They say jonathan is a divisive figure, but they cannot tell us how he divided nigeria. The fact that some people don't like jonathan doesn't mean he is divisive. Its extremely rare to find a politician 'loved by everybody'. To the best of my knowledge, every state is represented at the FEC, and development is being spread out evenly. That some politician have tried to give Jonathan a bad name just to hang him is not enough justification for him to forego a right guaranteed him in the constitution to stand for election. If you feel so strongly, set up your campaign and run for president, and lets see how you'll fare..

CITING mischief, Bayelsa State
government has accused Rivers
State Governor Rotimi Amaechi of
distorting the facts on the Soku oil
wells and also blackmailing
President Goodluck Jonathan.
Amaechi recently accused some Kalabari chiefs of betraying
the state over the ownership of the Soku oil wells.
The Bayelsa State government also accused Governor
Amaechi, who recently defected to the opposition All
Progressives Congress (APC), of using Soku to incite the
Kalabari in Rivers State against their Nembe kinsmen in
Bayelsa State.
A statement by Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, Chief Press
Secretary to the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson,
said the controversy on Soku oil wells had long been resolved
by the Supreme Court, National Boundary Commission (NBC)
and several presidential committees.
The statement expressed surprise that Amaechi, being fully
aware that the matter had long been resolved, was now stoking
the matter just to attract media attention and score cheap
political points.
Iworiso-Markson said Amaechi was aware that Soku was
merely a name adopted by Shell, being its nearest operations
base at the time, and not necessarily the location of the oil
wells.
This fact, noted the Chief Press Secretary, has been attested
to by the NBC, as well as a committee set up in October 2000
by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo and headed by Maj.
Gen. A. B. Mamman (rtd).
According to Dickson’s spokesman, “the crux of the matter is
whether the said oil wells, which bear the name given by Shell,
are within Bayelsa or Rivers States according to the
administrative map of Nigeria and other instruments for
purposes of derivation.”
He said: “It is instructive to note that not only are the survey
coordinates of the affected areas within the geographical
area of Bayelsa State, it is also in Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) delineated electoral
constituency as electoral ward 13 in Nembe Local Council Area
of Bayelsa State.”
The statement quoted Chapter 3 of a report of the Revenue
Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) dated
August 2006:
“The Bayelsa/Imo/Abia State governments complained that
the naming of oil fields was often done arbitrarily without any
regard to the culture and particular environment of the people
where the wells or fields are located. This has given rise to
wrong attribution by relevant agencies.
“Incidentally, Soku village in Rivers State is about 10
kilometres, as the crow flies, from the flow station while the
Oluasiri/Soku oil wells/field is completely surrounded by
various Oluasiri communities such as Etukekiri, Ijawkiri,
Fredkiri, Adokonikiri etc, all in Nembe Local Council Area of
Bayelsa State.”
The statement also quoted sections of a report of the General
Mamman committee: “Soku Oil Field: The team relied on the
legal notice captioned “The Eastern Region Local Government
Law, 1955 E.R. NO 26 of 1955. Instrument Establishing the
Nembe District Council” tendered by Bayelsa State on Pages
40-41 of its submission.
“It should be noted that while the Kalabari of Rivers State
call the area Soku, the Nembe people of Bayelsa State call it
Oluasiri, which is one of the councils mentioned in paragraph 5
of the above mentioned instrument.
“In the light of the above, it is recommended that the
production from Soku Oil Field be attributed to Bayelsa
State.”
The statement held that it was the reports that paved the way
for Bayelsa to apply for the monies that had been placed in an
escrow account when Amaechi approached the Supreme Court.
“From July 2004, the Revenue Commission officially
attributed the Oluasiri (Soku) Oil well to Bayelsa State and
the amount of N7,292,218,892 was subsequently released
from the ESCROW account to Bayelsa State on March 19,
2007, during the administration of President Olusegun
Obasanjo,” it said.
The government said the application for a refund of N17,405,
702,164.34 was made during the administration of President
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on the reconciliation on Nembe-South
oil field in Bayelsa State and was found by RMAFC to be true.
The statement said Amaechi failed to disclose that Rivers
State made a similar claim on Nda and Okwori oil wells from
Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom and Delta states, and got a
refund of N17.5 billion.
It accused Amaechi of leading a smear campaign against
President Jonathan and threatened the peace and security of
the nation.

So none of this newspapers have any screen shots of web pages, or scans of documents where she expressly stated that she got her MBA from the said school prior to the saharareporters article so we can compare before and after and put this matter to rest finally.
Even if its a CIA job, I wonder how somebody can effectively clean up all traces of this blunder from the entire web space, and previous documents on this matter.

The All Progressives Congress, Lagos State Chapter, has said the Lagos State Government has quit the Sunborn Yacht Hotel. The party said it was a bad business and the government had abandoned the deal.

The controversial yacht, valued at about N8bn, is an inshore boat hotel.

The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party had recently accused the state government of corruption. It challenged the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to speak out on the whereabouts of the yacht and the two helicopters bought by his administration for security surveillance of the state.

The state Chairman, PDP, Mr. Tunji Shelle, while addressing party faithful during the General Assembly of the chapter, had said, “After floating miserably on the Marina water for so long, the controversial Sunburn Yacht, which cost the Lagos State Government, under (former Governor) Bola Tinubu, a whooping N8bn suddenly disappeared, only to be sighted at Thames in England.

“Now, the question is: who orchestrated this 419 and who were the beneficiaries of this waste of public fund. This is certainly a fraud and (Governor Babatunde) Fashola must tell us something he knows about this fraud, failure which he remains an accessory after the fact in the fraud.”

While reacting in an online interview with our correspondent on Saturday, the state Interim Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said the state government took a bad business decision on the yacht and had done away with it.

He said, “Every successful investor or businessman will tell you that business is not a bed of roses. He knows business is not all about gains all the time; you gain in some and lose in some. It is the same with governments all over the world. No government anywhere in the world will tell you that it has achieved 100 per cent success in every decision it has taken.

“The world will forgive you for taking decisions and making all the mistakes but the world will not forgive you if you do not take decisions at all for fear of failure. LASG has done away with the bad business called the Sunborn Yacht project. Case rested.”

Igbokwe described the PDP’s allegation that the helicopters had been deployed in the Niger Delta for private business purposes as idle talk. He said the party derived joy in telling, seeing, hearing and thinking lies.

“APC Lagos cannot continue to dissipate energy and precious gift of time, providing answers when there are no questions at all. Idle hands are devil’s workshop. PDP Lagos has been idle for close to 16 years and you can understand why the centre cannot hold for them.”

He, however, did not speak, specifically, on the state of the helicopters.

The PDP had also called on Fashola and the APC to protect their integrity by allowing the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, to step aside pending his trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged misappropriation of funds.

Igbokwe, however, said Lagos had been at the forefront in accusing the PDP-led Federal Government of brazen corruption, mismanagement and mediocrity. He said the state had rather showed the way for leadership in Nigeria.

He said, “It seems to me that they have been trying to hit back at Lagos and there is no other crooked and dishonest way to do that than to target the Speaker. I am worried that this is a calculated attempt to tarnish the image of Lagos State Government and these politics are well understood.”

The Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC, has moved in to take over the case
of the 23 judges, who are being investigated over large scale
corruption.
Operatives of the commission’s have established enough
evidence of corruption against seven of the affected judges
and are ready to charge them to court.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, is
reported to have visited the Chief Justice of Nigeria and
given the assurance that the judges would be charged as soon
as the NJC concluded its findings on them.
According to reports, the CJN had however asked the panels
probing the judges to give them ‘fair hearing’ in the discharge
of their assignment.
It was gathered that the directive by the CJN to the panels
to ensure that each of the suspects were heard out, was
responsible for the delay in the meeting of the NJC to ratify
the verdict of the panels.
It was learnt that the Supreme Court would first meet on
the matter before an enlarged meeting of the NJC to take a
final decision on the fate of the affected judicial officers.
The panels which sat on the petitions raised against the
judges were said to have found almost all of them culpable
and accordingly recommended that they be reprimanded by
the judiciary to serve as a deterrent to others in the system.
The suspected judges are from the State and Federal High
courts as well as the Court of Appeal.

that a chartered plane

(APC) was denied landing
at the Gombe airport on Thursday.
He explained that the airport was temporarily closed to
enable a routine test of fire tenders at the airport.
“All airports were duly informed about it. The routine
test was scheduled since there was no scheduled flight on
Thursday,” he said.
The plane, which took off from Abuja, was conveying the
party officials en route inauguration of the state’s
Interim Executive Committee.
The pilot was said to have diverted the plane to Bauchi
when he noticed that there was a fire truck on the
runway.
The leader of the delegation and former Minister of
State for Power and Steel, Murtala Aliyu, had alleged
political undertone, saying relevant government agencies
may be behind the incident
Datti, however, stated that some of the fire trucks were
out of shape, a situation against standard regulations.
He added that authorities decided to conduct the
operation Thursday because there was no scheduled
flight.

The embattled Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly,
Chidi Lloyd, has described allegations of double murder
against him as another political attempt to destroy him.
The Rivers State police command late Thursday evening had
released a statement alleging that Lloyd killed two persons; a
policeman and a political opponent, with his car and was
arrested while trying to escape justice Thursday evening.
A statement by spokesman of the state’s police command,
Ahmed Muhammed (DSP), said Lloyd had killed a policeman,
Sgt. Obadiah Urang and one Kingsley Ejeuo, whom the
statement claimed was the lawmaker’s political opponent, in a
car crash in Emohua council area of the state.
But Lloyd, speaking to the Nigerian Tribune through his
counsel, Emenike Ebete, on Friday, said the police had twisted
the story to suit a political reason to implicate him.
According to him, contrary to claims by the police spokesman
that he drove to kill his political opponent, he did not drive the
car which involved in the accident, he did not know the
deceased, Ejeuo in person, while he was alive and that he was
not arrested by the police near the airport, but in his house,
having given the police the direction to the location personally.
The lawmaker’s counsel said the accident occurred at about
10:30 p.m. on 30th of December, 2013, adding that it was in a
bid to run away from a more ghastly accident, which would
have been a head-on-collision with an on-coming trailer.
“On 30th of December, Hon Lloyd had planned a get-together
with his friends in his village, Akpabu. The event that was
supposed to start from 10.00 a.m. didn’t start until 3.30
p.m. because of his state of health. By the time the event was
ending it was around 10.30 p.m., we tried to make him not to
leave because of time and his health, but he said since he had a
driver, he had no reason to stay back.
“The accident happened in front of the Emohua council
secretariat. There was stop and search police team, there was
also a parked trailer in front of which a Passat was parked,
being checked by a policeman. As we approached the search
and stop spot, another trailer was oncoming and instead of
colliding with it, the driver of the car in which Hon Lloyd was
swerved out of the road, ran into the Passat. The police doing
the search died instantly, one of the four occupants died too,
two were taken to the hospital, one of the two had been
discharged, while the other one is still receiving medical
attention. The fourth person came out unhurt.
“The driver of the car, Kinika, who is Lloyd’s driver, was
arrested immediately and he has since written his statement,
stating the way the accident happened. It is not true that is
was a premeditated act, it is not true that the deceased in the
car was any political opponent, they did not even know each
other at all, this story was written by somebody for a political
reason.
“In any case, the impact was so much that there was smoke in
the car and all the occupants, including Lloyd, escaped from
the car through one door and after the accident, he was taken
to the hospital, Morning Star Clinic in D/Line, and since the
hospital is being renovated, in the morning, he was taken to
Kelsy Harrison Memorial Hospital at Emenike, where he was
discharged yesterday (Thursday) at about 4.00 p.m.
“Police called him to say they wanted to see him over the
accident, he directed them to his residence. The police team,
led by a senior officer by the name Sola, took him away from
his house, not anywhere near the Airforce Base or the
governor’s aircraft as indicated by the police. He followed
them from his house”, Ebete said.
But the police statement had said “late Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo,
who hailed from the same place with Hon. Chidi Lloyd, is
believed to be in the PDP camp led by Elder Felix Obuah.”
“While being guarded by four police in his hospital bed, he
(Lloyd) sneaked out through the hospital's back door and was
driven in three tinted bullet-proof jeeps and escaped.
“On receipt of the information of the escape of Chidi Lloyd,
the Commissioner of Police, CP. MBU J.Mbu, directed for a
thorough search on all jeeps while the CP himself personally
drove to Air Force base where he met HE Gov. Amaechi Rotimi
and a private jet waiting for take for off.
“As soon as he (the police commissioner) alighted, he saluted
the governor, the governor ignored him and showered rain of
abuses on the commissioner of police but the CP kept calm.
Unfortunately for Chidi Lloyd, the eagle-eyed police patrol
vehicles intercepted him and the CP was informed immediately
and he left the Air force base to his office, ignoring the
abuses from the governor. After waiting in vain for Chidi
Lloyd's arrival, the Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, boarded his jet
and took off in anger”, Muhammed stated.
In a separate statement, the Rivers State government
described the police claims as lies.
A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers
State governor, David Iyofor said “In another attempt to
hoodwink the public and discredit the Rivers State Governor,
Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the Rivers State police
command had released a completely distorted and untrue
account of the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the
Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Chidi
Lloyd on January 2, 2014. We emphatically state that:
“Governor Amaechi has no private plane or jet as claimed by
the police and Hon. Lloyd was no where near the plane that
took the governor from Port Harcourt to Abuja.
“The Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi was about to leave
for Abuja when he was informed that the Rivers State Police
Commissioner Mbu Joseph Mbu had ordered that the plane
(which is not the governor’s private jet, as claimed by the
police) cannot leave Port Harcourt because Hon. Lloyd was in
the plane and about to ‘escape’ with Governor Amaechi.
“Shocked, several calls were put across to CP Mbu that were
not answered.
“CP Mbu later showed up and when the governor asked him, he
denied giving such an order. He then went on and on, making a
baseless, noisy argument that no one could comprehend.
“Governor Amaechi put it to him that he (Mbu) came to search
the plane for Chidi Llyod and told him to go ahead and search
the plane. Mbu continued talking endlessly, showing absolutely
no respect or regard for the office of the Governor of Rivers
State, who is the Chief Security Officer of the State.
“Governor Amaechi then called the Inspector-General (IG) of
Police; while the governor was speaking with the IG on phone,
CP Mbu was shouting at the governor, on top of his voice,
trying to disrupt the conversation between the Governor and
the IG to the shock and disbelief of those that were there.
“It was when Governor Amaechi arrived Abuja later in the
evening of yesterday (Thursday) that he was informed that
Hon Chidi Lloyd was arrested in his (Lloyd’s) house in the
presence of his family and lawyer. And Hon. Lloyds' lawyer had
confirmed that he was arrested in his house”, he said.

Goodluck Jonathan has queried
the governor of the Central Bank
of Nigeria, CBN, Sanusi Lamido
Sanusi, over various infractions
detected in the apex bank’s 2012
audited account.
The query, which covered 22
issues bordering on massive
fraud at the bank, was sent to the governor on May 6 and the
response, though expected back on May 8, was submitted to the
President on May 21.
The query of the bank’s account, which its auditors, Ernst and
Young, passed without officially signing, with only a comment
that it complies with the CBN Act, covers issues such as
investment of a huge amount of money in an Islamic bank in
Malaysia without any guarantee of its generating returns.
Others are write-off of about N3.5 billion CBN staff housing
loan and the donation of about one billion naira to a political
party to open up offices across the country. This donation, which
was given under the special access item in the account, is
believed to be geared towards furthering Sanusi’s alleged
political ambition in the 2015 general elections.
The query touched other issues such as refusal of the apex bank
to consolidate in its account, the trillion debt owed by the Asset
Management Company, AMCON, and the non-disclosure of the
total liabilities through the bond floated by the company.
The governor was also asked to explain the discrepancies noted
in the 2012 account regarding the Nigerian Security Printing and
Minting Company, a subsidiary of the apex bank.
Other issues include the controversial donations made to some
higher institutions in the country. Investigations have shown that
some of the donations were inflated in the bank’s books
For example, while the Bayero University Kano, BUK, was said to
have collected N4billion, the school authorities claimed it got
only N1billion.
The apex bank’s account became suspicious when the governor
refused to submit it to the Financial Reporting Council, FRC, the
body with the mandate to ascertain the compliance of companies
with accounting standards, and the International Financial
Reporting Standards, IFRS.
Rather than submitting it to the body, the governor requested
for seven years’ grace for the CBN to comply with FRC
stipulations.
The audit report of the account, which was submitted directly to
the President, was later forwarded to the economic adviser to
the President for his appraisal. The official okay the account and
noted that it complied with the CBN Act.
However, unhappy with the economic adviser’s comment,
Jonathan returned the report to him and drew his attention to
the refusal of the auditor to sign the account.
An official of Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria,
ICAN, told our reporter that an audit report is worthless when it
does not carry the signature of the auditor.
This is not the first time the CBN account will be open to
scrutiny but the bank has always hidden under its autonomy to
stave off close inspection. The apex bank is on the first line
charge and receives its appropriation directly from the
federation account and exercises enormous financial autonomy.
In May, the public accounts committee of the House of
Representatives also had cause to query several expenditure
items amounting to N4.7 billion in the CBN accounts. This
included the N2.8billion which the bank said it spent on the
construction of its Port Harcourt branch.
The House in turn had worked with a report from the office of
the auditor general of the federation which queried extravagant
expenditure by the apex bank for which documents were not
made available for verification.
Chairman of the House committee on public accounts, Solomon
Olamilekan at a meeting with officials of the bank alleged that
there were indications that due process was not followed in
expenditure as no documents were provided.
Some of the transactions that the committee queried include the
sums of N23 million and N50claimed to have been spent for the
same purpose of renovating the governor’s official residence as
well as N848 million spent on the purchase of a property from
the National Planning Commission without any transaction
agreement.
However, like many probes of public institutions by the National
Assembly, the matter appears not to have been pursued.
The N4 billion donation to BUK questioned in the President’s
query had not even been known to the public. What had irked
many Nigerians, including federal lawmakers, was the donation
earlier in the year of N100 million to victims of terrorism in
Kano, Sanusi’s hometown.
The House of Representatives entertained a motion on misuse of
public funds on the donation which degenerated into a rowdy
session. Many members accused Sanusi or misuse of public funds.
Member from Yobe State, Goni Lawan, described Sanusi’s
donation of N100 million to Kano State and another N25m gift
to Madalla bomb blast victims as “an act of terrorism”, arguing
that attacks in Yobe and Borno states did not attract the same
monetary consolations from the CBN governor.
“When I first heard of the action of the CBN governor, I was
surprised. I asked whether Yobe andBorno states were not parts
of Nigeria, as these attacks took place there first,” Lawan said.
Attempts to get the apex bank to react our story were
unsuccessful. Over a week ago, when our reporter contacted the
corporate affairs director of the CBN, Ugochukwu Okoroafor,
and confronted him with the various issues noted in the CBN
2012 audited account, he claimed ignorance of any presidential
query to the governor.
“I don’t know what donation you are talking about. Was it done in
cash? I’m not aware of the things you are saying. If you can
provide me with this document that would help, because I haven’t
seen it,” he said.
Okoroafor said he was out of town on an official assignment in
Abia State and would not be back until last weekend.
A mail asking him to respond to specific allegations about a
write-off of about N3.5 billion CBN staff housing loan, donation
of about N1 billion to a political party to open up offices across
the country as well as the donation of N4 billion to the Bayero
University Kano, among others, has not been replied.

As a northern minority, I am convinced this war against
terrorism can be won if it is pursued truthfully. Sadly, many
northerners will rather blame the government of President
Goodluck Jonathan for deliberately setting up Boko Haram to
destabilize the north. Many have been brain-washed to believe
this. Only a few ever see anything good in this government. As
usual, emotion and religious bigotry have beclouded the
judgment of many. As long as it was a Christian problem, no one
saw it as a big deal until it became a northern problem with
casualty cutting across the board.
The solution to Boko Haram lies with the north seeing it as what
it is: An enemy that must be defeated. When it was becoming a
threat to the business life of Kano State, it was quickly
quenched through giving out information to security operatives.
When Maiduguri became uninhabitable to all, the citizens rose
up against the insurgents. Without doubt, the solution lies with
the people. The people of Sokoto and Katsina states who are
historically opposed to fanaticism and Islamic violence have
been shielded from this scourge. There is an Hausa adage that
you can’t do business in a market without an indigene. Only few
prominent northerners have spoken against Boko Haram either
out of fear or for their subtle support of it because it is
troubling Jonathan. The body language of many prominent
northern religious and political leaders supports the insurgency.
In fact, some boast their knowledge of the insurgents and
arrogantly refuse government overtures to help address the
security challenges attendant to the Boko Haram insurgency.
Yet these are people who want to rule Nigeria.
The pace of development in the north has greatly slowed down
compared with the south where there is peace. Industries are
daily springing up especially in the South-West contrary to
what is happening in the north. President Jonathan, it must be
noted, isn’t our problem. It is the selfishness of the northern
elite. They will prefer people gathering at their gates
scrambling for stipends falling on one another and dying in the
process like it happened in Ilorin, Kwara State recently. While
the elite in the South-West are building universities, their
northern counterparts outside Atiku Abubakar, are giving tacit
and overt support to terrorism.
Time is running out for the north where a majority of the
citizenry are lovers of peace. The PUNCH must continue to lead
in this struggle to restore peace to our beloved country. Kudos

I think the best thing to do, if you truly receive a threat email is to report to the authorities, and not opening a thread on nairaland.
There is no guarantee that everyone will believe what you say, everybody has his own degree of suspicion towards others. What I saw in that thread was a claim that failed to survive normal nairaland scrutiny. It's unfortunate that it took the political dimension, and degenerated to name-calling and mudslinging.
Even if you open a thread in the romance section and make certain claims and assertions, it is perfectly normal on nairaland for people to doubt or openly discredit your assertions. It shouldn't degenerate into ethnic or tribal warfare. We want political debates based on policies and strategies, not religious, ethnic or personal interests.

Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal yesterday called on
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to
prepare for the 2015 polls.
Tambuwal gave the advice in
his New Year message signed by his Special Adviser on Media
and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam.
The speaker commended the Yobe State Independent
Electoral Commission for conducting a peaceful and credible
local government election worthy of emulation.
“The lesson in what happened in Yobe should not be lost on all
of us in spite of the security situation in the state and
operating under the State of Emergency”, he said.
He appreciated the role played by the government and people
of the state as well as security agencies to ensure that the
election witnessed massive turn out and was concluded
peacefully.
“The determination of the government and people of Yobe
State to have democratic structures at the grassroots
played a huge part in ensuring the success of the exercise.
“It should not be lost on all of us that when all hands are on
deck, and with sincerity of purpose, we can achieve success
together.
“I commend the security agencies, the government and people
of Yobe State for setting an example worthy of emulation”,
the Speaker said.
Tambuwal enjoined Nigerians to remain positive about the
country, and prayed to God for a prosperous and peaceful
2014.

Indigenes of Odi community in Kolokuma-Opokuma local
government area of Bayelsa State yesterday took their protest
to the East-West road causing serious gridlock on the busy
route over the federal government refusal to pay the sum of
N37.6 billion compensation as directed by the court for the
destruction of their community.
The protesters made up of the community youths, old women
and men were armed with placards highlighting their plight and
recalling the atrocities meted to their defenceless population by
the Nigerian military over a decade ago.
Saturday Vanguard learnt that the protest was also to
commemorate the 13th anniversary of the military invasion
which left Odi, one of the biggest communities in Ijawland in
rubles in the wake of the killing of some policemen by some
hoodlums.
The indigenes of the community said they were forced to take
their protest to the busy federal highway which straddled the
states of the South South zone due to the continued refusal
of the federal government to obey the court order to pay their
community the sum of N37.6bn for the injustice visited on its
population by the Nigerian military.
It took the intervention of the police to prevail on the
protesters to vacate the busy road and returned to their
community where a memorial service was held to commemorate
the destruction/genocide unleashed on Odi.
Spokesman of Odi community, Lt Commander Koku Imananagha
(rtd), warned that they might be forced to take their case to
the international community if their appeal to the federal
government to pay them as directed by the court failed to yield
result.
Speaking on the long drawn legal battle which went in favour of
his community, he said, it was their resolve from the beginning
to take the path of justice in pursuit of this matter through the
courts of the land even though it was a clear case of total
destruction/genocide against Odi by federal government.
He said, “So, it was a big surprise to see a Human Right abuse
case in this 21st millennium dragging for 14 years. Eventually,
19th February, 2013 the Federal High Court Port Harcourt
presided over by Justice Lambo Akanbi in a substantive suit
awarded Odi community the sum of N37.616,871,000 only as
compensation for the destruction of Odi to be paid within 21
days.
Despite the Inge road to this victory the federal government
and the Central Bank of Nigerian instead of taking the path of
glory to put smiles on the faces of the long traumatized people
of Odi, chose to take us through further legal battle.”
According to him, on March 12, 2013 the Federal High Court
Port Harcourt still presided over by Justice Lambo Akanbi
turned down a stay of execution filed by the Attorney General
of the judgement sum without further delay to the law abiding
citizens of Odi.
“Furthermore on 14th May, 2013, the Federal Appeal Court in
Port Harcourt presided over by Justice Ejembi Eko granted the
withdrawal application by the AGF for an out of court
settlement with Odi community, for which the AGF did nothing
thereafter.
“Consequently, on the 31st May, 2013, the Federal High Court,
Port Harcourt, gave a Garnishee a order Nisi compelling the
garnishee (Central Bank of Nigeria) to pay the judgment
Creditor/Applicant (Odi) the sum of N37,616,871,000. The
Garnishee Order Nisi had a mandatory 17 days life span which
gives the Federal Government yet another room to conclude the
out of court settlement with Odi Community. This failed
because of the inaction of the AGF.
“Finally, on 17th June 2013, the Federal High Court Judge
Justice Lambo Akanbi pronounced as follows: That Garnishee
Order Nisi is hereby made absolute directing the Garnishee
(Central Bank of Nigeria) to pay the judgement sum of
N37,616,871,000 which is judgement debt owed the Applicants
by the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as
epitomized by the judgment debtors.
“Accordingly, in view of the sequence of legal successes in our
favour and inaction of the federal government to pay the
judgement sum, the good people of Odi are now appealing to the a human rights organizations, NGOs, the press and all well
meaning individuals and groups to prevail on the federal
government of Nigeria to do the needful in accordance with the judgment of the courts without any further delay,” he said.

Common sense will tell anyone that that claim was ridiculous. That NNPC has withheld an amount equal to the national budget for two years. Did U even hear NNPC's reply, that CBN brought up that complaint in september which the presidency forwarded to the petroleum minister who satisfactorily replied the. Query. Are you telling. Me that Sanusi had no idea that other government agencies take different oil revenues and not just NNPC.
If you are the MD of a bank, will you take that slight lightly, if your chief financial officer leaks a letter he wrote to you to the shareholders saying that all the profit the bank has made in two years are missing? If Sanusi has any decency left, he should just resign his position. That letter is a clear indication that he intends to embarrass the FGN. No reasonable investor will build a refinery when gov't keeps on paying for subsidy. They will always run into great loss.
We cannot continue importing rice when we can produce it locally. No farmer will want to compete against cheap imported asian rice. The best way to encourage local production is to restrict the importation of rice. This will mean a short-term increase in the price of rice, but if we can endure this pain and get our local production to meet local consumption, and even get to export level, competition will surely crash the prices of rice. Imagine the jobs and food security that will give us.
We have an extensive coastline and we can rear most type of fishes we consume, we have no business importing fishes. The present ban is to encourage local production. We really have no business helping other countries create jobs for their people rearing fishes for us to consume when we can do it here and create lots of jobs for our people.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has
denied newspaper reports that it is broke and has less than
N2million in its corporate coffers.
In a statement, the EFCC described the comment,
reportedly made by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr
Emmanuel Adegboyega Aremo, when he led a delegation to
the public hearing by the Senate Committee on Drugs,
Narcotics and Financial Crimes on the Bill to establish the
Nigerian Financial Intelligence Agency, as a gross
misrepresentation of what actually transpired.
“The mention of N2million by Aremo was not in respect of
the total financial health of the EFCC, but a direct
response to a remark by the Chair of the Committee,
Senator Victor Lar, to the effect that his committee had
observed during an oversight visit to the Nigerian Financial
Intelligence Unit, NFIU that it has no power generating set
while its ceiling had caved in,” the statement said.
It added that Mr. Aremo remarked that the Commission
had complained to the Committee during the visit on the
state of its finances and that the situation has not
improved.
“The comment has no bearing whatsoever on the operations
of the Commission,” the statement concluded.

Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi , said on Tuesday that the
N500bn allegedly missing from the account of the Subsidy
Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme had been shared
to the states and local governments.
She state this while appearing before the Senate ad-hoc
committee on SURE-P, presided by the Deputy Senate Leader,
Senator Abdul Ningi.
Moreover, the minister explained that the $49.8bn, which the
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi,
claimed was not in the federation account, was also intact.
According to her words, the total subsidy funds between
February 2012 and September 2013 was N816bn.
She said N300bn out of the amount had been remitted to the
SURE-P account at the federal level while N500bn was shared
to the states and local governments within the period.
Okonjo - Iweala and the Senate Committee on SURE - P
however disagreed over the formular used to arrive at the
N15bn monthly remittances to the fund.
The committee queried the minister for remitting a flat rate
every month to the SURE - P account when proceeds from
petroleum sales are not stable from one month to another.
They also faulted the minister' s disbursement of a whopping
N500bn to states and local governments and attributed the
development to the reason why the programme failed to meet
the yearnings and aspiration of the masses.
However, Okonjo-Iweala asked the committee to invite specific
government agencies which had failed to effectively implement
the aspect of the programme which the members of the public
might be complaining about.
The minister claimed that the programme had achieved its
purpose in the areas of quality healthcare provision to children,
pregnant women and nursing mothers.
