Nigeria has declined to join an international agreement that has several other countries of the world sign up to a historic deal to ensure big companies pay a fairer share of tax. Some 136 countries of the world agreed to enforce a corporate tax rate of at least 15 per cent, as well a fairer system of taxing profits where they are earned. The decision follows concern that multinational companies are re-routing their profits through low tax jurisdictions to cut their bills. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) , an intergovernmental organisation, had led talks on a minimum rate for a decade, saying that the deal could bring in an extra $150bn (£108bn) of tax a year, bolstering economies as they recover from Covid. The move is expected to hit digital giants like Amazon and Facebook, as well as firms with global sales above 20 billion euros and profit margins above 10 per cent. A quarter of any profits they make above the 10 per cent threshold will be reallocated to the countries where they were earned and taxed there. But critics have said that a 15 epr cent rate is too low, and firms will get around the rules. Earlier in July, more than 100 countries supported the initial OECD proposals when they were made public.Countries that initially resisted, including Ireland, Hungary and Estonia, are now on board. However, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have not yet joined the agreement. In July, PREMIUM TIMES reported how ActionAid Nigeria commended the Nigerian government’s reluctance to sign onto the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, (OEDC) tax deal. The statement said it was in support of the reluctance of Nigeria to sign onto the OECD global tax reform deal as it considered the new plan unhelpful to Nigeria. “The gains may be to maximize tax collection or maximize FDI inflow. However, the current global minimum tax of 15 percent is a threat to both gains,” the organisation said. “Nigeria set up rules and regulations with the corporate tax at 30 percent for big and multinational companies. The average Corporate Tax Rate for African countries is 28 percent. However, the 15 percent minimum corporate rate is too low and therefore inadequate to stop the ‘race to the bottom. “The benefits of a proposed minimum tax will be far below what is expected to fund the budget deficit in Nigeria, which will translate to the country’s inability to meet up with the fight against poverty and unemployment. “For a moderate stand, Nigeria, like most other African countries will need the global minimum tax rate to stand between 25 percent to 30 percent above the 21 percent as initially proposed by the United States.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/489057-nigeria-rejects-deal-as-u-s-uk-134-other-countries-approve-historic-minimum-corporate-tax-rate.html |
America since long has dominated the world of start-ups along with buzzing activities in venture capital. However, now the craze of the start-up has increased and many cities of different continents including Asia, Europe and Africa have created many promising cities that are ideal for starting a start-up. Even though the Coronavirus impacted the startup scene at the global level, things are still positive for many new businesses. However, four out of every ten start-ups are in the red zone with their capitals drying up. The pandemic saw investment disruption in many continents but the situation is not as gloomy as it seems. It is because many promising start-ups were born and grew during hard times like this. For instance, during the Great Recession, 50 unicorns came into existence. Similarly, India which was hit hard by the pandemic saw many unicorns in the past two years alone. By choosing a location well, the inclination towards building better start-ups increases and here is a list of emerging cities around the world to launch a start-up in 2021. Lagos It is the main financial hub of Nigeria and the largest city by population in Africa. The youth population of the city, who are also educated, provides an excellent choice for any entrepreneur to launch a start-up here. Lagos is promising for any start-up due to its human resource which comprises 20 million people. Along with that, it has a great network of investors, innovation hubs and corporate stakeholders. When invested and planned right, a start-up can see a high return on investment. In Lagos, particularly fintech start-ups are doing extremely well. The performance of these start-ups has been so commendable that it earned the nickname Silicon Lagoon. Notable start-ups of this region include MainOne, Flutterwave, Paystack and Interswitch. London Unsurprisingly, London managed its position as the second best place for a start-up according to Annual Global Startup Ecosystem 2021 for the second consecutive year. According to the report, apart from Silicon Valley, which is the obvious choice for many entrepreneurs, London is the most attractive destination for the entrepreneur. The same has been proven with numbers as the current value of the startup ecosystem in London is approximately USD 142.7 billion. In 2012, London ranked eighth for providing an appropriate start-up ecosystem and over the years, it has been improving its performance to bear the second spot now. Bengaluru Bengaluru situated in India which is like a Silicon Valley of India is also one of the emerging cities for launching a start-up. In addition to Bengaluru, even other surrounding states of Karnataka serve as a cluster of many innovations with more than 400 global research and development centres. In fact, according to a report by Tracxn, the start-ups which are launched in Bengaluru every year are even more than in San Francisco. The Indian Government is trying to improve the financial situation of the country by investing in lotteries which when won in Lottery Sambad, Teer Result allows one to earn a handsome sum along with launching programs like Make In India to support Indian start-ups. Beijing Beijing is an ideal city for launching a start-up in the niche of education, the internet of things, hardware and transportation. Currently, the city holds an excellent record in the parameters of performance, market reach, knowledge and talent. In fact, if the Growth Index of the start-ups is taken into consideration, it tops the list. After Covid, the number of investments made in China faced a disruption but still, it is staying strong when it comes to launching a business by providing all the required facilities to the entrepreneur. Tallinn Tallinn in Estonia is one of the emerging cities for a start-up, possible because the digitization in the city is present at almost the next level. In Estonia, it is possible for one to open a bank account even without visiting a bank. Also, the tax system of the country is friendly for entrepreneurs. On top of it, it removes a huge burden from the entrepreneur by offering an affordable cost of living. Also as per the OECD index, it is doing a fairly good job in the environment, social connection and education. Also, in Tallinn one can enjoy free public transportation and public Wi-Fi making it one of the best cities to launch a start-up. https://guardian.ng/technology/five-emerging-cities-around-the-world-to-launch-a-startup/ |

Joe Igbokwe, an aide to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has fingered the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in the murder of Dr Chike Akunyili. Igbokwe claimed it is confirmed that IPOB killed Akunyili in Anambra State. In a Facebook post, the All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain described the pro-Biafra group as terrorists. “It is now confirmed that IPOB bandits have killed Dr Chike Akunyili; the husband of late Prof. Dora Akunyili in Anambra State,” he said. Chike, who is the husband of late Dora Akunyili, the ex-Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, was killed in Anambra State on Tuesday. The Department of State Services (DSS) was accused of killing the medical doctor who was returning from a lecture in honour of his late wife. However, members of IPOB were linked to his death, but the group had denied it. https://dailypost.ng/2021/10/01/ipob-bandits-killed-dr-chike-akunyili-joe-igbokwe/ |
After a four-year break, ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (WWTBAM)‘, the highly acclaimed TV game, is set to return to Nigerian screens in its usual but educative way. Before the hiatus, the show which uninterruptedly aired for 13-years (between October 8, 2004, and June 25, 2017), thrilled its audience with exciting and didactic weekly editions that were dominated by a deep wealth of knowledge. The millionaire game show, which involved so many intricacies and twists, had a grand prize of N10 million which was only won by Aroma Ufodike in 2009. But according to the organisers of this year’s edition, N20 million will be up for grabs weekly as participants strive weekly to go home with the grand prize. WWTBAM will retain its many twists, which include the lifelines: ’50/50′, where the computer eliminates two random wrong options, leaving the right option and the other remaining wrong option. ‘Phone a Friend’, where the contestant has 30 seconds to call one of their friends; and ‘Ask the Audience’, where audience members use touchpads to designate what they believe the correct option to be and the percentage of the audience choosing each specific option is displayed to the contestant. Speaking on the return of the show, Hakeem Condotti, CEO of BLK HUT media, the licensee and production house, said the desire of the organisers is to deliver creative, intelligent, and professional content that will show range and capacity. He also said the production company is proud to bring “international quality content” to the screen of Nigerians. Condotti classified the return of the show as a part of “COVID-19 relief that we all need as a nation.” “As a company, our desire is to continuously deliver creative, intelligent and professional content to the market for the people and partner brands; and in the production of a brand with WWTBAM stature, we are able to show our range and capacity to this effect,” he said. “We are proud to be bringing international quality content right to our screens again in Nigeria, be it on TV, Digital, Cable, or Mobile. As part of the much-needed Covid relief that we all need as a nation, WWTBAM is back to entertain, educate and once again, have viewers on the edge of their seats and creating millionaires every week!.” The date of the latest edition is yet to be announced. It is also yet to be seen if Frank Edoho, TV personality, will return as the host of the show. The 49-year-old filmmaker had hosted the show for 13 years before he resigned on September 2, 2017, after failing to agree on terms with Ultima studios, the producers of the show at the time. https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/n20m-up-for-grabs-weekly-as-who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire-returns-after-4-years/ |
The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday released a list of nominees for post of commissioners in the State Executive Council. This decision is coming close to a year after Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, were inaugurated for a second term into office on November 12, 2020, following their victory in the September 19 governorship election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The governor had re-appointed Osarodion Ogie as the Secretary to the State Government after his inauguration with no other appointment since then. This led to criticism from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State who accused Obaseki of presiding over the affairs of the state like a sole administrator. “There are some policies and actions of a state that legally and constitutionally should not be undertaken without the approval of the State Executive Council. As we speak, some of those actions are being taken solely by Godwin Obaseki as a sole administrator. He has not displayed the tendencies of a democratically elected governor,” Chris Azebanmwan, the Edo APC spokesman said. Nonetheless, the Governor released the list on Friday with the following nominees: 1) Barr. Osamudiamen Wole-lyamu (Oredo). 2) Mr. Chris Nehikhare (Orhionmwon). 3) Mr. Richard Edebiri (Uhunmwode). 4) Barr. Andrew Emwanta Adaze (Egor). 5) Mr. Tony Aganmwonyi (Ikpoba Okha). 6) Mr. Ethan Uzamere (Ovia South West) 7) Ms. Efosa Uyigue (Ovia North East). Barr. Donald Okogbe (Akoko Edo).9) Barr. Anthony Innih (Etsako East) 10) Mrs. Omo Otse Omorogbe (Etsako West). 11) Hon. Damian Lawani (Etsako Central). 12) Mr. Jimfred Obaidiku (Owan West). 13) Barr. J O Braimah (Owan East) 14) Hon. Felix Akhabue (Esan West). 15). Fred Emefiele (Igueben) 16) Mrs. Anehita Ojezua-Emeya (Esan Central). 17) Dr. Olu Ayewoh (Esan North East). 18) Mrs Magdalene Ohenhen (Esan South East). https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/just-in-10-months-later-obaseki-finally-names-cabinet-see-full-list/ |

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved the Conference Committee Report on a Bill seeking to upgrade the famous Auchi Polytechnic into a University of Technology. The Bill which is titled “A Bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of Federal University of Technology, Auchi, Edo State” was sponsored by Hon. Johnson Oghuma (APC, Edo). The lawmaker while briefing journalists after the plenary said the university if established will go along way in bridging the gaps of standard of education in Edo State and Nigeria as a whole. The lawmaker who expressed delight in the success achieved with the proposed legislation so far told newsmen that his passion for education, especially for the downtrodden was borne out of his difficult journey through life as a child from a very humble background. According to him, “I sponsored this Bill in the House of Representatives years ago. Many took up this Bill but could not come this far, some have died, but i am still alive today and i am so grateful to God”. “I’m someone you could say came from something less than a humble background, and that made me to almost not acquire education as I almost became a farmer in the village. But with hard work and perseverance, I was able to acquire formal education and graduate. “So for me, if this is the only thing I will achieve for my people as their representative, to God be the glory, I’m a fulfilled man and legislator”, visibly elated Hon. Oghuma said. He also submitted that when the bill finally gets assent from Mr President it will reduce the number of prospective undergraduates in the country The lawmaker explained that the bill is expected to achieve global standards “where polytechnics were being converted to universities to bridge the gap and harmonize standards of tertiary education, with the plans of developed nations like America and United Kingdom. “Most Polytechnics today have been converted to universities of technology and help to upgrade education generally,” he added. He further disclosed that the initial plan was to achieve one of the set goals of government to upgrade education standards in science, engineering and technological training in the country. Another aim, according to him, was to provide the much- needed space for post-graduate studies which no polytechnic provides. The lawmaker also expressed satisfaction that the current Auchi Polytechnic has all it takes in terms of manpower and facilities, to take off as a full-fledged university. He assured that when assented to by the President, youths from catchment areas would now have a place to go and study to meet their various lifetime aspirations previously denied them due to quota and catchment policy in the country. https://independent.ng/bill-seeking-upgrade-of-auchi-polytechnic-to-university-gets-reps-nod/ |
