CelebritiesNigeria's Olubadan, Ruler Of Ibadan Land, Dies At 101-BBC by Kangol99(op): 9:27am On Jan 21, 2016
An influential monarch in south-west Nigeria, the Olubadan, or ruler of Ibadan land, has died at the age of 101, his son has confirmed to the BBC.

Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade, who ruled over Nigeria's third largest city Ibadan, died in his sleep on Tuesday evening, Nigeria's Punch newspaper quotes palace sources as saying. An official announcement of the Yoruba king's death is expected later.

Although largely symbolic, the Olubadan still has strong regional influence. 'Very stern' Nigeria's many monarchs vary in hierarchy and importance with some ruling over large areas, while others are traditional rulers of a village or town.

The Olubadan is one of the few unelected figures whom the government would consult on major policy issues in the south-west, reports the BBC's Chris Ewokor from the capital, Abuja.

Speaking to the BBC, his son Prince Gbade Lana described the late Olubadan as "a good father, very very stern". "He preached humility... he taught us that once you are humble you will be able to achieve anything in life."

The Olubadan of Ibadan: The title means "Lord of Ibadan", a Yoruba community founded in the 16th Century The king reigns over a population of nearly three million people Ibadan is the capital of south-western Oyo state - the third-largest metropolitan area by population after Lagos and Kano Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade was the 40th Olubadan A former teacher, soldier, civil servant and politician, he was crowned at the age of 93 years

What’s the point of Nigeria’s traditional kings?
Mr Lana, himself the Oyo state commissioner for information, said he hoped his father would be remembered for "the passion he had for Ibadan as a city... to see that Ibadan grew and became a better place".

A World War Two veteran, the late monarch was also a seasoned civil servant and a politician who served as a minister in the 1960s, our reporter says. In 1964, he led the Nigerian parliamentary delegation to a London conference about how to restructure the then-British colonies of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, now Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

The name of his title, Olubadan, has been trending on Twitter across the country, since the news of his death broke. Oba Odugade was on the throne for seven years following the death of the previous Olubadan in 2007.

CelebritiesOyo State Thrown Into Mourning As Olubadan Of Ibadan Dies 3 Hours Ago by Kangol99(op): 10:52am On Jan 20, 2016
Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade, the Olubadan of Ibadan is dead. The Nation reports that the Olubadan passed away in the evening of Tuesday, January 19 after he lost consciousness

Oba Odulana who turned 100 years in 2014, was reportedly taken to a morgue late into the night to avoid drawing attention, as his death some fear will stir great bitterness over the entire city.

The details of his death were sketchy and when contacted, one of his sons, Prof Femi Lana, declined to comment. Chief Isiaka Akinpelu, the personal assistant to the late monarch, denied the death, dismissing it as a rumour. He stressed that the Olubadan is still hail and hearty. According to tradition, the next in line to the throne is the Balogun of Ibadan land, High Chief Saliu Adetunji.

Oba Odulana mounted the throne in 2007 as the 39th Olubadan of Ibadan land. He was the 17th Olubadan since the title was elevated from Baale Ibadan to the Olubadan in 1930.

The first traditional ruler to bear the new title was Oba Okunola Abass who reigned from 1930-1946.

HealthLassa Fever Claims 63, Spread To 17 States by Kangol99(op):
The Federal Government said on Tuesday that Lassa fever has claimed 63 lives out of 212 suspected reported from 62 local government areas in affected states.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, confirmed this at the emergency National Council of Health meeting in Abuja on the outbreak of the disease.

Adewole listed the 17 affected states as Bauchi, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Nasarawa, Lagos, Delta, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Zamfara and Kogi as well as the FCT. He said there is high level of denial and conspiracy across some states, adding that health managers should not deceive executives by the pretence and silence.

The minister described the denial of Ebonyi to report five suspected cases and one death as conspiracy of denial. He said every state should consider itself at risk and put measures to contain and prevent the disease.

Adewole said the federal government would maintain high level of alert all year round to celebrate Lassa fever obituary next year. “With the resources available we will collectively eliminate the disease in Nigeria soon. “We have special facilities around us and we have adequate human resource to address the challenge.

“We will strengthen the Primary Health Care Centres across the country to enhance the surveillance mechanism,’’ he said. The minister said 5,000 Primary Health Care centres would be activated before the end of 2016.

“A committee had already been set up to map out health care centres across the country would benefit from the programme. “At least one primary health care centre will be functional in a ward,’’ said Adewole. In a related development, the minister announced that six most affected states will have Lassa fever diagnostic centres. He said the states are Niger, Nasarawa, Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi and Ondo states; this is in addition to the six existing Lassa fever treatment centres.

According to him, the centres are Lassa fever Treatment Centre, Irrua, Edo; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno; Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. Others are Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), University College Hospital Ibadan, and the National Centre for Disease Control, Asokoro, Abuja.

Business To Business10 Great Tips For Business Startups by Kangol99(op): 9:55pm On Jan 19, 2016
These are 10 pieces of advice that I wish someone had given to me before I launched my first venture.

In brief, they are as follows

1. Focus. Focus. Focus.
Many first-time entrepreneurs feel the need to jump at every "opportunity" they come across. Opportunities are often wolves in sheep's clothing. Avoid getting side-tracked. Juggling multiple ventures will spread you thin and limit both your effectiveness and productivity. Do one thing perfectly, not 10 things poorly. If you feel the need to jump onto another project, that might mean something about your original concept.

2. Know what you do. Do what you know.
Don't start a business simply because it seems sexy or boasts large hypothetical profit margins and returns. Do what you love. Businesses built around your strengths and talents will have a greater chance of success. It's not only important to create a profitable business, it's also important that you're happy managing and growing it day in and day out. If your heart isn't in it, you will not be successful.

3. Say it in 30 seconds or don't say it at all.
From a chance encounter with an investor to a curious customer, always be ready to pitch your business. State your mission, service and goals in a clear and concise manner. Fit the pitch to the person. Less is always more.

4. Know what you know, what you don't know and who knows what you don't.
No one knows everything, so don't come off as a know-it-all. Surround yourself with advisors and mentors who will nurture you to become a better leader and businessman. Find successful, knowledgeable individuals with whom you share common interests and mutual business goals that see value in working with you for the long-term.

5. Act like a startup.
Forget about fancy offices, fast cars and fat expense accounts. Your wallet is your company's life-blood. Practice and perfect the art of being frugal. Watch every dollar and triple-check every expense. Maintain a low overhead and manage your cash flow effectively.

6. Learn under fire.
No business book or business plan can predict the future or fully prepare you to become a successful entrepreneur. There is no such thing as the perfect plan. There is no perfect road or one less traveled. Never jump right into a new business without any thought or planning, but don't spend months or years waiting to execute. You will become a well-rounded entrepreneur when tested under fire. The most important thing you can do is learn from your mistakes--and never make the same mistake twice.

7. No one will give you money.
There, I said it. No one will invest in you. If you need large sums of capital to launch your venture, go back to the drawing board. Find a starting point instead of an end point. Scale down pricey plans and grandiose expenditures. Simplify the idea until it's manageable as an early stage venture. Find ways to prove your business model on a shoestring budget. Demonstrate your worth before seeking investment. If your concept is successful, your chances of raising capital from investors will dramatically improve.

8. Be healthy.
No, I'm not your mother. However, I promise that you will be much more productive when you take better care of yourself. Entrepreneurship is a lifestyle, not a 9-to-5 profession. Working to the point of exhaustion will burn you out and make you less productive. Don't make excuses. Eat right, exercise and find time for yourself.

9. Don't fall victim to your own B.S.
Don't talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. Impress with action not conversation. Endorse your business enthusiastically, yet tastefully. Avoid exaggerating truths and touting far reaching goals as certainties. In short, put up or shut up.

10. Know when to call it quits.
Contrary to popular belief, a smart captain does not go down with the ship. Don't go on a fool's errand for the sake of ego. Know when it's time to walk away. If your idea doesn't pan out, reflect on what went wrong and the mistakes that were made. Assess what you would have done differently. Determine how you will utilize these hard-learned lessons to better yourself and your future entrepreneurial endeavors. Failure is inevitable, but a true entrepreneur will prevail over adversity.
