Politics / Air Crashes And Fear Of Boarding Helicopter By Govs by jpilata(m): 12:07pm On Jan 05, 2013
It is a truism that air plane disasters have claimed lives of prominent persons in Nigeria, especially during the administrations of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan. CHRIS OGBOR, in this piece, urges state governors to contribute their own quotas to make the aviation sector safer, instead of shunning travelling by helicopter
It is doubtlessly disheartening to recall that several air plane disasters have claimed the lives of prominent Nigerians, particularly in the Fourth Republic.
Late Sir Patrick Yakowa was the first Nigerian serving executive governor to die in air crash, but General Andrew Owoye Azazi (rtd) was not the first military officer to pass on infatal air accident. For instance, in September 2006, a Nigerian military plane crashed in Oko village, Benue State and 15 generals of the Nigerian Army perished on the spot.
Earlier, specifically on 4th May 2002, an aircraft belonging to EAS Airlines crashed in Kano resulting in the loss of 77 lives, including former Sports Minister, Mr. Ishaya Mark-Aku and Mrs. Julie Useni, wife of retired Lieutenant General Jerry Useni.
Worthy of note, also, is that 117 persons perished when Bellview air plane crashed in Lisa village, near Lagos on 22nd October 2005 and on10th December same yea, Sosolisso Airlines crashed in Port Harcourt,, resulting in the loss of 108 lives including the students of Loyola Jesuit College, a reputable Catholic post-primary school in Abuja. Who knows, these students could have become Nigeria’s future leaders - commissioners, ministers, senators, governors, military officers, engineers, scientists, Nobel laureatesor even executive presidents.
Worrisome to recall is the fact that 106 persons died as a result of ADC Airlines which crashed in Abuja on 29th October 2006 resulting in the loss of 105 lives and another ADC Airline crash that claimed the lives of176 persons. Prominent Nigerians who died in the ADC plane crashes included ex-Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Machido, founding managing director of NEWS Engineering (Nig.) Limited, Sir Cyprain Nweze and former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Professor ErnestOnwunili respectively.
With regard to air crashes involving helicopters, the first one occurred when an OAS service helicopter crashed in Warri, Delta State on 10thNovember 2006 with the loss of four persons. The second helicopter air accident was the one that occurred in Ife Odan in Osun State on 29th July 2011, killing three persons and the Police Bell helicopter crash which claimed the life of a Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. John Haruna. The Navy helicopter that caught fire after take-off on 15th December 2012 and claimed the lives of Sir Yakowa, General Azazi and four others was the latest helicopter air accident.
This woeful tale of air disasters in Nigeria, as adumbrated above, is doubtlessly the reason why two governors and some very important personalities (VIPs) refused to travel by helicopter from Port Harcourt to Yenagoa for late General Andrew Azazi’s burial ceremony penultimate Saturday.
It would be recalled that a national daily (not LEADERSHIP WEEKEND) reported that Governors Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Emmanuel Uduagha of Delta State, Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah and some VIPsshunned the arrangements made for them to be airlifted to Yenagoa, but opted to travel by road for Azazi’s funeral event.
Meanwhile, some Nigerians have described the governors’ fear as cowardly, unfounded and unnecessary. The question on the lips of some of them is, if Nigeria’s aviation minister is afraid to travel by air (or helicopter), who then should embark of a journey by air? Do the two governors and the minister mentioned above think that travelling by helicopter is the only cause of death? Or, is travelling by road now safer than by air?
The death-fearing governors, et al, should note that the ten persons who died during a religious gathering at a sports stadium in Luanda, the Angolan capital on New Year eve and the sixty Ivorians who met their untimely death as a result of stampede at a stadium in Abidan on New Year day (01-01-13) were not killed through helicopter crash. Armed banditry, suicide bombers, trigger-happy gunmen, flood disaster and auto accidents have claimed more lives in Nigeria than air crashes.
If the truth must be said, what is required of the aviation minister and governors is judicious use of funds allocated to them. The N13.4 billion fuel subsidy money that was diverted by 20 suspects and the alleged missing N195 billion pension funds are sufficient enough to fix the erring aviation sector so asto drastically reduce air crashes in the country.
Thus, instead of expressing unnecessary fear or reusing to boardhelicopters, governors should embark on massive construction of new roads, maintain existing dilapidated ones in their respective states as well as make meaningful financial contributions to improve the aviation sector and the welfare of the citizenry.

Politics / Church Of England Endorses Gay Bishops by jpilata(m): 11:45am On Jan 05, 2013
The Church of England has dropped its opposition to gay clergymen in civil partnerships becoming bishops, it confirmed Friday.
The announcement by the church's House of Bishops would allow a homosexual clergyman in a civil partnership to become a bishop as long as he promised to remain celibate.
"The House has confirmed that clergy in civil partnerships, and livingin accordance with the teaching of the Church on human sexuality, can be considered as candidates for the episcopate," said the Bishop of Norwich, Graham James.
The issue has divided England's statechurch since 2003, when gay priest Jeffrey John was named bishop of Reading, in southeast England.
The move outraged conservatives within England's state church, and John was forced to resign. He was also a candidate for bishop of Southwark in London in 2010, but traditionalists again blocked his appointment.
All clergywomen, regardless of their sexuality, remain banned from becoming bishops in the Church of England after its governing body, the General Synod, failed to vote through the change in November.
Gay men and women who are in civil partnerships — legal unions giving them similar rights to those of married couples — have been allowed to join the clergy since 2005so long as they vow to remain celibate.
The church has spent the past 18 months determining whether the conditions should also apply to gay clergymen who wish to become bishops.
The House of Bishops announced the change on December 20 but it was brought to light by the Church Times, an Anglican newspaper, on Friday.
Gay couples have had the right to enter into a civil partnership in Britain since 2005, offering them the same legal rights as married heterosexual couples on a range of issues such as inheritance, pensions and immigration.
The British government proposed last month to allow same-sex marriages in religious institutions that wish to provide them, but the established Churches of England andWales would be exempt from the plans.
Married heterosexual clergy in the Church of England are not expected to remain celibate. Justin Welby, the incoming Archbishop of Canterbury who takes charge of the church in March, is married with five children.

Politics / Police Defuse Bomb In Rivers Banana Farm by jpilata(m): 1:35pm On Aug 17, 2012
Police defuse bomb in Rivers banana farm Our Reporter August 16, 2012 1 Comment »
The police in Rivers State said they have defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the state-owned banana farm at Ueken in Tai Local Government Area of the state.
Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, the spokesmanfor the police command, stated this in Port Harcourt yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said the command had swept and secured the banana farm, adding that unknown persons might have planted the IED to scare workers from the plantation.
Ugwuegbulam said the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) of the command had swung into action on receiving the information and defused the IED successfully.
He said there was no casualty and thatthe incident occurred on Wednesday, August 15.
NAN learnt that the state government had acquired the land to establish a banana farm in collaboration with a Mexican firm last year. The acquisition of the land had been causing misunderstanding in the community, as some persons alleged that government did not pay compensationafter taking over their land. Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor of Rivers State, David Iyofor has said that there was no bomb explosion in Banana Plantation in Tai Rivers State.
He said: “Our attention has been drawn to reports of a purported bomb explosion at the Banana Plantation in Tai, Rivers State. “We must state categorically that there was no bomb explosion at or within the perimeters of the banana farm plantation.
“We are aware that some sort of device went off but this was some reasonable distance away from our plantation and certainly not within theperimeters of the farm. “Journalists should please always crosscheck and double-check whatever information they have before going to press. “Again, we want to reassure all and sundry that Rivers State remains safe, conducive and open for business,” David Iyofor said.

Anglican Archbishop to Jonathan: Corruption, not constitution, should be your priority 3
July 29, 2012 | 1:03 am
News
By JOSEPH ERUNKE
Archbishop of Anglican Communion, Most Rev Nicholas Okoh, wants President Goodluck Jonathan to strictly tackle corruption which, he noted, had eaten deep into the Nigerian system.
This is even as he advised the president to halt the mass demolition of houses in Abuja dominated by low income earners, saying going ahead with the demolition will give rise to high rate of corruption as people will strive to illegally enrich themselves to meet up with the challenges confronting them.
The bishop, who spoke with newsmen, Friday, in Abuja, was reacting to the on-going attemptsto amend the country’s constitution. He reasoned that corruption was more critical to address at the moment than the constitution.
He said government should better focus attention on seeking an end to corruption rather than amendment of the constitution.
Noting that Nigerians were deeplyengaged in corrupt practices, Okoh regretted that enforcement of the laws of the land was the greatest challenge the country was facing, adding, “it is not so much problem of constitution but people are dedicated to evil.”
He said that corruption endemic was not only among politicians but also people in all sectors.
He spoke with journalists at Abuja during the First Session of the Second Synod, with the theme: “Behold obedience is better than sacrifice.”
Commenting on demolition of houses in Abuja, the cleric noted that“no country is only built for the rich” even as he advised the Federal Government to look into accommodation problems in Abuja, saying it was partly responsible for corruption in the civil service.
He urged the rich to learn to live together with the poor, saying ‘’government should pay attentionto the accommodation of low income civil servants because if the low income civil servant is to pay from
his salary he can’t. So it encourages corruption”
