You can deworm during pregnancy it just depend on the type of dewormer you’re using. You can give the sheep Albendazole oral solution until the last 3 month of pregnancy .

Please don't try it😬.
Good evening everyone. There are two ways to look at the issue. First we aren’t sure if she is pregnant or not. If the sheep is in its 4th month then you should start seeing signs of pregnancy like enlarge stomach, the breast getting bigger.

New kid 🚨. This Uda ewe is the first mother that was born on our farm. She’s way bigger than every other ewe I bought !! She was crossed with my Yankasa ram hence the color of the lamb. I am loving this journey.

some will survive but a lot will die trying bto adapt
Not really. I have more than 20 bought Uda on my farm and have only recorded two deaths which I can even say it’s not because of the grass. The moment they land on my farm it’s always straight to the pasture.

dry grass
Dry grass will work. In my own case they have to adapt to the environment conditions here because what am after is actually breeding them here in my own southern climatic conditions. So either you survive or die.

Picture below is them snacking on glyricidia leaves which is very high in protein.

You can only try your best when you buy sheep’s from all these popular markets because you have no record to work with to know what conditions they might have and how best to handle it. If only sheep’s can talk grin
AgricultureRe: Diary Of A Sheep Farmer by Jub101(op): 8:42pm On Aug 22, 2023
If you can recall I got a new stock in July which consists of 8 sheeps and 1 ram. I have lost two of the sheep’s. The first due to diarrhea which I did my very best using different antibiotics such as sulphadinidine, tetracycline, metronidazole all to no avail.
The second died due to abortion which I can’t say what really triggered it.
I have learnt a lot through this new stock as all my other stock which I got in May(6 of them) are still hale and hearty and one of them is even with a lamb .
I will keep trying my best and know very strongly I will continue no matter what!
It’s all part of the journey.

Good day Boss, I will be glad if anyone can share us a feed formula method. I mean what we can compound, thanks.
You can compound Pkc, broken maize, soya beans and wheat offal together. If you can get cassava peels too add it . Your ratio of mixture will be determined by how fast you want them to get fattened. Also add mineral premix and salt very important.

AgricultureRe: Diary Of A Sheep Farmer by Jub101(op):
You can add it to the feed you’re giving them, gradually they will adapt and you increase it quantity. Kindly still keep giving them their regular feed.

Wow. I've really learned from your response. Can you through more light to your No. 2? Do you mean sheep thrive or adapt to swampy areas better than goat?
No.5 response is a surprise to me. I'd expected goats to command better prices than sheep. Perhaps sheep is more valued in your area.

Thanks for your response.
Goats don’t tolerate water as much as sheep do. Sheep can be left in the rain with no effect on their health that’s not true for goats.
Goats command good price and when you compare the prices of both of them due to growth rate sheep (both male and female) are more expensive.

Jub101 why do you choose to focus on sheep only? Won't goats have been a good complement? And besides, goats seem to have higher market value/price.

I believe the care and management is quite similar.
Thank you for the question. The main reasons I consider sheep to be my main focus are plenty but I will try and mention some :
They are herd animals which suites the kind of extensive or semi intensive husbandry i practice
2. They cohabitate easily with the swampy area my farm is located
3. They aren’t choosy to the kinds of feed they are given
4. They are grazers which means they prefer grasses to tree leaves unlike goat.
5. They grow bigger and command more prices both male and female
6. They are very calm and easy to control.

Can't something be done about rejection of kids?
If you have multiple births on your farm during the rejection I believe you can find another ewe to breastfeed her but it’s a tedious process. You will weigh your options and see what works for you.
