Politics › Lagos #endsars Panel Suspends Sitting Indefinitely by Katcall(op): 5:14pm On Sep 18, 2021
The Lagos State Judicial Panel Of Inquiry set up to address the issue of police brutality has suspended its sitting until further notice.

The Chairperson of the panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi (retired), announced this on Saturday.

The panel was expected to conclude its sitting on October 19.

This is coming hours after a member of the panel, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), raised an alarm of plans to frustrate the team of reaching a meaningful conclusions on investigations into the October 20 Lekki Toll Gate incident.

“EndSARS Panel Being Frustrated; there are attempts to frustrate the EndSARS Judicial Panel from reaching meaningful conclusions on investigations into the Lekki Toll Gate Incident of 20th October 2020. I will give details subsequently,” he posted on Facebook.

In October 2020, many Nigerians took to the streets to demonstrate against police brutality under the #EndSARS campaign.

The demands led to the disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police Force.

On October 19, 2020, the Lagos State Government set up the judicial panel of inquiry and restitution to investigate cases of human rights abuses by operatives of the now-disbanded SARS and other security agencies.

This was sequel to the directive of the national economic council (NEC) that mandated states to set up panels to investigate police brutality in the wake of the #EndSARS protests.

The panel was given a mandate of six months to hear petitions submitted by members of the public, while a total of N200million was earmarked as compensation.

The panel’s sitting ought to have ended on April 19, but was extended by three months till July 19.

It was subsequently granted additional three months for hearing of petitions and was expected to conclude its sitting on October 19.

The Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uche Ogah, on Monday, lamented that the Central Bank of Nigeria had not been supporting the development of the mines and solid mineral sector.

The minister made the lamentation at a two-day public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Mines, Steel Development and Metallurgy.

The forum was aimed at getting inputs of stakeholders to the contents of four bills on how to achieve rapid development of the solid minerals sector.

The bills are: Nigerian Minerals Development Corporation Establishment Bill 2021, Solid Minerals Producing Areas Development Commission Establishment Bill 2021, Institute of Bitumen Management Establishment Bill 2021, and the Explosive Act 1964 Repeal and Re-enactment Bill 2021.

The panel will also investigate the loss of $9bn annually due to illegal mining and smuggling of gold.

Ogah said, “It is unfortunate that the Central Bank of Nigeria did not believe in us.

“If they believe in us, if they support us the way they are supporting agriculture, we will do wonders for this country.

“This is one ministry that is untaped, that is unknown, that can change the landscape of our revenue.”

The minister said there was need to support research for growth of the sector.

He said, “Equally, we need to ask the Ministry of Finance to speed up the export policy on solid minerals because that is the only way to have operators into the sector.”

Ogah urged citizens to be involved in checking the activities of intruders in the mining sub-sector.

Politics › Bawa’s EFCC Peddling Lies About Kogi N20 Billion Scandal: Gov. Bello by Katcall(op): 2:50pm On Sep 08, 2021
Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of lying against him over a N20 billion scandal rocking his administration.

The Lagos Division of the Federal High Court had frozen Mr Bello administration’s salary bailout account domiciled in a commercial bank over an alleged N20 billion loan obtained from it.

The court froze the account following an ex parte application brought by the EFCC, pending the conclusion of the investigation or possible prosecution.

Abass Muhammed, counsel to the EFCC, told the court that the order was necessary to preserve the ‘res’ (the fund in question) and abate further dissipation of the funds in the account.

While Fielding questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday, the governor accused the EFCC of misinterpreting facts.

”No Kogi state government’s salary account is frozen.

None whatsoever. None of our accounts is frozen or embargo placed on any of our accounts by EFCC at all,” claimed Mr Bello. ”I think it’s just a misrepresentation of facts or is a joke taken too far. My information commissioner and all those that are concerned with that lies peddled by the EFCC, I think they have responded appropriately.”

According to him, the bank “has denied that we have such an account.”

He added, “There’s no N20 billion account, or N19 billion, no fixed deposit account.

So, I don’t know where the lie is coming from.

I think in the days ahead, you will hear exactly how the matter shall be resolved.

That’s why I said that is a joke taken too far.”

He pointed out that “the officials of the EFCC” might have misled the anti-corruption agency.

”Remember that we will not just allow this to lie low because Mr President prides on fighting corruption, and EFCC is one of the agencies that is being used to fight corruption,” Mr Bello added.

It has also initiated the same process in Sokoto State.

The CCT is the disbursement of the N5,000 monthly stipend to the poor and the vulnerable households under the NSIP through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

Falilat Abdurasaq, the Head of Kogi State CCT Unit, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the payment venue on Saturday at Abocho, Dekina Local Government Area (LGA), that the essence of cash transfer was to fulfil President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

She noted that the disbursement started on Thursday, and over 7,000 beneficiaries have received N20,000 each across Dekina LGA.

She explained that the N20,000 was meant for four months’ stipends of N5,000 monthly for January, February, March and April 2021.

According to Ms Abdulrasaq, all the 21 LGAs in the state have been benefiting and will benefit from the current payments.

She stressed that the CCT was targeted at the poorest of the poor in other to bring them out of poverty, adding that it had impacted the lives of the beneficiaries through the training they received on group formation.

”Our beneficiaries have developed the culture of saving money and are into different forms of contributory savings like “Ajo, issue”, among others.

”They have also acquired skills and assets individually and in groups across the State. Their consumption level has improved over time,” she said.

She, however, advised the beneficiaries to always use the money for its intended purpose, and continue to attend training, coaching and mentoring sessions to improve their lives, saying ”because with Cash Transfer, ‘Beta Don Come’. ”

Ms Abdulrasaq commended Governor Yahaya Bello, for his great support and commitment to the welfare of the people of Kogi State, particularly the poor and
vulnerable.

Some beneficiaries who spoke with NAN expressed joy over the payment and thanked President Buhari and Governor Bello for the kind gesture towards the poor and vulnerable at the grassroots.

Yusuf, Agagwu, and Hauwa Musa, who are all widows from Elika, Ogbabede and Olowa communities respectively, eulogised the federal government for bringing succour to them and improving their wellbeing.

”The money has transformed my life and my three children because I am a widow, and I have been able to start a small business,” Ms Musa said.

Sokoto
Also, the Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of a monthly stipend of N5,000 under the CCT in Sokoto State.

The National Project Accountant, Jafar Ibrahim-Yabo, who represented the humanitarian minister, flagged off the disbursement in the Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto state.

Mr Ibrahim-Yabo said 3,165 beneficiaries from six local government areas would obtain the payment in the present circle of disbursement.

He added that in the next circle, no fewer than 75,000 beneficiaries will be targeted.

Mr Ibrahim-Yabo reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing peoples’ lives through valuable programmes and urged beneficiaries to be patient if there are delays in the disbursements.

According to him, the present scheme is Household Uplifting Programme (HUP), introduced by the federal government in 2016, to fortify the social safety net.

He explained that the programme is aimed at helping the poor exit poverty, prevent the poor and the vulnerable from sinking further into poverty and build resilience to withstand shock and risks.

The accountant added that the gesture would surely continue to improve household consumption and enhance the economy of the affected communities, among other benefits.

The Special Adviser to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto on Social investment, Hayatu Tafida, urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds.

Also, the Head of Sokoto State Cash Transfer Unit, Abubakar Bianchi, highlighted the successes recorded so far and urged the beneficiaries to maintain the culture of saving.
