Foreign Affairs / Man Gets Surprise Phone Call From... Pope Francis! by jpilata(m): 5:11pm On Aug 14, 2013
An Italian man whose brother was shot dead in June has spoken of his shock when he answered the phone to Pope Francis, calling this week to offer his condolences.
Michele Ferri is the brother of 51-year-old Andrea, a petrol station manager who was allegedly gunned down by two men including one young employee he treated like a son.
The death shocked the north-eastern town of Pesaro.
Michele Ferri wrote a letter to the Pope telling him of his inability to forgive the killers and was shocked when he picked up the telephone on Wednesday evening to hear: "Ciao Michele, it's Pope Francis."
At first Mr Ferri thought it was a joke but said he was overcome with emotion when he realised it was really Francis on the line fromthe Vatican.
"He told me he cried when he read the letter I wrote to him," MrFerri said.
The Pope also asked to speak to Mr Ferri's mother to express his personal sympathy.
The telephone call is the latest in aseries of spontaneous personal gestures by Pope Francis that have surprised Catholics around the world since he was elected Pope in March.
"I forgot to ask him if he wanted to visit us in Pesaro," Mr Ferri said.
Father Mario Amadeo, a town priest who knows the family well and conducted the funeral in June, said he did not know about the letter to the Pope until Mr Ferri's mother told him.
"It's a very beautiful gesture that indicates the kindness and greatness of this Pope," he said.
Pope Francis has adopted an informal approach since the nightof his election when he greeted the crowds in St Peter's Square with a simple "Buona sera" or good evening.
He has made daily contact with ordinary people a priority ever since and told a friend earlier this year he shunned the papal apartments because he did not want to be isolated.
Two men have been arrested and accused of firing seven shots at Mr Ferri through the windscreen of his car as he was driving home and fleeing with the key to his company safe.

Crime / 14-year-old Schoolboy Sexually Assaulted Teacher In Locked Classroom by jpilata(m): 7:31pm On Aug 13, 2013
A 14-year-old schoolboy has been jailed after he barricaded his teacher inside a classroom then laughed as he sexually assaulted her.

Desperate colleagues tried to break down the door when they heard the teacher screaming for help but could not stop the boy, now 15, from Wrexham.

Staff fought their way into the school's computer room and pulled the 'distressed and terrified' teacher to safety.

The teenager, who admitted sexual assault and was sentenced to four years’ youth detention, had put his hand up her skirt and forced himself on her.

Prosecutor Karl Scholz told Mold Crown Court: 'The teacher and the boy were in the classroom when he closed the door and snapped the latch shut.

'He told her he had things on his mind and took hold of her and hugged her.

'She managed to get away and wanted to leave the room but realised the door was locked.

'The schoolboy then put his hand up the teacher’s skirt and carried out a serious sexual assault on her.'

Mr Scholz said staff outside could hear their colleague scream and the boy laughing.

When they eventually got in the teacher was 'very distressed' and had a 'terrified' expression on her face.

Mold Crown Court court was told the teacher had been unable to return to work since the horrific school sex attack at the 700-pupil high school in North Wales.

The schoolboy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had previous convictions for two sexual assaults and was on bail for a third when he attacked his teacher.

Steven Edwards, defending, said the boy had suffered a difficult childhood and had been the victim of abuse.

Judge Greg Bull QC told the schoolboy: 'You attacked one of your teachers, barricaded her into the computer room and forced yourself on her.

'It was a terrifying experience for a woman who was only there to try and help you.'

The teenager was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Politics / 34 Senators Have Sponsored No Bills In Two Years, View List by jpilata(m): 10:23pm On Jul 31, 2013
About one-third of Nigeria's upper chamber,
including Senate President David Mark, has not
sponsored any bill since coming to office,
according to official records released by the
Senate.
Do you remember that Nigerian legislators
collect the highest salaries globally? Now, if
these senators have not been initiating bills in the
senate, then what have they been doing?
For the President, this is understandable as he is
not expected to table any bill in his capacity as
presiding officer of the Senate. Here is the list of
the 34 senators who have not initiated any bill
despite being paid one billion Naira so far...
Senators who did not sponsor any bill in the two
years under review, according to the assessment
report, include Jibrilla Mohammed Bindowo
(PDP, Adamawa), Chris Ngige (ACN,
Anambra), Babayo Garba Gamawa (PDP,
Bauchi), George Akume (ACN, Benue), Maina
Ma'aji Lawan (ANPP, Borno), Mohammed Ali
Ndume (PDP, Borno), Ahmad Zannah (PDP,
Borno), Nwanko Christopher (PDP, Delta),
Oguji Sunny (PDP, Ebonyi) and Babafemi
Ojudu (ACN, Ekiti).
Other senators with no bills are Mohammed
Danjuma Goje (PDP, Gombe), Abdulazeez
Usman (PDP, Jigawa), Ahmed Makarfi (PDP,
Kaduna), Mohammed Sani Saleh (CPC,
Kaduna), Kabiru Gaya (ANPP, Kano), Sadiq
Yar'Adua (CPC, Katsina), Mohammed Magoro
(PDP, Kebbi), Suleiman Adoke (PDP,
Nasarawa), Solomon Ewuga (CPC, Nasarawa),
Obadara Olugbenga Onoalapa (ACN, Ogun),
Kunlere Boluwaji (LP, Ondo), Robert Boroffice
(LP, Ondo), Olusola Adeyeye (ACN, Osun) and
Hosea Agboola Ayoola (PDP, Oyo).
Also on the list are Magnus Abe (PDP, Rivers),
Wilson Asinobi Ake (PDP, Rivers), Mohammed
Maccido (PDP, Sokoto), Abubakar Umar Turare
(PDP, Taraba), Aisha Jummai Alhassan (PDP,
Taraba), Alkali Jajere (ANPP, Yobe), Bukar
Abba Ibrahim (ANPP, Yobe), Ahmed Sani
Yarima (ANPP, Zamfara), Sahabi Alhaji Ya'u
(PDP, Zamfara) and Kabiru Garba Marafa
(ANPP, Zamfara).
Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal
Commission (RMAFC) records in possession of
Daily Trust show that each senator is entitled to
N35 million in yearly salaries and allowances.
Based on this alone, the 34 senators would have
collectively received more than N1 billion in
wages, apart from other hefty allowances
received in quarterly installments.
One billion Naira for doing nothing? Hia!

Politics / PDP Rivers State Condemns Hasty Takeover Of State House Of Assembly by jpilata(m): 5:17am On Jul 27, 2013
The Rivers state chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the resolution of the Nigerian Senate to take over the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly saying it is rather toohasty and cannot be in the best interest of the state.
In a decision reached on Thursday, the party expressed its dissatisfaction with the position of the National Assembly throughJerry Needam, the Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman of the party, Hon Felix Obuah in a statement.
The party argued that the only rationale in the findings of the investigation by the Senate Committee on the Rivers state crisis which indicted Governor Chibuike Amaechi is that he (Amaechi) having lost grip and can no longer conduct the affairs of the State, should throw in the towel.
Besides, the takeover of the affairs of the State House of Assembly has created a vacuum inthe governance of the state, which further weakens the collapsing leadership structure of the Amaechi administration and therefore does not help the state out of the present situation.
The statement went further to say that the highly reputed Nigerian Senate went on to hastily deliberate on the issue when it knows that the matter is in court over an earlier decision by the National Assembly to take over the State House of Assembly, describing it as deviant and prejudicial and from the position of the law as cited by the National Assembly, it’s evident that the only reason for their unnecessary intervention is to save Amaechi from a possible impeachment as though the impeachment clause is unconstitutional and affects only Rivers State House of Assembly.
The party asked why the governor of Rivers state is afraid of being impeached since he claims that all the House of Assembly members save five are his ardent supporters.
“We are particularly worried because in all of this, it’s the resources of the state and the taxpayers’ money that Governor Amaechi is frittering away to woo supporters for his personal ambition to become a vice president at the expense of the state

Politics / Borno LG Chairman Punished Publicly By Soldiers by jpilata(m): 9:27pm On Jul 26, 2013
The chairman violated checkpoint regulations.
Soldiers on Thursday inflicted corporal punishment on a local government chairman in Borno State.
The caretaker chairman of Hawul Local Government Area, Daniel Malang, received severe corporal punishment in the hands of the Joint Task Force for allegedly breaking checkpoint regulations and talking rudely to soldiers.
Mr. Malang, who reportedly has a reputation for breaking traffic rule especially at military check post ran out of luck when he attempted to shunt his way across a long queue of vehicles along Maiduguri-Biu road.
A PREMIUM TIMES reporter who witnessed the incident heard the chairman telling the soldiers that “don’t you know me? I am the executive chairman of Hawul localgovernment.”
A soldier, unimpressed with Mr. Malang’s statement responded by saying “does this place resemble Hawul local government; even if na Hawul be this, does that give you the license to break my order by not following the queue?”
The soldier ordered the council boss to park his Peugeot 406 car and asked him to come out for frog-jump alongside his driver while other motorists watched on.
The soldiers kept the chairman there for hours before he was later freed with a stern warning not to repeat such act again.
Sources close to the chairman saidhe recently suffered similar fate in Biu when soldiers gave him a similar treatment for breaking check-post regulation.
Borno is currently under emergency rule and has a heavy presence of soldiers to check the insurgency by the Boko Haram and other crimes.

Politics / Ivers ACN Seeks Amaechi’s Removal by jpilata(m): 6:05am On Jan 26, 2013
in Rivers State has called for the removal of Governor Chibuike RotimiAmaechi as the chairman of NigerianGovernors’ Forum (NGF).
In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND in Port Harcourt, the party accused Amaechi of using his position as NGF chairman to harass and intimidate his perceived political enemies.
The statement, which was signed bythe party’s publicity secretary, Jerry Needam, said it was high time the National Assembly and the Rivers State House of Assembly rose to assert their authority and cut down the overbearing influence of the governor.
According to the statement, “The governor of Rivers State is using the forum to push for his personal presidential agenda which is not healthy for Nigeria’s nascent democracy. The only constitutionallyrecognised groups to check against the excesses of the executive and any abuse of office are the legislature and the judiciary, both of which operate under the critical and prying eyes of virile opposition as a democratic feature.
“The only constitutionally recognised groups to check against the excesses of the executive and any abuse of office are the legislature and the judiciary, both of which operate under the critical and prying eyes of virile opposition as a democratic feature.”
The ACN accused the governor of hiding under the NGF to attack President Goodluck Jonathan, lawmakers, as well as appoint and sack elected local government chairmen at will, adding that Amaechi was out to antagonise efforts of the federal government and people of the state.
It said: “We believe that the Governors’ Forum is a parallel federal government in Nigeria, and the chairman, Amaechi, a parallel president in the country, and must be stopped before they push the country into strangulation, having stagnated the economy already.

Politics / Ondo Commissioner Slaps Director by jpilata(m): 7:32pm On Jan 15, 2013
The Ondo State Commissioner for Transport allegedly slapped a directorin a different ministry.
The Commissioner of Transport in Ondo State, Nicholas Tofowomo, went to a different ministry- the Ministry of Works - and slapped a director there, Ondo State civil servants have alleged.
Staffers of the Ondo State Ministry of Works on Monday staged a protest toregister their displeasure over the alleged assault of a Director in the Ministry by Mr. Tofowomo.
Mr. Tofowomo was said to have slapped one M.J. Afeniforo, the Director Mechanical of the Works Ministry, during an argument between the two men.
Sources said the commissioner had approached Mr. Afeniforo for a tractor but he was told that all the tractors owned by the works ministrywere being used for different projects.
The director reportedly explained to the commissioner that even the Commissioner for Works, Gboye Adegbenro, who has authority to release the tractor was at Ilara Mokin where he was inspecting road projects.
The source said Mr. Tofowomo called his counterpart at the Ministry of Works on the telephone, telling him that Mr. Afeniforo said the works minister had diverted all the tractors to his home town.
An argument ensued during which the commissioner allegedly slapped the director for arguing with him; an attitude, the source in the ministry said has been the commissioner’s habit.
Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress converged on the premises of the ministry to protest the assault on Mr. Afeniforo.
The quick intervention of the Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Council, Solomon Adelegan, prevented the crisis from degenerating as he persuaded the workers against taking laws into their hands.
The Head of Service, Kosemani Kolawole, has invited the assaulted director and the permanent secretaryof ministry to a meeting to address the issues.
The workers have, however, vowed to deal with the commissioner.
Efforts by PREMIUM TIMES to reach Mr.Tofowomo were unsuccessful as he did not pick or return calls made to his phone.

Crime / Uncle Caught Having Sex With His 12-year-old Niece by jpilata(m): 6:53pm On Jan 12, 2013
A 19-year-old man has been arrested after he was caught being intimate with his 12-year-old niece inside a building.
The juvenile's mother caught the twored-handed at about 10 pm.
Meanwhile, the man was convicted on his own plea to unlawfully having sexual intercourse with a young person when he appeared in court.
He was sentenced to six months imprisonment of which two months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that period.
The State's case as presented by Mr Paul Mpofu is that the man first had sex with his niece on 6 December lastyear and was caught red-handed on the second occasion on 1 January.
On 6 December the juvenile was on her way from school in the company of her friend when they met the uncle near a local business centre. The juvenile's friend proceeded homeand the man asked his niece to remain behind. He then led her to a nearby bush where they had sex once.
On 1 January the juvenile went to thelocal shops but was late to return home. Her mother made a follow up at about 10pm. Upon arriving at the business centre she asked people around and they indicated that they had seen her enter a grinding mill.
She proceeded to the grinding mill and caught her daughter red-handed in the act with the uncle, who ran away after realising he had been caught.
A report was later made to the police leading to the uncle's arrest. In mitigation, the man said he was in a relationship with his niece and that she had consented to sex. Source http://m.naij.com/news/19721.html

Politics / Hadizatu Ahmed, Female Ruler In Northern Nigeria by jpilata(m): 5:59pm On Jan 12, 2013

Predominantly Muslim, Northern Nigeria is made up of 19 states, and as at 2012, 12 of these states have instituted the Sharia Law. Thus, this is the last place one will expect a female monarch ruling over thousands of subjects. Well, that is precisely the case of Her Royal Highness, Queen Hajiya Hadizatu Ahmed, the Magajiya & Paramount Ruler of Kumbwada in Kano State. Thanks to a curse placed about 200 years ago, this is one place where a man can never sit on the throne and rule. Those that attempted it were said to have paid dearly and did not spend more than seven days as ruler as they were said to have all died mysteriously. Interesting. But the story is just starting.

For more than six generations now, Kumbwada has been ruled by a female. Queen Hadizatu Ahmed has an unquestionable authority over her people, who number over 33,000 as at 2007. O boy, that’s something! Listen to her:

“My father (Prince Amadu Kumbwada) decided to see if he could break the spell but he failed. In his first week on the throne he became so sick that he had to abdicate and was rushed out of the village. He died three weeks later.”

Now in her early 60s and having been on throne for more than 12 years, Queen Ahmed is still ruling in a society that is mainly male-dominated and intensely paternalistic. According to her, the curse was placed about two centuries ago by another legendary woman, the warrior princess Magajiya Maimuna (Magajiya is a title of honour for women in this part of Nigeria). She led her cavalry and troops from Zaria and then conquered the queendom. After the conquest, Magajiya Maimuna decided to install her brother as the ruler but he became ill and died in under a week. She replaced him with her second brother and he met the same fate. After the loss of her two brothers, she took the bull of Kumbwada by the horns and made herself the Queen. She ruled for 83 years, says Queen Ahmed, as she adjusted her white veil. Her own grandmother ruled for 73 years until she died at 113. I am trusting their records o!

She says: “I don’t face any resistance from my subjects, they obey my commands as they obey their God because I’m a fair ruler who ensures justice in my kingdom. It’s a women’s affair. Women are the rulers and they rule as effectively as men, sometimes even better than men.”

From time to time, her male subjects led by their chief imam (religious leader) visit her in the palace to pay homage and listen to all she has to say while nodding in submission. That reminds Iyaniwura of the other northern monarchs like the Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Zazzau and the Shehu of Borno who receive endless praises (rankayadede thins) from their subjects. But she is not as wealthy as her male counterparts. She has a simple blue silk-embroidered chair as her throne (don’t compare that with the gold-gilded throne of Dr. Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano). The chief imam supports her and despite the criticism from other clerics, he says:

“We can’t live without a leader, and the fact that any male rulers that ascend the throne die quickly and mysteriously while female rulers reign for many years makes our case a peculiar one,” Muhammad says. “This is an exceptional situation none of us can change.”

He was highly regarded as a true professional who contributed to the growth of art in the country.
The Utagba-Uno, Delta State-born actor’s first role in the movie was in Sanya Dosunmu’s 1974 celluloid film, `Dinner with the Devil.’
In his homily at the requiem mass forthe deceased, Director of Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, urged the three tiers of government to help Nigerian artistes by investing in the sector.

Mr. Osu stressed the need for the government to invest in and develop the sector to enhance its growth and help the artistes.
“Our entertainers need not die poor. It is a sector that thrives and can helpbetter them.

Politics / Yoruba Deity Warned Us Of Palace Fire – Alaafin Of Oyo by jpilata(m): 5:37pm On Jan 12, 2013
The palace fire was caused by PHCN’s actions. The Oyo monarch, Lamidi Adeyemi, has said the palace had the premonition of the fire outbreak which destroyed property and artefacts during the week.
The Alaafin, who was speaking during the sympathy visit of the caretaker chairmen of local governments under his domain, said Ori, one of the deities affected by the inferno, had told them that there would be a fire incident in the palace and told them to disconnect the wires connecting its room.
“We were told that there would be fire and we actually didn’t take the warning for a joke. But we thought we were going to do the disconnection the following morning. That following morning never came,”he said.
Recalling the significance of damage done to the palace, Mr. Adeyemi said while the property and other material lost to the fire could be replaced, the artefacts, which tell about the culture and history of Yoruba race, have gone for life.
“Apart from coming here to sympathise with the Oyo palace, I think we should see this incident as acolossal hit to the Yoruba race. It means that most of the things that the generations succeeding us would point to as identity of their history have gone,” said the monarch.
How fire started
The palace has officially stated that the fire was caused by an electrical surge.
According to the Alaafin, the PHCN took off electricity supply from the palace the night preceding the inferno. So, a generator was used to supply power to the palace through the night.
When the PHCN restored electricity supply early in the morning, the voltage was too high, igniting fire which wrecked monumental havoc tothe palace.
Since the incident, the Oyo monarch has been receiving visitors, who throng his palace to sympathise with him. Among the first callers was the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, who promised to assist in rebuilding the burnt portion after he was taken through the affected premises.

The man, named only as Miguel, swung onto one of high-voltage cables causing a massive explosion before plummeting to the ground in Santiago, Chile.
The moment was caught in a dramatic amateur video filmed byone of the onlookers.
Horrified locals called police to the Lo Prado area of the Chilean capital yesterday afternoon after seeing the man 'playing around' on the pylon near his home, according to reports.
A crowd gathered as he climbed to the top at around 4pm before balancing on the beams and swinging back and forth inches away from the live wires.
Firefighters tried for 30 minutes to coax him down and placed an airbag at the foot of the pylon to catch him if he fell.
Neighbours said that it wasn't thefirst time the man had performeddangerous acrobatics on pylons inthe area after becoming high on drugs.
But this time his legs touched oneof the cables, killing him instantly and causing an explosion which set fire to two nearby houses.
The flames were quickly put out but more than 500 homes were left without electricity source http://www..com/talk/topic,140572.0.html

Woman Crushes Corps Member To Death, Claims He Was Busy Pinging On The Road

The police in Ogun State on Thursday arraigned a 52-year-old woman, Kehinde Olubanke, before an Abeokuta Magistrate's Court for allegedly crushing a 28-year-old youth corps member, Egbe Ogbu, with her car.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Anabel Emmanuel, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence on January 8 while driving along the Ogun Secretariat Complex Road, Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta.

The prosecutor said the accused, who was driving in a Nissan Almera car, sped dangerously and caused the death of the youth corps member serving in the state.

The prosecutor added that though the accused drove the car as a "learner" with a permit, she failed to do so in company with a licensed driver beside her as stipulated by the law.

The prosecutor therefore opposed the accused person's application for bail, arguing that she should rather be charged for murder because the alleged offence was contrary to and punishable under sections 325 and 18 Vol 4 and 19 (12) (iii) Road Traffic Regulations Vol 4 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.

But the accused, Olubanke, who was not represented by a counsel pleaded not guilty to the charge of manslaughter preferred against her.

She said the incident occurred because the late corps member who was so engrossed in the usage of his BlackBerry phone while crossing the road forgot himself completely and suddenly strayed in front of her moving car.

"Ogbu was busy pinging on the road; I did not know when he got in front of my car. I have been driving for over eight months now and I have been very careful," she said.

The Magistrate, Matins Akinyemi, in his ruling said though the case was pathetic, it would still be treated as manslaughter and not murder because there was no motive behind the offence.

"It is a very sad thing, particularly for the family of the boy who would cease being a corps member in a couple of months," the magistrate said.

The court therefore granted bail to the accused in the sum of N 200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing till March 7.

Accordingto the victim, “he ordered me to remove my dress and pant and sit on afloor and spread my legswide open while he was busy muttering andpretending he was praying.

On why she did not raise an alarm, Busola said she was overwhelmed by the prophecy he told her.

Politics / Oshiomole Calls For DIG, Cp’s Sack On Oyerinde’s Case by jpilata(m): 9:54am On Jan 11, 2013
ABUJA — Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and the Police were, yesterday, locked in a battle of words over the alleged shabby investigation into the murder of his private secretary, Olaitan Oyerinde.
While the governor called for the sack of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Force Criminal Investigations Department, Peter Gana, for a shoddy job, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said it was only the court that could determine the case, as it was already before the court.
The governor, who spoke while delivering a keynote address at the inauguration of a ‘Code of Conduct for officers and men of Nigeria Police, noted that the Deputy Commissioner of Police who was sent to investigate the case should ordinarily not be wearing a police uniform.
He called on President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene in the matter, and condemned the AIG for arresting and detaining an innocent human rights activist, rather than going after the culprits who were eventually arrested by the State Security Service, SSS.
Mr IG, I am aggrieved
His words: “Mr. IG, I must say I am aggrieved. I am aggrieved over the murder of my private secretary and the way the investigation was trivialized. I am saying this knowing that the Vice President is here representing Mr. President.
“My secretary was murdered in cold blood and you dispatched a DIG to supervise that investigation. A DIG is a sufficiently senior officer, next in rank to the IGP.
“They came to Benin and did what Fela (Ransome-Kuti) would have called police magic. In the end, they went for a civil rights activist and charged him with the offence of murder.”
The governor alleged that the DIG conspired with other officers involved in the investigation to shield the killers of Oyerinde, noting that for this ignoble act, they were no longer fit to wear police uniform.
“The DIG Force CID has a case to answer… in which case he cannot wear his police uniform. He must bedismissed. The Deputy Commissionerof Police that he used, who claimed that they have done a thorough job, has no business wearing police uniform.
“The weapon that was used for the murder was used for armed robberyearlier, recovered by the police and under police custody at the time my secretary was murdered.
“So, the man who murdered my secretary was in police custody, the gun used was in police custody and these are the findings of the police.
“The only conclusion that can be reached is that the police ordered the murder of my private secretary. The officer wrote this in black and white.
“I ask you (IG) to read it. He wrote that he has done a thorough job under a very skillful DIG in charge of Force CID and the sky is their limit. And I am asking the Vice President to report to the President that if they do not find the killers of Olaitan, he can’t expect the people of Edo State and all those who knowOlaitan, to have confidence in the security agencies.
“I feel terrible that as a governor, I can’t get justice. If I can’t get justice, then an average Nigerian cannot expect justice and we can’t have justice if we can’t tell the truth.”
Culture of impunity
Oshiomhole lamented that one of the problems of the Nigerian state, including the police, was the culture of impunity where people did thingswrongly and got away with it.
He said: “This country cannot be reduced to a banana republic,” adding that when stick and carrot were appropriately applied, the message of discipline would be clearto all. Source http://nairareport.com/oshiomole-calls-for-dig-cps-sack-on-oyerindes-case/

Politics / Saudi Beheads Sri Lankan Maid For Murdering Baby by jpilata(m): 5:52pm On Jan 09, 2013
RIYADH (AFP) – Saudi Arabia beheaded a Sri Lankan maid on Wednesday after she was convicted of murdering her employer’s baby, the interior ministry announced, despite calls for a stay of execution.
Rizana Nafeek smothered the infant to death after an argument with the child’s mother, her employer, the ministry statement carried by the official SPA news agency said.
She was beheaded in the Dawadmi province near the capital Riyadh.
Human Rights Watch had on Tuesday urged Saudi King Abdullah and the interior ministry to halt Nafeek’s execution.
The New York-based watchdog saidthat Nafeek, who was only 17 when the incident occurred in 2005,had retracted “a confession that she said was made under duress, and says that the baby died in a choking accident while drinking from a bottle.”
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had sent an appeal to King Abdullah on Sunday “requesting a stay of the execution until a settlement can be reached between the baby’s family and a Saudi reconciliation committee,” said HRW.
HRW “opposes the death penalty in all circumstances because of its inherent cruelty and finality,” it said. “Given the possibility of mistakes in any criminal justice system, innocent people may be executed.”
This is the second execution of the year in Saudi Arabia after a Syrian was beheaded on Tuesday for drug trafficking.
Last year, the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom beheaded 76 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. HRW put the number at 69.
Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under its strict version of sharia, or Islamic law.

Politics / Venezuela Postpones Inauguration For Cancer-stricken Chavez by jpilata(m): 5:41pm On Jan 09, 2013
Venezuela postponed the inauguration of President Hugo Chavez for a new term due to healthproblems, the government said on Tuesday, another sign the socialist leader's cancer may be bringing an end to his 14 years in power.
The 58-year-old former soldier who has dominated the South American OPEC nation since 1999 has not beenheard from since surgery on Dec. 11 in Cuba.
The surgery his fourth operation since being diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer in June 2011. The delay has outraged opposition leaders who insist that Chavez must be sworn in before the National Assembly on Jan. 10 as laid out in the constitution, or temporarily step aside and leave an ally in power.
``The commander president wants us to inform the legislature that, based on his medical team's recommendations, the post-operative recovery should extend past Jan. 10,’’ Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in a letter read to the legislature. ``As a result, he will not be able to be present at the National Assembly on that date.’’
The letter said authorities would seek another date for the inauguration ceremony but did not say when it would take place, nor give any time frame for Chavez's recovery or his return from Havana. Rather than being sworn in by the legislature, he would take his oath at a later date before the Supreme Court, the letter said, as allowed by the constitution.
Government leaders insist Chavez is completely fulfilling his duties as head of state - even though official medical bulletins say he has a severepulmonary infection and has had trouble breathing.
The government has called for a massive rally of supporters outside the presidential palace on Thursday, and allies including Uruguayan President Jose Mujica and Bolivian leader Evo Morales have confirmed they will visit Venezuela this week inspite of Chavez's absence.
But the unprecedented silence by the president - famous for regularly speaking for hours in meandering broadcasts - has left many convincedhe could be in his last days.
His resignation or death would upend politics in the oil-rich nation where he enjoys a deity-like status among poor supporters thankful forhis social largesse. His critics call hima fledgling dictator who has squandered billions of dollars from crude sales while dashing the independence of state institutions.
The constitution does not specify what happens if the president does not take office on Jan. 10. Opposition leaders argue that Congress chief Diosdado Cabello should take over as mandated by the constitution if the president's absence is formally declared. Cabello, a close Chavez ally, has ruledthat out, saying the president continues to be in charge.
``Venezuela is not a monarchy. Ours is not the Cuban system where power is passed around without an election,’’ opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who lost to Chavez in the October presidential election, told reporters on Tuesday.
Supporters have hold near-daily vigils for Chavez's recovery, while opposition activists accuse the president's allies of a Cuban-inspiredmanipulation of the situation.
Vice President Maduro, who Chavez named last month as his successor, has taken over the day-to-day running of the government and looks set to continue in the role pastThursday.
The mustachioed former bus driver lacks Chavez's charisma, but he has sought to imitate the president's style with rambunctious attacks on the opposition and televised ribbon-cutting ceremonies.
With Chavez away, major policy decisions in Venezuela, such as a widely expected devaluation of the bolivar currency, appear to be on hold. Opposition predictions of fighting within the ruling Socialist Party have not materialised, however, with Maduro and Cabello in particular pledging unity in spite of rumours of rivalry. source http://nairareport.com/venezuela-postpones-inauguration-for-cancer-stricken-chavez/
