Travel / Re: First-time Trip To UK With UK Passport: Please Advise! by KaizenO(m): 2:13pm On Jul 23, 2019
You can only fly out of Nigeria with either a Nigerian Passport (no need for UK visa on the passport) or your UK passport that has a Nigerian visa in it.

Since you are already in Nigeria and you cannot get a Nigerian visa in your UK passport in Nigeria, the realistic option is to travel out of Nigeria with your Nigerian Passport and when you get to the UK, go through UK immigration with your UK passport.

When returning to Nigeria from the UK, you either obtain a Nigerian visa on your UK passport or you leave the UK with your UK passport and enter Nigeria with your Nigerian passport.

Education / Re: From MBBS To Botany, Please I Need Suggestion! by KaizenO(m): 10:42am On Dec 28, 2017
There are a few options you can consider.

1. You can apply to transfer from BUK to a private university for medicine with your JAMB and post-JAMB scores. Many private universities will accept you if you can afford the exorbitant fees.
2. You can accept to study Botany at BUK and apply to change to medicine at BUK when you get to year 2.
3. You can accept to study Botany at BUK and transfer to another university that will accept you to year 2 medicine after you complete your first year in BUK
4. You can commence the Botany degree at BUK and re-take JAMB to study medicine in another university.

What you shouldn’t do is reject the offer and sit down at home for another year.

Even if you end up graduating with a degree in Botany, there are many career opportunities for Botanist e.g. you can go on to study for a masters and / or doctorate and end up in the academics or go on to specialize as an Ecologist, an agronomist, biophysicists, or horticulturists. You can divert to the pharmaceutical industry. You can even end up leaving applied sciences ultimately and find yourself in financial services or in FMCG.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Do I Continue Schooling Or Accept This Job Offer - So Confused by KaizenO(m): 8:14am On Jan 29, 2017
In my opinion, you should accept the job so you don’t regret rejecting the offer in future when you complete your masters and are unable to find a job that is as good post-MSc. (good jobs are really hard to find, masters or no masters). Remember that amassing qualifications without having a job is not worth it

You can defer the MSc for one year and see whether you are able to combine your job with the MSc once you become familiar with the routine of your new job. If you are unable to combine full time work with the full time masters, then you can complete the same masters as a part time students or apply to do the same masters via distance / online leaning format with a foreign University.

Jobs/Vacancies / Biggest Mistakes I See On Resumes, And How To Correct Them - Google Head Of HR by KaizenO(m): 10:14am On Sep 22, 2014
A bad resume can knock you out of the running for a job that you deserve, no matter how illustrious your work history.

Laszlo Bock, Google's senior vice president of people operations for the past eight years, would know.

Google sometimes gets more than 50,000 resumes in a single week, and Bock has personally reviewed more than 20,000.

In a recent post on LinkedIn, Bock highlights the most common mistakes that cause him to throw out a resume and how to correct them.

Even if you're not gunning for a Google job, avoiding these mistakes will make sure your resume helps — not hurts — you, no matter what you're applying for.

Here are the five resume mistakes that Bock sees again and again.

Mistake One: Typos

It sounds obvious, but Bock says he sees spelling, punctuation, and noun-verb agreement mistakes all the time.

People who spend a lot of time tweaking their resumes are more likely to miss typos, because they've read through everything so many times. To avoid silly mistakes, Bock suggests reading your resume over from bottom to top, which will help you focus better on each line, or having someone else give it a read.

"Typos are deadly because employers interpret them as a lack of detail-orientation, as a failure to care about quality," he writes.

Mistake Two: Length

If your resume is more than two pages, you're doing it wrong. A good rule, Bock says, is that you can have one page of resume for every 10 years of work experience.

"Think about it this way: the *sole* purpose of a resume is to get you an interview. That's it," Bock says. "It's not to convince a hiring manager to say 'yes' to you (that's what the interview is for) or to tell your life's story (that's what a patient spouse is for)."

If you have a succinct, focused resume packed with only the most important information, it shows your potential employer that you know how to synthesize and prioritize information.

Mistake Three: Complicated formatting

You want your resume to look clean and legible above all, so skip the fancy fonts and artistic touches. Some basic rules: The font should be at least 10 point, and your resume should have half-inch margins, consistent spacing, aligned columns, and your name and contact information on each page. Black type on white paper is best.

Bock recommends saving your resume as a PDF, but if you don't, you should make sure you check it out in both Word and Google Docs so no weird formatting issues slip through.

Mistake Four: Revealing confidential company information

Bock says 5% to 10% of resumes reveal confidential information, which is a clear sign to him that those candidates could reveal Google's trade secrets later on if they got hired.

"There's an inherent conflict between your employer's needs (keep business secrets confidential) and your needs (show how awesome I am so I can get a better job)," Bock writes. "So candidates often find ways to honor the letter of their confidentiality agreements but not the spirit. It's a mistake."

He gives the example of one resume he received in which the candidate wrote that he had "consulted to a major software company in Redmond, Washington." Sure, the applicant didn't straight-up say that his previous company had worked with Microsoft, but he might as well have.

Mistake Five: Telling Outright Lies

Lying on your resume is never worth it, Bock says. You may be tempted to slightly exaggerate your work history, round up your GPA, or say that you actually got that degree that you were just shy of achieving, but don't do it.

As Bock points out, you can easily get busted thanks to reference checks and Google searches, and even old lies can still get you fired if they're discovered.

Plus, he adds, "Our moms taught us better. Seriously."
