The Swiss Attorney General has opened
criminal proceedings against FIFA president
Sepp Blatter, who was questioned on Friday
on suspicion of criminal mismanagement as
well as on suspicion of misappropriation of
FIFA money.
Swiss authorities said that UEFA president
Michel Platini was also being questioned as
a witness over "a disloyal payment'' of 2
million Swiss francs from Blatter in 2011 --
for work done between 1999 and 2002.
Platini was a personal adviser to Blatter, his
former mentor, when he started out in
football politics, and is the favourite to
succeed Blatter for the 2016 FIFA
presidential elections.
Under Swiss law, a payment is classified
disloyal if it is against the best interest of the
employer -- in this case FIFA. Platini will have
to answer why the alleged payment was not
made until nine years down the line.
The Swiss federal prosecutor said police
searched and seized data from Blatter's
office.
The allegations suggest authorities suspect
Blatter of criminal mismanagement of FIFA
money to shore up his own power base --
political enrichment, if not taking money
himself.
According to the Swiss AG statement, Blatter
manipulated FIFA contracts, including one in
2005 with then-Caribbean Football Union
president Jack Warner, the former FIFA vice
president who was indicted in May on
corruption charges in the United States and
awaits extradition.
"There is as suspicion that, in the
implementation of this agreement, Joseph
Blatter also violated his fiduciary duties and
acted against the interest of FIFA," the Swiss
federal office said.
Blatter's U.S.-based lawyer, Richard Cullen,
denied his client's wrongdoing ans said he
was cooperating, but the statement
appeared to focus only on the Warner
contract, and not the payment to Platini.
"We are confident that when the Swiss
authorities have a chance to review the
documents and the evidence they will see
that the contract was properly prepared and
negotiated by the appropriate staff
members of FIFA who were routinely
responsible for such contracts, and certainly
no mismanagement occurred,'' Cullen wrote.
Platini released a statement saying he had
clarified matters about the payment with the
authorities.
"Today I was asked by the Swiss authorities
to provide information relating to the
ongoing investigations surrounding FIFA,"
he said. "I have always been open to
supporting the relevant bodies and
authorities in their investigative work and
therefore cooperated fully.
"Regarding the payment that was made to
me, I wish to state that this amount relates
to work which I carried out under a
contract with FIFA and I was pleased to have
been able to clarify all matters relating to
this with the authorities.
"Today I also made clear to the Swiss
authorities that since I live in Switzerland I
am available to speak with them any time to
clarify any matters relating to the
investigations."
FIFA's statement read: "Swiss criminal
proceedings against the President of FIFA,
Mr. Joseph Blatter, have been opened on 24
September 2015 on suspicion of criminal
mismanagement (Article 158 Swiss Criminal
Code / SCC) and -- alternatively --
misappropriation (Article 138 Swiss Criminal
Code / SCC).
"On the one hand, the OAG suspects that on
12 September 2005 Mr. Joseph Blatter has
signed a contract with the Caribbean
Football Union (with Jack Warner as the
President at this time); this contract was
unfavorable for FIFA. On the other hand,
there is as suspicion that, in the
implementation of this agreement, Joseph
Blatter also violated his fiduciary duties and
acted against the interest of FIFA and/or
FIFA Marketing & TV AG.
"Additionally, Mr. Joseph Blatter is suspected
of a disloyal payment of CHF 2 Mio. to Michel
Platini, President of Union of European
Football Associations (UEFA), at the expense
of FIFA, which was allegedly made for work
performed between January 1999 and June
2002 ; this payment was executed in
February 2011.
FIFA, which abruptly cancelled a planned
news conference on Friday, said it is
cooperating with the Swiss AG office.
"Since 27 May 2015, Fifa has been
cooperating with the OAG and has complied
with all requests for documents, data and
other information. We will continue this level
of cooperation throughout the
investigation," the FIFA statement said.
"Today, at the Home of Fifa, representatives
from the Office of the Swiss Attorney
General conducted interviews and gathered
documents pursuant to its investigation. Fifa
facilitated these interviews as part of our
ongoing cooperation. We will have no
further comment on the matter as it is an
active investigation."
German Football Association (DFB) president
Wolfgang Niersbach said there was no
indication of Blatter's legal troubles when
the meeting was cancelled.
"It was not mentioned with one syllable
during the ExCo meeting today," he said. "I
left the FIFA building in the belief that Sepp
Blatter will comment on the current
situation at the scheduled news conference.
"I only learnt later that the Swiss authorities
have opened proceedings against him. The
news leaves me speechless."
Blatter is the first person to be formally
quizzed as a suspect in the Swiss case,
which FIFA instigated last November, when
it complained about possible money
laundering in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup
bidding contests won by Russia and Qatar.
His right-hand man, FIFA secretary general
Jerome Valcke, was suspended last week
after being implicated in a scheme to sell
tickets for the 2014 World Cup on the
secondary market.
Warner will face an extradition hearing on
Dec. 2 after authorities in Trinidad and
Tobago stopped attempts to have the case
against him tossed out, officials said last
week.

Arsenal have won their appeal against the
sending off of defender Gabriel in a stormy
2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on
Saturday.
As the game approached half-time, Chelsea
striker Diego Costa appeared to twice rake
his hands across Arsenal defender Laurent
Koscielny's face before chest-bumping him
to the ground.
Gabriel then came over to defend his
teammate, and he and Costa received yellow
cards following a confrontation.
A minute later, the Arsenal centre-back was
sent off for flicking a boot at the Chelsea
player.
The Gunners appealed against the decision,
and published an FA statement on their
official website on Tuesday confirming it
had been overturned.
The statement said: "Arsenal's claim of
wrongful dismissal in relation to Gabriel has
been upheld following an Independent
Regulatory Commission hearing.
"The player's three-match suspension has,
therefore, been withdrawn with immediate
effect.
"Gabriel was dismissed for violent conduct
during the game against Chelsea on
Saturday [19 September 2015].
"The player is currently subject to a separate
FA charge of improper conduct in relation to
Saturday's game and has until 6pm on
Thursday [24 September 2015] to reply."
Chelsea striker Costa, who was charged with
violent conduct, faces a suspension.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been
charged with violent conduct by the
Football Association after his side’s 2-0
win over Arsenal on Saturday.
Costa, 26, put his hands in the face of
Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny
prior to clashing with Gunners defender
Gabriel, who was sent off.
The FA has also charged Gabriel, 24, with
improper conduct and both clubs with
failing to control their players.
Arsenal are to appeal against Gabriel’s
dismissal and three-match ban.
Costa has until 18:00 BST on Tuesday, 22
September to respond to the charge,
which is for the clash with Koscielny.
Having confirmed the match officials did
not see the incident, the FA supplied
video footage to a panel of three former
elite referees.
They each had to independently rule
Costa’s actions to be an instant red card
for the FA to proceed with the charge.
If Costa accepts the charge he will serve
an automatic three-match suspension
with immediate effect but, if he contests
it, an independent regulatory
commission will rule.
Chelsea face Walsall, Newcastle and
Southampton in their next three
domestic fixtures.
Referee Mike Dean booked both Costa
and Gabriel for their spat, before the
latter was dismissed for kicking out at
the Blues forward.
Gabriel and both clubs have until 18:00
BST on Thursday, 24 September to reply
to their charges.
Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, who
was sent off for two bookable offences,
has been warned about his behaviour.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could
face a five-match ban after a member of
the public complained he had used sexist
and abusive language against former
team doctor Eva Carneiro, Britain’s press
reported Friday.
The Football Association said in a
statement that it had “received an enquiry
relating to an alleged incident during the
Premier League fixture between Swansea
v Chelsea on 8 August” but that it would
make no further comment.
Mourinho criticised Carneiro when she ran
on the pitch to treat Belgian star Eden
Hazard at the request of referee Michael
Oliver during the final stages of the drawn
match.
Footage of the incident broadcast by Sky
Sports showed Mourinho shouting angrily
while watching Carneiro from the
touchline, before exchanging words as
she came down the touchline to return to
the dug-out.
Mourinho demoted the Gibraltar-born
medic straight after the game, and she
has yet to return to the club’s training
ground.
Under FA rules, players and coaches can
be punished for using “offensive, insulting
or abusive language and/or gestures”.
An aggravated breach, for instance a
reference to gender, carries a minimum
touchline ban of five-matches.
The FA is compelled to investigate the
claim, which was made in the past few
days, according to reports.

Saudi Arabia official said 1,028 Muslim pilgrims were evacuated on Thursday, when a fire broke out in a hotel in the city of Mecca, a week ahead of the annual haj pilgrimage. Abdullah al-Harthi, Spokesman for the Saudi Civil Defence agency, said in Riyadh that two pilgrims were injured in the fire. He said the cause of the blaze, which started on the eighth storey of the 11- floor building, was not immediately known. Pilgrims are due to start the haj rituals on Tuesday, and they last through Sept. 26. Meanwhile, Saudi authorities said 1.2 million Muslims had arrived in the kingdom for the 2015 haj. Muslims are expected to perform the pilgrimage at least once during their lifetimes if they have the means to do so |
Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal
High Court, Lagos, on Thursday remanded
a Diamond Bank employee, Obioha
Okengwu, at Ikoyi Prisons for allegedly
defrauding the bank of N111.2 million.
The accused, whose address was not
given, is standing trial on a nine-count
charge bordering on conspiracy and
fraud.
Prosecutor Effiong Asuquo told the court
that the accused committed the offences
between April and August 2014 in Lagos.
He said the accused conspired with
members of his family to defraud the
bank.
According to him, the accused committed
the offences while working in the e-
Business unit of the handling daily
settlement entries of transactions done on
Point of Sales (POS) and Automated Teller
Machine (ATM).
He said the accused unlawfully credited
huge sums of money into his family’s
account instead of the bank’s accounts.
“At different times, N37million and N41. 4
million was lodged into two accounts
owned by one Uchenna Okengwu.
“The accused also credited the sum of
N10 million into the account of one
Rosamund Okengwu and N9.5 million
paid into one Chukwuemeka Okengwu’s
account.’’
The prosecutor urged the court to remand
the accused in prison pending the
commencement of trial.
The offences contravened Sections 20, 27
(b) and 30 (1) of the Cybercrime
(Prohibition, Prevention) Act, 2015.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the
charges.
The case has been adjourned to Sept. 22
for hearing of the bail application. |

Cristiano Ronaldo tops Player Power
Rankings ahead of Steven Naismith
September 14, 2015 6:34:10 AM PDT
By ESPN staff
Each week, ESPN FC's worldwide editorial
desks nominate their top 10 performers
from the weekend action, and the results
are collated into a final Player Power
Rankings countdown.
Let us know what you think of the
countdown by commenting below or on
Twitter using #ESPNFCrankings.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
What goal drought? After two -- yes, two! --
games without a goal, questions were
asked of the Portuguese striker. Five goals
against Espanyol later, there are no further
questions. The "doubts" were all a bit
tongue in cheek, of course, but knowing
Ronaldo, he was probably a bit concerned
himself and will be pleased that normal
service has been resumed.
2. Steven Naismith (Everton)
We'll admit it, we didn't expect an Everton
substitute to figure this high in the Power
Rankings, possibly ever. But how can
Naismith be left out after a quite remarkable
performance vs. Chelsea? Two days before
his 29th birthday, the Scot scored with both
feet and his head -- a "perfect hat trick."
Many happy returns indeed!
3. Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)
PSG dropped points for the first time in
Ligue 1 this season, but through no fault of
Cavani, who scored twice to take his tally
this season to four goals in five games. With
Zlatan Ibrahimovic working his way back to
full fitness, the Uruguayan has stepped up.
Cavani leads PSG in shots with 20 -- no other
player is in double figures.
4. Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
So, who do you think had more of a
sleepless night on Friday -- Lionel Messi after
the birth of his second son, or Atletico
Madrid's defenders ahead of facing the
four-time Ballon d'Or winner? At the
Calderon, Messi was kept on the bench for
an hour before coming on to score
Barcelona's winner. Oh, baby!
5. Alexander Meier (Eintracht Frankfurt)
He won the Bundesliga top scorer award
last season so it shouldn't be a huge
surprise that Meier is in form again, but
nevertheless, whenever a 32-year-old nets a
hat trick, it is a notable achievement. That
Meier's treble came in his first game of the
season is also noteworthy, as is his recent
record vs. Cologne: seven goals in his last
three games!
6. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia
Dortmund)
Dortmund marched on with their fourth
straight win and Aubameyang was a key
reason why, netting two penalties to take
his goal tally for the young Bundesliga
season to five. At this rate, he will
comfortably eclipse last season's total of 16
and, who knows, he might just be the
catalyst for a title push by his club.
7. Anthony Martial (Manchester United)
When you're just 19 and, with a huge
transfer fee on your back, have moved to a
new country and trained less than a handful
of times with your new team, you could be
forgiven for making a quiet debut. Not so
for Martial, who announced himself to the
Old Trafford faithful with a superb goal vs.
Liverpool.
8. Fredy Guarin (Inter)
The Milan derby might not have as much
riding on it in terms of impact at the top of
the Serie A standings, but it remains one of
the biggest games in world football.
Therefore, you can imagine just how
popular Guarin is with Inter fans after his
superb goal settled Sunday's encounter at
the San Siro.
9. Luuk De Jong (PSV Eindhoven)
After scoring just eight times in 49 games
for Borussia Monchengladbach and none in
12 for Newcastle, De Jong has found his
touch since joining PSV. The striker netted
26 in all competitions last season and
already has seven in 2015-16, including the
first-half hat trick he grabbed on Saturday at
Cambuur Leeuwarden.
10. Aritz Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao)
Aduriz was a Power Rankings Player of the
Week back in August after scoring a hat
trick vs. Barcelona, and he makes this
week's countdown after a two-goal display
in a 3-1 win vs. Getafe. It's a sign of how
strong Spain have been for so long that he
has only one cap, but could his current form
lead to a national team recall?

Hitz, Romain Alessandrini, Neymar, Kelechi
Iheanacho, Jesus Manuel Corona, Robert

Nigerian troops advancing to clear all
known Boko Haram terrorists camps
towards Banki, Kumshe axis and Bama axis
have cleared 4 more camps earlier today.
They were able to clear the terrorists camp
at Bolungu 1 and 2, Bula Doye and Cheehi
Dare and secured a very important bridge
linking the towns of Miyanti and Banki in
Borno State. The gallant troops also rescued
dozen of kidnapped women and children
held captive by Boko Haram terrorists. The
clearance by ground troops and aerial

Manchester United defender, Chris
Smalling has entered the Guinness
Book of World Records as the
defender who is described as one of
the most fidgety defenders in the
world earned a goalscoring record.
Chris Smalling owns the record for
most premier league goals scored by
a substitute in one season. Chris
Smalling earned the record last
season after scoring two goals when
he came on as a substitute against
Burnley. Smalling also went on to
score more goals for Manchester
United when he came on as a sub.
Smalling entered the Guinness World
Records. Smalling also holds the
record for fastest premier league goal
by a substitute and he earned that
record against Burnley but the
Guinness Book of World Records did
not give Smalling a plaque like that

In the Nigerian music industry, it’s
common knowledge that to stay
relevant, an artiste needs to churn out
hits intermittently. As our market is a
singles driven market, people tend to
judge and forget any artiste who
hasn’t had a song on everyone’s lips
in as long as a year. So every artiste
that must stay relevant needs to have
at least on monster jam every year. Do
this and you can trust that you will be
getting your shows and
endorsements. If you don’t do this
then, I’m sorry.
Now to my hard task of listing 5
Artistes who are desperately in need
of a hit.
5. Dammy Krane
Dammy krane is an artist who for the
most part of his career he has been
almost there. Everyone recognizes
that he has talent but that’s pretty
much it. He just seems that there’s
something stopping him from being
A-list. He has so many great songs but
none of them has really hit the spot.
Amin did quite well but as I said it
didn’t hit that spot. Dammy Krane
desperately needs a hit, not just a hit
but a club hit, otherwise he can get
ready to kiss his spot goodbye
4. 9ice
Definitely the most promising act of
our time. Arguably the one of the
closest Nigerians to winning a
grammy with Gongo Aso and Street
Credibility. Unfortunately, he seems to
have gone on a downward spiral
from there. He has released about 3
or so albums since then and nothing
has seems to latch on for the super-
talented artiste. He is in desperate
need of a hit if he doesn’t want to
make the history books his home.
3. Naeto C
Naeto C is another artist that had to
make the list. Naeto C is a rapper who
if not for Glo adverts we might not
know was still an artist. I remember
when I first heard Naeto C on ‘You
Know My P’, I was like this guy is
going to change the dynamics of
Nigerian hip-hop. He had that rap
style that only southern rappers had,
the lokes of Ti and so on. So what
happened? He used to be a hit
machine. Always bringing a new
slang, a new trend and all of a
sudden, nothing. Kini Big Deal, 10
over 10, even when we were
beginning to forget him, he gave us
‘Tony Montana’. I am however
positive that he will be back after
hearing his latest album and his
feature on Leriq’s album but he needs
to hasten his steps as even the Glo
adverts will become history if not.
2. Tiwa Savage
Tiwa Savage Bills is the queen of this
list. I know many will have their
reservations on why she’s on this list
but the truth is that since she went
on maternity leave, the game has
changed. Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay
have turned into beasts. They took
the opportunity to grab the bull by
the horn. So Tiwa needs to come back
hard. Come back with a hit, not just a
hit, a massive hit otherwise, she’ll
need to join the queue she left while
she was on top.
1. D’Banj
The Kokomaster himself is number
one on this list because his case is
most serious. He is undoubtedly the
biggest artiste in Nigeria but the fact
is he is losing his relevance. That
“Wow! That’s D’Banj” is leaving us.
What happened to D’Banj who made
the monster hit Oliver Twist. No one
believes he can match Oliver Twist but
he needs to stay relevant. ‘Knocking
On My Door’ is a joke compared to his
past hits. D’banj needs a hit as soon
as possible because if he doesn’t have
one soon then he might as well give
all the money he uses for videos to
charity.
This was hard for me to write but I
just have to say the truth as I think it
is. So please feel free to share your
own views in the comment section
below. |
