World Breastfeeding Week. The theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility”. The physician said there was the need to demystify the myth about the effect of palm wine or pap on breastfeeding. According to her, breast milk production obeys the law of demand and supply. “It is not the amount of fluid taken via pap or palm wine, it is the intensity of suckling and time of suckling that help the nursing mother to produce more milk. “The more the breast is emptied, the more it produces or flows with milk. “Also mothers should breast feed more at night because the hormone called prolactin functions more at night as it contributes to high flow of breast milk,” she said. Nwoke said that palm wine contained alcohol on the average up to six per cent, saying it might have sedative effects which can make mothers and even the babies to sleep. “When a nursing mother takes palm wine, the alcohol in the palm wine gets into the breast milk and it can make the baby to be agitated or sleep and unable to suck. “Palm wine does not enhance the flow of breast milk, it is a cultural practice, not medically proven. “Breast flow is, however, increased by staying hydrated, eating a well-balanced diet, putting baby to breast on demand, resting and having enough sleep. “Breastfeeding is important for the optimal nourishment, immunity, growth and development of the infant," Nwoke said. It was hailed as the best thing to happen in the oil and gas sector especially in Nigeria – a serial importer of crude products. The year was 2013 and in September of that year, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, announced yet another of his gargantuan projects – the construction of the biggest single train refinery in the world with production expected to begin in 2016. Many delays and postponements later, the project has been bogged down by barely serviceable debts, poor planning, lack of centralized project management, mismanagement and has now become a huge albatross on Nigeria’s neck costing the country lots of FX and creating huge problems in return. VALUATION A project that started as a 9billion dollars project is now being valued at over 16billion dollars, albeit incorrectly. Sampling expert opinion from leading players in the oil & Gas industry, it is estimated that a refinery of that size should ideally cost within the range of 11 to 12billion dollars to build in Nigeria. Notwithstanding the conflicting figures, it was recently announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, will be taking a 20% stake in the uncompleted, non-functional Dangote Refinery at the cost of 3.8billion dollars. Whilst this baffled many, NNPC’s actions effectively over-valued the yet to be completed refinery to 19billion dollars. PROJECT DELAYS OR PROJECT DELAY-ED. As at last count, the completion of the refinery had been moved eight times. Whilst some might say this is in character for Dangote Industries and their numerous projects across different sectors, the problem is deeper rooted. A contractor at the delayed refinery project, speaking under the condition of anonymity said that poor planning, underpayment of contractors, and a lack of proper project management with over 40 contractors on site has led to most of the delays. He also added that of the 40, none is willing to commission as there is no clear delegation of duty and over-decentralization leading to absolute chaos. A fish farming expert, Mr Okon Amah, has urged local fish farmers to apply basic preventive measures, including using bitter leaf juice, to stop fish mortality in their ponds. Amah made the call in Lagos on Wednesday. “The basic step is that you need to change your water regularly and feed the fish regularly to prevent mortality because fish are cannibalistic in nature. “Fish mortality can also be prevented by the addition of salt to the pond water, salinity in water helps prevent the death of fish. “It can get messy when bacteria overruns your fish pond. Salt fights bacteria in fish water and without it, bacteria will spread and this will lead to the death of the fish in their numbers. A Federal High Court sitting in Jos has sentenced a 22-year-old woman, Celine Sele-Ezekiel, to five years imprisonment for unlawfully possessing and attempting to give her boyfriend some hard drugs in prison. Sele-Ezekiel was arrested on May 10 by the personnel of Jos Correctional Centre personnel with 700g of Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana) and 43.2g of Diazepam tablet, wrapped in a container which she attempted to give her boyfriend, an inmate of the custodial centre. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that it was at point of arrest that the personnel of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were invited and the convict was handed over to them. When the case came up before Justice Musa Kurya, the convict pleaded guilty to the offence. The judge, who found Sele-Ezekiel guilty of the offence and sentenced her, described her action as “very strange” and “uncalled for.” According to him, the sentencing the convict will serve as deterrent to others who may also be thinking of engaging in such a bad habit. Earlier, the NDLEA Prosecution Counsel, Mr Uche Chukwu, told the court that for unlawfully possessing such hard drugs, Sele-Ezekiel had committed an offence contrary to Section 19 of NDLEA Act, CAP N30, Law of Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as amended). “Since Sele-Ezekiel had pleaded guilty to the offence, she should be given summary trial,” Chukwu pleaded with the court. He called a witness, Mr Ezekiel Yusuf, an NDLEA official, who testified and tendered the exhibits, including the convict’s statement and the substances. The Defense Counsel, Dr Joshua Akubo, however, pleaded with the court to tamper Justice with mercy, saying that her client had no previous criminal record and that she was ‘young girl’. Justice Kurya said that the sentence, which was without an option of fine, must commence from the day of her conviction. The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has reaffirmed that construction of the Second Niger Bridge would be completed next year. The minister gave the assurance at a forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, to mark the sixth year anniversary of the present administration. According to Fashola, the bridge, which will serve as a major link between South East and South West Nigeria will be delivered between the second and third quarters of 2022. Records show that construction of the bridge commenced on Sept. 1, 2018, with construction cost put at N336 billion when the contract deal was signed. The minister, however, made no mention if the construction cost of the facility had changed since the commencement of work. He said that the project would facilitate influx of investments to the South East when completed. Fashola said that the construction work had gone beyond the water level, explaining that most bridge works were done underwater. “So, what you see currently is the final work. The sub-structure which entailed building cement structures underwater often costs a lot of money. “We should finish the bridge next year between the second quarter and third quarter,’’ he affirmed, saying that construction time was lost because of COVID-19. The bridge is 1.6km long and furnished with other ancillary infrastructure, including a 10.3km highway and an inter-change, expected to be completed next year. The bridge spans from Asaba in Delta State to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State. The existing Niger Bridge, linking Onitsha and Asaba was completed in December 1965. It was built by the French construction giant, Dumez. Read more: https://www.herald.ng/fashola-fg-will-complete-2nd-niger-bridge-next-year/ |
A mentally derailed man identified as Mr Denen has kept many in shock in the city of Makurdi, the Benue State capital as residents continue to troop to him at the JS Tarka Foundation where he offers medical services to a large number of people with different health challenges. The mentally unstable man would upon seeing a patient, write a number of Tiv traditional ailment affecting the person and direct them to different traditional doctors who are expected to treat the patient, a Benue State broadcast platform, Citizen TV reported on Wednesday. The man had Masters Degree from the University of Jos before his unfortunate predicament, Daily Post reported. The source said a large number of patients usually gather at the JS Tarka Foundation in High-Level Makirdi to consult the man over their health issues. According to a lady who gave her name as Sandra, she heard about the man and had to come because she had acute pains in her chest and it seemed to have defiled all medical conditions. Sandra said she had conducted the ‘mad doctor’ and already given a piece of paper containing what was wrong with her and she was going to see a traditional healer. “He has shown me where to go and I am going there. I heard about him and have to come all the way from my village to try and see how it will go,” another patient Mr Aondohemen told the TV crew, saying he sees it as luck. Also a worker of the man who prefered anonymity said, he had part of his head swollen up and had sought medical attention from all the hospitals without any help. According to him, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom had given him money for treatment on several occasions but it didn’t heal until the day he met the mentally challenged man. He simply asked him to apply a certain herb and he was healed. “Since then, I always come here every evening after my work to help him on guiding people,” he added. A 30-year-old woman who works to support the mad man in attending to people recounted how people had thanked the man for helping them. “They always come here. After being healed, they come to give him cash donations. Government officials, public servants, policemen and many other people,” She said. Following the trend, a Facebook user took to his page on Friday to express shock over the activities of the healer-man. According to him, “I’m a bit confused. I was told of a ‘mad’ native doctor who sits at the entrance of IBB Square Makurdi and prescribes native medicine for sick people within Makurdi town. “I learnt of this man through one of my friends who asked me to accompany him and his sick brother to consult the man for a medical solution. I was surprised when I saw a lot of people hovering around a supposed “mad” man for medical help. “A young woman within the age of 29 to 30 years appeared and presented herself to be working for the supposed “mad” man. “Soon as we were about leaving, some group of persons came with gifts and money to give thanks to the man for healing their sick son. ‘I also met one of my old girlfriends standing close to the man and she also testified during our conversation that she had also received useful medical advice from the man. “What the man does is that he will listen to you and consult his oracle and then directs you on where to get native medical attention or help. “My friend who brought in a stroke patient walked towards the man to make inquiries and to my greatest surprise, he politely asked him to queue up that he will not attend to anyone no matter how highly placed except he queues up behind the other patients who were already waiting in line. “The man was full of confidence and guts. He was seen sitting with beautiful girls between the ages of 22 to 24 and above. “Stories making the rounds also have it that the man has his first and master’s degrees at the prestigious University of Jos. I’m still surprised and shocked to my bones.” However, another beneficiary from Markurdi said God was working through the man to heal people of their various diseases. Let me correct the impression of “Mr Denen,” herein referred to as “a mad man”. “For Christians, God can appear to you in any form and you may not know. Generally, looking at this graduate of the Prestigious UniJos, you may easily conclude he’s a mentally unstable, but conversely, a mad man is easily identified by his behaviours and utterances, whereas, the case of this old man is different. “Personally, I met him there since April 2020 but had several interactive forums with him just early this year. Let me correct a misrepresentation here, this old man herein referred to as “a madman” doesn’t collect money from clients. He collects gifts especially, food and snacks. “Yes, beautiful girls may cluster around him in an ambiguous presentation herein as presented, their liberation is sure thereafter. “In all, I wish to uphold the fact mentioned by people that he is curing them through the “instrumentality of God the creator” as he normally tells people. It wasn’t a poor or nasty outing with him anyways”, he stated. Read more: https://www.herald.ng/wonders-mentally-derailed-man-offers-medical-services-to-residents-in-benue/ |
Despite a presidential order to shoot any non-state actor wielding an AK-47 rifle, the Kaduna State Police Command says its operatives arrested a suspected bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle in the Kudaru forest of Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Mohammed Jalige disclosed the arrest in a statement on Saturday in Kaduna. President Muhammadu Buhari had given the order on March 11, 2021, at the State House, Abuja, while meeting with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria co-chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. The president, who apprised the meeting with efforts by the government to improve the security situation in the country, said his administration has recorded appreciable successes in the North-East and South-South parts of the country. ‘‘But what surprises is what is happening now in the North West where the same people, with the same culture are killing each other, taking their livestock and burning properties. ‘‘As a result of that, we had a four-hour meeting of the National Security Council attended by the Ministers of Internal Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs, Service Chiefs, Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector-General of Police and others and we gave clear instructions. ‘‘One thing that got to the press which I read myself was that anyone with an AK-47 will be shot. ‘‘This is because AK-47 is supposed to be registered and it is only given to security officials. ‘‘We closed the borders for some years but the intelligence report I’m getting on a daily basis is that those who are conducting the abductions, the killings and so on are still not short of arms and ammunition,’’ he said. President Buhari restated the order when he visited Lagos on June 10. In his Saturday statement as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jalige said the operatives on June 18 at about 0745 hrs, while on routine patrol along Kudaru forest in Saminaka, Lere LGA of Kaduna state, intercepted a Volkswagen Golf vehicle, green in color with Reg.No.KAG 142 AA, heading towards Kaduna. He explained that the operatives noticed the suspicious disposition of the occupants of the said vehicle and tried to flag them down but they immediately parked some distance away and took to their heels into the forest. “The policemen, however, engaged them in a shootout and succeeded in apprehending one suspect and when the vehicle was searched, an AK47 rifle was found concealed in a bid to escape the eagle eyes of the security forces along the route. According to him, the suspect is currently undergoing thorough investigation and is giving useful information to the police while concerted efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang to face the full wrath of the law. Jalige said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Umar Muri, assured members of the public that the command would do everything possible to ensure that members of the gang were dislodged, and their operational weapons recovered. He also charged officers and men of the command to be vigilant at all times to effectively police their areas of responsibilities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the use of tobacco products other than cigarettes, such as vaporisers like shisha, was on the increase in Africa. This is just as the world health body revealed that no fewer than 146 million Africans die annually from tobacco-related diseases. Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa said these on Thursday during a virtual press conference. Moeti said tobacco was the leading cause of preventable deaths in the world and emphasised that “smoking damages nearly every organ in the body”. The director also said that “globally, exposure to secondhand smoke kills more than 1.2 million people yearly.” Moeti said that quitting tobacco was the way to reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, stroke and other diseases, noting that it would also increase one’s life expectancy. She added that “quitting tobacco is hard but today is a good day to start. “Make the decision to live a life controlled by you and not tobacco. “It may seem impossible, or like smoking isn’t a big deal. But what you don’t do today may end up causing future health problems or, worse, premature death,” Moeti said. She said that one in five adolescents in Africa now used tobacco, saying “this must change. Quit smoking and be a part of the solution.” Read Also: https://www.herald.ng/who-condemns-shisha-says-146m-africans-die-yearly-from-tobacco-related-diseases/ |
World Health Organisation (WHO) says one in every 100 dies by their own hand, noting that suicide remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. WHO, in its latest estimates, published on Thursday in “Suicide worldwide in 2019” revealed that every year, more people die as a result of suicide than HIV, malaria or breast cancer ̶ or war and homicide. “In 2019, more than 700,000 people died by suicide: one in every 100 deaths, prompting WHO to produce new guidance to help countries improve suicide prevention and care. “We cannot – and must not – ignore suicide,” said Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation, adding that, “Each one is a tragedy. “Our attention to suicide prevention is even more important now, after many months living with the COVID-19 pandemic, with many of the risk factors for suicide ̶ job loss, financial stress and social isolation – still very much present. “The new guidance that WHO is releasing today provides a clear path for stepping up suicide prevention efforts,” he said. The report stated that among young people aged 15-29, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death after road injury, tuberculosis and interpersonal violence. “Rates vary, between countries, regions, and between males and females. More than twice as many males die due to suicide as females (12.6 per 100, 000 males compared with 5.4 per 100 000 females). “Suicide rates among men are generally higher in high-income countries (16.5 per 100, 000); for females, the highest suicide rates are found in lower-middle-income countries (7.1 per 100, 000). “Suicide rates in the WHO African (11.2 per 100, 000), European (10.5 per 100, 000) and South-East Asia (10.2 per 100, 000) regions were higher than the global average (9.0 per 100, 000) in 2019. “The lowest suicide rate was in the Eastern Mediterranean region (6.4 per 100, 000),” it stated. According to the report, globally the suicide rate is decreasing and in the Americas it is going up. It stated that suicide rates fell in the 20 years between 2000 and 2019, with the global rate decreasing by 36 per cent, with decreases ranging from 17 per cent in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to 47 per cent in the European Region and 49 per cent in the Western Pacific. “But in the Americas Region, rates increased by 17 per cent in the same time period. “Although some countries have placed suicide prevention high on their agendas, too many countries remain uncommitted; currently only 38 countries are known to have a national suicide prevention strategy. “A significant acceleration in the reduction of suicides is needed to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) target of a one-third reduction in the global suicide rate by 2030. The UN health agency, therefore, expressed optimism that WHO’s new guidance on suicide would help the world reach the target of reducing the suicide rate by 1/3 by 2030. “WHO’s guidance to suicide prevention, zeros in on four strategies: limiting access to the means of suicide; educating the media on responsible suicide reporting; fostering socio-emotional life skills in adolescents; and early identification, assessment, management and follow-up of those with suicidal thoughts and behaviour. “The guidance highlights that in the social media age, media reports can prompt copycat suicides, especially when surrounding a celebrity. “It calls for suicide coverage to be counteracted with articles highlighting successful recovery from mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts. “It also recommends working with social media companies to increase awareness and remove harmful content,” it added. The group known as Northern Consensus Movement, NCM, declared Kanu wanted over the killings and destruction of properties owned by Northerners in the Southeast. Addressing a press conference the President of the group, Dr Auwal Abdullahi, also placed a N100m bounty on Kanu. He said Kanu should be captured and brought to them for onward handing over to security agents. Abdullahi accused Kanu of using IPOB and the Eastern Security Network, ESN, to attack Northerners residing in the Southeast. According to Abdullahi: “We are declaring Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB and ESN wanted for the killings, destructions of properties of Northerners residing and undertaking their lawful businesses in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. “We call on all countries of the world to respect our sovereignty as a nation. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, is the man and brain behind the killings and destruction of properties belonging to innocent northerners residing in South-Eastern Nigeria carrying out their legitimate businesses, using his proscribed terrorist organization, IPOB/ESN.” The group urged the United States, US, and German governments to repatriate Kanu back to Nigeria. “Northern Consensus Movement with these organizations has placed a bounty of N100 million as an offer to anyone who can produce Nnamdi Kanu alive, hale and hearty to us for onward delivery to security agencies for continuous prosecution,” he added. An Ikeja High Court on Wednesday night sentenced Francis Atuche, a former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank), to six years’ imprisonment for defrauding the bank of N25.7 billion. In a 12-hour judgment, Justice Lateefa Okunnu also sentenced Ugo Anyanwu, a former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the bank to four years’ imprisonment. The judge held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convicts committed the fraud. Okunnu, however, discharged Atuche’s wife Elizabeth, who was facing trial alongside the duo. Elizabeth was acquitted of counts of conspiracy and stealing brought against her. Atuche and the others had been standing trial in the past 10 years. The judgment began at 9:12a.m. and lasted until 9:21p.m.). “The first defendant (Atuche) and the third defendant (Anyanwu) are found guilty of counts one to 11, 14 to 20, 23 and 24 of the charges contained in the information and are convicted of conspiracy and stealing. “On counts 12, 13, 21, 22 and 26, I pronounce the first to third defendants not guilty as the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. “On counts 25 and 27, the second defendant (Elizabeth) is found not guilty,” Okunnu said. Sentencing the defendants, the judge said that Atuche abused his position of trust by stealing from the bank. “By stealing from the bank, they stole from innocent customers of the bank. “I hereby make an order of restitution against the first and third defendants to refund the sums stated in counts one to 11, 14 and 24. “The sums are to paid to the relevant agencies that recovered the funds on behalf of the bank. “The first defendant is hereby sentenced to six years’ imprisonment on counts one to 11, 14 to 20, 23 and 24,” Okunnu said. “The third defendant is hereby sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on counts one to 11, 14 to 20, 23 and 24,” she held. The judge, however, held that the sentences would run concurrently. During the judgment, Okunnu said Atuche and Anyanwu defrauded Bank PHB of billions of naira using well-recognised stockbrokers to transfer money belonging to the bank under the guise of loans and shares. “It was a well-planned, well-executed scheme but the bubble burst when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervened,” she said. The judge held that neither Atuche of Anyanwu was convincing as ‘witnesses of truth’. “The first defendant (Atuche) was diversionary and evasive on the witness stand; sometimes confrontational and rude. “The third defendant (Anyanwu) was also combative and rude under cross-examination,” she said. Okunnu noted that a large volume of documentary evidence was produced by parties in the case. She said that documents such as bank records, e-mails and statements of key actors in the case played a key role in securing the conviction of the defendants. Dismissing the charge of stealing against Elizabeth regarding two companies affiliated to her which were said to have fraudulently received two billion naira worth of Bank PHB shares, Okunnu held that there was no act of fraud or dishonesty overt or covert that had been linked to Elizabeth.. “Nothing was proved beyond reasonable doubt that she silently or knowingly endorsed the perpetuation of fraud; rather, it was the first defendant (Atuche). “On account of this, the prosecution failed to prove its case of stealing against the second defendant (Elizabeth),” she said. On the charge of conspiracy against Elizabeth, Okunnu held that there was no evidence that linked her to the shares bought for the two companies affiliated with here. “I find that the case of conspiracy does not hold,” the judge said. Elizabeth who was reciting prayers with a rosary during proceedings heaved a sigh of relief upon hearing the verdict. NAN reports that the EFCC team led by Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), had in 2011, charged the trio with a 27-count charge of conspiracy and stealing of N25.7billion belonging to Bank PHB via fictitious loans and shares. Atuche and his spouse were accused of fraudulent conversion of money described as bank loans. The EFCC said that the couple diverted funds belonging to the bank by buying shares for fictitious companies linked to them. Anyanwu was accused of using his position as the bank’s CFO to aid Atuche in committing the crimes. The anti-graft agency said that the trio stole more than N25.7 billion belonging to defunct Bank PHB (now KeyStone Bank) between November 2007 and April 2008, while Atuche was the chief executive officer. Following a stress test conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2009, Bank PHB was classified as distressed and Atuche removed as the Managing Director. He was arraigned alongside his wife and Anyanwu for fraud. A total of 31 witnesses testified during the trial for both the prosecution and defence.
