Asides the fact that this story is purely fiction, whenever there is a smell in a place, the odour is usually strongest at the source. So all they needed to do was trace the source where the smell was strongest. Dogs could have done the trick. The woman didn't have any money of her own yet she was able to buy a house worth thousands.

The Devil's Offer
***************

I opened my eyes slowly but only my left eye obeyed. The other was swollen and almost blind, a result of the battering from thugs who took me from my home. I tasted dried blood on my lips. My right hand was cuffed to a metal pipe that ran from the ceiling into the ground. I surveyed my surrounding trying to find a way out of the hell hole that I found myself when my eye fell on a lady. She was light skinned, heavy breasted, plump and beautiful.

“Good morning honey,” she said and continued “I hope you rested a bit?” She leaned forward from the wooden stool she sat on, within touching distance of my face.

I closed my eye and opened it again just to be sure I was not dreaming but there she was smiling at me. Maybe she had been sent to let me go.

“Where am I?” I asked, being in no mood for chit chat.

“We call this place ‘the abattoir’. It’s our special rendezvous for humans who like to be…stubborn” She said. “I understand the pain you are going through and the loyalty to your organization. Your best chance of getting out of here alive is giving me what I want.” She finished with a smile.

“And what is that?” I queried

“Access to the security detail of the governor-elect”

“Who are you again?” I asked

“People call me the Devil. I liked it and decided to go with it. You can call me Lady D”

“I think you have me mistaken for someone else. I do not work with the office of the state, let alone know anything about the governor elect or his security. I am an employee at The Mall. Please just let me go.” I begged.

“As convincing as you sound, the thing is I know everything about you Agent Frank, codename Trigger. Let’s cut the games and face facts. You can remain obstinate and die here. I’ll find someone else to give me what I want or you can cooperate and I’ll give you whatever you want.
That is my offer. It’s only open for sixty seconds.”

I gave the Devil a cold, hard stare. Forty seconds later I began to gasp for air. My eyes rolled in and I fell backward with a thud. Lady D sprang from her seat and came to me. When she was close enough, I kicked her legs from under her making her fall to the ground. Before she regained composure, I put my arm across her neck and applied pressure on her carotid artery till she was unconscious. Without wasting time, I took out her earring, using the sharp metal to unlock the cuffs. I searched her and saw a car key, a phone and some cash. I took them and went to the door. I opened it slowly to see if there would be any trouble. It was still dawn and the cover of darkness helped me move.

I pressed a button on the car key and the lights to a Benz C300 flashed. I rushed into it, brought the car to life and zoomed off.

Ten minutes later, Lady D came to. She got off the floor slowly, dusted herself and let out a knowing wry smile. She placed a finger on the second button of her shirt and bent her head to speak.

“He took the bait. Activate the tracker.”

Deal Gone Bad
*************

“Uche, believe me. It is definitely going to work. I have considered all the options and possible scenarios. Nothing will go wrong. We just need to stick to the script and make sure that we stay in character.” Kunle said to me. He had been trying to convince me for the past half hour about a business idea that he was sure would make us rich.

I vehemently refused. I did not have the balls to go through with it. The more thought I gave to it, the more certain I was that the business was dead on arrival. However, Kunle was undeterred. He never gave up on his ideas even though none had yielded fruit so far.

“Kunle, look. I am not saying that this idea will not work. I am telling you this goes against every fiber of my being. When something does not sit right with me, I don’t go through with it. You should know this much about me by now.” I said and continued, “Besides, why do you need me? Must it be me? Anyone can fit into this role perfectly.”

“Uche! I can’t believe you are saying this right now. Asides the obvious fact that you are my best friend, there is no one better skilled and intelligent to pull this off. We do this and we are sorted for life. Come on!”

Twenty minutes later, I agreed to the plan. All we had to do was wait.

At 9pm Kunle’s phone began to ring. It rang three times and then stopped. At 9:30pm it rang again, this time for longer. Kunle gave me a knowing smile.

“I told you Uche. This will work.” Kunle said.

At 11:15pm, the phone rang for the sixteenth time. It was time for me to get in character. I took the phone, cleared my throat and swiped to answer.

“Hello Kunle? Hello? Kunle?” A female voice said frantically.

I deepened my voice, making it as harsh as possible.

“Who be this? Who are you woman?”

“Please I want to talk to Kunle, the owner of the phone. He is my son.”

“You must be crazy. Which son? Don’t call again, else we go waste am before tomorrow”

Kunle’s mother was still talking when I ended the call. Kunle was excited and overjoyed. He praised me for handling the situation like a pro and grabbed a bottle of wine from the fridge. He poured two glasses and we drank. Just like Kunle had anticipated, his phone started ringing. We ignored it for five minutes and then he signaled me to pick it up. I did and put it on speaker.

“Please sir, don’t harm him. We will do anything to get him back. Please just name your price.”

I was about to respond when Kunle’s brother opened the door, tipsy and loud.

“Kunlestica, my one and only bro!!!” We tried to signal to him to keep quiet but he was too high to notice. Kunle had some wine in his mouth which he spat out furiously.

“Oluwagbemiga?” Kunle’s mum said.

Gbenga ignored our sign language and kept on talking loudly. All attempts to get him to keep quiet were futile.

“Omo, Uche if you see this babe wey just blow me for Cubana…”

I hurriedly ended the call. The damage was done. The horror on Kunle’s face could melt stone.

If looks could kill.

Man Behind The Mask
********************

The time was 7pm. Jessica let out a stifled yawn. She got up, cracked her knuckles and arched her back. The work was not done yet but she had to leave. Jessica had been invited to a black tie event as special guest. Spending more time in the office meant she would not make it to the event early enough.

Clearing her desk, she stuffed her MacBook and a few files into a knapsack and grabbed the car keys. Nodding and smiling at colleagues on her way, she made it to the car park and got into the car. She pressed a button and the engine burst into life, humming silently like a lullaby.

She put the car in gear and was about to accelerate when she felt something cold and metallic on her neck. Her heart almost jumped out of her chest but she managed to control her response. There were a few seconds of awkward silence between her and the stranger, neither wanting to speak first. Jessica stole a glance at the rear view mirror to catch a glimpse of her assailant. He wore a disguise on his face, some sort of mask that covered just his eyes. It was dark so she could not see much.

“Move!” the masked man barked, simultaneously turning off the safety of the gun that was now firmly pressed against Jessica’s jugular.
Jessica began to play several scenarios in her head as to how the situation would end. In all of them, she did not see herself getting out unscathed. Taking a deep breath she hoped she could dialogue.

“I will do whatever you want” Jessica began in a slow but steady and assured voice, “please don’t shoot.”

The masked man ignored her. Three minutes into the drive he spoke.

“Take the next left and drive into WasteLand. Move fast.”

“Whatever it is you were paid, I’ll double it. Please. Don’t do this.” Jessica begged. She was beginning to panic. WasteLand was twenty acres of virgin land, marked off to be used as a refuse dump. No one would ever find her decomposing body. She thought about driving the car into a curb, taking a chance of some sort but it was too dangerous.

Jessica turned into Wasteland and slowed down.

“Speed up woman! Drive to the edge of the cliff!” the assailant said, pressing the gun deeper. Jessica obeyed.

They got to the edge and Jessica stopped the car.
“If you want to live, do exactly as I say. Got it?” the man said, his words slow, deliberate and precise.
Jessica nodded.

“Now, open the door slowly and raise your hands. If you try anything stupid, you are dead.”

Jessica obeyed. She got out of the car and held her hands up, her back to the masked killer.
Less than a minute later, he instructed with a different voice.

“Turn around.”

The voice was familiar. She turned and could not believe her eyes. Mask off, the man in front of her was on one knee, the gun replaced by a diamond ring.

“Kevin?” Jessica spoke, shocked beyond words

“You have always wanted a crazy proposal. Please baby, will you marry me?”

Just then the headlamps of different cars came on. The cars were parked in a semi-circle surrounding the couple.

“How do I live without you” played from one of the car stereos. It was her favourite.

Jessica ran to him and kissed him deeply, ignoring the ring.

“Yes, with all my heart!”

Last Night
*********

Amazing things have happened to me in the past but last night’s events cap them all. I was jolted awake from sleep by a loud bang. Startled, I switched on the lights and listened. There was nothing. It was two in the morning and I had hoped it was not a visit from the men of the night. Five minutes passed, yet there was still no sound. My mind could not have been playing tricks on me. I shrugged, covered myself with the duvet and hugged a pillow. I had barely closed my eyes when I heard the sound again. My heart threatened to burst out of its enclosure as it beat faster than usual. I was really scared and could not stay in bed. Armed with a machete and torch, I descended the stairs in a bid to trace the sound.

“Today na today” I told myself.

It was more of spineless curiosity than bravado. I turned off the living room lights and made for the window, ‘commando’ style. As I carefully moved the curtain sideways to take a peep through the window, I heard the sound again, this time even louder than before. I ducked immediately, putting off the torch. I gave up my heroic adventure that instant, dropped the machete and prepared to dash up the stairs. Just then, the knob turned and the door opened inwards, with light from the compound trickling in. I had forgotten to lock the door!

There was a kick to the door, opening it wider. I felt warm liquid on my thighs. I closed my eyes and wished the earth to swallow me. Pressing myself against the wall, I braced myself for the worst.

Three men came in, switched on the light and screamed,

“Happy Birthday!”
