Net Applications monitors over 40,000 websites to check the traffic from mobile devices and has found out that 44.62% of users are on Android whereas 44.19% of the users are on iOS (the rest taken by other mobile platforms). But while Android has a slightly greater percentage in this case, when you take into account that iOS has far fewer people actually using the OS compared to the total number of Android users, you can conclude that a greater percentage of all iOS users spend time browsing the web on their devices than their Android counterparts, as much as seven times more. The reason for this is not too complicated. It has been said repeatedly that a majority of the Android marketshare consists of cheap smartphones, bought by people who are looking for something affordable and are likely not tech or net savvy. iOS devices, on the other hand, are exclusively high-end devices, where the users are far more likely to be aware of the internet and are thus using it more often. This is not too different from the metrics for app purchases as well, and explains why developers and advertisers prefer to target iOS more. But with Android now pushing ahead due to sheer market share numbers, there are now more Android users online, even if it is just a small fraction of the total number of Android users. http://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2014/08/03/ios-users-seven-times-more-active-than-android-users-suggests-net-applications/

Gaza City: The Israeli military offensive in Gaza has so far resulted into the deaths of more than 500 people. Israeli soldiers are dropping white phosphorous bombs – known to induce cancer in humans on Gazans. Israel had earlier banned weapons, including uranium and white phosphorous, but the aerial and ground forces are now using them to pound Palestinian civilians. Considered as banned weapons, these bombs have violated all international conventions. Daily Bhaskar brings you 10 facts that will help you understand Israel-Gaza conflict: 1. Gaza and West Bank are two separate geographical entities of Palestine. Earlier, Gaza was part of Egypt, which shares its border with the Palestinian territory on the west. 2. Israel invaded Egypt in 1967 and got full control over Gaza Strip. It continued its occupation on Gaza till 2005. West Bank was already under Israel's control. 3. In 2005, Israel, under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, reached an agreement with the Palestinian Authority and withdrew its civilian and military presence from the Gaza Strip but retained control over the Gaza airspace, maritime access and borders even with Egypt. The Palestinian Authority was governed from Ramallah in West Bank by Fatah party. As per the agreement, Israel continued to patrol and monitor the external land perimeter of the Gaza Strip, with the exception of its southernmost border (where Egypt retained control of the border and border crossings were supervised by European monitors). It also continued to monitor and blockade Gaza's coastline. 4. Soon after Israel withdrew from Gaza, Hamas, a political outfit that doesn't recognize Israel, emerged as a dominant power in the area. 5. When Hamas won the January 2006 Palestinian legislative election, gaining a majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council, the conflict between Israel and Gaza intensified. The conflict escalated with the split of the Palestinian Authority to Fatah government in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza and the following violent ousting of Fatah. Palestinians continued shooting Qassam rockets at Israeli settlements located near the Gaza borders and staged cross-border raids aimed at killing or capturing Israeli soldiers. Israel says its air as well as ground attacks are intended to stop rocket fire on its borders by Hamas and destroy Palestinian militants' tunnels. 6. Israel borders Gaza on three sides. It sealed its border with the Gaza Strip, largely preventing free flow of people and many imports and exports. No one, even politicians of powerful countries, can enter Gaza without permission of Israel. In short, Gaza has no access to the rest of the world. 7. There are several Israeli checkpoints in Gaza. Essential commodities like food items, milk and medicines have to cross these check points. Gazans have to pay huge amount to Israeli authorities pass the check points with these goods. 8. Israel does not allow sufficient supplies of food and other essentials items to Gaza. Hospitals here always run short of essential medicines and shops have enough rations. There sufficient supply of gas, petrol and power to Gaza. The inflation in Gaza is highest in the world. 9. There is no airport, sea port and even railway station in Gaza. Residents cannot leave Gaza because they don't have passports. In addition, Israel does not allow them to cross its check posts. 10. The United Nations has requested Israel several times to give up its claim on Gaza and stop taking lives of innocent, but it never listens. Flickr | ArneCoomans Research shows that being continually sleep-deprived makes you dumb, irritable, distracted, unhappy, and fat — among other terrible things. But knowing that sleep is necessary, and the science behind why, just makes the feeling of lying awake at 3 a.m. worse. To help the night owls among us get some rest, we gathered the best practices from sleep science. The experts call it "sleep hygiene." Here's a crash course. 1. Get into a bedroom routine. Do the same relaxing things before bed every night — the ritual clues your mind and body that it's time to get to bed. Go-to exercises include hot baths and deep reads, which Bill Gates, Arianna Huffington, and other high-achievers swear by. 2. Arrange your bedroom for maximal sleepability. Sleep to Live Institute director Robert Oexman tells Business Insider that you should keep your room cool (between 65° and 68°F) and dark. Get some blackout curtains if outside lights are an issue. 3. Don't use your phone as an alarm clock. Lots of us rely on our iPhones to wake us up in the morning. The only problem is that if you can't sleep, you'll get the itch to fuss with your phone, which is loaded with app-based stimulants. Don't let that happen to you. "Your bedroom should be reserved for sleep, sex, and nothing else," Oxeman says. "There's no excuse — if your cellphone is your alarm clock, then buy a $5 alarm clock and solve the problem." 4. Practice deep breathing. Putting a little intention into breathing deeply is a way of signaling to your body that it's safe to relax. Family therapist Vikki Stark walks through the technique on Psychology Today: "On the inhale, visualize the clean, fresh air coming into your lungs, traveling around your body and cleansing all your cells. On the exhale, imagine all the toxins and negativity being safely expelled into the atmosphere, leaving your body restored. Focus on this steady, calm inhale-exhale, and I guarantee that you will start to feel more peaceful and relaxed. But it's not going to happen the first time you try it. It's an exercise so you need to practice it to get the best effect. Keep going till you feel your body let go." 5. Relax the muscles in your toes. To release the workday stresses that have made a home in your muscles and tendons, use "progressive muscle relaxation" when you're lying in bed. It's pretty simple: You tense — then release — a muscle group, and then move on to another one. Catherine Darley, director of the Institute of Naturopathic Sleep Medicine in Seattle, advises focusing this progressive relaxation technique on your toes. "Curl your toes tightly for a count of seven, and then relax," she says in Health.com. "Repeat through each muscle group, working up from your toes to your neck." 6. Occupy your mind with a mental exercise. Counting sheep is so last night. The better option: Sleep expert Dr. Vicky Seelall says to try counting backwards from 100 in multiples of three. The rhythm of counting can lull you into a sleepy state, and counting in multiples of three has a bit of a challenge to it, so that you'll actually have to pay attention. 7. Get out of bed. Harneet Walia, a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic's Sleep Disorders Center, says if you can't fall asleep after 30 minutes of lying in bed, you should get up. "You're basically training your body not to sleep in bed, but to lie there and not sleep," Walia tells US News. "And your mind can get conditioned to that." So avoid a screen and do something calm, such as reading a book, listening to music, or even doing the dishes. 8. Get your worries out of your head. If your mind keeps babbling about what might happen tomorrow, next week, or next year, get it out. Walia suggests you try "jotting down all your worries on a piece of paper so it's out of your head," which sounds like good advice, given that "expressive writing" has been found to be an awesome approach to soothing anxiety. 9. Get your alarm clock away from you. One of the worst parts of sleeplessness is the mounting awareness that you're not getting enough sleep. To avoid that, exile your clock. "No clock watching," Walia says, "That's a big no-no. Turn the clock around." 10. Try visualizing a beautiful experience. If you keep ruminating over something that happened today, occupy your mind elsewhere. Here's a suggestion, care of Cosmo: "Picture yourself in a place that's unrelated to whatever's dominating your thoughts, and focus on the specifics of the scenario ... For example, relive a favorite vacation, such as that trip to Mexico, and call to mind sensory details such as the feel of the water on your skin, the colors of the fish you saw while snorkeling, and the taste of the margaritas you sipped at sunset." The vividness has a helpful side effect: It distracts you from what you'd be thinking of otherwise. 11. Get enough exercise during the day. Your body isn't going to feel the need to rest if you haven't given it any work during the day. "If you're sedentary all day, your sleep will suck," Lifehacker reports. "The more active you are, the better your sleep will be." 12. Get a better pillow. Pillow research (it's a thing) has shown that a medium-firm pillow brings the best improvement to people's sleep. Why? Because a pillow should support your head and neck. Also, Oprah magazine says to pick up a non-allergenic pillow if you think you might be allergic to down. Then get a dust mite protector to keep those mites from messing with you. 13. See a doctor. If sleeplessness is a chronic problem, the experts all recommend talking to a professional. Iraq Christians told to convert or face death Imran Khan Last updated: 3 hours ago Islamic State group tells Christian community in Mosul they face death if they do not embrace Islam or pay tax. The Islamic State group has threatened Christians in the Iraqi city of Mosul with death if they do not to convert to Islam or pay a tax, Al Jazeera has learned. The Sunni rebel group issued the orders in a letter after Friday prayers. The document, obtained by Al Jazeera, states that the order was issued after Christian leaders failed to attend a meeting called by the group. In response, the group says in the letter that Christians must either convert to Islam, pay a special tax on non-Muslims known as jiziya, or face death "as a last resort". Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, was overrun by the Islamic State group and allied rebel groups last month. The Iraqi army units stationed in the city, most of whom were Shia, fled after the group crossed from Syria and attacked the north of Iraq. Before the attack, Mosul's Christian community was estimated at 3,000. Many are believed to have already fled the city as part of an exodus of up to one-third of the population. Churches and Christian-owned shops in the city were reported smashed by those who fled. The Islamic State's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, held a sermon in Mosul's grand mosque two weeks ago, calling on all Muslims to unite behind his group. The Islamic State, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, has issued similar demands in areas in control in Syria, and has posted pictures of Christians being crucified for disobeying orders in Raqqa. Church leaders in Iraq have not responded to the threats officially. Nickolay Mladenov, the head of the UN assistance mission In Iraq, condemned the order. "Any persecution of minorities constitutes a crime against humanity and we urge all sides to protect civilians. We have produced a report listing attacks on civilians and have brought this up at the highest levels of the Iraqi government." http://m.aljazeera.com/index/home |

The tenure of the acting Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Ambrose Mammadi, expired today, a few hours before he was due to inaugurate a seven-member committee to investigate whether Governor Murtala Nyako has committed impeachable offenses. The Adamawa State legislature constituted the panel to look into allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Mr. Nyako. Justice Mamadi, who was expected to swear in the panel tomorrow, began his acting appointment as chief judge on April 7, 2014. His three-month tenure as acting governor expires by midnight today—July 6, 2014 (Nigerian time). A source in Adamawa State told SaharaReporters that it was unclear whether the acting chief judge would go ahead with swearing in the impeachment panel tomorrow. In a curious development, a source told SaharaReporters that a contingent of soldiers had taken positions near and around the acting judge’s official residence. The source said the heavy presence of the military could mean that some interests were pressuring the chief judge to play a role in ensuring that the governor is impeached. But a security source in Yola, the state capital, claimed that the soldiers were posted to the judge’s residence to ensure that he would not be attacked by thugs hired by any of the competing political groups in the state. Governor Nyako, who is serving his second term after his reelection on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Most of the members of the state assembly are PDP faithful. Source: http://saharareporters.com/2014/07/06/tenure-adamawa-state-chief-judge-expires-day-he-was-inaugurate-impeachment-panel |

Researchers at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) have come up with soilless yam propagation as they have successfully grown seed yams in the air using aeroponics technology. The fete is raising hopes and more options for the propagation of virus- and disease-free planting materials. In preliminary trials, Dr Norbert Maroya, Project Manager for the Yam Improvement for Incomes and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA) project at IITA, together with a team of scientists successfully propagated yam by directly planting vine cuttings in Aeroponics System (AS) boxes to produce mini-tubers in the air. Aeroponics System is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or an aggregate medium. The technology is widely used by commercial potato seed producers in eastern Africa – like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Southern Africa like Mozambique, Malawi - but successfully growing yam on aeroponics is a novelty for rapidly multiplying the much needed clean seed yam tubers in large quantities. “With this approach we are optimistic that farmers will begin to have clean seed yams for better harvest,” Dr Maroya said Preliminary results showed that vine rooting in Aeroponics System had at least 95% success rate compared to vine rooting in carbonized rice husk with a maximum rate of 70%. Rooting time was much shorter in aeroponics. Aeroponics is coming at an opportune time for African farmers. Traditionally, seed yam production is expensive and inefficient. Farmers save about 25 to 30% of their harvest for planting the same area in the following season, meaning less money in their pockets. Moreover, these saved seeds are often infested with pathogens that significantly reduce farmers’ yield year after year. However with an established Aeroponics System for seed yam propagation at the premises of an interested private investor, seed company or humanitarian nongovernmental organization; yam producers can have access to clean seed yams. The soilless yam propagation system will increase the productivity of seed and ware yam and effectively reduce diseases and pests incidence and severity (no soilborne or vector-transmitted pests and diseases during the vegetative phase). Dr Robert Asiedu, IITA Director for Western Africa described the results as “impressive.” “Yam is an important crop in Africa and addressing the seeds’ constraint will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of farmers who depend on the crop for their livelihood,” he added. In conducting the aeroponics trial, a special structure was built in an existing screen house with Dixon shelf frames using perforated styrofoam box, as support for plant vines, while the developing roots of the plants in the air were enclosed in conditions of total darkness to simulate the situation of soil to the roots. For the plant and tuber to develop, an automated power house system was established for atomizing periodically nutrient enriched water solution in the form of mist to feed the plants. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/iita-researchers-grow-yam-air/

U.S. officials have, for the first time, spoken of their desire to train moderate factions of the embattled Free Syrian Army. If given the green light, the plan would see U.S. troops come into direct contact with rebel groups for the first time. Currently, most exchanges with opposition militias are handled by the C.I.A. Training would be held in a third country, CNN reports. The proposal was divulged to CNN by two unnamed Obama administration officials, and would involve instructing rebels in the use of arms and in military tactics. CNN said that Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey “hinted” at the plan during a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this month. “The path to the resolution of the Syrian conflict is through a developed capable moderate opposition, and we know how to do that,” he told the committee. Although U.S. President Barack Obama has threatened a military strike on Damascus — in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack carried out by Syrian forces on Aug. 21 — he has vowed not to put U.S. troops on the ground in Syria. http://world.time.com/2013/09/19/washington-wants-to-train-syrias-moderate-rebels/ |

Apple It’s that time again — time to decide whether to hop on the bus to early-adopters-ville, or hang back, maybe sipping your mocha latte, knowingly watching the bus’ taillights disappear into the gloom from beneath the brim of your won’t-get-fooled-again beret. Of course you don’t need to upgrade to iOS 7 immediately. You can bide your time, ignore the hype and just skip the longish wait times you’re likely to encounter downloading the update on launch day. And yes, iOS 6 works fine and should continue to indefinitely. There’s nothing so pressing or fantastic about Apple’s mobile-OS makeover that your iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch can’t live without it. But … it’s a brand new version of iOS! I share your Christmas-in-September enthusiasm, and I can tell you I won’t be waiting, but then I’m paid not to. Should you join the throngs about to leap? Let’s run through some of the pros and cons. It’s the biggest visual overhaul of iOS since Apple introduced the iPhone. iOS debuted in 2007 with the first iPhone, and it’s changed relatively little since, visually speaking: applications shuffled around, some icon tweaking and polishing, an extra row on the iPad and iPhone 5, some nips and tucks here and there. iOS 7, by contrast, changes everything: it’s the vanguard of Apple’s ostensible quest to liquidate skeuomorphic design (a fancy way of saying iOS calendars and notepads no longer resemble their physical analogues), a shift that’s as significant, aesthetically speaking, as the leap from Mac OS 9 to OS X. You don’t have to hunt for common settings anymore. Swipe up from your iOS device’s bottom and you’ll conjure the new Control Center, a place to get at some of the phone’s most commonly adjusted features, from brightness to Airplane Mode to a new build-in flashlight that uses the phone’s camera LED (simultaneously eliminating your need for a discrete, ad-littered freebie flashlight app). A much improved, customizable App Store. Tired of having to manually update each and every app when that red notification number pops up in your home-screen icon? iOS 7 lets you turn on automatic updates — problem solved! The new App Store also lets you search by age range, which, assuming vendors utilize it properly, should be a boon to parents wondering if an app is appropriate (both functionally and content-wise) for a 2-year-old, 5-year-old, 10-year-old and so forth. Siri can now be a dude. No, not the sort of dude that’s responding to your questions like Alfred Pennyworth, but a “personable male voice,” says TIME Tech’s Harry McCracken in his review. What’s more, Harry says Siri’s female voice “sounds less robotic,” can multisource content from additional sources like Bing or Wikipedia and can present more info in-line instead of launching another app. Multitasking is significantly improved. iOS has had multitasking — the ability to have multiple apps open simultaneously — since iOS 4, but through iOS 6 it’s had notable limitations. iOS 7 improves switching between as well as closing apps: no more stabbing at those tiny red circles — now you just swipe upward, or swipe with more than one finger to close multiple apps. You can also use updates while they’re updating. Upgrading is free — and easy to do. I know, what else is new about iOS upgrades — but some people don’t realize the gratis part. All you need to get your iOS 7 on is tap Settings, select General, tap Software Update, then follow the prompts. And here’s the cons list: It’s the biggest visual overhaul of iOS since Apple introduced the iPhone. Déjà vu! Think the new interface looks like iOS fell into a bucket of clown makeup? Disagree with this notion that something like a camera-app icon shouldn’t resemble a physical camera lens because the design aesthetic won’t stand the test of time? (Even though camera lenses have looked like camera lenses forever?) If so, there’s an argument for hanging back here. Apple’s design view of the world is just one more design view of the world — some people like the way Apple decorates, some people don’t. The launch-day-download traffic jam. When iOS 6 arrived, I got lucky and pulled the whole thing down in just a few minutes. My colleagues, by comparison, had to wait several hours. No, iOS doesn’t lock up your phone while it’s downloading the update direct to the phone, but if you don’t want the stress of popping over every few minutes to note the download bar’s barely moved a pixel, give it a day or two, then make the jump. There’s a steeper-than-usual learning curve. My colleague Harry, who’s been living with iOS 7 for some time, says in his review it’s “different enough that for the first time, I’d recommend that owners of existing iOS devices wait to perform an update until they have some free time to acclimate themselves to the new experience.” It’ll be a while before all your apps are fully updated. You’re probably already seeing new versions of iOS 7–compatible apps in App Store, and you can expect most mainstream vendors to have their affairs in order at launch, but if you’re using a mission-critical app that hasn’t been fully updated, you might want to check with the vendor before pulling the trigger. iOS 7 is a one-way trip. Again, nothing new here, but for those who don’t know, once you’ve pulled the trigger, it’s iOS 7 or bust — you can’t downgrade to iOS 6. http://techland.time.com/2013/09/18/6-reasons-to-upgrade-to-ios-7-right-away-and-5-you-shouldnt/ |
