Politics“We The Leaders Have Provoked The Youth Of This Country” – Buhari’s Aide by JPhilip(op): 10:10pm On Jun 16, 2021
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Ita Enang, says Nigerian leaders have provoked the youths of the country to anger.

He said that the leaders have been busy giving their own children the best education and other privileges life have to offer at the detriment of the children of the masses.

According to Enang, the leaders’ failure to plan for the teeming youths will pose a grave danger to their own children.

The presidential aide stated this Wednesday in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.

He blamed the rising insecurity in the country on the state governors’ failure to let the youth have knowledge of the various programmes they are executing for their benefit.

The presidential aide further said that the state governments were complacent and paying lip service to education and welfare of their citizens.

Enang stated that the youths must be engaged to address the security challenges confronting the country.

“We the leaders and elders have provoked the youth of this country, we do not plan for them, and no government in this country can excuse itself from what is happing now.

“When we were busy educating our children in the best of schools, and when we were busy thinking of the welfare of our children, what did we do for them?

“The best love we can give to our children is to train the children of other people, who will live with our children otherwise, they will constitute danger to our children.

“And, our children will not have peace,” he said.

Enang, therefore, called on the state governments to take responsibility and stop pushing everything to the Federal Government as the security challenges were more at the local and the state levels.

He added that: “it is a burden which both states and Federal Government must shoulder”.

PoliticsCourt Remands Farmer For Shooting Herdsman Grazing On His Farm To Death by JPhilip(op): 1:29pm On Jun 16, 2021
An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a farmer, Segun Adebayo, who allegedly shot an 18-year-old herder to death be remanded in Oke-kura Correctional Centre.

The police charged Adebayo with culpable homicide.

Magistrate Ibrahim Dasuki, who gave the order, adjourned the case until June 22 for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Insp. Zacheaus Folorunsho told the court that the deceased’s brother, Muhammed Adamu reported the matter at the police station when his brother failed to return from tending to their cattle.

He said that Adebayo confessed at the police station that he shot the herder because he was grazing on his farm.

Folorunsho said that the defendant confessed further that he shot the 18-year-old to death and tried to conceal the corpse.

He prayed the court to remand the defendant on the basis that his offence was not ordinarily bailable.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

CrimeSHOCKING: Cannibal Jailed For Killing, Eating Mum With His Dog by JPhilip(op): 7:10am On Jun 16, 2021
A Spanish waiter, Alberto Sanchez Gomez, has been jailed for more than 15 years after he strangled his mother, Maria Soledad Gomez, and ate her remains.

Alberto has been dubbed the cannibal killer of Ventas, the Madrid neighbourhood where the gruesome incident occurred.

He was arrested on February 21, 2019, and told police at the time that he ate his 68-year-old mother ‘bit by bit’ with his dog.

Detectives found his mother’s remains stored in plastic bags in a fridge and drawers around their family home.

Local reports stated that Alberto cut her remains into 1,000 small pieces, and detectives found her head, hands, and heart on her bed.

At a trial in Madrid’s Audiencia Provincial court in May, the 28-year-old was found guilty of homicide and desecration of a human corpse.

The prosecution had said that the convict used a carpenter’s saw and two kitchen knives to cut up his mother’s body.

Alberto, whose father died when he was 15, claimed in court he had heard ‘hidden messages’ when he watched TV and voices telling him: ‘Kill your mum.’

He said that the voices were those of neighbours, acquaintances and celebrities.

However, a jury of nine, including six women and three men, dismissed Alberto’s defence that he was experiencing a ‘psychotic episode’ when he killed his mother.

He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years and five months in prison.

RomanceFacebook Is Largest Online Recruitment Tool For Human Traffickers by JPhilip(op): 7:14am On Jun 12, 2021
New data shows Facebook is the largest online recruitment site in active U.S. sex trafficking cases. This week, Human Trafficking Institute CEO Victor Boutros said social media sites have become a dominant tool sex traffickers use to recruit victims for exploitation.

The group on Thursday published its sweeping 2020 Federal Human Trafficking Report, which found that sex trafficking and forced labour victims are rarely kidnapped by strangers off the street. Instead, the internet has become the most popular method for human traffickers to recruit victims – data shows that 30% of victims found to have been recruited in federal sex trafficking cases between 2000 and 2020 were on the internet.

And most victims were recruited on Facebook: 59% last year, to be exact. Snapchat, WeChat, and Facebook’s Instagram were also hotspots for recruitment.

“The internet has become the dominant tool that traffickers use to recruit victims, and they often recruit them on a number of very common social networking websites,” Human Trafficking Institute CEO Victor Boutros told CBSN Wednesday. “Facebook overwhelmingly is used by traffickers to recruit victims in active sex trafficking cases.”

A Facebook spokesperson told Insider: “Sex trafficking and child exploitation are abhorrent and we don’t allow them on Facebook. We have policies and technology to prevent these types of abuses and take down any content that violates our rules. We also work with safety groups, anti-trafficking organisations and other technology companies to address this and we report all apparent instances of child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.”

The report estimates that 53% of victims were identified as children, with an overwhelming majority being between the age of 14 and 17. Girls under the age of 18 are most likely to be victims in human trafficking prosecutions, according to the report, followed by women.

Active cases are defined as defendants who were charged in court. The findings were published on the 20th anniversary of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, which made human trafficking a federal crime in the US, the report says.

The issue of child exploitation online was touched upon during Facebook’s shareholder meeting in late May. Sarah Cooper, a member of the Survivors’ Council of ECPAT-USA, an anti-child trafficking organisation, requested that Facebook’s board prepare a report for investors on the risk of child exploitation on the platform.

“Facebook needs to immediately improve age verification, increase human monitoring of content, work in tighter cooperation with law enforcement,” Cooper said. “And it should absolutely delay any encryption on its platform until it can protect children.” She cited Facebook’s acknowledgment that implementing end-to-end encryption would make it more difficult to find child sex abuse material on the platform.

The proposal ultimately lost by a vote of about 980 million to 4.7 billion. The board opposed the move, citing the company’s work to detect and fight abusive behavior.

Facebook reported in February that more than 20 million child sexual abuse images were found on its platform and Instagram in 2020. Last year saw a rise in child sex abuse online, an increase in part attributed to Covid-19 lockdowns.

PoliticsRemi Tinubu: Nigeria’s Democracy Often Failed To Meet Expectations by JPhilip(op): 4:16pm On Jun 11, 2021
Senator for Lagos Central, Oluremi Tinubu has said that democracy in Nigeria has often failed to live up to the expectations of the ordinary Nigerian.

Despite this, she said, Nigeria remains a diamond in the rough that has witnessed growth in various facets.

Tinubu stated this in a message to mark the 2021 Democracy Day.

The senator congratulated the government and citizens of Nigeria on the commemoration of the commencement of the fourth republic, and the longest chain of civilian rule in the country.

Tinubu said: “Twenty-two years ago, we made a choice – a conscious decision to be governed by democratic principles and to uphold the rights of every Nigerian.
“While it has not always been an easy journey and has often failed to meet the expectations of the ordinary Nigerian, there is no doubt that this administration is on the right track to creating the Nigeria we can all be proud of.

“I have seen a Nigeria that is a diamond in the rough – resource and culture-rich with vast human capital and huge potential for growth.

“We have survived a civil war, various military regimes, civil unrest etc, and emerged on the other side, still waxing strong.”

According to her, Nigeria has witnessed growth in various facets and has also been plagued by insecurity and voices speaking against its unity and peace.

“In spite of it all, we must continue to bring to the fore, the diversity and resilience that we are known for, defending her unity and upholding the honour and glory of Nigeria.

“A great nation is possible, and we must continue to keep the faith, believing in the future of our country and playing our part to protect the dignity, peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

“I congratulate you all, once again, and wish you a happy Democracy Day celebration,” Tinubu said.

Nigeria now marks its Democracy Day on June 12 annually instead of May 29.

He said the baby girl was brought out of the well dead.

PoliticsAdesina: "Some Nigerians Rejoice When Negative Things Happen To Their Country" by JPhilip(op): 5:58am On Jun 11, 2021
I felt like embracing Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, a couple of weeks back when he left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Was that because I work with a President elected on the platform of the APC? Not necessarily so. Yes, I’ve never really liked the PDP because I felt there was too much of buccaneering in the party, but I’d always been honest enough to give some governors in the fold of the party who were doing well their dues. I always mentioned Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State (he was still in PDP then), Danjuma Goje of Gombe State, and some others. They stood out for the good works in their states.

When the APC came and made Muhammadu Buhari its presidential candidate in 2014, I gladly threw in my lot with the party, not as a registered member though. Whither Buhari goest, I go.

Ayade’s crossing over to APC was very good for the party. The more governors, the merrier, and the brighter your chances of retaining power at the centre. We will come back to that, but first, my reason for being happy with Ayade, to the point of considering a warm embrace.

Hear the Governor when he gave reasons for crossing the carpet: “Having seen and known the President and his commitment to this country, his nationalistic disposition and all the efforts he has made to bring Nigeria to where we are today, it is obvious that at this point, we needed to join hands with him to build a Nigeria that we can be proud of.

“We need all governors to recognize that it is not the party that matters, it is character, honour, commitment to the vision of this great nation.”

This resonates deeply with me. For if there is one thing lacking in our country, it is love for nation. Some Nigerians actually rejoice when negative things happen to their own country. They rejoice at iniquity, at evil, and they think somebody is being done in, not knowing that the land is the ultimate loser. They swallow poison, and think it would kill their neighbors. Pity!

Also lacking in our blessed but blighted country are virtues like character, honour, commitment, selflessness, transparency, which President Buhari has a-plenty, and which Gov Ayade has seen, and which brought him into the APC. That is the reason for the intended embrace. Cross River State has always been PDP, and may still be largely so, but Ayade did not mind. He was actuated by enough love for country to know that his former party was not the way to go any longer, not minding the personal consequences.

Now, listen to this one that bowled me over completely. The Governor came to see the President, and spoke to journalists covering State House. He told them: “What do I stand to gain? If police stations are attacked, policemen are killed, soldiers are killed, there is kidnapping everywhere, it makes the ruling party unpopular, and that is good for me. My party is likely to win. But that is what I want to depart from. The cumulative impact of that is you are celebrating while your country is undergoing a bloodbath. And the cascading effect is that your country is becoming ungovernable over a period of time.

“So, why don’t we join hands with a party that says we are open, rather than being at war with each other?”

That is the crux of my admiration for Ayade. His decamping is not strictly about himself, but about our country. Love for fatherland. That is food for thought. Something we need to ponder about, and check ourselves in the mirror. Michael Jackson sang about the man in the mirror. “I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways.”

Yes, Nigerians are the men in the mirror. We must change our ways. You rejoice when Boko Haram kills our troops. You are the man in the mirror. You exult when bandits carry away students into captivity. You are the man in the mirror. You dance when bombs and explosives go off, killing innocent souls. You are the man in the mirror. When economic indices are released, and things are looking down, you trumpet it from the rooftops. But when the economy makes gains, you pretend not to know. You are the man in the mirror. It’s time to learn from Ayade . It’s time to change your ways, and think Nigeria first. That is the lesson of the decampment, even when it is at great personal cost.

But if we can do some political permutations (which is allowed) Gov Ayade has given APC a shot in the arm, the very same thing Gov Dave Umahi of Ebonyi did some months back. APC started this dispensation with about 24 governors, while PDP had 12. All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had one, which it still does today. Due to schisms and internal wranglings, APC dwindled to 19 governors. They were lost to PDP, which began to make strong showings. And then, Umahi came. Ayade came. Before you knew it, APC was back to 21 governors. The winner takes it all, the loser standing small.

By the nature of our politics, the more states you control, the easier it is for you to win the Presidency. APC has 21, and still counting. Some things are sure to happen in the months ahead. APC’s gain will be PDP’s loss.

What APC lost in the South-South by being ousted in Edo and Bayelsa states, it has now got by having Cross River in the kitty. Things are looking up. Politics is still a game of numbers.

Beyond politics, however, I think we should garland Governor Ayade. He has made a move in which he was not thinking of just himself, but of the good of the country. He deserves our praises, and our emulation. If only we think of the good of our country first, we would then change our ways.

I’m closing with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways.

Crime(VIDEO): Man Buys $20K Gold Chain From $30K Lottery Win; Chain Gets Snatched by JPhilip(op): 8:15pm On Jun 10, 2021

PoliticsInsecurity: El-Rufai Reveals Why States Must Co-Operate by JPhilip(op): 6:37pm On Jun 10, 2021
Gov. Nasir El-Rufai has said that tackling insecurity requires the cooperation of all states and for security managers as well as intelligence agencies to share information.

The governor gave the advice during the 2021 second quarter meeting of Directors of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) in North West states, on Thursday in Kaduna.

“Any plan that seeks to address the problem in only one state will at best yield a temporary respite as the criminals will retreat to safe havens.

‘’The security agencies need to strengthen intelligence gathering, to establish not just the identities, plans and locations of these criminals, but to actively disrupt their capacity to organise and mount attacks on our citizens.

‘’But it is also very important to ensure that prompt and coordinated action becomes the default response of the Armed Forces and the Police to the profusion of actionable intelligence that is already available,’’ he added.

El-Rufai said that the governors of the North West and Niger state appreciated the salient fact of inter-state cooperation as far back as 2015.

‘’They came together to fund simultaneous operations by the federal military and security agencies across the largely ungoverned Kamuku-Kuyambana forest swathes that straddle about seven of our states up to Dajin Rugu.

‘’These operations disrupted the cattle rustling gangs, but were unfortunately not sustained as a continuous exercise to dominate these spaces and assert within them the authority of the Nigerian state,’’ he recalled.

According to the governor, the criminal gangs have become more daring and dangerous since recovering from their near defeat in 2015.

‘’As the lead agency for domestic intelligence and counter-intelligence, the DSS has a vital role to play in providing the reliable information needed by the Police and Armed Forces for the total defeat of these dangerous insurgents,’’ he added.

El Rufai warned of looming food crisis in the country, because ‘’ farmers in various communities are unable to go to their farms, that is when they are lucky not to have fled their remote villages under pressure from the criminals.’’

Earlier, the DSS Director in Kaduna State, Mr Idris Ahmed-Koya, commended Kaduna State Government for its support to the command.

‘’The current efforts by the state government to establish a drone centre for intelligence gathering and support of other security operations is highly commendable.’’

According to him, the centre will be a game changer in tackling insecurity not only in Kaduna state but the North-west and even North-central zones when it becomes operational.

‘’Similarly, all our successful operations are made possible and easy through the requisite working tools provided by the State Government. The IMSI Grabber is one of such tools,’’ he disclosed.

Ahmed-Koya, however, appealed to the governor to provide the command with operational vehicles to help in carrying out operations.

HealthCOVID-19: Wuhan Lab Leak Hypothesis “flawed” – WHO Investigator by JPhilip(op): 11:58am On Jun 10, 2021
A “lab-leak hypothesis” about the origin of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is flawed, said Dominic Dwyer, a professor at the University of Sydney, in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The key flaw, he said, is that no evidence shows that the Wuhan Institute of Virology had SARS-CoV-2 before the pandemic.

“The laboratory leak, for that to be the origin … meant they must have had the virus to begin with, and we don’t have evidence of that,” said Dwyer, who was also a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) team sent to China in January.

As a “pretty prominent research institute” working on coronaviruses, the Wuhan Institute of Virology had no reason to hide anything if they did have the virus, said Dwyer.

China appeared open and cooperative with the investigation into COVID-19’s origin, he said.

“All the locations we asked about visiting, they let us visit. I think they were pretty open.”

The WHO team’s report concluded that a virus jumping from one animal species to another and then to humans was the most likely cause of COVID-19, and deemed a lab leak “extremely unlikely,” according to Dwyer.

BusinessEl Salvador Becomes 1st Country To Formally Adopt Cryptocurrency As Legal Tender by JPhilip(op): 4:13pm On Jun 09, 2021
El Salvador has become the first country in the world to formally adopt cryptocurrency after its Congress voted overwhelmingly to approve a law classifying Bitcoin as legal tender.

President Nayib Bukele on Wednesday said that this is an initiative he hopes will boost foreign investment, improve financial inclusion and generate jobs, after the congress approved his proposal to embrace the cryptocurrency.

With 62 out of 84 possible votes, lawmakers voted in favor of the move to create a law to adopt bitcoin, despite concern about the potential impact on El Salvador’s program with the International Monetary Fund.

Bukele has touted the use of bitcoin for its potential to help Salvadorans living abroad to send remittances back home, while saying the U.S. dollar will also continue as legal tender.

“It will bring financial inclusion, investment, tourism, innovation and economic development for our country,” Bukele said in a tweet shortly before the vote in Congress, which is controlled by his party and allies.

The use of bitcoin will be optional for individuals and would not bring risks to users, Bukele said. The government will guarantee convertibility to dollars at the time of transaction through a trust created at the country’s development bank BANDESAL.

Its use as legal tender will go into law in 90 days, with the bitcoin-dollar exchange rate set by the market.

Under the law, bitcoin must be accepted by firms when offered as payment for goods and services. Tax contributions can also be paid in bitcoin.

Analysts have said the move could complicate talks with the IMF, where El Salvador seeks a more than $1 billion program.

Bitcoin was little changed, last up 2% at $34,067, away from Tuesday’s near three-week low.

“The market will now be focused on adoption through El Salvador and whether other nations follow,” said Richard Galvin of crypto fund Digital Asset Capital Management. “This could be a key catalyst for bitcoin over the next two to three years.”

El Salvador’s dollarized economy relies heavily on money sent back from workers abroad. World Bank data showed remittances to the country made up nearly $6 billion or around a fifth of GDP in 2019, one of the highest ratios in the world.

It was not immediately clear what proportion of remittances sent to El Salvador are in the form of bitcoin.

The cryptocurrency offers, in theory, a quick and cheap way to send money across borders without relying on remittance firms typically used for such transactions.

Bukele says some 70% of people in El Salvador lack access to traditional financial services.

Still, the cryptocurrency’s use for remittances globally is patchy. Converting local currencies to and from bitcoin often relies on informal brokers. Prices are volatile, and buying and selling is a complex process that demands technical knowledge.

El Salvador will “promote the necessary training and mechanisms so that the population can access bitcoin transactions,” according to the law.

RomanceIslam Doesn’t Support Early Marriage That Exposes Bride To Danger – NASFAT by JPhilip(op): 6:25am On Jun 09, 2021
The Chief Imam of the Nasrul-lahi-li Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), Abdul Azeez Onike, says that Islam does not support any underage marriage which exposes the wife to dangers.

Onike, who doubles as NASFAT Chief Missioner, made the remark in Lagos at a press conference and campaign to halt violence against women and girls in the country.

The campaign, entitled ‘Ending Violence Against Women and Girls,’ was organised by NASFAT with support from UNICEF under EU-UN Spotlight.

Onike said that what matters in marriage was if the persons involved could handle the responsibility of the union.

According to him, the scripture is clear about marriage instead of using contemporary standards to determine it.

“Self-evident truth is what the scripture says in this regard. If medically a child, because of age, is exposed to sexually transmitted infections, death at childbirth, such marriage is unjust.

“As a person, you must be seen to be promoting mercy and any form of violence against women and girls, God frowns at it.

“The women around us should be cherished and protected in all that we do as a people for without them humanity is threatened,” he said.

He noted that Islam is a religion of peace and must be seen to be promoting that in all ramifications.

Onike charged the campaigners to work hard to ensure that the menace of violence against women and the girl child was eliminated in the society.

The Lead Project Officer for NASFAT-UNICEF-EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, Alhaja Ganiyat Babalola, who declared open the campaign, said that violence against women and the girl child was the responsibility of all to stop.

Babalola described the high rate of domestic violence against women in the society as alarming.

She said that keeping quiet when such violence as rape, battering, discrimination against a widow and others were committed was not ideal.

“By speaking out, help will definitely come and through such the menace will fizzle out.

“As an organisation, we are working in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the Nigeria Police and others to ensure that culprits contended with the law of the land.

“Although, there are challenges in prosecuting offenders as some victims are under family and societal pressure not to come up with information that will nail persons charged,” she said.

“That doesn’t give you the right to call me a cock, and this is a message to all the people out there using that hateful language.

“Why don’t you try going a day in my shoes…where you are with somebody you love very much and you want them to be able to express themselves physically and spiritually in a way that perhaps they can’t do with just you?

“Personally, I would never sleep with another woman; I love my girlfriend very much but I know that her needs require her to have the right to explore that territory and if it means I have to sleep on the sofa few days a week, then so be it.

“Ultimately, our relationship means more to me than my ego or my jealousy.

“So think about what you’re saying when you use that word.”

HealthWhy It’s Dangerous To Start Having Sex Before 16 by JPhilip(op): 6:24am On Jun 05, 2021
The National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC) in Ebonyi has said that early girl child marriage and exposure to sexual intercourse before age 16, is a predisposing factor to cervical cancer.

The Medical Director of NOFIC, Prof. Johnson Obuna, made the remark on Friday, during the flag-off of a Free Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment for women in the state.

The exercise was organised by the state government through the state Executive Committee on Medical Screening in collaboration with the office of the governor’s wife, Mrs Rachael Umahi.

Obuna said that giving out a girl child to marriage before 16 years of age made them prone to cancer.

The medical expert said that multiple sexual partners also exposed women to health condition.

He advocated for the inclusion of sex education in primary and secondary schools curriculum to reduce the risk factors.

The medical director said that the condition could be detected, prevented and stopped if reported at its early stage.

According to him, cervical cancer could also be treated if identified at the early stage unlike the ovarian cancer.

“Apart from early screening, another preventable measure is by not allowing our girl child to marry early.

“Early marriage and exposure to sexual intercourse before age 16 is a predisposing factor for cervical cancer,” he said.

Obuna commended Gov. David Umahi for his commitment to the health status of people in the state.

Mrs Umahi, represented by her Special Assistant on Welfare, Mrs Patience Offor, said an estimate of over 100, 000 new cases of cervical cancer was recorded every year in the country.

She pleaded with relevant bodies in the field of Oncology to offer effective services, and free outreaches to rural dwellers.

Umahi said that her pet project, ‘Family Succor and Upliftment Foundation’ had been in partnership with Joyce Jones Foundation on free cervical cancer screening and treatment.

The governor’s wife called on women and girls to avail themselves of the opportunity of free cervical cancer screening and treatment.

She urged local government chairpersons, coordinators of development centres and other stakeholders to mobilize women and bring them for the programme to achieve maximum result.

The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Eze Nwachukwu, said that the body was saddled with the responsibility of sensitisation and mobilisation of people to benefit from the gesture which was free.

Nwachukwu said that the exercise would be replicated at the local government levels.

He thanked the governor for the first phase of the free screening of Hepatitis B and C, stating that vaccination of those screened would commence on June 7.

Nwachukwu called on women of the state to take advantage of the exercise.

RomanceTransgender Man Who Gave Birth To 2 Kids Narrates Traumatic Pregnancy Experience by JPhilip(op): 12:04pm On Jun 04, 2021
American transgender man, Kayden Coleman, who already has two kids, has narrated his traumatic pregnancy experiences.

Coleman, 34, who has a seven-year-old named Azaelia and a 10-month old named Jurnee, spoke on the Today show.

The Houston, Texas-based educator stated that he missed out on the “perks” of pregnancy because no one held the door for him, fussed over his growing belly or made him feel special in the way that pregnant women are sometimes treated.

However, he said that he didn’t live in fear of suffering violence because people “thought I had a beer belly”.

An advocate, Coleman is one of several individuals educating the public and the medical community on what it is like for transgender people to navigate pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum experience.

Coleman described both his pregnancies as “very tumultuous”, explaining that “most of that came from inside the birthing world, with medical professionals. There was a lot of questioning about my identity, a lot of misgendering. Being told I shouldn’t be in spaces I was seeking care from because they were considered women’s spaces. I was offered an abortion a ridiculous amount of times.”

Coleman began transitioning from female to male in 2009, but has not had genital construction surgery, and has kept his female reproductive organs.

In March 2013, he had a mastectomy to remove his breasts and stopped temporarily taking testosterone.

He said he discovered he was pregnant five months after taking in and gave birth to his first daughter in 2014.

Coleman said he was again taken by surprise when he became pregnant for the second time in January 2020.

BusinessThe Curious Case Of First Bank by JPhilip(op): 5:31pm On May 02, 2021
First Bank has for the longest time been the most trusted and recognizable name in the Nigerian banking landscape. This was borne out of the fact that it was the first bank to be established in Nigeria initially called British Bank of West Africa (BBWA) under royal charter.

As the oldest bank in the country for over 120 years, it had certain advantages many other banks do not have. Some of those include a loyal customer base and deep networks across both the public and private sectors. Just to prove the strength of the bank’s connections, since the return of democracy in 1999, 2 of the 4 Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governors have been former Managing Directors of the bank. Other directors have ended up being appointed either Ministers or other significant political appointments.

The case of the last week with the ouster of the MD, Dr. Sola Adeduntan by the Oba Otudeko-led board is akin to what might be termed a coup as it was not sanctioned by the regulator. The CBN performed its duty by rightly rescinding the action of appointing the Deputy MD, Mr Gbenga Shobo and sacking the entire Board at both the Holdings and Bank level. The action by the Otudeko board was in breach of laid down procedures where to appoint or sack a bank director, it must be approved by the CBN. It is common knowledge that even from the Assistant General Manager level in the banking industry requires CBN approval, so this case of appointments is highly unusual.

The question many have asked is how did First Bank get here? And it just takes going back barely two decades. In 2001, the former MD, Mr Bernard Longe alongside the Board approved a loan of $112m to Investors International of London (IILL) to purchase a GSM licence. The bid went South, IILL was unable to perform on its loans and Bernard Longe was to be made out as a scapegoat by the Board and was sacked. He took the bank to court, won and received a compensation.

The drama of Otudeko owing the bank and allegedly abusing his position is no different. It stems from the heady days of Mr Bisi Onasanya who oversaw the expansion of a Non Performing Loan (NPL) book like never seen in the history of the Nigerian banking industry. According to some estimates, the total NPLs under his watch is about 1.3 trillion naira. Many of the loans were originated deliberately to go bad with some members of the Board benefiting directly. Otudeko was one of those with a loan portfolio of what is estimated to be 75 billion naira. The collateral behind these loans are said to be Honeywell shares and Airtel shares owned by Otudeko. However, despite regulatory forbearance, Otudeko refused to pay up on these loans despite being the Chairman of the bank. The culture of bad loan writing seems embedded in the DNA of the bank.

It is very worrisome that board members who are also majority shareholders and should be acting in the best interests of minority shareholders only view the bank as an avenue to funnel resources to their other businesses without paying up. There are those who say the bank is a political party masquerading as a bank divided along factions swaying to what faction of the party is in power. There are suggestions that Mike Adenuga (another major shareholder) is the backer of the current MD, Dr. Sola Adeduntan and has rebuffed attempts by Otudeko to avoid meeting his loan obligations.

But what is even most curious is the blatant disregard that Otudeko seemingly has for the CBN Governor. In his speech announcing the re-appointment of Dr. Sola Adeduntan, Godwin Emefiele said, “I spoke to Mr. Oba Otudeko , he refused to grant my entreaties. I had to call two of his major shareholders to call him to ask the board not to take such decisions without the approval of the CBN. He refused to pick the calls of these shareholders — who are also owners of the bank. I feel we have done our best and we would not allow a shareholder who cannot subject himself to regulatory control and authority to remain as the director of a bank.”

While we must commend the boldness of the CBN to take this step now, we must also ask why it took this long to sack Otudeko as Chairman of the bank. In a bank that has been a recipient of liquidity support and regulatory forbearance, directors cannot operate as they choose. Had Otudeko not gone ahead with his coup, would he still be Chairman? How many more banks are their Non Perfoming Loans understated? How fragile is the entire banking system? These are the questions that demand answers and go beyond just the curious case of Otudeko and First Bank of Nigeria.

BusinessGtbank’s Q1 2021 Earnings Struggles by JPhilip(op): 3:50pm On Apr 26, 2021
GTBank released its Q1 2021 numbers earlier this week showing a 9% decline in Profit After Tax.

This decline is a result of the lower yield environment where yields on government securities trended to single digits in the final quarter of 2020 and first quarter of 2021.

For GTBank, its interest income declined from 75 billion naira to 55 billion naira due to reduced trading income on its investment securities. This is an unexpected dip in securities trading for the bank.

While other Tier 1 banks such as UBA suffered a decline of 12% in investment securities income, GTBank’s decline more than doubled at 27% (17 billion naira). This is quite a worrying trend and with a challenged economy, it’s time to re-evaluate GTBank as an investment proposition.

The bank operates a curious model in the industry where the Executive Director for Wholesale Banking also acts as the Treasurer. These are typically two distinct roles with the Treasurer reporting into the Executive Director, but it appears GTBank management is unwilling to either pay market rates for a Treasurer or release the reigns from the long-time Treasurer who is also the Executive Director. It begs the question as to whether not being fully focused on the Treasury function might be driving this sub-optimal performance.

The bank continues to rein in its costs and best-in-class in Cost-Income Ratio (CIR) metrics. However, without generating growth in its treasury activities, it might be in the early days of losing its pride of place amongst Tier 1 banks.

With the CEO, Segun Agbaje transiting from his position as bank CEO to HoldCo CEO in July 2021, it is hoped that he hands over a Treasury function that is capable of delivering robust returns GTBank has been known for.

PoliticsKidnapping Of Monarchs “embarrassing, Troubling” – Ekiti Traditional Council by JPhilip(op): 12:17pm On Apr 16, 2021
The Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers on Friday called for the deployment of troops in the state following attacks and kidnap of royal fathers by gunmen.

The Chairman of the council and Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, made the call in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Friday.

Ajibade was reacting to the Thursday kidnap of Oba David Oyewumi, the Obadu of Ilemeso and foiled kidnap of Oba Adetutu Ajayi, the Elewu of Ewu Ekiti.

The chairman stressed the need to deploy troops to the state to assist the police in flushing kidnappers and terrorists.

Ajibade described attacks and kidnap of royal fathers in the state as “embarrassing, worrisome and troubling’’.

He urged the police to swing into action and rescue the traditional ruler of Ilemeso Ekiti, Oba David Oyewumi, who was kidnapped on Thursday night.

The traditional ruler appealed to residents of the various communities in the state to give useful information on suspicious persons and movements.

BusinessAfrican-american Millionaire Investor Chris Johnson Calls Nigerians “scammers” by JPhilip(op): 4:47pm On Nov 26, 2020
An African-American online trader and investment coach, Chris Johnson aka Wealth Squad Chris has been called out for describing Nigerians as “scammers”.

Johnson, who described himself as a “Self-Made Multimillionaire” on Twitter, said this on Thursday after some persons he did not name impersonated him.

The investment coach, who tweets from @CJ_Johnson17th, said that the persons created fake Twitter accounts using his name and began to interact with clients who were made to believe they were talking to him.

Johnson shared details of the incident on Twitter alongside a screenshot of one of the fake pages interacting with a client.

The Army veteran said that the scammers were “Nigerian scammers” and warned his clients against falling victims to their antics.

“These Nigerian scammers just watch my page and create fake accounts then DM people with scams.

“Pay close attention to who you’re messaging, don’t sent bitcoins to anybody you don’t know personally,” he wrote to his 116,500 followers.

He later clarified that he knew they were Nigerians after they were “caught”.

However, some Nigerians who took exception to the generalisation called Johnson out and accused him of racial profiling.

Some other Nigerian commentators said that, even if it were true that the culprits were Nigerians, it was disrespectful and condescending for the entrepreneur to insult all Nigerians based on the actions of a minute few.

But an unrepentant Johnson challenged anyone not comfortable with his use of “Nigerian scammers” to unfollow him on the social media platform.

BusinessGovernor Emefiele And His Parallel Foreign Exchange Universe by JPhilip(op): 4:10pm On Nov 25, 2020
At today’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the MPC communicated its decision to keep all monetary parameters unchanged from its previous meeting.

It appears to be a tacit admission by the monetary authorities that the CBN is at its wits end and out of monetary tools to stimulate an economy which is in its second recession in 4 years, an abysmal record for the country.

In every country, monetary authorities alone are not to be held responsible for economic outcomes as there is a fiscal side to every economic equation. However, the willingness to dabble in alternate facts by the CBN lately has succeeded in eroding trust in what was otherwise one of the remaining few respected Nigerian institutions.

Nothing reflects that more succinctly than today’s mandatory post-MPC press conference where the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele mentioned that analysts who should know better are quoting 480 naira to the US dollar as the exchange rate compared to the CBN rate of 379 naira to the US dollar. The Governor went further to state that the parallel market is a shallow market and accounts for no more than 5% of the total FX demand. While the Governor might state that the parallel market consists of retail itinerant FX hawkers, the reality reflects that Bureau De Change (BDCs) have become the parallel market.

It is interesting the Governor will make such an assertion as the facts from the CBN which he heads confirms that through all of 2019, disbursements to BDCs amounted to $12.65 billion compared to $5.55 billion for the legally recognized Importers and Exporters (I&E) window.

These statistics makes it clear that more than double the amount of dollar sales by the CBN were to this parallel market and accounts for 37% of the $34.32 billion the CBN sold last year. It is clear that the CBN is challenged with meeting FX obligations as there are loud claims that there is a backlog of FX demand hovering around $2 billion (exclusive of swaps and foreign portfolio investments). The CBN is using the same playbook from 2016/2017 of denying a reality of the markets, which it will be forced to accept no matter how long it takes.

With yields low, FPIs wary amidst low oil prices and more importantly, production caps by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Nigeria, Nigeria’s FX liquidity will remain challenged and a devaluation will be inadequate to solve FX shortages. The earlier Governor Emefiele embraces the new normal of the Naira’s realities and stop living in a parallel universe, the quicker the economy might be able to begin to stutter back to life.

TravelFG Partially Shuts 3rd Mainland Bridge Today After Stakeholders Meeting by JPhilip(op): 3:27pm On Jul 25, 2020
The Federal Government, on Saturday, partially closed the Third Mainland Bridge, Nigeria’s busiest bridge, for rehabilitation works after site inspections for traffic architecture assessments.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that work began at midnight of July 24 as workmen use crash barriers to barricade the outbound mainland traffic on Adeniji Adele junction.

They went on to line more barriers and signage on various other sections blocking off a section of the Oworonshoki bound carriageway.

Supervising the closure, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola told NAN that the traffic management and diversion architecture had been perfected at an earlier stakeholder meeting on Friday.

Popoola explained that vehicles outbound the Lagos Island, at peak periods in the morning, would use alternative routes while the Island inbound lane would take the traffic.

He said that at the peak periods in the evening, vehicles coming out of the Island would drive up till the Adeniji Adele junction before they could be diverted for about 3.5 kilometres, then return to their normal lane.

The controller added that the repairs are being carried out between Adeniji Adele Junction and Ebute Meta area of Lagos and would last for three months in the first phase.

He said that when the work is completed, the same process would be replicated for another three months on the Island-bound carriageway.

He said that the preference was for high traffic in and out the Lagos Island at peak periods.

He added that all the angles of diversion on the various points had been perfected to ensure smooth switches.

Popoola said that more diversion signs were being distributed across pathways.

He appealed for lane discipline on the part of motorists to ensure smooth movement on the bridge and all alternative routes.

“We are standing at Adeniji Adele junction, where we have one diversion, now that we have partially closed the bridge.

“If you are coming in the afternoon after the close of work and you want to use the lane that you used to go to work in the morning, this is the point where you will divert.

“You will divert to the lane that is coming from Oworonshoki.

So, after you have covered about 3.5 kilometres stretch where we are working on, you now divert to your normal lane; that is, the lane where we are carrying out repairs.

“People that are coming from Adekunle when there is no problem could ramp up to use the lane to enter the Third Mainland Bridge.

“We have perfected angles of diversions.

“The width we have now is about 23 metres and we have put the signage to help motorists know that there is diversion ahead,’’ he told NAN.

He advised motorists to restrict non-essential activities on the Island within the period of the partial closure to reduce pressure on the roads.

“My advice to motorists from this morning is that if they need to come to the Island they should obey traffic rules and regulations.

“They should also use mapped out alternative routes so that there will not be any break down of law and order,’’ he said.

Popoola added that traffic regulatory and law enforcement agencies would be on the ground to deal with both issues of gridlock and security on the highway during the six months repairs period.

Earlier, on Friday morning, stakeholders, including the federal and state government officials had, at a meeting, agreed on how to remove hitches to the traffic management design.

Thereafter, they proceeded on inspection of the bridge to redesign some angles for diversion.

The Director, Federal Highways in South West, Mr Adedamola Kuti, had assured motorists that measures were on ground to avert stress but emphasized the need for lane discipline.

Kuti said that expansion joints would be replaced between Adeniji Adele up to Ebute Meta section on the bridge.

He explained the traffic architectural design for both the morning and afternoon belts between Ilubirin through Carter Bridge and other alternative routes.

“The third mainland bridge will be available for traffic at the peak periods in the morning and in the evening.

“So, the few vehicles that would be going off-peak would use all the alternative routes,’’ Kuti said.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Fredrick Oladeinde, assured that the diversion would affect only 25 percent of traffic using the bridge.

Oladeinde said that 10 published alternative routes and water transportation available options would absorb the shocks, adding that there was no need to panic.

He said that the number of boats would be increased as well as the number of high capacity buses that would ply the bridge.

He assured that adequate measures were in place to avert gridlock and stress on the highway during the period of the closure.

Mr. Hyginus Omeje, FRSC Assistant Corps Marshals, Federal Operations, Abuja joined the LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olajide Oduyoye, who went through the inspection, on crutches, to offer advice.

The traffic experts both reeled out statistics of huge 24 hours personnel deployment on various routes to avert gridlock.

Also, Mr Mohammed Ali, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Police Command in Lagos state, unveiled security strategies and teams deployment to curb crime and criminality on the highways in case of gridlock.

NAN reports that the third mainland bridge was last shut in August 2018 for a three-day investigative maintenance check.

The 11.8km bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the Mainland.

The bridge starts from Oworonshoki, which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.

Constructed in 1990, the bridge was adjudged as the longest in Africa until 1996 when the Oct. 6 Bridge in Cairo, Egypt was completed.

PoliticsOBJ Silent About Insecurity After Foisting Buhari On Nigerians - Fayose by JPhilip(op): 2:49pm On Jul 25, 2020
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of being "curiously silent" about pervasive corruption and insecurity in Nigeria.

He stated this in a tweet on Saturday.

The ex-governor said Obasanjo helped "foist" President Muhammadu Buhari on Nigerians in 2015 by driving the narrative that incumbent Goodluck Jonathan's administration was corrupt and could not adequately tackle insecurity in the land.

Fayose queried why the former president could not speak up now that the same issues have reared their ugly heads under the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

He spoke against the backdrop of the travails of suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu and revelations of monumental corruption in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This is just as Boko Haram insurgency and bandit attacks have continued to cause deaths and destruction of property in the North-East and North-West respectively, while violent herdsmen and kidnappers keep Nigerians awake everywhere else.

He wrote, "With the level of corruption and insecurity that we are seeing in Nigeria under this APC govt,  former President Obasanjo is curiously silent.

"And it was because of alleged corruption and insecurity that Obasanjo teamed up with others to foist Buhari on Nigeria."

The ex-governor has continued to hit Obasanjo at every given opportunity since he was impeached for alleged corruption in 2006, a move believed to have the backing of the former president.

However, the Supreme Court overturned the impeachment.

Nairaland GeneralI’d Lost Hope In Becoming A Graduate Until A Miracle Took Me To Russia – Lady by JPhilip(op): 7:47am On Jul 07, 2020
A Nigerian lady, Adewunmi Olujimi-Okunola has explained how she got a Federal Government scholarship, went to Russia for study, graduated with a First Class and met her husband because of a colleague’s “mistake” at work.

She revealed this in a post on social media platform, Quora, while reacting to a question: “What is something good that arose from bad circumstances?”

The lady explained that it began in 2013 when she was just a young secondary school leaver whose parents could not afford to support her tertiary education.

She said she got an internship position at a radio station, determined to work hard at growing herself despite limited education.

Adewunmi said she was on a lunch break one day when a colleague used her computer to check for scholarship opportunities in Nigeria and mistakenly forgot to close the tab on the browser.

According to her, a link to the Federal Scholarship Board, Nigeria was open and she saw that the board was accepting entries.

Adewunmi said curiosity got her to apply although she harboured no hope of being picked due to limited available slots.

Little did she know what fate had in store for her.
