There are subtle signs that give away a mentally-unstable spouse-to-be, a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ms Chinyere Obasi, has said. The lawyer revealed the signs in a statement released to the media in Lagos on Saturday. She described domestic violence as being a direct antagonist of a sane society, with the major problem stemming from the family unit. Obasi, therefore, urged intending couples to ensure that they are familiar with the psychological make up of their prospective spouses, before marriage. “We have been inundated with endless stories of spouse brutalisation often leading to death, as well as stories of child and maid molestation and brutalisation. “Without prejudice to the other forms mentioned, brutalisation of the female spouse is mostly rampant in our society. “It is common knowledge that the family unit is the cradle of society, being the very foundation upon which the pillars of societal advancements are built. “Hence, there is a high tendency that a brutalised child or one who witnessed same on a parent, maid or sibling would naturally continue the cycle in his or her own home, thus, further destroying the society,” she said According to Obasi, recurring incidences of domestic violence in society, now calls for intending couples to look into the mental disposition of their proposed partners before marriage. “It may be cliché, but it remains very valid that intending couples should look very deep into the mental disposition of the person they intend to marry. “There are always signs of violence in a violent person, no matter how concealed. “It requires a high level of sensitivity to detect same; hence intending spouses should be deliberate in observing the tendencies of their spouses,” she said. According to her, it is also important to watch how an intending partner treats the people around them because even where they try to conceal same, it will naturally manifest in others. The U.S. has warned the United Nations that it has credible information about the possibility of serious human rights violations should Russia invade Ukraine. U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Bathsheba Crocker wrote to Michelle Bachelet, the UN high commissioner for human rights, outlining details of “disturbing information”. “We are deeply concerned about Russia’s continuing human rights abuses in the parts of Ukraine, it already occupies and have every reason to believe those concerns will multiply following a new military offensive,” Crocker said in the letter. The letter alleged that Russia is planning targeted killings, kidnappings, unjust detention and the use of torture targeting those who oppose Russian actions, including Russian and Belarusian dissidents in exile in Ukraine. “Specifically we have credible information that indicates Russian forces are creating lists of identified Ukranians to be killed or sent to camps following a military occupation,” she said. The U.S. also warned it believes Russian forces will use lethal measures to disperse peaceful protests or otherwise counter peaceful exercises of perceived resistance from civilians. The U.S. did not disclose its sources for the information. Russia has repeatedly denied plans to invade Ukrainian territory, despite the massing of around 150,000 troops along the country’s borders, according to Western intelligence. Justice Peter Kekemeke of an FCT High Court on Thursday sentenced two dismissed policemen to death for armed robbery. The convicts are James Ejeh and Simeon Abraham. They were arrianged on Oct. 20, 2017, by the FCT Commissioner of Police on two counts of conspiracy and armed robbery. Delivering judgment, Kekemeke held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts by calling four witnesses. Kekemeke held that the evidence before the court proved that the convicts committed robbery while armed. He added also held that there was admission of guilt by the convicts and no evidence was stronger than their own admission. “Left to me, I will say go and sin no more but it is about the law. “It is about the law and the society. The law has placed a duty on me to carry this out. “Countless citizens of this country cry out under the security agencies especially the police who run their guns bought with the taxpayers money against Nigerians extorting them with impunity. “Citizens have cried out on this dangerous trend of those people who are supposed to protect them turn against them. “It is therefore imperative to make this serve as a deterrant to others who have the same tendencies. “They deserve no pity therefore. In any case, I have no choice because the law tied my hands to the only sentence prescribed by law. “I hereby sentence the first and second defendants to death,” he held. He ordered that the exhibits recovered be returned to the federal government and the anti-terrorism unit where the defendants served. On Oct. 20, 2017, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Kufureabasi Ebong told the court that the convicts committed the offence. He said that the dismissed policemen dressed in their uniforms while armed and robbed Ms Christe Maker of her personal belongings. According to him, Maker and her driver were attacked on the Bill Clinton way while they were coming back from the airport at about 1a.m on Jan. 17, 2017. Some Nigerians have been complaining about improper activities of “loan sharks” who offer them unsolicited loan facilities only to start harassing them when there is delay in repayment. Findings reveal that these loan sharks are mostly fintech companies that offer loans at high rate returns, strict terms of collection upon failure, and generally operate outside the law. Some of the fintech companies involved in loan offerings include Sokoloan, Gocash, Getcash, Fastmoney, Cashlion, TrueNaira, LCredit and Lcash. They mostly charge high interest rate and service charge. They also give small amounts of money and short period of repayment, and most borrowers usually default in payment due to these conditions. According to one borrower, Isaac Aliu, some of these lenders take extreme and unacceptable steps to recover their money. “Imagine the situation where an agent is posting an imaginary obituary of a defaulter. That is an extreme action and should be met with heavy sanction. “I still wonder why they take these drastic actions without the knowledge of authorities like CBN. “Someone committed suicide recently because of this kind of embarrassment. It is better this loan apps get banned or subjected to strict regulation,” he said. Matthew Oba narrated how one of the companies defamed him, even after repayment of his loan. “I took a loan of N6000 from (one of the loan companies). They sent defamatory messages to all my contacts even after repayment have been made. “They are so quick in taking drastic actions by posting one’s pictures to contacts which was not part of the agreement. “They are worse than shylocks. They act polite when calling someone to take their loans only for them to become wild when it is time to pay back. “Their mode of operation is fraudulent because most times the interest they charge is more than the one in their agreements,” he said. Another borrower, speaking on condition of anonymity, bemoaned the death of his relative due to harassment by some of the loan sharks. “My brother committed suicide in January due to harassment. Another defamatory notification dropped on his phone by CreditAll, I wonder how many more. “They could have called the guarantor instead of all the contacts,” he said. According to Ayoade Babatunde, a Chartered Accountant, some of the fintechs offering such loans are usually in breach of certain regulations. “They breach the third-party protection policy, thereby taking laws into their hands without notifying the right authorities. “They engage in defamation of character, which is likened to cyber bullying and have led to mental disability, emotional trauma and even death in some cases. “They impose excessive interest rates, which have increased poverty levels of many of their victims, ” he said. Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State said in Gombe on Friday that political violence would not attract the right calibre of people into leadership positions but would scare them away. Masari made the observation when he led Jigawa’s Governor Badaru Abubakar to commiserate with Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State over the recent political clash in the state. He said they were in Gombe under the auspices of the Progressives Governors’ Forum chaired by Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State. Governor Bagudu, he explained, was engaged in Abuja and could not join in the visit. He said that politics was about leadership and service to the people and must be played without violence to attract the right leaders. He stressed that good people would always shun violence. The governor said also that politicians had the responsibility of promoting democracy and “we cannot promote democracy through violence; if we do, it will scare the good people away.’’ Masari said also that “leaders have a responsibility to protect lives and property. As leaders, we should not, under any circumstances, be seen to be promoting or supporting violence. “Violence will ultimately lead to death, cause injuries, loss of property and create charged atmosphere among the populace.’’ He stated that disagreements in politics should not resort to violence, noting that disagreements in politics were “natural and normal’’ just as they happen in family settings. “We believe we are peacemakers and politics can be played without violence. Violence does not help anybody and it does not promote peace,’’ he stressed. Masari urged politicians to conduct politics in a harmonious and understanding manner in the interest of peace and development. Some of these residents on Sunday said that they were staying at home every Monday because they can no longer count on security agencies to protect them, The Nation reports. Anambra State Coordinator, Transform Nigeria Movement TNM, Comrade Obi Ochije, said that IPOB’s activities had instilled fear in residents. He said the people were also disenchanted with the attitude of some of the policemen who, according to him, extort money from those they are supposed to protect. He said people prefer to stay alive in their homes than coming out to be killed by hoodlums. A worker in one of the ministries, who did not want to be named, said Police had failed the people. “We went to make a complaint to the police recently and they told us: ‘You people clap when IPOB kill our men’.” The police spokesman in Anambra, Ikenga Tochukwu, said people still had confidence in the police to protect them as they still receive calls for help. He said despite the attacks by some miscreants, the police would continue to protect lives and property. But, a senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said the police have failed the people. “If you want to know the truth, let me tell you. Our men have failed the people through the way they brazenly collect money from the residents. “People don’t respect the police and they talk to them nowadays anyhow they like. Motorists and traders don’t fear the police anymore because of extortion. “You hardly see any policeman in uniform anymore…everyone wants to be alive, including policemen because they are also humans. “But, one thing is clear, the masses listen more to IPOB nowadays than the police,” the officer said. Residents of Enugu State said they chose to stay at home on Mondays to avoid any trouble that may occur despite the assurances by the state police command. They said they did not have faith in the ability of the police to protect them should any trouble erupt. Rather, they said, the police would arrest innocent people and parade them as troublemakers. A resident, Kene Unogu, said: “This whole fear is heightened by security operatives. Most of them are always afraid of seeing people stay in clusters. “So, even policemen are happy that the people don’t come out on that day.” Another resident, Tony Aja said: “I stay away on Monday, not because of my loyalty to anyone, but my safety.” The spokesman of the Enugu state police command, Daniel Ndukwe, could not take his calls to respond to people’s concerns when our correspondent called his phone line. President General of Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), Goodluck Egwu Ibem, said residents do not count on security agencies to protect them because of their insincerity, corruption and rights abuses. “No right-thinking person will trust security agencies that kill the citizens they are paid to protect. Even if IPOB members come out on the streets to ask people to come out, residents will not still come. That is the true position presently,” he said A retired civil servant, Benjamine Nwosu, said so many people were arrested on trumped-up charges of been IPOB members. “You are not safe on a sit-at-home day if you are outside your home. People who even sit outside drinking end up being arrested by the police and they will be accused of one thing or the other,” Nwosu said. A lawyer and President of Igbo National Movement (INM), Anthony Okolo-Olisa, believes the people no longer accept federal authorities as legitimate and capable of protecting lives and property. The Imo Command spokesman, Michael Abattam, said the police would continue to do their job. “Our campaign is people should go about their lawful duties and should stop obeying illegalities because anything that is coming from bandits is illegitimate. So, somebody who doesn’t have authority, and you are listening to such people, it is absurd. “We have increased the number of policemen on the streets to forestall any unnecessary attack. We have increased our patrol. “We now have robust patrol teams within the state to make sure that people go about their lawful duties without fear of molestation. We want to make sure policemen are seen within every pole. “All these are measures to curtail whatever any miscreant who wants to take the law into his hands,” Abattam said. Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi has directed all civil and public servants to report to work on Monday despite the Sit-At-Home order issued by the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB had fixed Monday every week for its Sit-At-Home protest. Umahi gave the directive in a statement issued to reporters on Sunday by Dr Kenneth Igwe, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Coordinating Commissioner. According to him, whosoever failed to report to his duty post stands to lose his job. “Similarly, any shop or bank that failed to open for business on Monday stands the risk of losing the right to operate business or banking operations in the state. “The general public is by this announcement advised to go about their normal businesses without fear. “Security agencies have been directed to patrol 24 hours in all corners of the state. All concerned are to take note and adhere strictly to this government directive,” Umahi stated. President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that his administration is on top of events and is moving ahead with force to crush the perpetrators of the recent incidents of unrest in Plateau. The president gave the assurance in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, on Sunday in Abuja. Buhari, however, maintained that to achieve success, communities must unite against these horrific attacks, saying retributive violence was not the answer. He challenged religious, traditional and other community leaders on the need to preach peace and not to allow the use of their spaces for the propagation of violence and incitement to violence. According to him, the troubled communities on the Plateau are being reinforced with security personnel to protect lives and property in the state. The president said, “Attempts to simplify the reasons into a basic narrative may help raise donor-dollars for international NGOs, fill pages of overseas newspapers and burnish foreign politicians’ faith credentials; but this does not increase understanding, nor offer solutions. “If anything, simplistic theorising and finger-pointing make the situation worse. “It is important both for Nigerians and the international community to appreciate that there are a multitude of factors attendant to these troubles.” According to Buhari, there is the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorism, as well as the spate of kidnappings for ransom, transformed by some misinformed global media into a Muslim-on-Christian threat. “Yet, in reality there are no religious connotations at all when the primary purpose of these acts is to extract money. “Then the herder-farmer clashes. While international voices and some Nigerian politicians who seek personal gains from division declare this a matter of religion, for those involved, it is almost entirely a matter of access to water and land. “Herders have moved their cattle into contact with farmers for millennia. “But increasingly, due to population pressure, escalating aridity of northern states and climate change, they are forced to travel further south to find grazing lands,” he said. On the activities of IPOB, the president said: “Then, further afield in the South-East, IPOB are not struggling for freedom when they attack police stations and property, but rather committing acts of terrorism in order to steal money. “IPOB is not defending Christians, as their highly paid foreign lobbyists claim, when almost every citizen of those states they terrorize is uniformly Christian. “Yet mistakenly and because the lobbyists for IPOB have duped them, some misguided foreign media and politicians believe so. “As for Nigerians, what we need is to come together. And we must do this firstly and for the most part by our own hands, by casting asunder those who seek to divide us for their own nefarious financial and political gain.” Read more...https://www.herald.ng/buhari-vows-to-crush-perpetrators-of-unrest-in-plateau/ |
The Police Command in Plateau has described as fake speculations that unidentified persons have killed 230 Igbos in Jos. ASP Ubah Ogaba, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, dismissed the report in a statement on Sunday in Jos. The social media has been agog by reports that a luxurious bus conveying commuters of Igbo extraction was set ablaze, killing 230 passengers, in Jos. But Ogaba maintained that the report was malicious and attempt by mischief makers to stir up conflicts in the state and the country at large. The PPRO, therefore, called on members of the public to disregard the dangerous rumour or fake news and go about their lawful businesses. “The command hereby states categorically that there is no record of such incident anywhere in Jos. “We urge members of the public to disregard and stop the spread of such as fake news capable of inspiring unwarranted panic, hatred, negativity, chaos and tribal conflict among the well-spirited residents of Plateau and Nigeria in general. “We enjoin all citizens to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies by providing prompt and useful information that will help to enhance the security of the state rather than spreading unverified information capable of heating up the polity. “On this note, we wish to reaffirm our resolve toward the provision of adequate security within the state and even beyond,” he said. The spokesperson also urged residents to report all suspicious movements, emergency or distress to the nearest police formation for prompt response. Defendants to be forced to pay restitution to my company for my loss. I am 63 years old and semi-retired and placed my heart and soul into these four vessels only to be defrauded by a group of greedy CEOs. I even offered for Mr. Bida and others to settle with me out of respect for me placing the instrument that help lined their pockets. My Attorney at the time Mr. Patrick Etim offered a settlement to their Attorneys and they said they will fight this to the very end. Do I want to see anyone go to prison? No, but I do want restitution if that answers the question in a more direct way.
