Seun:
Fellow Nairalanders,

We have observed an ongoing password guessing attack against Nairaland members. The perpetrators have obtained a list of thousands of usernames and passwords from hacked websites & are systematically trying those passwords on Nairaland to take over your accounts.

If you have used your Nairaland username and password on other websites, they may be able to log in to Nairaland as you, mutilate your profile and send spam messages with your name. To prevent this, please change your Nairaland password to a unique password asap.

For the dozens of Nairalanders whose accounts have been affected, you would have gotten an unexpected login notification from Nairaland. All you need to do to secure your account is to logout, reset your password with this form, and correct your mutilated profile.

For those who are affected, we may scramble your password and log you out to force you to change it. Don't be alarmed. Just logout and reset your password with this form to regain access to Nairaland.

We have taken measures to slow the perpetrators down severely, but it's up to you to make sure that your password is secure.

Best Regards,
Seun Osewa.

This is termed “Password spraying “ and resetting passwords will only slow down the perpetrators but not stop it.
Seun, you need to implement security controls and modern-day password encryption through “Salting” and strong cryptographic “Hashing Algorithm”
They have the usernames already, all they need is just cheap or even free tools on the internet before they begin to match passwords to the usernames.

Health / Giant African Land Snail Invades Florida County by kaykith05(m): 2:03pm On Jul 03, 2022
A Florida county is under quarantine due to the discovery of a fast-growing population of invasive giant African land snails.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) confirmed there were giant African land snails in the New Port Richey area of Pasco County on June 23, according to FDACS' website.

The snails pose a health risk to humans because they carry a parasite called rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis, Christina Chitty, a public information director at FDACS, told CNN.
According to Chitty, the population in Pasco County likely originated from the illegal pet trade. Giant African land snails are illegal to own as pets in the United States. But some exotic pet owners still keep the invasive pests. If the owners discard them into the wild or accidentally lose them, they can quickly establish a foothold, feeding on over 500 different plant species and even consuming the paint and stucco off houses as a source of calcium.

Chitty said the department is currently investigating the population and determining how many snails are in Pasco County. The snails are native to east Africa and can grow up to 8 inches long.

The quarantine took effect June 25 and prevents residents from moving the snail or related items, like plants and soil, in or out of the designated quarantine area. Residents who think they have spotted a giant African land snail are advised to call the FDACS hotline and avoid touching the snail without gloves on due to the meningitis risk.

According to Chitty, FDACS plans to spend three years eradicating the population in Pasco County, using the pesticide metaldehyde to treat the soil.

"The goal is to eradicate" the snails, said Chitty. "It is a comprehensive and extensive process."

This is not the first time Florida has dealt with an invasion of giant snails. In 2011, a population of the pests was discovered in Miami-Dade County. It wasn't until 2021 the population was fully eradicated.

While the snails in Miami-Dade County had grey-colored flesh, the snails in Pasco County have white flesh, said Chitty.

Foreign Affairs / Gun-control Overhaul Demanded In Rallies Across The U.S. by kaykith05(m): 6:18am On Jun 12, 2022
March For Our Lives holds national day of action following mass shootings and congressional hearings on gun violence.
Thousands of people filled the National Mall in Washington on Saturday as thousands more marched in cities across the country to demand that Congress act on proposed gun-control measures.
The demonstrations come after mass shootings in Buffalo, N.Y. and Uvalde, Texas, that have reinvigorated the national conversation around gun control and led to congressional hearings about possible legislative reform. Mass-shooting survivors and other victims of gun violence lobbied legislators and testified on Capitol Hill last week.
Saturday’s events, organized by March For Our Lives, a gun-control advocacy group, included gun-violence survivors, family members of victims and students and teachers. The rallies followed a week of meetings between the group’s representatives and members of Congress.
Several thousand demonstrators in Washington braved a light rain and gray skies to cheer speakers while waving signs with slogans such as “Ban Guns, Not Books,” and “Fear Has No Place in Our Schools.”

Politics / U.S, Canada, EU Allies Move To Block 'selected' Russian Banks From SWIFT by kaykith05(m): 12:22am On Feb 27, 2022
The United States, Canada, and other European allies released a joint statement on fresh additional sanctions being placed on Russia, which states that "selected" Russian banks are removed from the SWIFT financial system.

"We commit to ensuring that selected Russian banks are removed from the SWIFT messaging system. This will ensure that these banks are disconnected from the international financial system and harm their ability to operate globally," reads the joint statement from leaders of the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, which was released on Saturday.

What does this mean for Russia, its economy and its citizens?

Awesome! Thank you so much for the response Sir. If I may ask pls, like which areas in the United States do we have alot of Nigerians there? So one does not get homesick so long so can still see your fellow country men there. I'll love to plan towards such a place

For one, Indianapolis is filled with lots of Nigerians and lots of African stores. No dull moment once you mix with them.

It's not that difficult if you're open-minded. The first thing you want to do is get a Social Security Number... you can't do very much without it. While doing that, start searching for a job. Your job is usually one of the places to meet people and make friends... the church is also a good place too. Best advice, don't attend a Nigerian church, branch out, meet other Americans. If you're in a fairly big city, look for rec leagues, there's probably one around you for soccer. You might even meet some Nigerians there! Or try meetup.com. They have a ton of groups/activities there that you can join. Try to get a job that comes with benefits; medical insurance is #1. You don't want to have to use the hospital or urgent care with no insurance. Fastest way to get yourself into a debt hole in the US. If your job does not offer health insurance, go online and find an ObamaCare plan. You may end up finding one very cheap that covers the basics you need.

If you land yourself a good job, you should be able to get your own apartment within 6 months. Rule of thumb:

1. Have your host help you with a bank account where you can get your paycheck by direct deposit (always better as businesses charge you a small amount to cash your check for you).
2. Get a credit card (your bank is always a good place to start). The credit limit is likely to be small ($500-$1500) but that doesn't matter. What you really need it for is to build credit.
3. Put most of your purchases on the card, but PAY IT OFF every month BEFORE the due date - if not you get charged a late fee. Get creditkarma.com. Easy and free website to monitor your credit history. It's cool watching your credit score grow and it helps you figure out what you need to do to make it grow or not.
4. When you need to get an apartment, make sure rent is no more than 30% of your paycheck. As a newbie, try to get an apartment that comes with all utilities included in the rent (at least for the first 1-2 years). Easier for you and you never have to worry about missing a gas or electric bill. After that, if you do move to another apartment, get one that does not include utilities so you have some experience dealing with home bills - phone, gas, electric, water/PUD, etc.
5. Get a phone plan - start small, you don't need all they try to sell you. One day, you'll be stable enough to afford more.
6. If you're in a big city with good public transport, use it. Take about a year before getting a car. My brother lives in NYC and sold his car. It cost more to park it than was worth. The subway there can get you anywhere within the city. For everything else, you've got uber.
7. Cook your own food lol... super easy to spend a lot of money eating out.
8. Be nice to people, say hello, smile. Enjoy America.

...and oh, even if you don't get a driver's license early enough, get a state ID, it works the same as a driver's license except you can't drive with it.

Absolutely correct.

You hustled in Nigeria and succeeded. You are on an exponential trajectory in Nigeria as it is, whatever you do, do no relocate to the U.S.

You will be miserable there. You may end up working at Mcdonald serving food or end up as a security guard or at the very best a taxi driver. Your U.S based wife may talk down on you because she feels like she brought you to the U.S and also because she will likely be the bread winner of the house. Nigerians in the U.S especially in Houston, have the highest divorce rate and domestic homicide rate than anyone else. And that's because a a majority of the U.S based Nigerian women are nurses making good money while their husbands are minimum wage earners doing menial jobs. They feel like they can talk to their husbands anyhow and one day the husband reacts and kills the woman.

IF you are into IT, you can work remotely right here in Nigeria. I know a couple friends working for Amazon Web Services from Nigeria, they get paid in dollars and they earn nothing less than $300,000 annually by working for different companies. I wish you all the best, but don't say you weren't warned.

Might be true, but our case will be different. And thank God I’m into IT

Life in naija turned out “not to be a bed of roses”, especially when I left tertiary school. I was ambitious and had dreams and plans, and I thank God I’m not the lazy type (according to one of our presdo), so I had to hustle to sustain and also save up for better plans.

Before I gained admission, I had this phone skill; like I know the in and out of most phone, from the days of 3310 to the Java phone era to Symbian OS glory days to practically any phone type, so it was pretty easy for me to troubleshoot, diagnose and solve software related problems of every kind and a lil bit of hardware knowledge.

While in school, through a friend, I motivated myself, bought myself my 1st laptop (compaq presario) and my friends saw me as a big boy but that wasn’t the case. I was hustling for over a month, while school had resumed to save and buy it but nobody knew. I’m also thankful to God for my academic prowess, I’m not the best, but I do catch up quickly, so staying away for a month didn’t mean too much. I got enrolled in a computer training on campus, that was my intro to IT (my dream).

Live was easy and sweet on campus, even though there are days that I drank garri and trekked to lecture, it was overall a lovely experience.

Fast forward to after graduation, I couldn’t get a good paying job except teaching, which I did for a couple of months and it even made my financial life miserable. So I fell back to my God-given strength went back to a labor-intensive job which I hustled while in school. The pay was good as I could save up to a 100k in a month during peak seasons; that’s aside my daily spendings and weekend balling.

It was now time to have a plan for my life (phone accessories and digital entertainment business). Hustled hard for about 4 months, raised a substantial amount (no amount is ever enough for that biznez), just to start up something.

First few months was kinda dull, business wise but I had strong faith and hope, and that is the “KEY”. After one year, there was visible growth in the business; 2nd year, I expanded my shop. 3rd year saw strategic improvements; 4th year, I added phone sales to the business.

2 years later, added Laptop sales to it. Also I bought my 1st car after 3 years in business, sold It and bought another (Toyota fisheye) after 2 years. Then I bought (Camry muscle) before disposing the fisheye.

And lest I forget, I got married to a darling based in the US. A lot of things happened in between these times which time will not permit me to share but we never gave up. Like 2baba said “if dem tell you say e easy, na set-up”, man’s got to always forge ahead.

Watch out for part 2 which is (My Exodus) another day, I rest for now.

Here’s the continuation of my epistle.

Here’s the part 1, incase you missed it

https://www.nairaland.com/6981296/travails-exodus-life-u.s

So after my marriage, my wife filed for me to join her in the U.S, that was in 2017. I was excited, even as I started dreaming of the snow and the sane environment. It was kind of a long, frustrating. heart-breaking process. Abeg, people wey their relatives in U.S dey file for, dey try, really. Especially for those who are not yet US citizens, that is , the permanent resident ones. Some have to wait 4yrs, up to 12 years depending on the visa category. All thanks to the process, I’m now an expert in immigration matters, advising people what to do and what not. Trump made matters worse when he added Nigeria to list of countries banned to obtain certain visa types and this impacted me. It really a heart-wrenching and emotional draining process. So while most people were praying for trump’s re-election, though I like him, I wished his opponent wins. Whilst still on the matter, I got interview appointment date from the embassy until Covid-19 came and shattered my rising hope. Just a few days to my interview, Buhari announced lockdown and as such, the embassy canceled all activities and was also on lockdown. Nna, my dada scatter. Gradually, I began to lose interest in the process until Biden came on board. He did upturn some of trump’s immigration policies, by this time, the lockdown has been lifted. So I rescheduled and went for the interview. What I concluded was a successful interview, suddenly took a left turn. I just called my wife and told her to forget about me coming , that she should try and visit regularly ( even if it means for me to be paying for the tickets) . That was my conclusion. I decided to flex a lil bit, I can’t come and kill myself because of one visa. I changed my car and focused more on my business. As God will have it, just a little above one month of my interview, the embassy requested I re-do medicals and submit alongside my passport (they returned my passport after the interview). About a week later, my visa was out!!!! I screamed, laughed like I was high on something.
Sharp sharp, I suspended everything else and codedly planned my movement. Covid-19 negative test results, yellow fever card and the rest were with me cuz I no wan hear demsay demsay at the airport. I checked in and in about an hour, I’m already flying. It was a mixed feeling cuz I don’t know what awaits me in the new land compared to my small enjoyment life in Naija. As I landed at the POE, Omo see levels. Airport make sense die. The best part was reuniting with my family.
At first, the area was so so boring to me, no place to go, no friends to roll with and worst of all no single person on the whole street. They say jobs are everywhere, true, but mostly warehouse jobs, home care jobs and other menial jobs. For starters, I worked in a warehouse but I quit after 2months cuz I have to stand, and walk throughout a shift of ten hours. My brother, I can’t. I brushed up my IT skills and wrote a certification exam with which I got an IT job and I’m still studying more courses till now. I pray for God’s grace and help, Amen.
I hope this story motivates someone. There’s always hope so never give up!!!!
