NLC President Omar

Nigeria labour Congress (NLC) said it will today shut down Union Bank of Nigeria (UBN) Plc for sacking bankers’ union and refusing to recognise the umbrella union.

The Group Managing Director of Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Mrs Funke Osibodu had last month written a letter, stating that the bank it would no longer recognise the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), claiming that it was an illegal body.

But the president of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwahed Omar in a statement, entitled, “Funke Asibodu’s declaration of war: NLC is equal to the task” said the NLC rejects the bank’s position and is fully aware of the “anti union antics” of Mrs Funke Osibodu.

Omar added that, “To signal her war against congress, Mrs Osibodu ordered that union dues deducted from salaries of the bank’s workers be remitted to them. This order has already been expeditiously carried out. We see all these actions and utterances as open declarations of war against Nigeria workers in general and the NLC in particular. We wish to therefore call on all affiliates of congress, our allies in the civil society and the entire Nigerian workers that the leadership of congress is ready to enforce the mandate given to it at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of Friday, February 4, 2011, where NEC resolved that workers picket the national headquarters of Union Bank and its branches across the country as from 8am on Monday, February 10, 2011.

“While Mrs Osibodu has boasted that she had deployed soldiers to guard all its branches across the country and ordered them to shoot-at-sight any worker who comes for picketing, congress wishes to state that we are ready to confront and if possible die rather than watch the management of Union Bank condemn its workers to second slavery through vagrant abuse of their rights to freedom of association as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution, the Trade Union Act 2005 and ILO conventions 87 and 88 of which Nigeria is a signatory. The shutdown will be in all the branches of the bank nationwide with the Abuja shutdown kicking off at 7: 00 am, from the NLC’s headquarters in the Central Business District, where workers will gather and proceed to branches of the bank in the city,” the NLC said.

In accordance to this order, the NLC in Kaduna has informed the general public that all branches of the bank in the state would be shut down with effect from today.

According to a statement jointly signed by the vice chairman and secretary of the council, Adamu Ango and Henry Shekarau, all affiliates of NLC in the state have been asked to participate in the picketing exercise.

Meanwhile, the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has assured that there would be no disruption of its service in all its branches nationwide today.

The bank in a statement yesterday, said, “Union Bank of Nigeria Plc staff wish to assure all our numerous and highly esteemed customers and the general public at large, that there will be no disruption of it service in all our branches nationwide, including the head office.

We use this opportunity to give assurance of improved and continued service delivery in Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. This press release is in response to the concerns of our highly esteemed customers nationwide with respect to Industrial Relations issues in our great bank and we thank our valued customers for their loyalty and patronage over the years’, the statement said.

…Labaran Now Substantive Minister

By Daniel Idonor
SPECULATIONS were Wednesday laid to rest when President Goodluck Jonathan reluctantly accepted the resignation of the Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili.
Consequently, the President has approved the appointment of Minister of State in the Ministry, Mr Labaran Maku, as the substantive Minister. The new senior Minister is now to function without a Minister of State.
Akunyili, in an emotion-laden last briefing after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, disclosed that she was quitting both the government and the ruling People Democratic Party, PDP, in order to achieve her age-long ambition to become a senator.
According to her, she intends to defect to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, where she hopes to realise the political dream to emerge as a senator representing Anambra Central Senatoral District.
Briefing State House correspondents, shortly after the FEC which was presided over by President Jonathan, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Akunyili said her decision to resign and run for the position was borne out of her zeal to serve her people and Nigeria.
“Having reflected over the years about events in Nigeria and in particular my state, Anambra, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed a defining moment in my life when I should make the sacrifice of leaving a comfortable place to go to a difficult terrain in order to build a better place for our children,” she said.
She stated further, “I have, therefore, decided to join my governor, Peter Obi, who is doing a great job in continuing to build Anambra State as an APGA senator. In this regard, I intend to pick the nomination form today (Wednesday) to run for the office of senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the national assembly”.
Akunyili had earlier in her valedictory address to the FEC, told colleagues “I am deeply grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to serve our dear country as minister of information and communications. I am equally grateful for the cooperation which you, the Vice President, who sees me as his own sister and my cabinet colleagues extended to me in the course of my duties, without which I would not have succeeded”.
She therefore sought the prayers and support of the council members in realising her political ambition.
“As I take this step, I solicit for your prayers and other forms of support. I am making this request because you are my people and my immediate constituency”, Akunyili said.
“Today is therefore a very emotional day for me in council. This is because I have been so closely bonded to most of you that my departure is like leaving a family. My heart is so heavy because in this council, I have found comfort and friendship,” she said.
Maku said President Jonathan reluctantly accepted the resignation of the former minister because of her quality service to the nation but added that since she was in quest of higher political, the president had not alternative than to allow her go.
While wishing Akunyili well in her political journey, the new minister noted that why they worked together as colleagues he enjoyed the best of relationship with the outgoing min

I think we all need serious prayers and divine attention in this nation. Opening new Universities is not the best. Infact, most of our present universities does not even stand the test of time. Look at School Like ANATECH. Doing almost all the engineering courses and yet, does not have the neccessary facilities. Let us equip the existing ones. And make the school system more functional. How can somebody spend 4 years in the university For a social science course? How can somebody spend 5-6 years for engineering course? This is is simply because the universities does not have the equipment as a result of that, your first and second year in the university will be wasted doing GES courses, Philosophy, Sociology, Logic and so own when the main course have not been touched. If student spend less years in school, that will increase the yearly intake.

Obasanjo on Atiku: I Dey Laugh O!
•Shema: He is just one of the aspirants, •Ayu endorses former vice-president
From Imam Imam in Lagos and Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja, 11.25.2010
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was his humorous, even comical self yesterday when approached by journalists to respond to the emergence of his former deputy, ex-Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as the Northern Consensus Candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential race.

Obasanjo was at the Presidential Villa, Abuja to attend the Council of State meeting over the new national minimum wage.
Confronted by State House correspondents on his response to Atiku, the former president laughed for a long time, wiping his nose and face in the process.

When the news hounds persisted, Obasanjo used an inhaler which he sniffed for a long time.
Then he launched into a mischievous smile, saying “Ah, I dey laugh o!”
Every other question thrown at him elicited answers that did not correspond with the questions before he walked off saying “I am full of joy and I wish you and Nigerians the fullness of joy, I wish you peace and joy always,” folding his flowing agbada dress.

The Consensus Committee of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) had voted to pick Atiku on Monday as the region’s candidate to slug it out at the presidential primary of PDP with President Goodluck Jonathan.

Atiku beat former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, by just one vote. The other two aspirants, Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki and immediate past National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau, trailed them.

There had been no love lost between Obasanjo and Atiku since around 2003. The two were to engage in a bitter supremacy battle towards the end of Obasanjo presidency.

In the end, Atiku was forced out of PDP. He left for the then Action Congress (AC) without resigning as vice-president to contest the 2007 presidential election, which he lost.

Also yesterday, Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema said Atiku was just one of the presidential aspirants and that at the appropriate time, the North would speak on their choice.

Asked of his personal view on the matter, he said that his view does not represent that of the North and that at the due time, the North would speak on the matter.
Further efforts to draw more comments failed.

Also, Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako was adamant in his refusal to talk on the issue. He merely smiled and walked off when he realised it was the issue of Atiku the journalists wanted to broach.

Former Head of State and presidential aspirant of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, when asked of his view on zoning and if his party would adopt it replied, “zoning is a purely PDP affair, but CPC's constituency is the Federal Republic of Nigeria, anybody, anywhere can contest for any office he thinks he can achieve”.

But former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu, initially rumoured to be considering joining the PDP presidential race, has endorsed Atiku’s choice.

He said in a statement last night: “I received with joy the endorsement of my brother and friend, Atiku Abubakar, GCON, by the Consensus Committee of the Northern Political Leaders Forum. His endorsement marks the beginning of the end of tyranny in our political process and a step towards genuine democracy. It also brings to an end the first phase of the struggle to restore honour, integrity and equity in our political process. It clearly indicates, once more, that when dishonourable people assume power in this country and try to abuse their positions, especially by reneging on power-sharing arrangements that have kept this country together, honourable men and women would close ranks and stop them in the interest of the unity, peace and stability of this country.

“I welcome Atiku’s endorsement without reservation and call on all Nigerians to give him their total support to enable him win the PDP primaries and the 2011 general election.”

Meanwhile, Atiku has said the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is tight, but not unexpected.

Atiku told newsmen shortly after meeting with the Kano State Chapter of Atiku Campaign Organisation in Abuja that notwithstanding the “very tight” schedule of the timetable, INEC had to work very hard to ensure that the constitution was not compromised and that the credibility of the process and the integrity of the electoral body was assured.

“The INEC like the parties are operating a very tight schedule. But they need to work extremely hard to ensure that the sanctity of the constitution is not compromised and that the electoral process is credible, free and fair to give Nigerians an opportunity to decide who their leaders will be in 2011,” he said.

He called for vigilance on the part of Nigerians to ensure that the process of electing the nation’s leaders come 2011 is truly credible, free and fair.

“It is important for Nigerians to be vigilant in order to safe guard their votes and to ensure that the one man or one woman, one vote commitment of the government is not just a mantra,” he said.

Earlier, Atiku had addressed the Kano State delegation led by Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri at the newly unveiled Media Centre of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation.

The sacked Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Professor Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, has instituted a legal action against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), seeking for N3 billion damages.

A letter of originating summons addressed to SEC and obtained exclusively by Daily Sun showed that Okereke-Onyiuke filed the case last Friday at the Federal High Court, Lagos.
In an eight-point claim, Counsel to the plaintiff, Ayo Adesanmi of Wole Olanipekun & Chambers, is seeking for a declaration nullifying the purported removal of the Stock Exchange boss, stating that the purported removal was in utter violation and breach of the provisions of Investments and Securities Act (ISA) which spelt out terms of appointment of the plaintiff and the termination of same.

Announcing the removal of the NSE boss, the Director General of SEC, Ms. Arunma Oteh, said that the Commission’s action was in line with the provisions of the ISA 2007 which according to her lays responsibility for safeguarding the interest of investors on SEC.

“Under the powers vested in the Commission by the ISA, the Commission appointed an interim administrator to manage the day to day affairs and operation of the Exchange. The interim administrator will fill this role until the conclusion of the recruitment and assumption of duty of the substantive DG of the NSE”, Oteh stated.

But Counsel to Okereke-Onyiuke is praying the Court for among others: “A declaration that the purported termination of the appointment of the plaintiff and/or her removal from office as NSE DG vide the defendant’s letters Ref. No. SEC/DG/08/03 of August 4, 2010 and Ref. No. SEC/DG/08/04 of August 5, 2010 respectively titled: Notice of Removal of the NSE DG and your removal from office of the DG of NSE was/is done without compliance with the conditions precedent stipulated and encapsulated in Sections 35(4) & (5), and 308(1) & (2) of the ISA Cap 124 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2007 and therefore, illegal, null and void and of no effect whatsoever and however.”

It also prayed for “A declaration that the defendant, not being the employer and/or appointor of the defendant cannot terminate the appointment of the plaintiff and/or remove her from office in any way or manner contrary or repugnant to her letter or contract of appointment with the NSE dated January 4, 1983, and that the purported removal of the plaintiff from office vide the defendant’s letters is arbitrary, bizarre, unusual, illegal, done malafide, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”

Consequently, the plaintiff’s Counsel sought for an order setting aside the defendant’s letters of reference and an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendant either by itself, officers, agents, servants, privies, or through any person or persons, howsoever from effecting the actions imbedded in the purported letters.

Finally, they are seeking for a sum of N3 billion as damages for the embarrassment, trauma, public ridicule, and humiliation inflicted on the plaintiff by the purported removal from office.

Hundreds of students of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) barricaded the main gate of the institution yesterday, protesting over some irregularities alleged to have been committed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barineme Fakai.

The students who defied the heavy downpour peacefully barred their colleagues and staff from gaining access into the university for several hours.

Their grouse, Daily Trust gathered, was against the Vice Chancellor who they said claimed that use of internet facilities in the institution was free while in reality they paid N6000 each to get internet access. Another allegation against the Vice Chancellor was that contrary to his statement that the scratch card used to access their results and admissions were given to them, each student bought the card at the rate of N6000.

Our correspondent gathered that the immediate cause of the peaceful demonstration was the commissioning, without following due process, of a firm known as CINFOREST, allegedly owned by a son of the VC.

Reacting to the allegations against the VC, the spokesperson of the university, Mr Desmond Wuso, concurred that a token was paid by students for the computer literacy programme approved by the university’s senate. “This programme is only free for staff”, Wosu said, emphasizing that the scratch card is not free anywhere in Nigeria.
