sirRiddy: In the program, there are only 12 Graduate Teaching Assistantships and the deadline is January 1 for funding. So, if a better qualified candidate applies on the 2nd of January (when funding would likely have been shared), he is OYO. So, apply early.Infact, others have been asking me for my Statement of Account but I am not interested, have other things to sort out. I just discovered Kstate deadline is tomorrow 8th January (for MS electrical engineering). @SirRiddy, 1. Is it compulsory to upload the financial affidavit during application? 2. Must all the 3 recommenders upload their LORs before an application is termed complete? 3. How did you come about the 12 GTAs information? Please do justice to the above questions. Thanks |

happyday: Thanks, as per the second point. Sirriddy said smtin like Kansas city isn't much favorable for CS jobs ( I think). . . Is there a quicker way to check out the profitability of certain majors in certain cities?? As per jobs, I can't comment authoritatively on that (we are in the same boat - applicants). One can always move to cities with better job opportunities. First things First |

happyday: Happy New Year, bro! Kindly, / How can I choose schools in locations with better chances of landing jobs after grad schools? Like you were able to see with KSU? / Was it compulsory for you to take the TOEFL, cos I see that most US schools waive it for Nigerians, since English is our language of instruction? Thanks! I wanted to apply to KSU too, but I missed the priority deadline (for full consideration of funding). You could check out this link: https://crunchprep.com/gre/2014/universities-gre-scores-300-to-310Go to each school's website and checkout their priority deadline (for full funding consideration). Some schools might waive TOEFL for Nigerians, but there's no harm in writing it, 'cos it boosts one chances. NCSU waives it for Nigerians, but I saw somewhere in their site where it's required for TA. (Just my opinion) |

fizzile: Please for those that wrote GRE recently or intend registering or those that went through it, please what's the best way to register? I communicated with the man incharge of the center in the east which is at Aba and he told me it will cost 58,900naira. Please is this the same elsewhere? That's the only center close to where I stay. Please gurus in the house, kindly guide me. God bless. The best way to register is to go to www.ets.org and choose the GRE option, register an account and subsequently register for a test. You can use your very own MasterCard to register @ $195 (~N45,000) You can take the test @ Lagos or abuja. |

@glocal1, IMO, yes it is still possible to work towards fall 2016. Let's look at this scenario. You write the toefl on 14th November, and write the gre late November or mid December (You can rewrite the gre after 21days of your last exam and score reporting takes 10 - 15 days). There are many good schools with priority deadline of January 15 (to be considered fully for funding). So if you write your gre and the scores can be sent to these schools before 15th January, you are good to go.
You can do way better in your next gre. Since you already familiar with the exam structure, just concentrate on practice (Manhattan 5lb practice book). |

lobito007: Bro, I'm so keen about UH, but their insistence on TOEFL pisses me. A good score in verbal should make up for that. How sure is securing 100% funding there? What's the total tuition and the duration of their Msc in Pet eng? I don't know how funding works. Some schools say they try to fund all graduate students (Masters and PhD), some explicitly say funding is competitive for masters students. But na God sure pass. I believe packaging a solid application and submitting it before the priority deadline will increase your chances. Most Masters courses can be completed in 3 semesters (18 months) and fees varies. It can be based on semesters or per credit, check the school's site.I'm still in Naija. |

tolutweety: After so much delay..
I am finally done with this exam. Next is Admission,Funding and visa.
#I should start thinking of my SOP. ANY relevant link to assist on this?
#will share my story in a bit. Congrats so far. Based on my research, I think some schools require TOEFL for funding (especially the speaking section) as I've seen in a couples sites such as NCSU and UH. NCSU waives TOEFL for Nigerians but I found out 26 on the speaking section of TOEFL is a prerequisite to Teaching Assistance. maybe you should find out from the schools you which to apply if TOEFL is necessary. UHouston says its a must for Nigerians Start writing your SOP and tailor it to the requirements of each school according to info on their Admission requirements page. Contact your undergraduate lecturers and let them know you plan to apply around December, so they can start writing a suitable LOR. These are the steps I'm taking now. Goodluck mate |

ProfTPE: I finished my Test a while ago. My experience: GRE quant isn't really as difficult in contrast with the materials I prepared with. Most of 5lb and other materials are not truly representative of the actual test. Magoosh is cool to a large extent. I wasn't happy with my Quant score, I aimed for at least 160 but scored 154. The format I got was VQVQV. The first verbal was so tough. This really affected my composure, it turned out to be the experimental section after all. My verbal score was 156. That's an aggregate of 310. I'm applying to a number of Texan Schools....my discipline is Engineering. I don't know how 154 will affect my chances. I regret not paying attention to silly mistakes... To those hoping to write..... I'll reiterate you stick with magoosh and ETS materials alone. Magoosh mimics ETS tricks "quite" well. So if you've got the money you can subscribe to one of their plans...... or do it the way I did. You wouldn't spend more than 2500....I'm ready to share the Google Drive folders with anyone. Freely I received, freely I'll give. All you need is a data plan and a PC. For verbal I'll strongly advise you download the MAGOOSH "GRE vocabulary" app from play store, you can download the "Vocabulary Builder" app too, but don't use the latter until you've mastered the GRE vocabulary. No word was strange to me on the Test. So that's about it from here. Cheers. Applying to some mid tier schools is better. schools with lower GRE average for admissions than your score. UH, UTexas Arlington, Texas Tech... Why only Texas? |

Fortissimo: I recommend magoosh, ets material and manhattan gre something. Forgotten the name. It's a gre quant question book. Quant is not my strong point. Verbal has been my strong point since I was born.
My scores were 157Q, 167V and 4.0AWA. Don't know what happened with AWA ooo. Great Verbal! All those reading passages ... Tell us something Really nice scores! Wats your discipline? |

Wfmopraiz: What's the different between the GRE and TOEFL? GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is equivalent to Jamb for doing graduate studies. It's an entrance exam for graduate studies (masters or PHD). TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an English proficiency test. It's mostly required of non-native speakers of the English Language, when they want to study abroad. Most graduate programs require the TOEFL for admissions but you have to check if the program you are going for requires GRE (or any other entrance exam like GMAT) or not. |

Hello House, I wrote the GRE exam 2 weeks ago. Preparation: I read on and off since January. I kept on procrastinating on when to write the exam, so I wasn't serious with studies. I became serious 3 months ago. In July, I started building my vocabulary with Magoosh Android app, Gruber 3400 word list and some Hit parades I saw online. I judiciously studied for QR during this period with the Manhattan 8lbs book series (My overall Best Prep Book). I was reluctant to study the AW, even to look up the pool online. I didn't use the POWER PREP at all. Registration: I eventually registered 2 weeks to my exam date. I immediately became very serious with my studies (eat, study, eat study, eat, study, sleep!). I registered using Paypal. I studied the ETS QR and VR books of questions after registration. 2 days before the exam, I read kaplan for the essay strategies, coupled with their sample essays with scores of 6. I also watched "magoosh wednesday vocabs with Chris" and other GRE videos on youtube. Test Day: Arrived French Connection (Lagos) by past 9 am. This was due to traffic Jam (I left my abode Iyana Isolo by 6am). after all the necessary checks at the center, I started my exam. The exam was tricky (all the sections). But I noticed the 2nd sections of both QR and VR were harder. I became tensed towards the end of the exam 'cause of the tough questions and limited time remaining. I just quickly guessed (I carefully looked at the answers before each guess). After the test, I saw my scores and sent them to 4 schools. I came out, ate the pringles and malt I was offered right there at the center before going home. Summary: As the previous contributors said, scoring high in the GRE is doable, It just requires intense practice. Register about 1 month to your exam date. It will make you more serious with studies. 3 - 6 months is best for preparation (don't prepare for too long). MY score: QR160, V152, AW4 Thank You DanjaNinja, SirRiddy, and all others for your immense morale during my preparations. |

Lannister: Hi all. I'm having trouble paying for GRE I've registered with PayPal using my first bank and it's not just working out. I was hoping someone buy give a certain way to make payment today as I plan to write the exam on Friday .... URRGENT!! !!!! After registering on PayPal, add a card (visa or master card). You must verify the card - PayPal will charge a small amount to the card; when you receive a message about the debit, a code will in the message. Use the code to verify the card attached to your PayPal. After that, you can make payments easily. |
