rvp2018: I told you clearly that excess capacity when you're consuming 2,700mw would be something like 300Mw. You'd be happy with 3000MW. But to have 2,000MW excess capacity is beyond crazy. That is why you're spending money enough to finance half Rwanda budget on excess capacity charge - just flushing money down the toilet. you are really dumb here our excess capacity requirement is 1500MW because most of out thermal plants goes on maintenance around the same time. Ghana is not like Kenya with a meagre power consumption. we require more than 3000MW with our current electricity demand By 2021, Ghana electricity consumption will be 4000MW That is how fast our industrialisation policies are taking effect |

rvp2018: We only would be worried if we're importing using forex like USD but regional trade - we are fine. We have positive trade balance with most of the African countries. Let Uganda and Tanzania do maize, eggs and etc. And we will do high-value crops. The main reason Nigeria is very poor is that you don't do basics like regional trade. Now if our trade deficit is 10B - and half it is within Africa - we are fine - and you can come get dollars in Nairobi any day.
Of course, we want to export - but haven't even scratched the domestic market in many things - and then the regional market.
You don't climb a tree from the top.
As of now - no importer in Kenya has ever lacked dollars the last 30yrs. which high value crops? You are spending 5 to 8 billion on food import and you are talking about 1 billion tea and flower export ? dumb dumb All cross border trades are done in forex |

our import data has no problem we have reduced our import bill from 16 billion dollars to 11 billion dollars what is a problem is Kenya import bill it is depressing for a 5 billion export economy. You keep shouting Kenya is the world largest tea exporter as if it is an achievement Meanwhile, Kenya is Africa largest food insecure country just like Somalia and South Sudan. rvp2018: Look at your import data first. Otherwise our tea is doing well annually
enya is the WORLD'S LARGEST TEA EXPORTER.
Its share of global tea exports has SURGED from 6% in 1970 to 22% in 2017.
India's tea exports as a % of Kenya's tea exports have PLUNGED from 476% in 1970 to 56% in 2017.
In the last 47 years, Kenya’s tea exports have grown by 1,012%

Kenyans are losing their jobs on a daily basis in the thousands, joining the already millions that are unemployed and living in slums that abound The kshs is not stable, it is one of the reasons why the Kenyan government has found itself in a huge debt trap. of course importing 18 billion dollars of goods from China and reselling them will give you economic growth except for the fact that it will leave your economy poor and jobless. This is one of the reason why every election year, those hopeless jobless Kenyans kill each other and have to depend on UN intervention rvp2018: Obaboon,
You're talking trade deficit when you're re-exporting aeroplane parts to spain.
Anyway ignoring usual Nigeria data and talking about Kenya.
First Kenya economy is growing at 6% consistently and with currency stability - we are seeing less and less poverty, jobless.Maybe Trade Deficit is not aware of all this.
And 3rd what is Kenya importing.
1) Fuels - refined oil. We have no option. 2) Machinery and capital goods - these are machines from India and China. 3) Vehicles and related.
We are not importing food that much - we have very small deficit in a few groups. And that we fill locally.
We are the only country in Africa that is doing 50-50 trade with Africa. Most of African backwater like Nigeria are doing 95% trade outside Africa...you cannot even trade with Benin except for illegal rice.
So you see - we don't need to worry about dollars - when we are importing maize or cheap Tanzania maize. That is 50% of our trade. We do it with KSHS...which is like the gold standard for the region.
Now because we mostly importing capital goods - machinery and vehicles - and fuel - we are powering our economy,
Which obabaoon explain why KENYA IS DOING VERY well without any minerals or oil or gold or even RAIN. |

I guess we have to place them all into a reeducation program Because their intellectual capacity is fuvked up obaaderemi:
I think the Kenyans are just here to troll and it's ridiculous the kind of things they say here. The thread was fvcked from the beginning but it reached a new low with the kind of Kenyans we have here now. How can an educated person say trade deficits don't matter. It's why the unemployment rate in Kenya is the worst in East Africa and their debts are rising with nothing to show for it. |

rvp2018: We have a better disaster preparedness and bodies...and we have a national welfare system. Unicef and UN agencies are doing there jobs globally. UN and UNICEF work in War thorn countries is Kenya a war thorn country too, because that will be new to me? How come your disaster bodies couldn't help flood victims and it had to take UNICEF ? Youve left the management of your country to UN |

Basically, Kenyans grow what they dont eat Just like how Britain discouraged their colonies from investing in their manufacturing capacity so that Britain can supply them with manufactured goods. Today, if you see any building in Kenya that have huge pillars and colons It is as a result of the Cement glut of Britain in the 40s to 70s. obaaderemi: If you think name calling and childish insults will save you from me, think again.
Now, let me quickly teach you what you don't understand about your trade deficits. Sane Kenyans are complaining about your ridiculous trade deficits but Obviously you are not one of those who are sane. The trade deficits are the reason why you are mostly jobless in Kenya. It reflects the fact that you import basic stuff you can make yourself. Your staples for example, maize and vegetable oil are imported. Your farmers are encouraged by IMF to plant tea and other cash crops while your people starve. What's wrong with growing food crops to feed your starving people? Look at what Nigeria did with rice and cassava. Now your agriculture is suffering due to droughts and locusts. Even prices are falling for tea and demand is down. Your tourism is suffering due to alshabab attacks. You now rely on remittances from Uganda and other countries as sources of forex and yet you claim not to have a forex problem.
I wonder how you are still surviving in Kenya. I guess the answer are the Chinese loans. You claim to have a robust domestic market but retail and trade are struggling. Stores are closing furiously. Examples are nakumatt and uchumi. Your retail sector is worth anything from $15bn to $25bn. Even Ghana with 30m people does better. Those deficits are the reason you are jobless. Winter is coming and you need to get your ass away from nairaland and make yourself useful. All hands in Kenya should be on deck now. |

Except im not talking about system losses Im referring to loss of generation capacity because of maintenance Secondly I'm referring to to the fastest energy demand growth in the whole of Africa. Ghana has not paid for excess capacity since 2018 Kenya's lack of generation capacity and dilapidated power infrastructure is what is making Kenya power run into huge debt. WHy would Kenya be so dumb to build Pylon on watercourses such that a whole pylon collapsed ? rvp2018: Hobbit, these things are already worked out. I think recommended idle or excess capacity everywhere to deal with such issues is around 10% - and system losses maybe another 10% - Not 50%.
As for your politics - here is more politics. With capacity that’s almost double the country’s peak demand needs, Ghana’s electricity utility has to pay independent producers about $450 million every year for energy that it doesn’t need or use. This adds to the sector’s liabilities, which are the biggest debt threat to a nation that seven months ago completed its 16th bailout program with the International Monetary Fund. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-08/how-having-too-much-energy-creates-a-debt-problem-for-ghana |

0.5m people being paid below living wages that is terribly poor Whiles you can help ingenious citizens set up local manufacturing capacity like it is done in Ghana, SA and Nigeria that reduces reliance on import This creates a lot of quality jobs and a whole chain of economic subgroups that creates over 4 million jobs in the value chain for citizens. Import reliance will make Kenyans poor forever That is how Britain created your economy and it has remained so. rvp2018: Obaboon, I think that has been your name for over a year. I don't normally get angry for that long. Anyway moving swiftly - Kenya trade deficit is now 10B dollars plus - and we are NOT complaining. The trade deficit is a problem only if you start having forex problems like Nigeria and Ghana (more like always). It has nothing to do with jobs. Kenya jobless has everything to do with it's third-world economy - just like all the rest of Sub-Sahara Africa. You can have positive trade surplus like Nigeria by merely exporting OIl - and that will mean nearly zero employment - except in few enclaves of port harcourt. or well you can get 1.5B dollars from tea by engaging 0.5M people. Have 1.5B from tourism by engaging 0.2M people.
Those are the things that employ people. You can have robust domestic marekt - like kenya formalizing retail and trade - that start generating very good jobs - in the entire value chain - and you haven't exported anything. |

obaaderemi: You started your day by throwing insults. Guess you are still hurting. Anyway, your trade deficits are the reason why you are mostly jobless in Kenya. Any good student of economics should know that. And it's also why your debt is proportionally high! even a class 2 kid knows the above This is the very reason why USA is in bitter fight with China to bring production back home. Trade deficit will continue to keep Kenyans poor, unemployed and useless |

rvp2018: UNICEF exist everywhere including https://www.unicef.org/ghana/
As for AID - your biggest highway is a donation from US gov - the GEORGE WALKER BUSH highway - you add to include all his 3 names.
You're normally under IMF benevolences.
Ghana is HIPC - poor country to be pitied and - has had 3.5B dollars of loan FORGIVEN. Nigeria has had 18B dollar forgiven. except in Ghana, UNICEF is not a disaster relief Authority when we have disasters, NADMO takes care of the victims. Your country had small floods and it was busy running to UNICEF for aid That is how useless your country is Ghana's biggest highway is the Tema Motorway MCA is not a donation |

Mid term budget statement are political comments in an attempt to undermine the achievements of previous governments. In any given year from henceforth as a recommendation from the Technocrats Ghana is expected to keep power generation surplus of 1500MW as reserve as Thermal plants makes up the majority of our generation unit. Thermal plants require regular maintenance every 3 - 5 months, having those back ups makes us immune from any form of regular black outs like the ones that happen in Kenya. Kenya power sector is peanut compare to Ghana rvp2018: What hobbit is this kind of logic? Do you just type?
And listen to you mister.
Ghana’s Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta set out the scale of the problem in his mid-year review budget on July 29. He said that the problem posed grave financial risks to Ghana’s economy. This is because the government is carrying legacy debt in the energy sector, which threatens to put a huge strain on its finances. https://theconversation.com/lessons-to-be-learnt-from-ghanas-excess-electricity-shambles-121257 |
