Business / FG Sanctions Soko Lending Company For Data Privacy Invasion by JPhilip: 8:44pm On Aug 17, 2021
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has sanctioned an online lending platform, Soko Lending Company Ltd., (Soko Loans), for data privacy invasion.

Mrs Hadiza Umar, Head, Corporate Affairs and External Relations of NITDA, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Umar said the action was taken following series of complaints against the company for unauthorised disclosures, failure to protect customers’ personal data, defamation of character and violating the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).

According to her, one of such complaints filed by Bloomgate Solicitors on behalf of its client, the data subject, was received on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, which prompted the agency to investigate the claims.

Umar explained that Soko Loans granted its customers uncollateralised loans which required a loanee to download its mobile application on the phone and activate a direct debit in the company’s favour.

“In such manner, the application gains access to the loanee’s phone contacts,” she said.

According to one of the complainants, when he failed to meet up with his repayment obligations due to insufficient credit in his account on the date the direct debit was to take effect, the company unilaterally sent privacy invading messages to the complainant’s contacts.

She said NITDA’s investigation revealed that the complainants’ contacts who were neither parties to the loan transaction nor consented to the processing of their data had confirmed the receipt of such messages.

The agency also made efforts to get Soko Loan to change the unethical practice but to no avail.

She added that following the investigation, it secured a lien order on one of the company’s accounts by which it could come up with privacy enhancing solutions for its business model.

Umar said instead, Soko Loan decided to rebrand and direct its customers to pay into its other business accounts.

She said: “The agency’s investigation further revealed that the company embeds trackers that share data with third parties inside its mobile application without providing users information about it or using the appropriate lawful basis.

“NITDA has, therefore, found Soko Loan and its entities in violation of use of non-conforming privacy notice, contrary to the content of the NDPR, insufficient lawful basis for processing personal data, contrary to Articles 2.2 and 2.3 of the NDPR.”

It said the company was involved in “illegal data sharing without appropriate lawful basis, contrary to Article 2.2 of the NDPR, unwillingness to cooperate with the Data Protection Authority, contrary to Article 3.1 (1) of Data Protection Implementation Framework and non-filing of NDPR audit reports through a licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation (DPCO).

“In view of the foregoing and in consideration of its implication on the privacy of Nigerians and erosion of trust in the digital economy, NITDA hereby imposes a monetary sanction of N10 million on Soko Lending Company Ltd.

“NITDA also directs that no further privacy invading messages be sent to any Nigerian until the company and its entities show full compliance with the NDPR.”

She said the agency also directed the company to pay for the conduct of a Data Protection Impact Assessment by a NITDA appointed DPCO on its operation and placement on a mandatory IT and Data Protection oversight for nine months.

Umar clarified that the incriminating aspects of the investigation was deposited with the Nigerian Police to determine if the executives of the company were liable to imprisonment for violating Section 17 of the NITDA Act, 2007.

She, however, reminded all Nigerian businesses and data controllers of their obligation to engage NITDA-licensed DPCO to guide them toward compliance with the data protection law.

Umar reiterated that the agency was committed to fully enforcing the NDPR with the aim of sanitising the operating environment, instilling confidence in the digital economy and protecting the right to data privacy of Nigerians.

She recalled that the agency issued the NDPR as Nigeria’s first comprehensive framework for the protection of personal data.

She said the regulation provided the principles, framework, protection and processing of personal data of Nigerians and residents. (NAN)

Health / Pap, Palm Wine Do Not Enhance Flow Of Breast Milk – Doctor Tells Nursing Mothers by JPhilip: 12:53pm On Aug 07, 2021
A physician, Dr. Agnes Nwoke, has said that the cultural practice of consuming palm wine or pap by nursing mothers do not enhance the flow of breast milk.

Nwoke, who works with St. Charles Clinic in Urum, spoke on Saturday in Awka on the sideline of the commemoration of 2021 World Breastfeeding Week.

The theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility”.

The physician said there was the need to demystify the myth about the effect of palm wine or pap on breastfeeding.

According to her, breast milk production obeys the law of demand and supply.
“It is not the amount of fluid taken via pap or palm wine, it is the intensity of suckling and time of suckling that help the nursing mother to produce more milk.

“The more the breast is emptied, the more it produces or flows with milk.

“Also mothers should breast feed more at night because the hormone called prolactin functions more at night as it contributes to high flow of breast milk,” she said.

Nwoke said that palm wine contained alcohol on the average up to six per cent, saying it might have sedative effects which can make mothers and even the babies to sleep.

“When a nursing mother takes palm wine, the alcohol in the palm wine gets into the breast milk and it can make the baby to be agitated or sleep and unable to suck.

“Palm wine does not enhance the flow of breast milk, it is a cultural practice, not medically proven.

“Breast flow is, however, increased by staying hydrated, eating a well-balanced diet, putting baby to breast on demand, resting and having enough sleep.

“Breastfeeding is important for the optimal nourishment, immunity, growth and development of the infant," Nwoke said.

Health / COVID-19: Cloth Masks Won’t Protect You From Delta Variant – Michael Osterholm by JPhilip: 12:37pm On Aug 06, 2021
A top scientist has warned that cloth sheet masks are not going to protect people from the fast-spreading covid-19 Delta variant.

During an interview with CNN on August 2, Michael Osterholm, Ph.D., epidemiologist, and director of the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, made the case that many of the face masks that are widely used aren’t up to snuff when it comes to preventing spreading or inhaling the microscopic aerosols that spread COVID-19.

Specifically, he said it was time for people to upgrade from the cloth masks, bandanas, and gators that do very little to protect against virus transmission.

“You know I wish we could get rid of the term masking because, in fact, it implies that anything you put in front of your face works, and if I could just add a nuance to that which hopefully doesn’t add more confusion is we know today that many of the face cloth coverings that people wear are not very effective in reducing any of the virus movement in or out,” he said.

To point out their ineffectiveness, Osterholm went on to cite an example of the smoke conditions created by wildfires in the Northwest that are currently blanketing parts of the U.S. “Either you’re breathing out or you’re breathing in and in fact if you’re in the upper Midwest right now anybody who’s wearing their face cloth covering can tell you they can smell all the smoke that we’re still getting.”

Instead, Osterholm argued that it was time for people to begin using the right type of mask that could properly slow the spread of the virus.

“We need to talk about better masking,” he argued.

“We need to talk about N95 respirators, which would do a lot for both people who are not yet vaccinated or are not previously infected. Protecting them as well as keeping others who might become infected having been vaccinated from breathing out the virus.”

Osterholm isn’t the first expert to advocate for upgrading PPE. During an appearance on CBS’ Face the Nation on July 25, Scott Gottlieb, MD, former Food&Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner, argued that the right quality mask was necessary to protect against a strain as contagious as the Delta variant.

“It’s not more airborne, and it’s not more likely to be permeable to a mask. So a mask can still be helpful,” Gottlieb told host John Dickerson.

“I think, though, if you’re going to consider wearing a mask, the quality of the mask does matter. So if you can get your hands on a KN95 mask or an N95 mask, that’s going to afford you a lot more protection.”

But while the right type of mask will go far to help stop the spread of COVID, Osterholm also bemoaned the current state of communication from officials, arguing that continuing to roll out shots to the public would be the best way to finally put an end to the pandemic.

“We’re in a very unfortunate situation, [and] we’ve really brought this country to a point of confusion which really misses the main point that we should be focusing on vaccine, vaccine, vaccine,” he argued.

Business / Police Drag Customer To Court For Causing Nuisance Inside UBA Branch by JPhilip: 4:12pm On Aug 02, 2021
An applicant, Ikenna Nicholas, on Monday appeared in a Grade I Area Court, Nyanya, Abuja, for allegedly constituting public nuisance inside a bank.

The police charged Nicholas of Kuje, Abuja with two count of inciting disturbance and causing public nuisance.

The Prosecution Counsel, M.M Augustine of the Ministry of Justice told the court that the complainant said in May, the defendant walked into a banking hall of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) located at Utako and caused a scene by hitting on the office desk with his hands.

The prosecutor said the defendant shouted and disrupted banking activities.

The matter, Augustine said, was reported at Utako Police Station by the complainant, Shuaibu Onalo of UBA, Utako Branch, Abuja.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 114 and 183 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge, Yahaya Sheshi, granted the accused in the sum of N500,000 with a reliable surety in like sum.

Foreign Affairs / Republican Lawmakers March To Senate Floor To Protest Pelosi’s Mask Mandate by JPhilip: 1:16am On Jul 30, 2021
Dozens of House Republicans and their staffers marched maskless out of the House to the Senate floor in protest of the new mask mandate for the lower chamber.

The lawmakers and their staffers traveled across the Capitol on Thursday to protest the fact that Capitol Police have instructed officers to arrest staffers and visitors who don't wear masks and refuse to leave the House.

Prior to the migration, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, motioned to adjourn the House in protest against the mandate that Republicans have said came down from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Roy was joined by around 50 of his House colleagues, including Reps. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., Kat Cammack, R-Fla., and Byron Donalds, R-Fla.

"Congressman Roy said it succinctly on the House floor Wednesday: ‘We have a crisis at our border and we're playing footsie with mask mandates in the people's house,’" a Roy spokesperson told Fox News in an email.

"The fact that Speaker Pelosi is willing to have vaccinated staffers arrested for not complying with her mask mandate while the border remains wide open tells you all you need to know," they continued. "This isn't about science. It's about politics and control."

Cawthorn told Fox News in a Thursday statement that the Republicans who left the House chamber to protest the mask mandate "took a firm stance on individual liberty."

"Along with the majority of Americans, we rejected the totalitarian, hypocritical, and arbitrary ruling from Speaker Pelosi demanding masks be worn in the House," Cawthorn said. "My staff should never fear arrest because they practice individual responsibility."

The North Carolina congressman’s communications director, Micah Bock, told Fox News on Thursday that he was stopped by a Capitol Police officer and prevented from entering the Cannon House Office Building for not wearing a mask.

Bock said he was advised by the officer that he had to "wear a mask to go through security" and that what he did after he went through was his "own concern."

Republicans have taken aim at Pelosi for the mandate since the move by Capitol Police was announced on Thursday.

"The speaker of the House does not control the U.S. Capitol Police," Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill previously told Fox News. "We were unaware of the memo until it was reported in the press."

Capitol Police told Fox News in a Thursday email that "there is no reason it should ever come to someone being arrested."

"Anyone who does not follow the rules will be asked to wear a mask or leave the premises," Capitol Police said. "The Department’s requirement for officers to wear masks is for their health and safety."

A similar rule has been in place before. The Constitution gives members of Congress privilege from some arrests in the Capitol, such as in cases of unlawful entry. So far, there is no such mask mandate on the Senate side.

Washington, D.C. announced it will restart its indoor mask mandate on Saturday to reflect federal guidelines.

Celebrities / Women Living Off Men Shouldn’t Be Giving Motivational Speeches – Popular Actress by JPhilip: 11:21am On Jul 28, 2021
Popular actress, Georgina Onuoha says women that get their livelihood from dating men should not be giving motivational speeches to fellow women.

Onuoha stated this as she shared a photo of her graduation from Trident University, California, USA on her Instagram page.

In her caption for the photo, she wrote:

“Never hand over the pen that writes your story to anyone. Only you can write your autobiography.

“P.S: That most of us chose not to display our professional lives on social media doesn’t mean we are jobless. It simply means certain things should remain private as it should. Some of us sleep while our money work for us. Some of us have staffers doing the job and some of us just figured out how to work smart and live our lives jejely.”

She added: “If you are living off on a man’s hard earn money, I don’t appreciate you giving false narratives of how hard you work, let alone becoming a motivational speaker when in actual sense you don’t know how to multiple a dollar.

“So, please stop it. We know how you all end. Not all you display on social media is as it is. Take pride in eating the money you did not work for and give credit where it is due. Not every woman wants to be kept by a man, majority wants to add value to their partners’ lives.

“Until you put on those big girl pants, just crawl back into trophy and borrowed life and let hardworking people breathe and appreciate their self-made lives.”

Business / Dangote Refinery: Investment Or Bailout? By David Bako by JPhilip: 10:13am On Jul 17, 2021
It was hailed as the best thing to happen in the oil and gas sector especially in Nigeria – a serial importer of crude products. The year was 2013 and in September of that year, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, announced yet another of his gargantuan projects – the construction of the biggest single train refinery in the world with production expected to begin in 2016. Many delays and postponements later, the project has been bogged down by barely serviceable debts, poor planning, lack of centralized project management, mismanagement and has now become a huge albatross on Nigeria’s neck costing the country lots of FX and creating huge problems in return.

VALUATION

A project that started as a 9billion dollars project is now being valued at over 16billion dollars, albeit incorrectly. Sampling expert opinion from leading players in the oil & Gas industry, it is estimated that a refinery of that size should ideally cost within the range of 11 to 12billion dollars to build in Nigeria. Notwithstanding the conflicting figures, it was recently announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, will be taking a 20% stake in the uncompleted, non-functional Dangote Refinery at the cost of 3.8billion dollars. Whilst this baffled many, NNPC’s actions effectively over-valued the yet to be completed refinery to 19billion dollars.

PROJECT DELAYS OR PROJECT DELAY-ED.

As at last count, the completion of the refinery had been moved eight times. Whilst some might say this is in character for Dangote Industries and their numerous projects across different sectors, the problem is deeper rooted. A contractor at the delayed refinery project, speaking under the condition of anonymity said that poor planning, underpayment of contractors, and a lack of proper project management with over 40 contractors on site has led to most of the delays. He also added that of the 40, none is willing to commission as there is no clear delegation of duty and over-decentralization leading to absolute chaos.

Agriculture / Bitter Leaf Juice Effective In Preventing Fish Death In Farms – Expert by JPhilip: 8:06am On Jul 15, 2021
A fish farming expert, Mr Okon Amah, has urged local fish farmers to apply basic preventive measures, including using bitter leaf juice, to stop fish mortality in their ponds.

Amah made the call in Lagos on Wednesday.

“The basic step is that you need to change your water regularly and feed the fish regularly to prevent mortality because fish are cannibalistic in nature.

“Fish mortality can also be prevented by the addition of salt to the pond water, salinity in water helps prevent the death of fish.

“It can get messy when bacteria overruns your fish pond. Salt fights bacteria in fish water and without it, bacteria will spread and this will lead to the death of the fish in their numbers.

Crime / Jos Woman Jailed For Attempting To Give Jailed Boyfriend Hard Drugs by JPhilip: 6:42pm On Jul 09, 2021
A Federal High Court sitting in Jos has sentenced a 22-year-old woman, Celine Sele-Ezekiel, to five years imprisonment for unlawfully possessing and attempting to give her boyfriend some hard drugs in prison.

Sele-Ezekiel was arrested on May 10 by the personnel of Jos Correctional Centre personnel with 700g of Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana) and 43.2g of Diazepam tablet, wrapped in a container which she attempted to give her boyfriend, an inmate of the custodial centre.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that it was at point of arrest that the personnel of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were invited and the convict was handed over to them.

When the case came up before Justice Musa Kurya, the convict pleaded guilty to the offence.

The judge, who found Sele-Ezekiel guilty of the offence and sentenced her, described her action as “very strange” and “uncalled for.”
According to him, the sentencing the convict will serve as deterrent to others who may also be thinking of engaging in such a bad habit.

Earlier, the NDLEA Prosecution Counsel, Mr Uche Chukwu, told the court that for unlawfully possessing such hard drugs, Sele-Ezekiel had committed an offence contrary to Section 19 of NDLEA Act, CAP N30, Law of Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as amended).

“Since Sele-Ezekiel had pleaded guilty to the offence, she should be given summary trial,” Chukwu pleaded with the court.

He called a witness, Mr Ezekiel Yusuf, an NDLEA official, who testified and tendered the exhibits, including the convict’s statement and the substances.

The Defense Counsel, Dr Joshua Akubo, however, pleaded with the court to tamper Justice with mercy, saying that her client had no previous criminal record and that she was ‘young girl’.

Justice Kurya said that the sentence, which was without an option of fine, must commence from the day of her conviction.

Politics / Fashola: FG Will Complete 2nd Niger Bridge Next Year by JPhilip: 8:45am On Jun 20, 2021
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has reaffirmed that construction of the Second Niger Bridge would be completed next year.

The minister gave the assurance at a forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, to mark the sixth year anniversary of the present administration.

According to Fashola, the bridge, which will serve as a major link between South East and South West Nigeria will be delivered between the second and third quarters of 2022.

Records show that construction of the bridge commenced on Sept. 1, 2018, with construction cost put at N336 billion when the contract deal was signed.

The minister, however, made no mention if the construction cost of the facility had changed since the commencement of work.

He said that the project would facilitate influx of investments to the South East when completed.

Fashola said that the construction work had gone beyond the water level, explaining that most bridge works were done underwater.

“So, what you see currently is the final work. The sub-structure which entailed building cement structures underwater often costs a lot of money.

“We should finish the bridge next year between the second quarter and third quarter,’’ he affirmed, saying that construction time was lost because of COVID-19.

The bridge is 1.6km long and furnished with other ancillary infrastructure, including a 10.3km highway and an inter-change, expected to be completed next year.

The bridge spans from Asaba in Delta State to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State.

The existing Niger Bridge, linking Onitsha and Asaba was completed in December 1965.

It was built by the French construction giant, Dumez.

According to a lady who gave her name as Sandra, she heard about the man and had to come because she had acute pains in her chest and it seemed to have defiled all medical conditions.

Sandra said she had conducted the ‘mad doctor’ and already given a piece of paper containing what was wrong with her and she was going to see a traditional healer.

“He has shown me where to go and I am going there. I heard about him and have to come all the way from my village to try and see how it will go,” another patient Mr Aondohemen told the TV crew, saying he sees it as luck.

Also a worker of the man who prefered anonymity said, he had part of his head swollen up and had sought medical attention from all the hospitals without any help.

According to him, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom had given him money for treatment on several occasions but it didn’t heal until the day he met the mentally challenged man. He simply asked him to apply a certain herb and he was healed.

“Since then, I always come here every evening after my work to help him on guiding people,” he added.

A 30-year-old woman who works to support the mad man in attending to people recounted how people had thanked the man for helping them.

“They always come here. After being healed, they come to give him cash donations. Government officials, public servants, policemen and many other people,” She said.

Following the trend, a Facebook user took to his page on Friday to express shock over the activities of the healer-man.

According to him, “I’m a bit confused. I was told of a ‘mad’ native doctor who sits at the entrance of IBB Square Makurdi and prescribes native medicine for sick people within Makurdi town.

“I learnt of this man through one of my friends who asked me to accompany him and his sick brother to consult the man for a medical solution. I was surprised when I saw a lot of people hovering around a supposed “mad” man for medical help.

“A young woman within the age of 29 to 30 years appeared and presented herself to be working for the supposed “mad” man.

“Soon as we were about leaving, some group of persons came with gifts and money to give thanks to the man for healing their sick son.

‘I also met one of my old girlfriends standing close to the man and she also testified during our conversation that she had also received useful medical advice from the man.

“What the man does is that he will listen to you and consult his oracle and then directs you on where to get native medical attention or help.

“My friend who brought in a stroke patient walked towards the man to make inquiries and to my greatest surprise, he politely asked him to queue up that he will not attend to anyone no matter how highly placed except he queues up behind the other patients who were already waiting in line.

“The man was full of confidence and guts. He was seen sitting with beautiful girls between the ages of 22 to 24 and above.

“Stories making the rounds also have it that the man has his first and master’s degrees at the prestigious University of Jos. I’m still surprised and shocked to my bones.”

However, another beneficiary from Markurdi said God was working through the man to heal people of their various diseases.

Let me correct the impression of “Mr Denen,” herein referred to as “a mad man”.

“For Christians, God can appear to you in any form and you may not know. Generally, looking at this graduate of the Prestigious UniJos, you may easily conclude he’s a mentally unstable, but conversely, a mad man is easily identified by his behaviours and utterances, whereas, the case of this old man is different.

“Personally, I met him there since April 2020 but had several interactive forums with him just early this year. Let me correct a misrepresentation here, this old man herein referred to as “a madman” doesn’t collect money from clients. He collects gifts especially, food and snacks.

“Yes, beautiful girls may cluster around him in an ambiguous presentation herein as presented, their liberation is sure thereafter.

“In all, I wish to uphold the fact mentioned by people that he is curing them through the “instrumentality of God the creator” as he normally tells people. It wasn’t a poor or nasty outing with him anyways”, he stated.

Politics / Ignoring shoot-at-sight order, police arrest bandit with AK-47 in Kaduna by JPhilip: 2:57pm On Jun 19, 2021
Despite a presidential order to shoot any non-state actor wielding an AK-47 rifle, the Kaduna State Police Command says its operatives arrested a suspected bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle in the Kudaru forest of Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Mohammed Jalige disclosed the arrest in a statement on Saturday in Kaduna.

President Muhammadu Buhari had given the order on March 11, 2021, at the State House, Abuja, while meeting with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria co-chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

The president, who apprised the meeting with efforts by the government to improve the security situation in the country, said his administration has recorded appreciable successes in the North-East and South-South parts of the country.

‘‘But what surprises is what is happening now in the North West where the same people, with the same culture are killing each other, taking their livestock and burning properties.

‘‘As a result of that, we had a four-hour meeting of the National Security Council attended by the Ministers of Internal Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs, Service Chiefs, Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector-General of Police and others and we gave clear instructions.

‘‘One thing that got to the press which I read myself was that anyone with an AK-47 will be shot.

‘‘This is because AK-47 is supposed to be registered and it is only given to security officials.

‘‘We closed the borders for some years but the intelligence report I’m getting on a daily basis is that those who are conducting the abductions, the killings and so on are still not short of arms and ammunition,’’ he said.

President Buhari restated the order when he visited Lagos on June 10.

In his Saturday statement as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jalige said the operatives on June 18 at about 0745 hrs, while on routine patrol along Kudaru forest in Saminaka, Lere LGA of Kaduna state, intercepted a Volkswagen Golf vehicle, green in color with Reg.No.KAG 142 AA, heading towards Kaduna.

He explained that the operatives noticed the suspicious disposition of the occupants of the said vehicle and tried to flag them down but they immediately parked some distance away and took to their heels into the forest.

“The policemen, however, engaged them in a shootout and succeeded in apprehending one suspect and when the vehicle was searched, an AK47 rifle was found concealed in a bid to escape the eagle eyes of the security forces along the route.

According to him, the suspect is currently undergoing thorough investigation and is giving useful information to the police while concerted efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang to face the full wrath of the law.

Jalige said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Umar Muri, assured members of the public that the command would do everything possible to ensure that members of the gang were dislodged, and their operational weapons recovered.

He also charged officers and men of the command to be vigilant at all times to effectively police their areas of responsibilities.

Health / WHO Condemns Shisha, Says 146m Africans Die Yearly From Tobacco-related Diseases by JPhilip: 12:08pm On Jun 18, 2021
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the use of tobacco products other than cigarettes, such as vaporisers like shisha, was on the increase in Africa.

This is just as the world health body revealed that no fewer than 146 million Africans die annually from tobacco-related diseases.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa said these on Thursday during a virtual press conference.

Moeti said tobacco was the leading cause of preventable deaths in the world and emphasised that “smoking damages nearly every organ in the body”.

The director also said that “globally, exposure to secondhand smoke kills more than 1.2 million people yearly.”

Moeti said that quitting tobacco was the way to reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, stroke and other diseases, noting that it would also increase one’s life expectancy.

She added that “quitting tobacco is hard but today is a good day to start.

“Make the decision to live a life controlled by you and not tobacco.

“It may seem impossible, or like smoking isn’t a big deal. But what you don’t do today may end up causing future health problems or, worse, premature death,” Moeti said.

She said that one in five adolescents in Africa now used tobacco, saying “this must change. Quit smoking and be a part of the solution.”

Health / WHO: Suicide Claims More Lives Than HIV, Malaria, Breast Cancer Yearly by JPhilip: 8:15am On Jun 18, 2021
World Health Organisation (WHO) says one in every 100 dies by their own hand, noting that suicide remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

WHO, in its latest estimates, published on Thursday in “Suicide worldwide in 2019” revealed that every year, more people die as a result of suicide than HIV, malaria or breast cancer ̶ or war and homicide.

“In 2019, more than 700,000 people died by suicide: one in every 100 deaths, prompting WHO to produce new guidance to help countries improve suicide prevention and care.

“We cannot – and must not – ignore suicide,” said Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation, adding that,
“Each one is a tragedy.

“Our attention to suicide prevention is even more important now, after many months living with the COVID-19 pandemic, with many of the risk factors for suicide ̶ job loss, financial stress and social isolation – still very much present.

“The new guidance that WHO is releasing today provides a clear path for stepping up suicide prevention efforts,” he said.

The report stated that among young people aged 15-29, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death after road injury, tuberculosis and interpersonal violence.

“Rates vary, between countries, regions, and between males and females. More than twice as many males die due to suicide as females (12.6 per 100, 000 males compared with 5.4 per 100 000 females).

“Suicide rates among men are generally higher in high-income countries (16.5 per 100, 000); for females, the highest suicide rates are found in lower-middle-income countries (7.1 per 100, 000).

“Suicide rates in the WHO African (11.2 per 100, 000), European (10.5 per 100, 000) and South-East Asia (10.2 per 100, 000) regions were higher than the global average (9.0 per 100, 000) in 2019.

“The lowest suicide rate was in the Eastern Mediterranean region (6.4 per 100, 000),” it stated.

According to the report, globally the suicide rate is decreasing and in the Americas it is going up.

It stated that suicide rates fell in the 20 years between 2000 and 2019, with the global rate decreasing by 36 per cent, with decreases ranging from 17 per cent in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to 47 per cent in the European Region and 49 per cent in the Western Pacific.

“But in the Americas Region, rates increased by 17 per cent in the same time period.

“Although some countries have placed suicide prevention high on their agendas, too many countries remain uncommitted; currently only 38 countries are known to have a national suicide prevention strategy.

“A significant acceleration in the reduction of suicides is needed to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) target of a one-third reduction in the global suicide rate by 2030.

The UN health agency, therefore, expressed optimism that WHO’s new guidance on suicide would help the world reach the target of reducing the suicide rate by 1/3 by 2030.

“WHO’s guidance to suicide prevention, zeros in on four strategies: limiting access to the means of suicide; educating the media on responsible suicide reporting; fostering socio-emotional life skills in adolescents; and early identification, assessment, management and follow-up of those with suicidal thoughts and behaviour.

“The guidance highlights that in the social media age, media reports can prompt copycat suicides, especially when surrounding a celebrity.

“It calls for suicide coverage to be counteracted with articles highlighting successful recovery from mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts.

“It also recommends working with social media companies to increase awareness and remove harmful content,” it added.

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Declared Wanted, N100m Bounty Placed On Him by JPhilip: 7:16am On Jun 18, 2021
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday was declared wanted by a Northern group.

The group known as Northern Consensus Movement, NCM, declared Kanu wanted over the killings and destruction of properties owned by Northerners in the Southeast.

Addressing a press conference the President of the group, Dr Auwal Abdullahi, also placed a N100m bounty on Kanu.
He said Kanu should be captured and brought to them for onward handing over to security agents.

Abdullahi accused Kanu of using IPOB and the Eastern Security Network, ESN, to attack Northerners residing in the Southeast.

According to Abdullahi: “We are declaring Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB and ESN wanted for the killings, destructions of properties of Northerners residing and undertaking their lawful businesses in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria.

“We call on all countries of the world to respect our sovereignty as a nation. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, is the man and brain behind the killings and destruction of properties belonging to innocent northerners residing in South-Eastern Nigeria carrying out their legitimate businesses, using his proscribed terrorist organization, IPOB/ESN.”

The group urged the United States, US, and German governments to repatriate Kanu back to Nigeria.

“Northern Consensus Movement with these organizations has placed a bounty of N100 million as an offer to anyone who can produce Nnamdi Kanu alive, hale and hearty to us for onward delivery to security agencies for continuous prosecution,” he added.

Lately, Northerners have suffered some measure of attacks in the Southeast.

This is due to the killings carried out by suspected herders in the region.

Narrating the incident in Yoruba, the actress, whose name is also Princess, said on the day she met Baba Ijesha on location, she noticed that the actor couldn’t take his eyes off her.

She claimed that Baba Ijesha had beckoned on her to help him run an errand. When she agreed, she had followed him to his room where he allegedly tried to forcefully have sex with her.

She adds that if not for God’s grace on her, he would have succeeded in raping her. She says God gave her the strength to push the actor away and that’s how she escaped.

She says she still has a picture she took with Baba Ijesha on that day before he allegedly tried to rape her.

She added that Baba Ijesha has been doing this to others.

She said that when the Baba Ijesha scandal came to light, her relatives called her to ask if Baba Ijesha is capable of such and she told them, “Yes, he can do something like that.”

She asked people not to support Baba Ijesha because “he has been doing this rubbish for a long time.”

She said Baba Ijesha brought his current plight upon himself because of his lack of control around women.

Business / How Ex-MD, CFO Defrauded Bank PHB N25.7bn – Justice Okunnu by JPhilip: 8:26am On Jun 17, 2021
An Ikeja High Court on Wednesday night sentenced Francis Atuche, a former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank), to six years’ imprisonment for defrauding the bank of N25.7 billion.

In a 12-hour judgment, Justice Lateefa Okunnu also sentenced Ugo Anyanwu, a former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the bank to four years’ imprisonment.

The judge held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convicts committed the fraud.

Okunnu, however, discharged Atuche’s wife Elizabeth, who was facing trial alongside the duo.

Elizabeth was acquitted of counts of conspiracy and stealing brought against her.

Atuche and the others had been standing trial in the past 10 years.

The judgment began at 9:12a.m. and lasted until 9:21p.m.).

“The first defendant (Atuche) and the third defendant (Anyanwu) are found guilty of counts one to 11, 14 to 20, 23 and 24 of the charges contained in the information and are convicted of conspiracy and stealing.

“On counts 12, 13, 21, 22 and 26, I pronounce the first to third defendants not guilty as the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“On counts 25 and 27, the second defendant (Elizabeth) is found not guilty,” Okunnu said.

Sentencing the defendants, the judge said that Atuche abused his position of trust by stealing from the bank.

“By stealing from the bank, they stole from innocent customers of the bank.

“I hereby make an order of restitution against the first and third defendants to refund the sums stated in counts one to 11, 14 and 24.

“The sums are to paid to the relevant agencies that recovered the funds on behalf of the bank.

“The first defendant is hereby sentenced to six years’ imprisonment on counts one to 11, 14 to 20, 23 and 24,” Okunnu said.

“The third defendant is hereby sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on counts one to 11, 14 to 20, 23 and 24,” she held.

The judge, however, held that the sentences would run concurrently.

During the judgment, Okunnu said Atuche and Anyanwu defrauded Bank PHB of billions of naira using well-recognised stockbrokers to transfer money belonging to the bank under the guise of loans and shares.

“It was a well-planned, well-executed scheme but the bubble burst when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervened,” she said.

The judge held that neither Atuche of Anyanwu was convincing as ‘witnesses of truth’.

“The first defendant (Atuche) was diversionary and evasive on the witness stand; sometimes confrontational and rude.

“The third defendant (Anyanwu) was also combative and rude under cross-examination,” she said.

Okunnu noted that a large volume of documentary evidence was produced by parties in the case.

She said that documents such as bank records, e-mails and statements of key actors in the case played a key role in securing the conviction of the defendants.

Dismissing the charge of stealing against Elizabeth regarding two companies affiliated to her which were said to have fraudulently received two billion naira worth of Bank PHB shares, Okunnu held that there was no act of fraud or dishonesty overt or covert that had been linked to Elizabeth..

“Nothing was proved beyond reasonable doubt that she silently or knowingly endorsed the perpetuation of fraud; rather, it was the first defendant (Atuche).

“On account of this, the prosecution failed to prove its case of stealing against the second defendant (Elizabeth),” she said.

On the charge of conspiracy against Elizabeth, Okunnu held that there was no evidence that linked her to the shares bought for the two companies affiliated with here.

“I find that the case of conspiracy does not hold,” the judge said.

Elizabeth who was reciting prayers with a rosary during proceedings heaved a sigh of relief upon hearing the verdict.

NAN reports that the EFCC team led by Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), had in 2011, charged the trio with a 27-count charge of conspiracy and stealing of N25.7billion belonging to Bank PHB via fictitious loans and shares.

Atuche and his spouse were accused of fraudulent conversion of money described as bank loans.

The EFCC said that the couple diverted funds belonging to the bank by buying shares for fictitious companies linked to them.

Anyanwu was accused of using his position as the bank’s CFO to aid Atuche in committing the crimes.

The anti-graft agency said that the trio stole more than N25.7 billion belonging to defunct Bank PHB (now KeyStone Bank) between November 2007 and April 2008, while Atuche was the chief executive officer.

Following a stress test conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2009, Bank PHB was classified as distressed and Atuche removed as the Managing Director.

He was arraigned alongside his wife and Anyanwu for fraud.

A total of 31 witnesses testified during the trial for both the prosecution and defence.

Politics / “We The Leaders Have Provoked The Youth Of This Country” – Buhari’s Aide by JPhilip: 10:10pm On Jun 16, 2021
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Ita Enang, says Nigerian leaders have provoked the youths of the country to anger.

He said that the leaders have been busy giving their own children the best education and other privileges life have to offer at the detriment of the children of the masses.

According to Enang, the leaders’ failure to plan for the teeming youths will pose a grave danger to their own children.

The presidential aide stated this Wednesday in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.

He blamed the rising insecurity in the country on the state governors’ failure to let the youth have knowledge of the various programmes they are executing for their benefit.

The presidential aide further said that the state governments were complacent and paying lip service to education and welfare of their citizens.

Enang stated that the youths must be engaged to address the security challenges confronting the country.

“We the leaders and elders have provoked the youth of this country, we do not plan for them, and no government in this country can excuse itself from what is happing now.

“When we were busy educating our children in the best of schools, and when we were busy thinking of the welfare of our children, what did we do for them?

“The best love we can give to our children is to train the children of other people, who will live with our children otherwise, they will constitute danger to our children.

“And, our children will not have peace,” he said.

Enang, therefore, called on the state governments to take responsibility and stop pushing everything to the Federal Government as the security challenges were more at the local and the state levels.

He added that: “it is a burden which both states and Federal Government must shoulder”.

Politics / Court Remands Farmer For Shooting Herdsman Grazing On His Farm To Death by JPhilip: 1:29pm On Jun 16, 2021
An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a farmer, Segun Adebayo, who allegedly shot an 18-year-old herder to death be remanded in Oke-kura Correctional Centre.

The police charged Adebayo with culpable homicide.

Magistrate Ibrahim Dasuki, who gave the order, adjourned the case until June 22 for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Insp. Zacheaus Folorunsho told the court that the deceased’s brother, Muhammed Adamu reported the matter at the police station when his brother failed to return from tending to their cattle.

He said that Adebayo confessed at the police station that he shot the herder because he was grazing on his farm.

Folorunsho said that the defendant confessed further that he shot the 18-year-old to death and tried to conceal the corpse.

He prayed the court to remand the defendant on the basis that his offence was not ordinarily bailable.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Crime / SHOCKING: Cannibal Jailed For Killing, Eating Mum With His Dog by JPhilip: 7:10am On Jun 16, 2021
A Spanish waiter, Alberto Sanchez Gomez, has been jailed for more than 15 years after he strangled his mother, Maria Soledad Gomez, and ate her remains.

Alberto has been dubbed the cannibal killer of Ventas, the Madrid neighbourhood where the gruesome incident occurred.

He was arrested on February 21, 2019, and told police at the time that he ate his 68-year-old mother ‘bit by bit’ with his dog.

Detectives found his mother’s remains stored in plastic bags in a fridge and drawers around their family home.

Local reports stated that Alberto cut her remains into 1,000 small pieces, and detectives found her head, hands, and heart on her bed.

At a trial in Madrid’s Audiencia Provincial court in May, the 28-year-old was found guilty of homicide and desecration of a human corpse.

The prosecution had said that the convict used a carpenter’s saw and two kitchen knives to cut up his mother’s body.

Alberto, whose father died when he was 15, claimed in court he had heard ‘hidden messages’ when he watched TV and voices telling him: ‘Kill your mum.’

He said that the voices were those of neighbours, acquaintances and celebrities.

However, a jury of nine, including six women and three men, dismissed Alberto’s defence that he was experiencing a ‘psychotic episode’ when he killed his mother.

He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years and five months in prison.

Romance / Facebook Is Largest Online Recruitment Tool For Human Traffickers by JPhilip: 7:14am On Jun 12, 2021
New data shows Facebook is the largest online recruitment site in active U.S. sex trafficking cases. This week, Human Trafficking Institute CEO Victor Boutros said social media sites have become a dominant tool sex traffickers use to recruit victims for exploitation.

The group on Thursday published its sweeping 2020 Federal Human Trafficking Report, which found that sex trafficking and forced labour victims are rarely kidnapped by strangers off the street. Instead, the internet has become the most popular method for human traffickers to recruit victims – data shows that 30% of victims found to have been recruited in federal sex trafficking cases between 2000 and 2020 were on the internet.

And most victims were recruited on Facebook: 59% last year, to be exact. Snapchat, WeChat, and Facebook’s Instagram were also hotspots for recruitment.

“The internet has become the dominant tool that traffickers use to recruit victims, and they often recruit them on a number of very common social networking websites,” Human Trafficking Institute CEO Victor Boutros told CBSN Wednesday. “Facebook overwhelmingly is used by traffickers to recruit victims in active sex trafficking cases.”

A Facebook spokesperson told Insider: “Sex trafficking and child exploitation are abhorrent and we don’t allow them on Facebook. We have policies and technology to prevent these types of abuses and take down any content that violates our rules. We also work with safety groups, anti-trafficking organisations and other technology companies to address this and we report all apparent instances of child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.”

The report estimates that 53% of victims were identified as children, with an overwhelming majority being between the age of 14 and 17. Girls under the age of 18 are most likely to be victims in human trafficking prosecutions, according to the report, followed by women.

Active cases are defined as defendants who were charged in court. The findings were published on the 20th anniversary of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, which made human trafficking a federal crime in the US, the report says.

The issue of child exploitation online was touched upon during Facebook’s shareholder meeting in late May. Sarah Cooper, a member of the Survivors’ Council of ECPAT-USA, an anti-child trafficking organisation, requested that Facebook’s board prepare a report for investors on the risk of child exploitation on the platform.

“Facebook needs to immediately improve age verification, increase human monitoring of content, work in tighter cooperation with law enforcement,” Cooper said. “And it should absolutely delay any encryption on its platform until it can protect children.” She cited Facebook’s acknowledgment that implementing end-to-end encryption would make it more difficult to find child sex abuse material on the platform.

The proposal ultimately lost by a vote of about 980 million to 4.7 billion. The board opposed the move, citing the company’s work to detect and fight abusive behavior.

Facebook reported in February that more than 20 million child sexual abuse images were found on its platform and Instagram in 2020. Last year saw a rise in child sex abuse online, an increase in part attributed to Covid-19 lockdowns.

Politics / Remi Tinubu: Nigeria’s Democracy Often Failed To Meet Expectations by JPhilip: 4:16pm On Jun 11, 2021
Senator for Lagos Central, Oluremi Tinubu has said that democracy in Nigeria has often failed to live up to the expectations of the ordinary Nigerian.

Despite this, she said, Nigeria remains a diamond in the rough that has witnessed growth in various facets.

Tinubu stated this in a message to mark the 2021 Democracy Day.

The senator congratulated the government and citizens of Nigeria on the commemoration of the commencement of the fourth republic, and the longest chain of civilian rule in the country.

Tinubu said: “Twenty-two years ago, we made a choice – a conscious decision to be governed by democratic principles and to uphold the rights of every Nigerian.
“While it has not always been an easy journey and has often failed to meet the expectations of the ordinary Nigerian, there is no doubt that this administration is on the right track to creating the Nigeria we can all be proud of.

“I have seen a Nigeria that is a diamond in the rough – resource and culture-rich with vast human capital and huge potential for growth.

“We have survived a civil war, various military regimes, civil unrest etc, and emerged on the other side, still waxing strong.”

According to her, Nigeria has witnessed growth in various facets and has also been plagued by insecurity and voices speaking against its unity and peace.

“In spite of it all, we must continue to bring to the fore, the diversity and resilience that we are known for, defending her unity and upholding the honour and glory of Nigeria.

“A great nation is possible, and we must continue to keep the faith, believing in the future of our country and playing our part to protect the dignity, peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

“I congratulate you all, once again, and wish you a happy Democracy Day celebration,” Tinubu said.

Nigeria now marks its Democracy Day on June 12 annually instead of May 29.
