First, the only place where trade was going on before British colonisation was the SW. It was only the Yorubas folks that were found civilized, clothed and trading unlike the naked ways the British found other regions folks hence only the SW trade could have sustained Nigeria as at that time

Crude oil only became profitable in the late 70's and early 80's.

As a matter of fact, it was documented that Okitipupa Palm industry, which was built by Awolowo, contributed the largest revenue into Nigeria's purse before crude oil became profitable in the late 70's.
