Anton Wilhelm Amo, was a great African philosopher born in 1703, originally from AXIM in Ghana.

At age 4 he was sent to Germany by the Dutch West India Company in 1707 and was presented to Dukes Augustus William & Ludwig Rudolf of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
He was treated as a MEMBER of the family by their father Anthony Ulrich, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Amo was the first African-born person known to have attended a European university.
Amo returned to the University of Halle to lecture in philosophy under the name Antonius Guilelmus Amo Afer. In 1736 he was made a professor.

In 1740 Amo took up a post in philosophy at the University of Jena.

This is our second curriculum transition. In 1980s we dumped the British System for 8-4-4 (American/Canada system) - and transition successfully. We are now dumping 8-4-4 for CBC model (this what progressive nations like Finland are using now).

Wesley Girls’ High School was founded by the wife of the 2nd Methodist Missionary to the Gold Coast, Mrs. Harriet Wrigley in 1836 with 25 girls.

Mind you, the term high school was not there, by then. The main aim for establishing that school was to offer basic education --- for missionary activities.

Her aim was to give the girls basic training in housekeeping and Catechism. Subjects taught included writing, reading, sewing and religious education. Classes were held at the Manse, in the Standfast Hall near the Victoria Park in Cape Coast.

The lady dies and it takes a whooping 43year for the second wife to convert it into a high school --- 43 yrs was for the basic foundation and plans to set the school to a highschool.

However, five months after arrival, Mrs. Wrigley died. It was not until 1837 that an efficient school head in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Waldron took over the running of the school. She administered the school for 43 good year and laid a solid foundation for what was to become the Wesleyan Girls’ School and Training Home. Values such as fortitude, integrity and truthfulness soon become the hallmarks of the products of the school.


43 years down the line, the school was upgraded to a girls highschool with only 20 students. This is the time it gained a highschool status.
Theiracademic ability encouraged the Methodist church to agree to the provision of higher education for girls. Consequently, in 1884, Rev. W.M. Cannell who was then the Headmaster of Mfantsipim School started the Secondary section with 20 girls.


So the school was converted into a secondary in 1884.

it has always been a girls high school whether the term existed then or not.
The British high schools formed in the 1600s and 1700s where all teaching the very same things.
Sewing, house keeping, religious studies, reading and writing

Basically, Kenyans did not have any form of education untill 1900s

Ghana was able to do the same 2 streams some years back when we reformed from 3 years to 4 years and also back from 4 years to 3 years because we had lots of infrastructure at our various secondary schools.

Many of your high school can't manage to have at least 100 students because of lack of staff, poor infrastructure and poor performance..

Kenyan parents will rather send their kids to some far away boarding school and pay through their teeth than to have them in community schools with poor results.

You keep wondering why you society keep failing and so tribalistic .. and it all stem from the fact that your society is not enter mixing and you have not created Equity for all and you have failed at providing equal opportunities for all.

This is what Ghana thrives at and that is why our HDI is far higher than yours.
Inter mixing brilliant students from Montessori with those from public primary create room for better co learning environment and poor students manage to thrive.

We've done this with all our top schools, push 30% of poor performing students to them and by the time their 3 years is over, those 30% all become brilliant students and masters of their craft.

First you need to understand that current focus on boarding school is not right.
Then walk the journey to reconfigure your messed up education system
It wont be easy - it will take time to have good standard equal education in every village.
But it can be done.
Kenya is already at 70% day school; with only 30% boarding school;
There is still huge infrastructure mismatch btw day and boarding; but fact that gov fundeds 100% day school is great incentive.
We also const dev fund and other funds for building school infrastracture.
What remain is to come up with standard school package - that every school should at minimum have - and the extras people should be free to get them.
What would be a standard day school look like that provide quality education to kids at walking distance from their homes.
That should be the goal.
But Ghana you're still building huge model boarding secondary schools.

Just imagine instead of providing quality education - you're feeding kids - who can be fed at their homes.

Parents dont want you to feed their kids - they want you to provide excellent teachers, excellent teaching and non-teaching opportunities at schools, like in any elite school. If those schools are available in walking distance - who will take their kids 200 kilometres away?

The problem with putting kids in community high school that are day school is that you end up with kids that are unexposed and remain in their small cocoons knowing nothing and the school is usually Empty with low enrollment.
They usually have poor academic because they are not exposed

The decision to withdraw students, Saturday Standard has learnt, was reached during the holidays. Last year, the school run without Form Two students.

There were 18 students in Form One and 13 in Form Three. The school had 26 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.

When the school opened for its first term, the 21 students who were to proceed to the next classes failed to show up. Judy Waithira, a parent, said they opted to withdraw their children after eight teachers were moved on grounds of low enrolment.

The parents also cited poor performance in KCSE.

“Low enrolment has been a challenge but we have put in mechanisms to attract more learners this year,” a confident Kamau said.

“The situation is not bad. We expect that by next week, there will be learners in the school,” said Kigumo Deputy Director of Education Paul Kigaya.

Boarding school will always remain superior to these kinds of results.... You have kids from the best rich international schools, ministers children, MPs children and kids from poor village schools all meeting in the same high school. This create Equity and Equality on the same baseline to receive the same Quality education in Ghana.

I am not disputing HDI - but of course its not only or most important measure of development. HDI is UN (UNDP) take on human development - it has nothing on infrastructure or real estate or etc. That is why this thread continues every day. There are thousands of indicators of progress including PICTURE TEST.

The first secondary School in Nigeria was established in 1859, the oldest in Kenya came about half a century later. So, I can't discuss such lofty things with you.

It's the way to go. Lots of advantages in having the boarding system. Ghana if we'd be serious, do school farms to feed the students, harvest their toilets for biogas to cook their meals, electricity, procure school cloth/materials locally, feed the students with local produce etc etc imagine the contribution the 'school economy' would add to our economy?

Most of the schools are already producing biogas from the human waste that is produced... Currently, no secondary school has less than 2,000 students on campus. That's a lot of human waste.
These schools used to procure their various uniforms and house wears locally, I have no idea when some of them started procuring from China (they need to be reigned back into local procurement)
They've been feeding them local rice for sometime now ( thank goodness from next year they'll have no option than to procure every food stuff locally).

That is a huge boost to the economy.

What about the large 'school economy ' that the boarding school system creates where there's a large market of/for consumers/producers of school furniture, books, teachers, administrators, cloth sellers, food sellers, carpenters, etc etc?

I've been saying Ghana should even increase her boarding schools to take maximum 3000 students. Day schools should do 1,500. We should build storey buildings/high rises to accomodate the extra numbers

Anywhere schools especially boarding schools are established, the local economies of these places also flourish. Add to that the extras of academic excellence, discipline, no to and fro transport costs etc and you'd see boarding has lots of pluses

Even all the 80 day senior high school are being converted into boarding schools to make it possible for students and teachers to stay on campus

We have in Kenya worked on all the efficiency you can think about in boarding schools.
Nearly all kenya boarding schools are Single Gender because of performance and such.
They began as mostly mixed - then during our time - almost all were converted to Single Boarding.
I think you can count with one hand mixed boarding in kenya.
99% are single gender.
They dont work.
They are expensive , disruptive, unnatural and we dont need it.
We have worked on all the hardwork, crazy hours, putting kids through military style boarding, and results isnt pleasing.
Kids should stay at home with their parents.
We should provide same standards of schooling at the village as with Nairobi.
Same quality teachers. Same quality labs.

Kenya kids wake up earliest 3am - latest 5am - in my school we woke up 4:45am - you have 15 minutes to shower and show up in dinning hall - by 5:15 am we are in class - sometimes lesson start as early as 6am; We have tea break of 30mins at 10; then 1hr lunch break; classes until 5pm; then 1hour sports break; 30mins for super; 7 am sharp - back to class - until 10. You walk to dormitory and prepare to sleep - by 11pm.

Day schools kids do the same - they are out by 5am - including primary.

Nobody in Africa studies like kenya kids.

I don't dispute it. Why would I? They are supposed to be far ahead with their gold, aluminum, arable land, river volta and name it. They should be up there with Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. But Ghana and Kenya have the same level - HDI wise - kenya is slightly behind but the same league.

Funny enough the least thing we were all thinking about in high school was how we were going to get the best grades in a highly competitive educational system that we had and not sex.

I guess you were busy thinking about sex and that is why you ended up poorly educated.

Kenya usually poorly implement stuff and that is why your kids are busily sex active in high school and even on campus.

In Ghana, by 6.30am, everyone has left the boarding house.
From 6.30 to 7am is quiet time before classes begins at 7.30am
9.00am you go for breakfast in the dinning hall
12.00pm you go for lunch
School closed at 3pm

By 3.30pm is quiet time at the dormitory because people are expected to be taking a nap and if you don't want to, you can go and play football or some other sport away from the dormitory.

By 5.30pm everyone is expected to have finished bathing and left the dormitory.
6.00pm is supper time at the dinning hall.

By 7pm which is siesta time, everyone is supposed to be in the classroom learning on their own.
9.00pm siesta is over by 9.30pm everyone should be in their various dorms and certain houses in the dorms choose random times to run roll calls, if you're not in your dorm by roll call and have no real reason why you missed roll call, suspension.
10pm lights are put out in the dormitories by the seniors.

If you want to learn throughout the night you can head to the nearest classroom block by your dormitory.

Kenya began from there - but we long realized it horrible decision - with kids burning schools, becoming gay (most of them are same sex boarding school), name them, they pick all the wrong things; get stressed, bullied, beaten; while they should be with their parents; and it expensive to house and feed them.
Kenya is moving away from this - and now 70% of all secondary schools are day school.
Gov is encouraging day school by ensuring those who choose to go to day are 100% funded.
Those that go to boarding school - have to pay for their boarding - gov will only pay their tuition.

According to the report, boarding facilities will be reserved for a few institutions that will
admit learners across the country to pursue various pathways in senior secondary schools as
envisioned under the new system. Using this model, learners will spend two years in pre-primary
education, six in primary, three in junior secondary, three in senior secondary school and another
three in university (tertiary institution), dubbed 2-6-3-3-3 education system. All children leaving
Grade Six, at the end of primary education, will be required to enroll in a nearby secondary school
for the three-year junior secondary education (Grades 7, 8 and 9), which will be domiciled at the
high school level. Students will be required to enroll in secondary schools within a radius of about
five kilometers from their place of residence. The recommendation was based on the understanding
that most primary schools have a nearby secondary school, making it easier to transition children
to available spaces in adjacent facilities.

Now it's Ghanaian and it is an important part of our education. We will keep it because it does more good for us.

65% of high schools here are mixed sex schools

Theres no way someone in Accra who has had all his schooling in Accra, choose a High school in Accra again... Theyll mostly choose high schools in Cape Coast or somewhere in the Eastern Region or the Ashanti Region.

Kumasi people usually prefer Accra, Eastern, Cape Coast or Western Region high schools and the same goes for kids in Northern Ghana.

Everyone parents sleep knowing that their kids are in better hands here.


Why are kids in Kenya single sex schools thinking about what gender they are, when they should be focusing on learning?
Meanwhile in Ghana, single sex schools turn to produce the best results.

Some of the greatest challenge with kids here has to do with whether they want a single sex school or a mixed sex schools.
The other has to do with which region they want to attend school in.

No wonder you Kenyans are always fighting, you really hadn't taken your time to foster national unity.
