Politics / Female Suicide Bombers Kill Dozens In Cameroon, Nigeria by juventino: 7:26pm On Jul 26, 2015
A 12-year-old girl suicide bomber killed 20 people in an attack on a bar in Maroua in Cameroon, while in a crowded market in neighbouring Nigeria a “mentally handicapped” female attacker killed 14.
The child bomber blew herself up among Saturday night revellers in the popular bar, injuring at least 79 others, Cameroonian state TV reported on Sunday.
Early Sunday in the northeastern Nigerian town of Damaturu, a woman described by locals as “mentally unstable” detonated herself at the entrance of a market, trader Garba Abdullahi told AFP.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either bombing, but Nigeriaand increasingly Cameroon have suffered repeated attacks by Boko Haram extremists, including a recent string of suicide attacks by women and girls.
The Islamists, whose six-year insurgency and efforts to quell it have left at least 15,000 dead, have recently stepped up their attacks in the restive Lake Chad region despite a major regional offensive.
Cameroon’s army has joined the campaign against Boko Haram after a series of deadly cross-border raids into its territory.
The insurgents have abducted thousands of people, including hundreds of women and girls, in the past two years, rights groups say.
The former commercial hub of Maroua in northern Cameroon was already reeling after 13 people were killed in twin suicide bombings by two teenage girls on Wednesday in a central market and in a nearby neighbourhood.
Violence returned on Saturday night to the town, which has been under heavy security for months as the threat from Boko Haram has grown.
“A girl of around 12 blew herself up between two takeaway sales points. Security forces have sealed off the area and have made several arrests,” state TV said.
Saturday’s was the fifth suicide attack to hit Cameroon in two weeks.
A resident told of “a loud explosion”, saying there had been an attack at the Boucan bar, a large and popular nightspot.
“There’s panic,” he said.
Motorbikes, which the insurgents often use to stage their raids, are banned in Maroua after dark, and several regions of Cameroon have prohibited the use of the full Islamic veil as they seek to curb the threat from female suicide bombers.

– Wave of violence –

In Damaturu in Nigeria, witnesses and hospital sources described the tragedy that struck the market area on Sunday.
“Today is the market day here and at 9:50 (0850 GMT) this morning, a female suicide bomber blew herself up at the… entrance of the market where commuters were arriving,” trader Abdullahi told AFP.
“We evacuated 15 dead bodies to the hospital, including the suicide bomber who was identified as a mentally unstable woman that had been known for years in the area,” he said, adding that the attacker was around 40 years old.
The death toll was confirmed by a nurse from a local hospital, who added that 47 people with injuries — many of them critical — had been admitted.
“Eight of the dead are women. One of them, from all the indications, was the suicide bomber,” added the nurse from the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, who requested anonymity.
Dumaturu was the scene of a triple suicide bombing on July 18 when three girls blew themselves up killing at least 13 people as residents prepared for the Muslim Eid festival marking the end of Ramadan.
The town is the capital of Yobe state which, along with the other northeastern states of Borno and Adamawa, has been the worst hit by Boko Haram’s bloody campaign for a hardline Islamic caliphate, which has left 1.5 million people homeless since 2009.
A new wave of violence has claimed 800 lives since Nigeria‘s President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in May vowing to crush the insurgency

Politics / What Tompolo, MEND Leaders Will Discuss As They Regroup In Bayelsa by juventino: 6:42am On Jul 24, 2015
WARRI—LEADER of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND and High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, yesterday, summoned commanders and leaders of the various wings of the militant group to an emergency meeting, tomorrow in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
He did not state agenda of the meeting, but Tompolo, who is the Ibe-Ebidouwei of Ijaw nation, in the invitation, said the meeting, which will hold at Izon House, Yenagoa, was important.
His words, “My dearly beloved Commanders and Leaders of various wings of the Movement of the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, I greet you all. It is my pleasure to humbly invite you to a very crucial and urgent meeting.”
A source told Vanguard, “The place of the Niger Delta in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and appraisal of the former President Goodluck Jonathan government in view of the current happenings in the country will be tabled for discussion at the meeting. The meeting is restricted only to those invited, it is not an all comers meeting, we will make our position known after the meeting.”
...Militants
File: Niger Delta Militants
Tompolo and other ex-militant leaders officially disbanded MEND after they accepted amnesty offered them by the administration of former President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2009.
But, a faction of MEND, which did not accept amnesty continued to operate the militant group and stated their disapproval of Jonathan government, but it was obvious that the moving forces behind the group had abandoned it.
Tomorrow’s meeting is the first time all the former commanders and leaders of the militant group are meeting formally since it was disbanded in 2009.

Okay. Pardon me I didn't read the article. But from the tone of the op and knowing his political leanings, I can rightly guess the figure represents an increase from what it used to be.

A little math here wouldn't hurt I suppose.

If we are spending approximately N1.6b daily, it means we would spend N584billion by the end of the year.

Now, since this represents an upsurge, it means we must have been paying less in the past, yet Jonathan spent over N2.0trillion on the same item in 1year!!

....And they call him a hero. grin

That dude is a freaking Ali Baba!! We know who the other 40 ##ieves are. grin

Politics / 32 Boko Haram Fighters, 16 Niger Villagers Killed In Counter Attack In Niger by juventino: 6:45pm On Jul 18, 2015
Boko Haram jihadists killed 16 civilians in an attack this week on a southeast Niger village, near the Nigerian border, a local official said Saturday. “On July 15, Boko Haram elements fired on locals who were praying in a village near the town of Bosso,” said Bako Mamadou, mayor of Bosso, a town in southeast Niger on the border with Nigeria, where the armed Islamist group originated.
“They killed 15 people on the spot and another person succumbed later to their wounds,” Mamadou said on state television. According to the Bosso mayor, four others were injured in the attack. Meanwhile the Niger army said Saturday it had killed 32 Boko Haram fighters from July 15-17 during “sweeping up” operations following the July 15 attack by “Boko Haram elements”.
The defence ministry added that three Islamist fighters were taken into custody, adding that Chadian soldiers also took part in the operation. Nigeria and Niger, along with Chad and Cameroon, have launched a joint offensive to end Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency, which has claimed at least 15,000 lives and caused about 1.5 million people to flee their homes.
There has been a recent spate of Boko Haram attacks in Niger’s southeast Diffa region following weeks of relative calm. The upsurge in attacks on civilians comes after the four-nation coalition pushed the militants out of territory they had seized in northeast Nigeria.

The difference between Jonathan and Obasanjo?

One, after serving his tenure, has simply returned to his quiet life, accepting the will of the masses and understanding that politics is not worth the blood of the masses. He may have his shortcomings (which he never denied), but he understands the reality on ground that taking cheap shots at your successor's flaws is not a sign of superiority. He has simply wished the country success and moved on with his life.

...And the other?
Despite the numerous big fraud scandals that can be traced DIRECTLY to his name (Halliburton, Siemens, missing oil vessels, Econet scam, National Library scam) this old but immature gorilla has still refused to leave the podium and act like a decent statesman. The same fool behind the blatant electoral frauds in 2003 and 2007 never missed a chance to take cheap shots at his successor like he could ever hold a candle against them.
The same creature under whose administration Sharia was legalized in a secular country, had the audacity to come in front of a camera and rip his party membership card apart, all to the morronic applause from the ever gullible simpletons known as masses.
The same "do or die" politician has refused to respect the wrinkles on his fat, ugly, saggy body and go take a rest for good.
Whispers from the grapevine even suggest he's fielding some personal candidates for appointment under the new government.

Sports / Liverpool Sign Barcelona Starlet Bobby Adekanye by juventino: 6:03pm On Jul 03, 2015
PREMIER LEAGUE

Liverpool have swooped to sign 16-year-old winger Bobby Adekanye from Barcelona on a free transfer.

Adekanye was banned for playing for Barcelona after FIFA ruled the club had broken its youth transfer regulations in order to sign him and imposed a year-long transfer ban as a result.

Subsequently Adekanye joined PSV on loan but now Liverpool have moved ahead of the Dutch side and Eredivisie rivals Ajax to sign the starlet.

“I am very happy to sign for Liverpool,” the left-sided player wrote on Instagram page.

Instagram

Adekanye was born in Nigeria but moved to Amsterdam when he was four-years-old.

He arrived at Barcelona from Ajax in 2011 but will now be playing his football in Merseyside.

[James Milner and Danny Ings join Liverpool tour]

FIFA’s stance is Adekanye was signed by Barcelona illegally from Ajax in 2011 when he was 12, something the Catalan giants don’t believe was the case.

A Dutch youth international, Adekayne has been compared in playing style to compatriot Arjen Robben.

He represented the Netherlands in February at the Under 16 UEFA development tournament.

Politics / BREAKING; El Rufai Sues Over False Reports Of Assets Declaration (90bln) by juventino: 12:22pm On Jul 02, 2015
Following earlier reports which swirled around the media today saying governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has publicly declared his assets and is reportedly worth about N90 billion with 40 mansions to his name, the former FCT minister is not finding this funny and has directed his legal team to sue the publishers.
The Union chose to write a spurious story alleging N90b as his assets declaration without seeing the declaration made by Malam El Rufai. The circle of blackmail that did the story claimed they heard a rumour, and they pursued the rumour so vigorously they transformed it into news.

When some of their cohorts made contact with the governor’s media team insisting that they respond to rumour, they were told that it is better if they chose the more legitimate route of agitating for a public asset declaration.

Fair minded people who read the story will notice that it is not grounded in any evidence. It is just the animus of blackmailers who regard Malam Nasir El-Rufai as easy prey. But since his reputation is not based on purchased kudos, he cannot be compelled into accommodation with venal people masquerading as journalists.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai is a privileged Nigerian. He qualified as a chartered Quantity Surveyor early in life and became a dollar millionaire in his twenties. He is a respected leader in in his professional field but as successful as he has been in his career, he certainly has neither N90 billion nor 40 mansions.

He will not be distracted from his total focus on making Kaduna great again. In this endeavour, he will continue to be accessible to practitioners of responsible journalism

ANGRY youths, yesterday, brought commercial activities in markets in Anambra State to a standstill following alleged plan by the Federal Government to transfer suspected Boko Haram prisoners to Ekwulobia Prison in Aguata local government area of the state.
Thousands of the youths blocked major roads in the state, including the Head Bridge and the Enugu Onitsha expressway in Onitsha, as well as the popular Zik Avenue in Awka, causing traffic gridlock for several hours.
Though the protest was peaceful, policemen in Onitsha were later seen firing teargas canisters to disperse the protesters. The security operatives, later joined by soldiers stationed at the Uga junction on Atani Road, were also seen removing the barricades used by the youths to block the roads.
PROTEST: Youths protesting alleged planned relocationn of Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra State in Onitsha yesterday.
PROTEST: Youths protesting alleged planned relocationn of Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra State in Onitsha yesterday.
In all the cities in the state, the youths waved placards with inscriptions that read, “We don’t want Boko Haram prisoners in Anambra”; “Buhari, Igbos will not accept your prisoners”; “Anambra is special and secured”; “Anambra is not a party to terrorists and should not be involved in it”; “We say no to Boko Haram people in Anambra” and “Buhari, why Anambra”.
At the Ekwulobia Prison, which was named as the likely new abode for the Boko Haram prisoners, there was nothing on ground to show that a large number of inmates were brought in there. Some officials of the prison however said that they heard a rumour that some prisoners from the northern part of the country would be brought there.
According to them, “there was nothing on ground to show that new inmates were being expected as the situation here has not changed.”
President General of Anambra Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, AMATAS, Dr. Okwudili Ezenwankwo, who addressed reporters in Onitsha, said they had from a very reliable source that plans had been concluded to bring suspected Boko Haram prisoners to the state, adding that they would do everything within their power to resist it.
Pressed to say how they got information that such prisoners were to be brought to the state, Ezenwankwo said: “We have our ears on ground and that is the much we can say for now. We were informed that federal government wants to transfer the Boko Haram to Anambra State and this is unacceptable to us.
“If you visit the Ekwulobia Prison, you will discover that something is going on there. We are not against President Muhammadu Buhari, but we want him to keep these special prisoners where they belong.
“We know our president is a good man and he will not do anything that will cause insecurity in this part of the country to add to the existing one caused by Boko Haram insurgents. Anambra is peaceful and we don’t want Boko Haram to come and cause confusion.”
According to Ezenwankwo, Anambra traders have already brought the matter to the attention of Governor Willie Obiano, adding that the governor was mandated by the traders to take their protest over the matter to President Buhari.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Uche Eze, said the situation was properly handled because the police was on top of the situation.

Politics / Aregbesola Will Not Sell Helicopter To Pay Workers — APC by juventino: 2:09pm On Jun 23, 2015
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Osun State, Mr. Gboyega Famodun, has reiterated that the governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola will not sell the state helicopter to pay salaries of public workers.
Public outcry has greeted the inability of Aregbesola to pay workers in the state since 2014 while the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged him to sell the helicopter in order to reduce cost and upset some of the bills.
However, during a press conference in Osogbo on Monday, Famodun, described the PDP as ignorant.

“On the question of helicopter, the opposition recently gave an unsolicited advice to the state government, asking it to sell its surveillance helicopter. It was an uninformed call. You will all recall the spate of armed banditry in the state prior to our coming.
“The helicopter cost N500m and it was paid for in five instalments. With these measures in place, you now know the difference. However, the helicopter was practically disabled by the Federal Government itself.
“Before the surveillance machine was bought, the governor built a state-of-the-art Call Centre that was to operate with a special security code. The FG-controlled NCC refused till today to provide the special code for the helicopter to be linked with ground equipment for surveillance. Thus the surveillance helicopter was effectively disabled.
“The chopper was however put on lease and it is making money for the state and only recalled for use as the need arises. It is one of the sound financial decisions made by the government. We cannot but marvel at the ignorance and mischief of those calling for the sale of the helicopter and the quality of the thinking of those asking government to dispose of an instrument being used for the security of the citizens,” he said.

Politics / Aregbesola Promises To Pay Workers Before June Ends - Punch by juventino: 5:42pm On Jun 14, 2015
Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has promised to pay workers in the state their salaries before the end of this month.

The governor made the promise in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon.

Most workers are being owed seven month salaries but the statement is silent on whether the governor would pay the backlog or he would pay part of the salaries.

The statement read in part, “Before the end of June, workers would be paid their salaries.”

The governor stated that he had a great dream for the state and that was why he was in a hurry to begin many programmes which had earned him applause even outside the country.

He said further, “The dream has not gone awry and it is a clear vision that Osun must be on its feet, self-reliant and be a reference point in Nigeria. The race to ensure development within the first term of Aregbesola was informed by the fear of what is happening now.

“Aregbesola wanted an Osun that is self-reliant. That Osun, almost two decades after its creation, could not boast of tax-paying companies speaks volume about the magnitude of the works that awaited the Aregbesola administration.

“But he did not shy away from this task of industrialisation. Within his first term, his government had caused investors to bring up companies such as the Omoluabi Garment Factory, Osogbo, Adulawo/RLG Technology company in Ilesa.

“Just last month, a leading telephone line company, Airtel, came to establish partnership with the Adulawo/RLG company. These are aside the various agro-allied companies which have benefited from the growth schemes of the Aregbesola administration throughout the state.

“The government has also commenced aggressive drive for the development of the solid mineral sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with an Australian mining firm, Andalusian Mining Industry.

“It was in the same vein that the idea of an airport for aircraft maintenance was conceived.

“Only a lazy administration would accept the tag of Osun as a “civil servant” state as excuse for not developing initiatives for industrialisation.

“To accept that our state must continue to survive on the meagre inflow through what goes to the civil servants alone is to accept that we would continue to depend on external forces for our survival.

“We must work hard to give our people many choices. If you want to work in the civil service, it must be the choice that our people make on their own volition and not that there are no other choices regardless of their education, qualifications and expertise.”

“People must not forget that Lagos, in 1999 when former Governor Bola Tinubu took over, was generating a paltry sum. It was the ingenious interventions and immediate provisions of infrastructure that lured investors in to create various opportunities for the people and made tax administration much easier for what is now today’s Lagos. This feat can be repeated in Osun and other parts of Nigeria.”
