rvp20182: They are heading to 200 - if CEDIS drop to 18 by year end - a real possibility - from 6 at start of the year. I like the way you like to project the fear of Kenyans on us but our inflation is 40% and the retail prices here are still far lower than in Kenya.. Kenyans are the one who can't even afford food... By year end when Ruto start slapping you guys with various cost increments because of IMF, you'll cry more. |

This have no bearing on living wages which is what the market pays.. 6 - 10 dollars is the living wage in Ghana... Cleaners, house helps gardeners, labourers all get that. |

Mkenya2019: Generally speaking protection of infant industries should be time limited; otherwise Nigeria blanket timeless protection of infant industries aka import substitution is failed policy that breeds poverty.
Now imagine with Nigeria being part of say Ecowas and soon AFCTA - how will they protect their rice farmers from cheaper African rice?Perhaps they can ask for exemption - but for few years - so already this is not sustainable - unless you engage in Buhari type blockade of all trade.
And if you must protect local industry (only for x yrs as local industry build competitiveness) - it surely has to be something complicated - not rice or maize - that you can raise productivity easily. African rice from where? Apart from Ghana and Nigeria that currently produce as much rice to meet their consumption.... Which other African country can meet their own consumption? Try exporting soybeans to the US and see Ghana will ban importation of rice from next year because we have met our consumption. |

Mkenya2019: You've started lying mad cow. VRA is a loss making entity - 9 yrs in a row. It revenues was 700M dollar last year. It made profit of 1 million dollar - the 1st in 9yrs. It generates only 2,500MW - ----------------just mere 500MW higher than Kengen. It has not borrowed 13 billion. Of 2500MW - 1000MW was generated by Kwame in 1960s - before he went bankrupt. Now apart from Bui dam - the rest are small things that should not bankrupt you. They are in fact thermal power plant -
Kengen is building power gen every year without forcing us to incur anything. It has clean balance sheet and can stand on it's own.
This VRA is chicken coup that should not bankrupt anyone.
The last decade the only major thing they did is mere 250Mw thermal gas. Kenya Humprey built similar plant in Mozambique from his own money.
VRA Installed Generation Capacity
Plant Installed Capacity (MW) Type of Plant Fuel Type Year Installed Akosombo GS 1,020 Hydro Water 1965 Kpong GS 160 Hydro Water 1982 TAPCO ( T1) 330 Thermal Gas/LCO 1997 TICO (T2) 340 Thermal Gas/LCO 2001 Tema Thermal 1 Plant (TT1PP) 110 Thermal Gas/LCO 2009 Tema Thermal 2 Plant (TT2PP) 80 Thermal Gas 2010 Kpone Thermal Power Station (KTPS) 220 Thermal Gas/Diesel 2016 Ameri Power Plant 250 Thermal Gas 2016 Navrongo Solar Plant 2.5 Renewable Solar 2013 Lawra Solar Plant 6.5 Renewable Solar 2020 Kaleo Solar Plant 13 Renewable Solar 2021 TOTAL CAPACITY 2,532 running away from the conversation as usual..... When kengen can even borrow 100 million dollars, let's talk. We don't compare watermelons to limes Even kengen can't be compared to BUI power authority alone with a revenue flow of 106 million dollars because Bui power authority is more valuable than kengen. |

rvp2018: Gov job is not do business. That is just communist hangover that kwame Nkrumah infected you. Ghana gov job is to build roads and such...pay Ghana teachers better than crap you pay...pay police better. Why are you investing in VRA directly - why cant they not borrow on the strength of their assets. Kengen in kenya - borrow to build dams - and kenya treasury doesnt care - unless the creditor ask for a treasury gurantee. Even SGR is really loan by Kenya Railways - but of course that one has public gurantee. Kenya Railways should be able to borrow using their assets - they own huge prime lands for example. SOES unless debt is publicly guaranteed we are not obligated to save an SOE that goes down. We leave it to creditors to sell it. who says to invest in companies you own VRA is capable of borrowing 2,3 to7 billion dollars on the strength of it asset but not 13 billion dollars at the time it was immediately needed. We are investing in VRA directly because VRA is a huge company that bring 6 billion dollars in revenue and it will be foolish to not invest in it but rather go invest in some public or private company in London of Switzerland that brings in very little on the investment. Kengen borrowing 20 million and 30 million dollars is not the same as VRA borrowing 4 billion dollars. Watermelon and limes are not the same in size Expect Kenya railways is valueless because it can't even break even so every year it pile on more debt for your govt. |

rvp2018: I gave one example. Kenya gov has definitely borrowed more than poor Ghana. We borrowed 35Billion externally - 45B internally - so when it come scale you're not there. And we dont factor borrowing from SOES - because SOES do their own thing - they borrow from kenya banks, foreign banks, or do right issues or sell their own bonds.
Unless kenya gov gurantees that debt.
Now for you - Ghana borrows - Worl bank gurantees- then you claim the money is for SOES?
The image I am getting is a primitive economy that you have in Ghana Naa Ghana does not borrow uselessly like that. You must have something to show for that huge borrowing and not just a loss making SGR.. Well according to the WB, you have to factor in SOE borrowings because your government becomes liable when they default. This is the reason why you're at the IMF because your SOE debts brings your total debt to 105 billion dollars. Ghana 54 billion dollars debt include all 101 SOE debts and the greatest holders of the debt are GNPC, Ghana Gas, Explorco, VRA and etc... All of which are companies flush with cash and are capable of paying the debt. None has defaulted on their obligations. Various development that relief Ghana with 3 billion dollars hard cash yearly to be spent in other areas instead of outside the economy. |
